Neil Young's "MY LETTER TO YOU" | NYA
After a lengthy silence over past month or so, we have today Neil Young's MY LETTER TO YOU | Neil Young Archives.
Two weeks of letters coming your way today. I’ve been busy choosing the content and finishing the running orders for Volume 3 of the archive and also handed in Canary, my first sci-fi book, after working with my editor Ed, No kidding. That’s his name.
(My dad was a writer and wrote several books I am trying to get hold of to present here at NYA.) All this was handed in on the same day after quite a lot of concentrated work over the last 4 years. So now, there’s a slight void.
I have 5 songs ready for the next album, so I think over time the rest will come and we may start recording again soon.
So here are the replies to your last couple weeks of letters!
Everyday is a gift.
Love and be well,
neil
So. Neil Young has turned in a book manuscript and written 5 songs. That's in addition to the massive ongoing curation at NYA. (See Neil Young Release Schedule For 2021 & 2022: TENTATIVE* DATES**)
Neil Young earlier this year wrote of how the events of 2020 have had a positive aspect: "The focus was the gift".
The focus was the gift, which has brought us an "avalanche of an embarrassment of riches" -- or as we characterized previously -- Expecting to Calculate Neil Young 2021: Numbers Add Up To Nothin' ... or "A Rusties Holy Grail".

Just finished reading the new batch of letters, and Neil mentions that he will be recording with Crazy Horse soon. Wondering if it will include Poncho or Nils. Exciting news either way.
Peace🙏
Dan,
On the patron call Neil said he had contacted Nils and hoped to record at the end of June (I seem to recall the 20th being mentioned). The recent Poncho interviews suggest he's only up for a farewell world tour these days.
Also letters saying that Pete Long, author of Ghosts of the Road, has passed away. Hard to get a copy these days.
Neil writing an SF book? Now that's my other great love and I will have a look at that, though I hope it's not a standard post-apocalypse story as thare's way too many of those around in books, films and games to find something new to say.
On and there was a short rambling letter from one "Catman" - now I recall a similarly named dude on the Rust List many years back who posted long rambling thoughts on Neil, including a weird SF-style post about him playing some future concert of all his material in one go - something that has stuck in my memory. Wonder if it's the same person?
Hambone
I've seen on NYA that the serie of 6 bootlegs is postponed in october and november (check dates on the timeline).
Phil
@ Dan - right, something like 2 weeks of letters,
one can only imagine what themes neil might be writing on ...
@ Hambone - you're referring to patron call a month or 2 back, right?
very sad news on Pete Long. we'll try and pay tribute here to the indispensable Ghosts of the Road.
regarding Neil writing a SF book, do you recall neil meeting author Clive Cussler a few years ago? we seem to recall somehow the book genesis was around that time and neil saying he wa getting some writing tips.
on "Catman", we'd say the same character. and we do mean character.
@ Phil - thanks on bootleg update. we added update @ http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2021/06/new-concert-posted-neil-young-fox.html
shortages, delays, backups, disruptions all across the global supply chain. hmmm. maybe something's going on? nah
@ Hambone. : I also remember Neil mentioning Nils during the Patron zoom call, but he also said that he thought Micah Nelson would be great addition to Crazy Horse, which I think would be awesome personally. Although Poncho dreams of a farewell tour with Neil, that wouldn’t necessarily keep him from recording with the band in the studio, so one never really knows what to expect from the Neil universe. All this is clearly just conjecture on my part, and logic dictates that Nils will be the one recording.
I’m also a fan of science fiction and Neil mentioned that he was writing a science fiction story several years ago, so hopefully it deals with something other than the end of the world. I think we’ve all had enough of that for awhile. With Neil’s imagination I’m convinced it will be an interesting ride.
Peace 🙏
I think the last thing Crazy Horse needs is Micah Nelson. Nils - yes OK, but Poncho is way out in front. But age catches up with all of us someday.
Oh crap I'm jumping in. I never enjoyed who plays better with Neil than another, everyone adds something different and isn't that the point! It keeps the catalog changing, new, exciting and if Neil's having fun...... I remember Neil claiming when Ben passed a big percentage of his songs couldn't be performed live anymore. POTR played a lot what those songs I believe he referred to. Micah specifically filled that spot but clearly not in the same way, but made them possible to be played live. Let's not discount talents is all I mean
Micah does have a bit of spook to him too
I love what Micah brings to the party! Loved it when he broke some guitar string in a concert and got the Stringman down to play - the only time I’ve seen it come down for any other song than Hurricane. Paul E
POTR's potential has never really been truly tapped for a Neil Young album?(discuss!) Their 'solo' albums are really sublime. Structured, beautifully written and polished. Their 2017 eponymous album puts Neil's Already Great effort to shame. If Neil had taken their eponymous content he'd have had a smash hit...but uncle Neil doesn't seem to like letting his side men in on his act....oops rant over. Well maybe not...why's Neil not hosting Crazy Horse material on his archives? The recent Uncut interview with Poncho really cuts through the Neil the Messiah worship... here's where another simple thread on Neil's side bands naming conventions thread that goes south quickly!!
Hey, I love Neil, but I wish he'd rehearse and refine his material. The first take is the raw essence of a song with ....oh I will shut up!!!
Neil Young "AND" or "WITH" Crazy Horse
https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/neil-young-and-or-with-crazy-horse.1065827/
Obviously Neil can do whatever he wants and I am sure the book will be of some interest, but I'm skeptical. Good science fiction is damn hard to write. A lot of trash out there that passes as "imaginative" when it is really undisciplined and self-focused. Lately I have been noticing just how many people have "self-published" books, no peer review or blind review.
