POLLS ARE NOW OPEN: Neil Young Archives New Releases Survey

The polls are now open to vote on the Neil Young Archives New Releases Survey!

Votes can be cast @ Neil Young Archives New Releases Survey | NYA.

Oddly, the voting doesn't seem to be restricted to only NYA subscribers? Even more oddly, the survey allows multiple ballots by the same voter? Therefore, the results are unlikely to be representative of the NYA subscriber base. (See our suggestions below on methodology improvements.)

So, definitely vote with your conscience. And here are the nominees:

Well, as they say: VOTE. And VOTE often!

Or for some honest polling results, follow the guidance of UNOFFICIAL Neil Young Unreleased Archive - NYUA, who recommends: Ducks, Toast and Island In The Sun.

But don't let the pollsters steer you wrong -- Vote with your conscience! Given that the results are unlikely to be representative of the NYA subscriber base, look to demands for a recount by fans. NYA should consider re-conducting poll using same methodology for ticket sales where each subscriber is given a one time only redemption code for voting.

More on fans voting on releases that are "In The Can" on Neil Young Archives.

"In The Can"

Once again, the possibilities are mind boggling with over 25+ completed audio and/or film projects that are "In The Can", unreleased and ready to go.

Per Lone Red Rider, who posted last month:
A poll is being conducted on the FB RUST page.

So far, with 255 respondents, Homegrown is far and away the favorite, followed by Toast and Chrome Dreams. Catalyst (1990) is a close 4th. Then the Ducks in 5th place.

I voted this morning and I don’t intend to vote a second time because, as you mentioned, it would defeat the purpose of a vote. It was a hard choice because frankly I want all of these to be released. Like most fans I’m sure.

Peace.

I think this vote will turn out to be like one of those dummy elevator "close door" buttons - not actually plugged into anything, but makes you feel at ease.

https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/547416/do-close-door-buttons-elevators-actually-do-anything

The truth is that Neil would never have made any of his most interesting albums if designed by committee, by what was popular. A system that works for mainstream politics is a terrible way of making art.

Now, BEFORE I'm accused of being a grumpy old goat (!), that doesn't mean I think the vote is a bad thing; now that the albums are safely in the can. Listening to his subscriber base is a wonderful idea, gets us feeling involved: even if the ballot box is in fact a paper shredder. But my guess is he will see the results and then release Return To Greendale anyway.

And from my perspective, that wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Greendale (the album, not the film) is one of those projects that failed to make its mark first time around, despite being one of Neil's most creative and idiosyncratic albums of the 21st century, far more artistic than anything even the old master Dylan has done in decades (who is probably still busy cutting and pasting lines together because he has talked himself out of actually writing something).

First and foremost, it's an album about life, about people and their relationships. About love and loss and living in the country. About finding your niche, breaking out. It's an album that is pure Neil Young, as individual and as subtly expressive as anything he has ever done: full of offhand cranky observations, wise commentary on life, occasional breakings of the fourth wall, and slightly-dodgy lead guitar playing that has all the character of an clapped out old banger.

Does it deserve an electric live album (and film), recorded after Neil and the band had gotten deeper into the songs? I think the answer is very much 'YES!".

But maybe not before Rust Bucket, Alchemy or Mirrorball Live.

Scotsman.

Voted!
Well, I agree, to pick only three is a hard choice. Where to begin?
I didn't vote for Greendale, but would be happy to see it, too, of course. I like it. The film is kind of cool in its own way. They couldn't locate Sun Green we could read on NYA. Maybe Alaska?

At 2/05/2020 01:47:00 PM, Blogger Biscotte said...

Well, it's fine to vote but I'm still really sceptic... Last year, Neil announced Mirror Ball Live in Dublin on the Hearse theatre before to cancel it. Same thing for the exciting november 90 Crazy Horse show (apparently postponed in 2021 following a Neil message in the letters for editors),... Now, Homegrown seems surfacing and maybe the Greendale concert... I hope... But he has also promised the Archives Volume 2 release or Toast, Alchemy, Ragged Glory reissue, etc.
So I doubt Neil will follow our choices... Still erratic...
Anyway, I will appreciate all new releases BUT they should be faster... I remind you the first NYP dates from... 2006.

Welcome back Scotzman. Neil has already said that the Greendale project is coming this year so perhaps it shouldn’t even have been on the list. I too feel that Greendale the album is truly a remarkable work. Perhaps it was difficult for some when it was released because musically it had a sameness to it overall. I actually feel that the sameness was quite intentional and created a connected quality to the whole. Certainly one of Neil’s greatest works in my opinion. I’m looking forward to seeing the live performances from the tour as it’s clearly a unique take on the material.

Alchemy, Rust Bucket, and Mirror Ball are all ones I wait patiently for, as well as Catalyst. All the early stuff is also exciting for me, so I’m looking forward to everything listed.

It’s much like having a carrot dangling before us all, and I find it just a tad frustrating to be completely honest.

Peace

Along with Greendale (already receiving some limited theatrical screenings), Neil announced last week that "Young Shakespeare" (Stratford 1971) "becomes an album and film to be released in late 2020 on Reprise Records." But he also previously announced Rust Bucket and an expanded Eldorado as 2020 releases, so who knows. In any event, I also doubt the vote will have much influence on what actually happens.

Come on friends help me out here.

We want to see the 1970 CSNY show, That record hooked me and its so rare to see any footage from those shows...

#2 Island in the Sun, It's Raining in Paradise, Son Won't come...

Then its your choice but these two must be voted on...

This is absolutely hilarious that people actually think this will sway Neil's motivation whatsoever. The guy could EASILY release something exclusive to NYA ever quarter but he just doesn't. He's the most wishy washy mfer in the industry. I don't even know why I'm paying for NYA. I LOVE Neil, but boy oh boy does he know how to test patience.

Lots of good discussion here. are you passionate?

@ Scotsman - good to see you here in 2020.

hmmm, dummy elevator "close door" buttons?

the thought that NYA assembled this survey without regard to data collection and analysis certainly flies in the face of any sort of customer centric approach to doing business.

and while that may be Neil's historical modus operandi, he has stated that NYA is now his "life blood". So frankly it would be very stupid to run a sham survey and/or ignore the results.

can you imagine the rustie uproar? it would definitely be seen biting the feeding hand.

Regarding Greendale, yes totally agree that it deserves an electric live album (and film).

Babbo - definitely would like to see that expanded Eldorado. wonder why it wasn't listed on the poll?

Acoustic FeedBack - and good to see you here in 2020, as well. Your friends here are certainly glad to help out here.

Brother, can you spare a vote?

I’m hoping that someone can help me understand this. The audio components of the NYA seems to be just a high quality streaming mechanism for material that also has been released in traditional formats. There is no audio that’s exclusive to theNYA site. Is that correct?

At 2/06/2020 06:26:00 PM, Blogger Dan Swan said...

@Art Cary: For the most part, yes. The majority of the audio is for High quality streaming, but the timeline has several unique videos below the center line, and the Hearse Theatre is always showing films and videos in the highest quality available as well. When you take into account all the other features like lyrics, posters, ephemeral artifacts with each album and song, you begin to see the value. The Times Contrarian has many unique articles and information about upcoming releases, along with the ability to purchase everything Neil has released over the years. Not to mention the ability to write Neil directly and have him respond in kind. There are many more features but I think you get the general idea.

Peace.

At 2/06/2020 06:28:00 PM, Blogger Dan Swan said...

.... there is also new material available for listening before official releases too.

At 2/06/2020 06:57:00 PM, Blogger Dan Swan said...

The information in the timeline I mentioned along with the entire file cabinet is not available on smartphones. Only on a computer or tablet.

Why is there no “Greendale: Everything in one box set” option? Throw the Crazy Horse, solo, and studio recordings on the LPs and put the live videos and the movie on BluRays, and reprint the book and the graphic novel.

Oh no, no Greendale box set please, and all above: Don't tell Neil!
My last inventory list tells me, that I own:
Greendale 1st edition (CD + DVD Live at Vicar St. Dublin)
Greendale 2nd edition (CD + DVD Inside Greendale)
Greendale Book (Paperback Edition)
Neil Young's Greendale (Graphic Novel by Joshua Dysart and Cliff Chiang)
Greendale - The Film including a little movie poster
A Greendale handbill courtesy by one very friendly American fan
ROIOS of Munich, Hamburg and Amsterdam Greendale solo shows
A European tour compilation of the Greendale Solo Tour
A Greendale electric show from West Palm Beach, another one from Mountain View
A ticket stub of the Munich Greendale concert 2003
Tons of Mazzeo downloads from the L Gallery Greendale website in b/c and colour
and a hand drawn Green family tree written up by my then seven year old son and a red devil suit and...

I am pretty much ok with an official Greendale electric release and the stage show film. I missed out on the LP box set and that special 45 in green vinyl...

NYA V2 please

@ Dan - thanks for helping out Art's question. Certainly have had the same question.

Frankly, we've been a bit puzzled by NYA's ever shifting strategy. It seems that they discovered the big hit is HT. That's where you find what you don't have already and not for sale.

Still, if HT is the big traffic driver, than how about the concert streams? Both live and archived? We guess that's what folks really want, is the concert streams, especially live concerts.

Now Neil can't exactly curate NYA and tour simultaneously though. But if NYA is the lifeblood, then hit the road Neil.

Folks want NYA to get excellent seats, 1st. Then attend virtually 2nd. That could be a Tier onto itself.

Certainly Uncle Eddie's plea has really changed the direction of NYA to get it out of the can and in front of fans.

That said, we find it odd that the voting doesn't seem to be restricted to only NYA subscribers? Even more oddly, the survey allows multiple ballots by the same voter? Therefore, the results are unlikely to be representative of the NYA subscriber base.

As we suggest above, NYA should consider re-conducting poll using same methodology for ticket sales where each subscriber is given a one time only redemption code for voting.

anybody heard anything else about this "voting flaw"?

NYA fans shouldn't settle for a coin toss to determine the fate of "The Can" ... that would sort of be like the Iowa caucuses?!

At 2/07/2020 04:53:00 PM, Blogger Dan Swan said...

It seems to me that if indeed everything on the ballot is “in the Can”, One would assume that they are done and ready to go. if that’s the case then why not just upload all of it to NYA??? Then let the subscribers vote on what they want released commercially first. If Uncle Eddie is going to have the chance to hear all this amazing music before he passes on, then he needs access soon. I’m not a expert on website technology but I can’t imagine it would be that difficult to upload everything that is finished and put it up on NYA. Then Neil would know that Uncle Eddie would get the chance to hear this stuff. Along with everyone else who is subscribed to his archives site.

For me, this is the most intelligent solution.

Peace.

Toast! Toast! And... Toast!

No seriously, Toast sounds so cool. Everything about it seems mysterious and awesome. My favourite side of Neil is his murky meandering guitar work with Crazy Horse so I've always been intrigued by this.

Ragged Glory extended, Crazy Horse early daze and Bottom Line or Greendale stuff would be cool too.

At 2/09/2020 06:31:00 PM, Blogger Phil said...

We need more details and tracklist to vote... Toast is a good example: are there some unreleased and never heard songs on this album ???

At least I hope that next april will bring us Honmegrown. I dont want to be cynical or hypercritical, but the "Uncle Eddie" thing is just a romantic dream.
Neil is under contract with Warner/Reprise, and I think they will never allow him to upload first on NYA all his unreleased audio stuff.
