SOLD: Neil Young Archives Vol#2 @ USD$2,970.66 | eBay
A copy of the as yet to be released Neil Young Archives Volume #2 has been sold on eBay for a high bid of USD$2,970.66 -- over 10 times the retail value.
Last month, all 3,000 units of the long awaited Neil Young Archives Volume II Limited Edition Boxset (@ $249 USD each) sold out in less than 48 hours -- somehow inexplicably and unpredictably -- demonstrating a huge pentup demand for physical Neil Young product by a global hardcore fan base. (See SOLD OUT: Neil Young Archives Volume II Blows Out in 48 Hours.)
As noted earlier in an apology to fans, the fallout continues over the most recent "trick of disaster" regarding the launch of the long awaited Neil Young Archives Volume II Limited Edition Boxset.
Neil Young continues to apologize and insists that he will make things right for fans on LTE | NYA:
"My deepest apologies to all who have been adversely impacted by this. We are going to make it right."

As the great Paul Samuelson once said "If you're so rich, how come you're so dumb?"
There are 2 others on ebay at the moment, one at £744, the other at £960. I have no doubt that these will go for a huge amount too.
I believe that selling the box at such a high price is unacceptable speculation, a slap in the face of misery and an offense to culture. I am speechless.
Wow, 3000 bucks. That takes scalping to a whole new level. Who would pay that much? I'm expecting a clamshell CD box to arrive in 2021 and supposedly, the book will be for sale separately too. So, all they are paying for is a poster and a big box with a number in it.
Out at the big box store people lined up for more... to cough up the bucks.
If the clamshell/book combo is much cheaper, I might even consider selling the box at original retail price. Al I wanted was a physical version of the Archives Vol. II anyway.
I am really puzzled with the issue of the Archives Vol 2.
I am a Neil Young's fan since 1970, I have acquired most of its work and I also own some rarities, aka bootlegs.
I am grateful to Neil for opening the Neil Young Archives to all his fans, and to provide the subscribers with easy access to his artwork. This is invaluable, and it is worth by far the 20 bucks I've paid. This is truly a gift.
Yet, with all the respect that I have for Neil, I can hardly believe that he was unaware. Neil is far of being naive, and he knows quite well the music industry and business (see the Geffen period and related songs, the Pono period, etc.), so I cannot buy that this is Reprise's fault only. I think that their teams do know the market and they can quite well predict the demand: as such, announcing 3000 copies was really a joke, knowing Neil's artistic career and NYA followers. As sung in everybody's rockin
Well, here's three thousand, that ought to get it on.
Well, thanks a lot man! I love your new song.
Additionally, the 3000 copies limit was publicized in NYA site from the start so everyone could anticipate in advance the issue (some would call it disaster or failure).
I simply acknowledge that Neil apologized for the mess up.
Therefore I would not insist on who's fault and would not even blame Reprise to deny a kind of "similar" though "new" edition, since it would be unfair to the buyers of the limited edition. This is a consistent decision.
Regarding prices on eBay, I am not that surprised since everybody knows that shortage leads to speculation :-).
I'm living in Paris and all my efforts to buy Vol 2 either in the US or UK stores had been unsuccessful. Fortunately, thanks to a thrasher's info in a twitter thread, I have checked the Canadian store and got one before it was gone, but I would have to pay delivery and custom tax. As I rushed out to buy it, I did not even think of providing the discount code for subscribers (in addition, I had difficulty where to find it). I simply wish that the archives will be duly delivered...
Of course, I do NOT intend to re-sell it though, as many commented, the archives are comprising already-available CDs which I already bought.
One of these days, I'm gonna sit down and write a longer letter...
Not to rub salt in the wound, but WHERE does one apply for the 15% discount for subscribers for the box set? Thanks for any help!
Product scarcity drives up its price, whether its drugs or box sets.
Even if I had the money, I wouldn't seal the deal until the seller had it in hand.
Chris - I forgot to apply my 15% discount when I purchased Archive 2. I sent an email to customer service with my code. The money was refunded.
Indeed.. Neil Young is no fool. Why does he keep releasing from the 70's, it's because he knows it was his best time. Who would want to buy NYA Vol ? with music from the 90's. Shame on you Neil.
Hi Dane...Thanks. Now. What code?
Totally off topic: did anytime notice that Poncho has been replaced by a CGI version of himself in the Return to Greendale movie? The original footage had him wearing a light coloured T-shirt, now there is a suit and hat wearing CGI Poncho with a lot less gray hair!
Sounds like a good question for the editor to me!
I checked with Tom from sugar mountain, who mentioned this on his website and he sent me some screenshots to confirm it.
@Chris If you are an NYA subscriber, you should have received an email from them with a coupon code for use at the Greedy Hand store. I had also forgotten about that, as it had been nearly two years since I initially subscribed. But the code was still there. Email subject line was "Thank you for purchasing a subscription!", so you could try to search your inbox on that or "neilyoungarchives.com" [the sender] and it should show up. Check your spam folder, too, if it's not in the inbox. My discount code was also retroactively accepted.
My two cents:
They could have done presales to determine demand and plan accordingly. That being said, many bands produce limited edition boxsets. I still have my Bob Marley with limited edition number printed on the box ..and that was over 20 years ago! So it's not strange or anything for Neil to do likewise.
Neil as spent decades saying CDs don't sound good, so why sell not set it as vinyl?
Didn't Neil say everything in the box will be available a la carte next year? Why not wait and get it piecemeal...might be a bit more but not ebay prices. Also, you can skip things you don't want or already have
I lackadaisically (stoned) ordered a copy over Saturday morning coffee from NYA not knowing it was limited to 3000 units. I have no intention ever selling it for a quick profit. It will sit next to my 11 year old Vol I box.
What bothers me, is when Vol III, IV, V are released, I don't want to have to go to the secondary market and pay 10 times the price to keep building a matched set of the Archives.
@ Harm - thanks for heads up. TW Investigative Team is on the case. See http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2020/11/cgi-poncho-digital-mafioso-return-to.html
3 Grand for what?? People are nuts.
Three grand for whatever reason the one who purchased it thought worthy? we all know that many people have money to toss away and perhaps three grand for this person was like five lousy bucks to one of us? I must admit, it seems pretty stupid. What I do not really understand is how this benefits Neil Young. He is wise enough to recognize that one aspect of his great appeal is ongoing integrity, both musically and in relation to the produced music for sale. Hence, it seems that this whole business is self-contradictory and self-defeating. But what do we really know? Because I am a musical idiot, I will eventually find the songs I really want to hear without worrying over the perfect sound quality.
I'm a happy customer of TIDAL and also neilyoungarchives.com and will get it all in hi-res format soon enough. No more need to buy such a dust-catcher anymore, especially not at these ridiculous prices. :-)
Thanks Cyclebrarian for the info...I have written Greedyhand (indeed) customer service and await resolution. Now. When will Archives 2 be shipped again? Hahaha...I forgot! Thanks!
I hope NY and co. are aware that the limited edition deal has been abused in what amounts to extortion of fans and collectors. That's what the ebay price range on NYAII look like to me. Plus, as someone else said, even if I had that kind of money for discretionary spending, there's no way I'm giving it to a complete stranger online before the item has even been publicly released.
What evidence do these ebay sellers have that they've even ordered a copy of the box set to sell on? And given Neil's history of delaying the Archives, frankly, how can we even be certain there won't be another massive "whoopsie" resulting in the box set not shipping on 11/20? The potential for fraud should obvious here.
Good point Ian, a sucker is born every minute, american capitalism at its finest. I have turned into one cheap bastard lately, in the last few years. Yelling at kids to get off my lawn, kind of like that absurd Grandpa character in Greendale. In fact, Greendale is so ripe for parody it is classic- although I do not think this is a reason to judge it poorly. Neil was trying to get at big stuff and this always opens up one to parody and satire. Let's keep our sense of humor as the world falls apart. I can't believe the comments this thread produced, big oil in Canada, etc... some of it a bit frightening. I'm going to get into my monster truck now and go buy some ding dongs to go with my Coke.
Regarding the discount code mentioned before, I have one since I subscribed to NYA two years ago and it is still not used. Will probably use it for Archives vol. 2 but as it turns out, the code does only work in the US store, not the EU store! I have contacted customer service and I am waiting for their reply now ...
