More on  50th Anniversary of Neil Young's "After The Gold Rush" with a major essay by Harvey Kubernik .

 From PR:
Neil Young and Reprise Records are pleased to announce the 50th Anniversary Edition of Young’s classic record After the Gold Rush, which will arrive on CD/Digital on December 11. The deluxe vinyl box set will follow on March 19.

The 50th Anniversary Edition vinyl box set features a variant of the artwork, originally created by Neil’s long-time art director Gary Burden, made in collaboration with Grammy Award-winning artist Jenice Heo. The set also includes a 7” single in a picture sleeve with two versions of album outtake “Wonderin’.” Side A, originally included in The Archives Vol. 1: 1963-1972, was recorded in Topanga, California, in March 1970, and Side B is a previously unreleased version recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood in August 1969. A litho print of the album’s front cover is exclusively included in this vinyl box set. The CD format of the 50th Anniversary Edition includes the new artwork and both versions of “Wonderin’.”

The timelessness and influence of After the Gold Rush is difficult to overstate. From the iconic LP cover of Young walking in New York against a brick backdrop to the long-running legacies of songs like the incendiary “Southern Man” and the melancholy “Only Love Can Break Your Heart,” the album has felt vital in each of the five decades since its release. In fact, its title track, with Young’s time-traveling and apocalyptic visions of California, places it firmly in the here and now. Young’s re-working of the song’s lyrics for live performances over the years casts that fact in a chilling clarity: “Look at Mother Nature on the run in the 21st century.” This 50th Anniversary Edition is both a celebration for longtime fans, and a chance for new ears to take in its continued relevance.

So... it's past 9am PT and no ATGR that I can see in the Greedy Hand Store?

Yeah, I don't see it on there yet.

It's there now, but that's a hell of a price for the vinyl!

If you still don't see it, try putting 'After' in the search box.

At 10/30/2020 12:22:00 PM, Blogger bob g said...

Yup, you actually have to search for it. I thought there was supposed to be a live show from the era included? My bad memory I guess. The only extras are two versions of 'Wonderin''.

I went on to the Warners store and it was on there before Greedy Hand... again. Neil probably won't be happy about that again.

Well, I guess the hi-res download, too. That's something anyway.

$120 Canadian for one vinyl album, one 45 single and a "lithograph." What the hell? Is this a mistake?

Maybe it should include the Young Shakespeare live album??

Ok, it's on there now. $18.98 for 2 versions of Wonderin' appended to the end of the cd. Vinyl set is $99.98...

I'm starting to feel ripped off. Green Dale at £89, Archives at £210 and now Goldrush at £98???? All in a month. OK I don't have to buy any of it but its way over the top particularly ATG. Not buying it. Period

At 10/30/2020 02:14:00 PM, Blogger Unknown said...

Why is the ATGR vinyl so expensive? That’s crazy money!

At 10/30/2020 02:17:00 PM, Blogger Matthew Hart said...

I agree. Colorado had 2xLP plus 7" vinyl for less than half the price. There's no need for a box, there's not be enough product to justify it. I'll probably buy the CD for the extra version of Wonderin' and that will do.

At 10/30/2020 02:21:00 PM, Blogger Unknown said...

The vinyl box is a series mistep. Most of us would have either the original vinyl, or, the vinyl from Original Series Volume 1 Box, reissued in all original artwork. Now, an offer of the exact same item, and a litho + a 7” single for €120, sorry Neil, this is very dissapointing, and a total rip off.

At 10/30/2020 02:26:00 PM, Blogger MILM said...

Neil keeps literally reaching out his "Greedy Hand" without delivering little if anything new of value. Seems like a blatant money grab to fill his retirement coffers..

At 10/30/2020 02:27:00 PM, Blogger maf said...

Not sure how a 12" LP and a 7' single can constitute a box set? Seems like most of Neil's vinyl re-issues are excessively expensive but this one is bonkers!

I'm going to assume that this is a mistake and the pricing will be corrected. And, if anyone actually bought it. Refunds will be issued. Just like "bumper stickers". Originally the thought was to issue this as a real box set; including the live Young Shakespeare future release. Perhaps the price is reflecting that concept. Thus, I would be all over it.

At 10/30/2020 02:40:00 PM, Blogger Matthew Hart said...

The Greendale box is better value at a few quid more, but even then it's the vinyl you can get at less than £25 outside the box, the Inside Greendale DVD many of us already forked out for as a second edition at the time, which means the Blu-ray footage of the concert plus a box effectively costs over £75 (yes, there's a CD but if you've got the vinyl and download what's the point).

At 10/30/2020 03:47:00 PM, Blogger JVJ said...

Anyone know if the Greedy Hand store does split shipments? Want to order this and Greendale together, but hesitant on having Greendale held up with mid-December or whenever Gold Rush actually gets released.

Checked their FAQ - might have overlooked it, but didn't seem to get a clear answer.

Boy, Neil ain't kidding when he names his store "The Greedy Hand." He's disappointed me yet again with a $120 retail price tag for a single LP and a single; oh, and a printed piece of paper.

It’s bizarre, I just don’t get it! Release a box set of unreleased rarities that all his fans will desperately want, but only make 3000 copies available worldwide. Then Re-release an album all his fans have already (in some cases 4 times!) with a 7 inch bonus disc for £100, but not in a limited edition!

Again, interesting to compare with Elton John who today released a limited edition (5000 copies) 10 inch Vinyl of an unreleased outtake, to promote his non-limited rarities boxset our next month. That seems a better balance - a limited rarity for the completists and fanatics but make the box set available to all fans, now and in the future.

The ATGR vinyl set price is madness. Has it even been remastered since the last re-release? (No I think). So even if I buy the CD for £9.99 all I’m getting that I don’t already own is the bonus track of Wonderin with vibraphones. Think I’ll cope!

It’s similar to how I feel about Time Fades Away on CD - whenever he is asked Neil says it’s available on CD (see letters to the editor last week), but it’s only available as a very expensive box set of albums we all have already, so effectively fans are being asked to pay £80 for Time Fades Away, which is ludicrous. I could understand if he refused to release it at all, but since that’s not the case it seems a deliberate ploy to make money. I don’t blame Neil for this, I think it’s clear from Lincvolt, Pono, NYA etc that he’ll plough vast amounts of his own money Into things if he thinks it’s worth it and has never ever come across as greedy - despite the name of his online store! But somewhere in the line through Neil, his management and the record company there is someone who thinks Neil Young fans are mugs and will pay whatever is asked for any old product. Let’s prove them wrong!

At 10/30/2020 07:35:00 PM, Blogger Harm said...

I hate bonus tracks. I want to listen to the album in its original form, which with bonus tracks, i.e. tracks that were not deemed good enough to be included on the original release, is impossible. The new version of Wonderin' should have been in NYA Vol. 1. In any case, I expect it to be on Early Daze too. Besides, I prefer the 1970 version with Nils Lofgren and the live version from Fillmore East.

But wait! The exclusive 12" x 12" litho is...................A picture of the album cover!

Pretty clear that Thrasher puts more effort into his blog posts than Neil does RE giving his fans what they want at reasonable prices. Wonderin’ what input Darryl has on these decisions?

(charging for that recent EP was absurd. most musicians would have offered it as a free download.)

Crazy pricing. Will I buy it, probably. Already got an original release, plus the ORS03 version but as a die hard collector I'll have to get this too. Expensive time being a NY fan at the moment.

Even the conversion rate from $ to £ for us in the U.K. are way off.
The CD is $19 and £10.
The vinyl is $100 and £98.

At the same conversion as the CD, the Vinyl should be £53. Still too pricey in all honesty.

This is ridiculous so non-fans have ordered archives 2 to resell ? A healthy margin ! After the gold rush indeed, perhaps the old lady needs some more work. My order for 2 was accepted then rejected.

At 10/31/2020 10:20:00 AM, Blogger Dan Swan said...

After carefully reading the product description on the Greedy Hand, it says the records will be individually numbered but there is no mention of a limited edition anywhere. Perhaps they should have done this with Archive Volume Two. Allowing fans to preorder ahead of time and then manufacture the product once they have an idea of how many people want to actually spend the money. Obviously it would have added up to far more than 3000 copies. That way the fans would have had the opportunity to own the box set and the record company would have made more money.

Unfortunately, the 50th anniversary edition of After The Gold Rush is so completely over priced, they have once again shot themselves in the proverbial foot. This recent activity with Warner Brothers Records is clear evidence of complete ineptitude. I’m sure the product being offered will be a beautiful reissue, but I’m finding it extremely difficult to justify paying $100 for one LP, a 45rpm, and a lithograph. As a Neil Young completist, this is a hard pill to swallow.

Neil needs to be more involved in how his product is being marketed, as this latest product feels like a cold slap in the face for this particular fan.

Peace 🙏

Somebody at Warners must have made a mistake: 119,99 Euros make up for 140 US$ (in words: hundred and fourty). Maybe someone having done his or her math should explain this trick with the exchange rates to them? 99,98 US $ make up for 86,00 Euros. Or is that a sneaky attempt to make the dollar great again? Oh, I forgot the European NY outlet will be outside the EU and our British neighbours by the time of release somehow will have to make ends meet (risk and contingency?).

March 19, 2021--wtf? On the "Wonderin' " video posted to YouTube, street date was given as December 11. I'm not even buying it, but someone in NYA marketing needs to get their act together.

Just caught up with Eldorado being the final part of Box Set 4 together with Reactor, HAD and TNFY. Those 3 have been out for a while with ORS numbers. However, for the completist, more expense. I am beginning to lose faith Neil. How much is that going to be? £200? £250?
