Neil Young's Film "Journey Through the Past" Coming to NYA Hearse Theater

Neil Young's Film "Journey Through the Past" is coming to NYA Hearse Theater per a recent posting on Times-Contrarian | NYA.

The 1973 film -- presciently referred to as "Early Neil Young as Reality TV" -- has long been an underground cult classic for fans with it's quite weird trippiness and stream of consciousness incomprehensibility.

As Neil Young writes on Times-Contrarian | NYA:

"I was not trying to impress anyone with my film making prowess and I succeeded."

Or -- as Neil Young puts it in his inimitable approach to the creative artistic process:

1972 and I'm sure it's not improved with age - Paradox is the same mess.

I’m still hoping that Neil will find it in his heart to remaster the soundtrack for the film as it is difficult to find a decent copy on vinyl. Even when it was originally released the pressings weren’t that great, I really think it deserves a new life on vinyl and CD, as I have always enjoyed the sequencing of the original soundtrack. I would have thought it would have been a part of the Archives Volume One, but we did get the film on Blu Ray which was really nice. Any, it’s just my pipe dream.

Dan: second that and it contains my favourite version of Ohio. Better than the studio version and 4 Way Street one.

That makes two of us i love That movie and soundtrack. Last week i sent a letter to The archivist if The soundtrack will ever be put on CD. Im so glad Neil gave TIME Fades Away a proper release on The Archives and on CD for me its Neils masterpiece.

Except for his performances in the movie this was probably the worst documentary I’ve ever seen. Said that when I saw it in my local college theater in the ‘70’s. Same when I saw it on NYA1 in 2009. . Though I love his music Shakey pictures is an ongoing travesty of self indulgent movie making.

Not all of the music is his. Rights payments toothers, such as the Beach Boys, makea rerelease prohibitive.

The soundtrack originally included the wonderful 'Let's Go Away For Awhile' by the Beach Boys

There was a time before 2005 when this website was the go to site for really good Neil content but not anymore. Fewer and fewer fans go to this site for a number of reasons. Attrition through old age and death, a decline in Neil’s ability to make any profound music that many fans can relate to. But something happened around the time of Living with War that tore the fabric of this formally great website a strong extreme lean to the left. Both you and NY took that road and alienated many many fans. Though I find myself in the middle an independent you have veered so far left and any perceived negativity you block. No honest discussions. You and NY are typical liberals ( not the civil rights working for the poor and laborer that my parents were but a hippie socialist leftist of a bygone era). Typical of Hollywood, academia and the media today. . I like to say a jackass with binders on. So sad. Both your site and NY has suffered. I actually prefer NY’s Archivist site. At least when I write they respond.

@ Dan, et al

The Blu Ray version of JTTP is prob the best quality audio that will ever be released....
There are Audio Extracting software products to be had on the innernet.
(most will only allow you to lift audio from a DVD. a separate, add-on, program will allow you to "unlock" Blu Ray audio).
I've done this fer all the other Blu Rays in the NYA1 set. Output was 24/192 & sounds great on the PoNo & other hi res players.

@ Andy - do you ever tire of your daily negativity?

@ Dan - always nice to have pipe dreams. Sometimes they might just come true.

@ Harm - good point on the JTTP version of Ohio. trying to recall source without looking up, but memory fails.

@ Unknown - yep the JTTP soundtrack is a real peice of work. But Neils masterpiece? Probably some pushback coming from somewhere...

@ timothy - "an ongoing travesty of self indulgent movie making." really? is there any other kind? is that not the definition of auteur?

@ Art - yes, the Beach Boys song probably does complicate things.

@ timothy - so after all these years reading this blog? we'll respond later.

@ ForeverYounger - unlocking Blu Ray audio isn't for amateurs, for sure.

somehow wee managed to work in auteurs and amateurs into same thread? we amuse ourselves sometimes.

@ Joe - thanks for submission. be on the lookout ... but we know you always are ...

I wish that the full version of “Soldier” that appears in the film would get a proper audio release. That tinkling piano intro is mesmerizing. Why only the edited version from Decade is available befuddles me...
