BEST STORY EVER: Ed Robertson (BNL) Hangs With Neil Young
Somebody once said Neil Young's Broken Arrow ranch in Northern California is "The Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory of Rock and Roll". (Thanks Steve in Ottawa!)
Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies is a huge Neil Young fan. (See Barenaked Ladies CD Barenaked For The Holidays, with parody of the holiday classic "Deck The Stills") So when he got the chance to play Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit (about ~2012?), he was happy to do it.
One thing he didn't necessarily expect: getting to hang out with Neil himself, and Crazy Horse to boot. But it happened... And Neil was a great host.
BTW, here is The #1. Definitive. Best. Neil. Story. Ever.

I only made it as close as the driveway to Broken Arrow, and got that honor thanks to my broken radiator overheating. I was driving a friend down skyline who was visiting and saw my heat gauge in the danger zone on my rebuilt engine. I was the mechanic who failed to fix the car. Anyway, I said to my friend, “Want to check out Neil Young’s driveway?” He said yes, I pulled over. I went to take a pee in the woods and discovered a cave with evidence of fire soot on the ceiling of this small cave. I thought that was really cool since Neil uses a lot of imagery of the Native peoples. He has a lot of love and dedication to them, which makes me like him even more. Before long we were back on our way. This was a very interesting experience. Alan in Seattle
Cool video. I love the term “Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory of Rock and Roll.” Combo of tree fort and Wizard’s castle! Ha!
More about the cave: In my amateur archaeologist eyes, the smoke remnants on the ceiling of the sandstone cave appeared very old. It made me think of the possibility that this cave was perhaps used by Natives long ago. My theory could be wrong. It could be that some modern day person used it to get shelter and escape the elements. There is a landform within 5 Miles of this location which is a California state park. Carbonic acid from rain has eroded this large landform in very interesting ways. It looks like God dropped acid to create this thing. It is sort of like a melting cathedral in appearance, or an intricate sand castle created by an acid head with OCD.
Interesting expedition there Alan.
So a cave @ Broken Arrow ranch. well.
Now that's very interesting. Maybe a deep subject -- as they say?!
Tell us more, tell us more.
BNL were a really entertaining live band in the 90's...no clue what happened to them & I certainly never listen to their music now...but I remember that they were just awesome live
@ Jonathan - kind of same here. Been to a few of their shows back in the day and they were a real fun band and crowd.
