Neil Young Archives Volume II (1972 - 1976) Boxsets Begin to Arrive Around the EARTH
As noted this weekend, already some lucky Neil Young fans have received shipment of Neil Young Archives Volume II (1972 - 1976).
A photo gallery of the contents of Neil Young Archives Volume II (1972 - 1976) can be viewed on Rusted Moon.
Sadly, there's much frustration over the distribution and ordering for NYA#2 -- particularly with the U.K. Greedy hand store -- as noted in comments on this post.
Book Fold Out: Neil Young Archives Volume II (1972 - 1976)
via Rusted Moon
Otherwise, most are thrilled that NYA#2 is available for streaming and download, while awaiting shipment.
For us, many stunning revelations in the unreleased songs and tracks. And hearing songs in their original sequence is revealing on how history would have been different if this music had been released long ago.
And we await for our little box at the top of the stairs ....

Can anyone explain what could possibly be Special Release Series #3 and #4 if Homegrown is #2 and Hitchhiker is #5, right after vol. II ends on the timeline? Chrome Dreams and Oceanside/Countryside are both chronologically later than Hitchhiker.
Anybody notice Odeon Budokan still has a post it note near the archives one? not sure if that's a accident/spot for a standalone disc, or separate show to be released? On wikipedia odeon budokan is listed as performance series 6. my guess is Early Daze is SRS 1 or Harvest Time, 3 and 4 might mean Human Highway and or Homefires are still a possibility although The Old Homestead seems to "Homefires". Otherwise maybe the discs in archives vol. 2 might have a special release series #3 and #4 that we don't know about?
Recently Neil announced (in the letters section I believe, somewhere on the site anyway) that Odeon Budokan will be a separate, longer, release next year.
Just added as a release on Discogs. Feel free to update/enhance the metadata and photos. https://www.discogs.com/Neil-Young-Neil-Young-Archives-Vol-II-1972-1976/release/16262491

got mine yesterday UK (ordered from US)
no COA tho.. was it supposed to be in box?
I’m happy that folks are finally receiving their box sets. I’m assuming that they are being shipped in the order that they were actually ordered on line from the US store, as mine isn’t due to be delivered until late tomorrow, and I live in the US. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to be waiting, as there were so many others who weren’t even able to order one the first go around.
Peace 🙏
As far as I know, SRS 03 was thought to be Homefires with Homegrown outtakes, or possibly the Time Fades Away II album project though that has faded from view in the meantime.
SRS 04 was originally expected to be Odeon Budokan but that has changed too now.
No one has said there can't be gaps in the sequence since the numbering appears to have been started before anyone knew for sure that was going to be in the list.
If you haven't seen this from the horse's mouth check it out. It explains it all (not).
https://neilyoungarchives.com/news/1/article?id=Hanlon-NYA-Numbering-System-page-1
@Rasselas53, J. Hanlon said about the numbering: "there are no rules" !
When the Archives vol 2 was released last friday, Odeon Budokan was listed as disc 10 AND NYAPS n° 06 but this information has dissapeared !
I believed Odeon Budokan will be NYSR n°4 because it's an unreleased album (even if it's a live recording), and expected Homefires as number 3... But what can we get on Homefires which is not on the Archives vol 2 ? And if Odeon Budokan is not n°4, how is it possible to get enough material for 2 albums... I don't understand... Or the numbering is not chronological and Chrome Dreams and Country Side are these numbers...
Beside that, we know that Paradox is n° 10... So what are the candidates to fill the gaps ? Certainly Toast... For the other one, maybe Ragged Glory extended and Eldorado extended (with Sixty to zero...) ? Or Old Ways 2 ? Island In The Sun ?
Beside these, don't forget, there could be a bootleg serie release in april 2021 (perhaps).
Well, too many things at the same time ;-)
Hanlon's letter seems to make it appear that SRS is pretty concrete as opposed to the performance series with the fractions accounting for newly unearthed live material. Odeon Budokan I thought would be more than likely a performance series release than Special Release. In hanlon's words Special release series are for "studio projects".
Still hoping there's enough material for Human Highway; I thought I read in one of Neil's books that most of the tracks for Long May You Run had Crosby and Nash harmonies but were scrapped to make it a Stills-Young album instead. If this is true and not a figment of my imagination there is more material from this session than what showed up on Archives vol.2
Other thoughts,
Anybody notice the artwork change for Roxy in vol.2? I'm guessing Neil wanted a more consistent text across the releases. I suspect Odeon Budokan will have slightly different art when that gets a standalone release.
Also Im really impressed with Archives vol.2 but the Tonights the Night disc is very underwhelming, its like listening to Tonights the Night with a bonus track or two on shuffle. Same with On the beach, but Dume is more impressive almost there are enough new tracks to make it worth listening to over the original. I guess I was expecting Tonight's the night acetate with drunk segues or unmixed ragged versions of the tracks. The Old Homestead is unbelievable though what a great mellow set just like hitchhiker.
One observation,
My audio system tells me all CD are HDCD
Unlike Homegrown and Roxy I buy before.
Strange !
Sound is great.
I wish Neil would just drop post its allover the Archives timeline so we weren't guessing because im sure he has more releases ready to go or a least "planned". This would take away from all the speculation but Neil love to keep our imaginations running as to what might be...
Even if there isn't enough new material for a SRS 3&4 I wouldn't put it past Neil to put out a release or two with 1 or so Unreleased track/mix and new artwork. Look at ATGR 50th a unreleased mix of one song,
archives vol.2 is a strange concept in marketing. Its not a comp like Decade, with greatest hits for the average fan and 2 unreleased tracks for the die-hards. vol. 2 was originally a limited run clearly only for the deepest fans, yet it had three discs that were already released over the last few years as teasers and im sure most of us have already purchased 1 if not all of those already. Than Odeon Budokan is going to be rereleased at some point in a "longer form". Than we have about 2.5 discs of unreleased material (this is really what we are here for right). Then the original releases everybody has most if not all of.
When Volume One was originally released back in the day, I was frustrated with the fact that Neil included previously released songs and albums, essentially due to the rather hefty investment required to buy it. But as time went on and I had a chance to listen to each disc as it’s own entity, I began to appreciate Neil’s intentions in presenting his music. Every song is included with the purpose of telling us his story, and now that I’ve had the time to know each disc for its part of the whole, I can now genuinely appreciate the story actually being told. As with most important recordings, the sequencing is the crucial element of the whole, and few know how to do that more successfully than Mr. Neil Young.
Peace 🙏
Well, if you look at the tentative tracklist of 30-or-so recorded songs for Homegrown, there is plenty unreleased material there for one or maybe two records, much of which hasn't shown up on Archives II.
There are a few live tracks from Odeon concert on 'Look out for my love/disc 9' which are not on the Odeon/Budokan disc.
Help needed,
I have ordered one of the first 3000 boxes. So far I have not seen anything from Greedy Hand. No mail, no box. I have a order no. but it is impossible to track as the link sends me to Greedy hand and there is no logg in button any longer. Have sent two messages to their customer service, no reply.
I understand that some of you have been able to track your shipments, does anyone have any clue what to do?
Lennart in Sweden
@Lennart331
I guess you have ordered from the UK Store. If so, use this link to find your status:

I managed to get a reply from The UK Greedy Hand Store:

@ Phil & Paul - thanks for clarifications on numbering. It is all a bit confusing but Hanlon did say it's not exact science. Shakey numbers if you will. no surprise.
@ Dan - really excellent point about sequencing and totally agree.
The story is in the sequence, much like a neil's setlist tells a tale.
quickly, Exhibit A would be the recent Homegrown album. The song "Florida" makes sense now in the context of its placement between the songs "Mexico" and "Kansas". see
http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2020/07/the-mystery-of-neil-youngs-florida.html
much the same can be said of concert setlists telling a story, like the 2008 solo tour.
on 2008 you had mini song theme sets telling the stories w/ songs like:
Ambulance Blues / Kansas / Sad Movies / Mexico / A Man Needs A Maid / Harvest / Love In Mind / Journey Through The Past
Love/Art Blues / Love Is A Rose / Out On The Weekend
Old Man / The Loner / Dirty Old Man /
you get the idea.
Day #5 awaiting NYA#2 delivery and counting ...
peace
Thank you very much Kim, much appreciated👍
Will check this first thing tomorrow morning.
Lennart
@ Thrashers: Talk about sequencing a set list. We were blessed to see Neil’s solo concert in Austin Texas on June 5, 2010 at Bass Hall.
The set list:
My My Hey Hey (out of the blue)
Tell Me Why
Helpless
You Never Call
Peaceful Valley Blvd.
Love and War
Down By The River
Hitchhiker
Ohio
Sign Of Love
Leia
After the Gold Rush
I believe in You
Rumblin’
Cortez the Killer
Cinnamon Girl
Old Man
Walk With Me
Definitely one of the best shows I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending. Not only were the performances brilliant, but the song choices and sequencing was clearly intended to share a deep and personal story of love, loss, joy, sadness and the emotional struggles we all share.
Neil’s willingness to open up and share his personal experiences covering the complete spectrum of the human condition was breathtaking to witness, and a testimony to his fearlessness as an artist.
Peace 🙏
Was there supposed be a letter with the box confirming the limited quantity? Numbered? I have not opened the box yet.
@Unknown : As far as we know, there is no number on this first run set. I assume that the letter of authenticity will come later as it was an afterthought after all the drama of it selling out so fast in the first place. The next deluxe edition doesn’t ship until March 5th, so the set you have in your hands is the limited to 3,000 worldwide release.
I suggest you open it and start enjoying the music.
Peace 🙏
@ Dan - an amazing setlist. so cool you were able to attend and hear the stories spool out.
the concerts are an emotional roller coaster which build into an emotional climax at about 2/3 point, much like the classic 3 act play. Like you say, the audience travels the roads of love (Act #1), loss and sadness (Act #2) & end in joy (Act #3).
The play continues ... the artist and audience locked in embrace as one.
"The lights turned on and the curtain fell down,
And when it was over it felt like a dream"

my Archives II box just arrived here in beautiful Loudoun County, Virginia, USA...so thankful to get one...what timing...
Has anyone in Canada received their NY Archives Volume 2 yet? I've received my digital downloads and have listened numerous times online, but I haven't been successfull in tracking my physical package. Any suggestions on how to do that? Thanks.
Any luck, Lennart? I'm still waiting for any kind of notification from the UK store and no download either. I e-mailed them on Wednesday and no response yet.
Still no response to my request for the download code here in Leeds, UK. Sent several emails and just getting radio silence. Hoping when they finally ship the boxes an email might go out. Greedy Hand is beyond useless.
Same for me. The way they treat customers is a total disgrace. Perhaps Neil and his management should step forward and do something about it. Neil’s big fanbase in Europe may be reluctant to order anything again from The Greedy Hand store if this shambolic way of doing business is not changed very quickly.
I still haven't heard anything despite mailing the UK greedy hand twice and the US greedy hand once. I, like most of us on here I imagine, buy everything that Neil releases, but if Neil were to announce that physical copies of his next release were only available through the greedy hand, well, that would result in me not buying a new Neil release for the first time in over 30 years, that's how strongly and saddened I feel about how we've been treated.
I wrote the above post (Unknown At 11/27/2020 09:26:00 AM).
Perhaps an apology to Thrasher and his excellent blog is reasonable here because of all the posts with problems many customers in Europe have had with The Greedy hand Store. I guess it was not the intention with the blog. But this is the only place where we can help each other and keep each other informed about the frustrating problems concerning the UK Store and Archives Vol 2.
Hopefully these problems will soon be solved so Thrashers Wheat again can focus on Neil and his music instead of endless business problems.

Same here. No box and no download code from Greedy Hand UK. No delay notification, no apology. Nothing. I've e-mailed twice now, no response.
Hi folks, And thanks to Thrasher for continuing to host the box set delivery discussion. Has anyone in the UK received theirs yet? I checked he 'UK Greedy Store' and mine hasn't even been shipped. I dropped them a line, so will post any response on here. Take care everyone!
I have not heard anything since an email asking for details as had not had email with hi res info etc. Since then nothing and as others have emailed warners greedy hand in UK and USA, also contacted NYA. No response anywhere. Found email address here which got me into my account- who has an online site that you cannot access your info from!! I have a theory that warners greedy hand sold more copies than they actually had, they then had to chose which site they were going to stuff and chose the UK with it's history of stiff upper lip and not complaining!! They are in the meantime hastily producing more sets, while saying problems with customs etc. Perhaps they should have stated that the cross Atlantic swimmer could only carry one boxset at a time, might have been more believable!!! This is my warped theory but could be true who knows as usually there is no problem with the greedy hand of warners. Cheers Wee Eck
I don't understand how difficult it is to send an e-mail to say sorry there's been a delay, but here's your download code in the meantime.
It's not Neil's fault per se, it's Warners. Their online store and service is shocking. I only place orders there when I have to, and they seem mess something up around 50% of the time, often poor packing and it turns up damaged, and then it takes ages to get any response.
Once I had two back to back (non Neil) damaged orders. They somehow managed to confuse two completely separate replacement requests so I ended up with four copies of one order (two damaged) and one of the other (still damaged!). In the end I gave up. It just wasn't worth my time.
Wow - even Give Me Strength is a take I’ve never heard...those little sound effects that he still throws in some songs are so great
I remember listening to The Way on Chrome Dreams II over & over trying to make sure I was really hearing a ping pong ball or whatever it is
No box in sight yet. But thanks to my Danish friend Kim I can at least see my order again. It says: Packing, not shipped.
No replies on my three mails, dead silence.
I would have appreciated a short mail from Warner.
I assume you haven't received it yet Matthew? What about you Kim?
Disc 6 - Through My Sails - a jaw dropping demo...or whatever it is...this track alone is worth the price of the entire Volume II...Zuma's recording of this song goes away now for me...wow...drop D modal tuning like so many other early classics Neil wrote...man I am seriously in heaven here
no offense to CSN
LOL
@Lennart331
Glad I could help you to find tour order status. No, I haven’t received anything yet. I have also written to Warner and to the UK Store again, but nothing happens. They informed earlier that an email with all of the details was sent to purchases of the box set on 11/20/20 – but that is not true. As Andrew Byrom wrote in a post: “Fake news, they never sent an email. Checked with two other people who ordered off the UK store and none of us received it on the 20th Nov.”. It seems nobody ordering from the UK Store has received it. A complete disgrace that such an established record company can treat their customers like this.
Since it seems to affect all European customers who ordered from the UK Store they could at least write a message on The Greedy Hand webpage. If Neil’s atchives team follow this blog they are well aware of all our problems and frustrations. I think Neil's team/management should step in and do something about it. For a start a message in The Times Contrarian to show they are aware of this mess and what will be done about it would be appreciated.

I send a customer service message on the NYA website yesterday to make sure the Archives team are aware of the problem. Fingers crossed we get something soon.
The Archive Team knows the situation. They helped me last Monday to contact the US store and receive my download code. I get them quickly. But I am still waiting for any information from uk store. Moreover my subscription to NYA was automaticaly renewed this friday for 19.99 $. I wrote again to NYA for an explanation. So they are totally aware of this failure. At least, a message is necessary on the NYA site...
No, still nothing Lennart.
The Archive Team has send me this message just a few minutes ago:
"Thanks for getting back to us and letting us know the situation.
We're so sorry to hear you're having problems getting a response from the Greedy Hand team. We have raised your enquiry with them directly and asked them to take care of this as a matter of urgency. I'll let you know as soon as we have an update.
Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience here.
We appreciate your patience."
Phil, I've received the exact same message today from the Archive Team. It's the first response I've had. I've emailed the UK greedy hand twice, the US greedy hand once, and in complete frustration, the NYA. At least the Archive Team have had the decency to respond, albeit with a templated generic reply.
I've tried to cancel my ATGR order with greedy hand UK. No acknowledgement and my order is still listed. I think we will be lucky to see the box set this side of Xmas.
Yes I have had the same message too my email to NYA didn't pull any punches. Also rang warners but would you believe it I could not be put through to customer services despite protestations about the absolute shit the service was, so once again for the 16 th time another email to the greedy hand of warners. As I keep on saying greedy hand of warners lived up to its name and took too many orders and are working out what to do or rapidly trying to produce more sets, perhaps they should try China. If sets are available then why have they not sent the emails, that would at least keep punters happy,.They dare not in case we have to be fobbed of with issue 2!! Just my theory
I've finally received the codes and my NYA membership. I can only imagine that getting the NYA team involved has had some effect. I'm very grateful to them, but isn't it a shame that the service has been so bad that we had to resort to that? No word on the box itself though......
@Unknown. I get that you're upset and indeed its pretty frustrating to be waiting for our boxsets, but please keep your conspiracy theories to yourself. As with the launch when everyone started speculating it had sold out within minutes after the US link disappeared, I am sure there is a prosaic explanation for the delay. The boxes being held up on their way from the US makes sense, particularly as this is the first delivery for the recently opened UK Greedy Hand store. In the middle of a lockdown in the UK and a global pandemic. Yes, the launch has been shambolic and the lack of communication awful, but we have the music on NYA. That should be more than enough while we wait. Patiently.
Yes I get your point but why has there been an inability to send out the emails with hi res and NYA membership? Even with Covid and lockdown 2, people are still working from home and as has been stated before, it is surely not beyond the bounds of reality that emails could be sent even from home. I agree but given the initial fiasco which I was totally unaware of, went out for day and ordered set at close to midnight, it doesn't fill one with hope. Also warners have been in the UK for decades but you ring them and try to get put through to customer services- no chance- it is email only!! Smack on wrist accepted!!!!!!!
Unknown / Leigh, I've just tried posting this on the other thread but it wouldn't accept it [maybe 106 comments are the maximum], but where did this info about supplier problems originate please? My status still says "not shipped / packing".
I got my codes after a message to the NYA team, then the codes came through the next morning. I haven't had any extension to my NYA membership and no word on the boxes.
Got email from greedy hand of warners saying the problem with receiving stock from supplier yesterday. At least it was different from stuck in customs. I have emailed warners 3 times daily also tried warners usa and for good measure NYA all have replied. Have got download code now but not membership. I know I have been told to shut up But I believe too many orders were taken etc
Same situation for me: still waiting for subscription code and, of course, the shipping.
I'm really disappointed that there is no information about the situation on NYA...
Also, I think they have taken too many orders and we will have to wait up to march to get the version 2 (maybe with an apology note...).
To the people requiring we shut up, I remind them our credit card were charged in october. So more than 200 pounds are out of our pockets (and 20 $ for the automatic subscription renewed last week automaticaly)...
I've just received an email saying that the boxes have now cleared customs and will be shipped next week. Fingers crossed...
My brother works for warnerners UK
Yes ! I've received the mail about shipping next week and another with the one year free subscription... fingers crossed, sure !
Received this message 2 hours ago:
"Dear Customer,
As you may be aware, our shipment of Archives II box sets had been held up in customs.
We are happy to report that it’s now been released and your order will be shipping next week.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.
We’re anxious for you to receive and enjoy this amazing body of work.
Warner Music"
Still no code for download and 1 year subscription to NYA, though. But progress anyway.
Kim
Denmark
Hopefully you will receive your box shortly now Kim!!
I have finally got a reply to all my mails. Just saying that they are sorry for the mess. No info. about when they expect to send it to me, no mail with download code. Hope I get it before Christmas. Take care Kim
Lennart
Tomorrow is a long, long time when you're an Archives box set.
1. Ordered and paid the Deluxe limited edition to the Canadian store on October 20
2. Box set released on November 20
3. ELectronic label issued by Warner Canada on November 26 only (why?)
4. Box set processed by Canada Post on November 28
5. Delivery announced in France: between 1 and 2 months from December3.
Welcome to the 21st century, and keep on rockin' in the free world!
I assume the box set is traveling on a camel back, or maybe simply dancing across the water...
How can that be? Lucky people from Europe who received their box set within 10 days.
In the meantime I am enjoying the digital version...
