Attention Bergen Neil Young and Crazy Horse Fans: The Show Must Go On!

Bull Young

Tonight's scheduled Neil Young and Crazy Horse at the Bergenhus Festning, Bergen, Norway has been canceled, sadly.

But the show must go on!

From our dear friends "Hounds that Howl" and his "Cowgirl in the Sand" comes this note for undeterred rusties up in Norway:
Rusties and fellow Neil Young and Crazy Horse fans in Bergen Norway tonight are saying "Don't Be Denied". Neil Young songs will be in the air in Bergen on Saturday 10 August at 10 pm the Restaurant Madam Felle. Performing there will be the Neil Young cover band BULL YOUNG. The restaurant is located at Bryggen 47, 150 meters from the concert venue toward the center of town.

While Dinning Harborside at the Madam Felle Restaurant here we struck up a conversation with our waiter Jostein Torsvik. Turns out enterprising Norwegian Jostein not only is a part owner of Madam Felle. He is also a minority owner and employee of a music logistics company that erects the stages for rock concerts all over Scandinavia. Earlier today Jostein and his crew had just completed taking down the stage in Bergen after erecting it yesterday.

"It's unfortunate that it was cancelled," a disappointed Jostein told us. "Neil is popular in Bergen and we don't get to see him that often. He was here in 2008 and we were excited to have him back." Jostein's restaurant hired the cover band Bull Young in hopes of filling the void for the Rusties who are in Bergen this weekend. Thanks to him there is still a "Hurricane" warning for tomorrow night in this proud and beautiful Norwegian Port Town.

Bull Young Saturday Night 10 PM at Madam Felle

Hurricane Warning tomorrow in Bergen

Thanks "Hounds that Howl" and his "Cowgirl in the Sand"!

Don't Be Denied!

Neil Young and Crazy Horse Europe Tour Cancellation Reverberates

Poncho
Köln, Germany - July 12, 2013

(Click photo to enlarge)

Yesterday's news that Neil Young and Crazy Horse's remaining Europe tour dates are canceled hit the rusty world quite hard.

It was was no pleasure for us here at Thrashers Wheat to break the news just hours before the band was to hit the stage for the big Way Out West Festival in Göteborg, Sweden. Reaction here and here was swift, ranging from concern, anguish, to outright bitterness.

Of course, the main concern is that Poncho's injury is relatively minor and he makes a full recovery.

There were many cries of "The show must go on!".

Neil should have just played an acoustic set.

Crazy Horse should've played as a trio.

Since it was a festival, there must have been some guitarist around who could step in and replace Poncho.

And over and over again, my friends.

Really?

We completely understand everyone's disappointment. Especially those who had been standing on the rail at last night's Way Out West Festival for hours in anticipation. So sorry for all who were excited about seeing Crazy Horse. And for those that traveled long distances or had plans to, our heart goes out and hope there's a next ride on the Horse for you someday.

But -- and you know this is coming -- you can't put yourself in Neil's shoes and just say here's what I think is best. I know what's best for Neil. It doesn't work that way. Never has. Never will.

Down on pain street, disappointment lurks.

So how bout a little ▶ "Depression Blues to cheer everyone up? :)

Get well soon Poncho! We need you back to ride that crazy horse one more round.

TOUR DATES CANCELLED: Neil Young and Crazy Horse Europe Tour

Update: Reports indicate that Poncho has sustained a hand injury.

Report from Rolling Stone by Andy Greene is that Frank "Poncho" Sampedro broke his hand. "It's a mild fracture," a source close to the Young camp tells Rolling Stone. "He's expected to make a complete recovery in time for the North American tour."

Statement from Way Out West Festival, Göteborg, Sweden -- where Neil Young and Crazy Horse were scheduled to perform tonight:
We regret to inform you that a member of Crazy Horse today has been in an accident. Unfortunately, this means that Neil Young & Crazy Horse must cancel his gig tonight. Reiterates and regrets: Neil Young & Crazy Horse forced to cancel due the crash of one in the band. This affects the whole European tour.
This is the first we've heard "crash"? Possibly a translation thing?

From official NY Times:
TOUR DATES CANCELLED
August 8, 2013
For immediate release:
Due to an accident involving Crazy Horse, the remaining dates on the Neil Young and Crazy Horse tour of Europe and the British isles have been cancelled. We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes to our fans or the Festivals where we were scheduled to appear. As you must be, we too are disappointed at this unfortunate turn of events.
-- Neil Young and Crazy Horse
We're as stunned as everyone.

Here's hoping that the accident isn't too serious and the Horse will be able to ride again someday soon.

No word on remaining N. American dates.

Major bummer. :(

sorry folks

Next Release: Neil Young Live At Cellar Door 1970, 'Performance Archive Series'

The Cellar Door (original w/ hinges)
Winnipeg, Canada

via Joey Gregorash Collection
(Click photo to enlarge)

For some time now, we've been hearing rumors that the next Neil Young release will be Live At Cellar Door 1970 from the Performance Archive Series.

As we discussed last night on Thrasher's Wheat Radio on WBKM.org, a listing for the release has appeared and disappeared on Amazon listings over the last month with a vinyl version currently listed on Germany's Amazon - Cellar Door [Vinyl LP] as a pre-order.

According to Sugar Mountain - Neil Young Set Lists, there were 6 shows at The Cellar Door, Washington, D.C. on 30th November, 1, 2 Dec. 1970 with an early and late show each day.

From a Oct. 2009 interview with Guitar World magazine:
Guitar World: So how many Archives sets are we looking at?

Neil Young: Maybe four, maybe five. It depends on how much cutting and paring down we do, and how much we get into using BD-Live, which is a really remarkable thing. It's tremendous. It's remarkable because we really only saw that aspect of it for the first time six or seven months ago....One thing that we figured out is that we're going to be able to do progressive download updates. So for instance, around 1970 I played a show at the Cellar Door club in Washington, D.C. That show was taped, but we don't have enough great takes to release it as its own disk.

Instead, I'll probably make the songs available as downloadable updates to Archives. We'll drop them onto the timeline one at a time... One thing I'll tell you about the next volume of Archives is that Time Fades Away II is in there. And it's interesting because the whole thing has a different drummer than what was on that album. I switched drummers halfway through the tour- Kenny Buttrey was in there for the first half, and Johnny Barbata came in for the second. It's a completely different thing, with completely different songs. So that's interesting. There's lots of stuff like that that I'm working on right now for the second volume.

Track list for Live At Cellar Door 1970:

1. On The Way Home
2. Tell Me Why
3. Only Love Can Break Your Heart
4. Old Man
5. Down By The River
6. After The Gold Rush
7. Expecting To Fly
8. Flying On The Ground Is Wrong
9. Bad Fog Of Loneliness
10.See The Sky About To Rain

The release is tentatively set by Warner Reprise on September 6 2013.

Note that "See the Sky About to Rain" on Archives Vol. 1 Disc 6 is an edit of Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 shows.

From Steve Hoffman Forums:
All the 6 shows(30th November,1,2 Dec.1970) were recorded by Henry Lewy for a planned double album combined with the electric songs at the Fillmore East. The Cellar Door were 8-track recordings. It's likely that some multitracks from these concerts still survive . Most of the original reels from these shows were shown at The Visit To The Archives(2000, Neil.Young.com). Some of the master logs are also listed in the Archives Book. The Neil Young Archives have all the 2 tracks from these shows. Sugar Mountain by Tom Hambleton takes his information from the Ghost on The Road(Pete Long), which sources are provided by Joel Bernstein. Neil promised the release of this record in Waging Heavy Peace, so this is really a great news.
Obviously, there's a lot going on with "The Cellar Door".

"The Cellar" was a Winnipeg club that Neil Young & The Squires once played.

The song "The Needle and the Damage Done" has the lyrics "knocking on my cellar door" line.

A very young Nils Lofgren talked his way backstage and introduced himself to Neil Young at Cellar Door club in Washington, D.C.

More interestingly, cellar door is a combination of words in the English language once characterized by J. R. R. Tolkien to have an especially beautiful sound. In his 1955 essay "English and Welsh", commenting on his affection towards the Welsh language, Tolkien wrote:
"Most English-speaking people...will admit that cellar door is 'beautiful', especially if dissociated from its sense (and from its spelling). More beautiful than, say, sky, and far more beautiful than beautiful. Well then, in Welsh for me cellar doors are extraordinarily frequent, and moving to the higher dimension, the words in which there is pleasure in the contemplation of the association of form and sense are abundant."
Tolkien's discourse is the most likely origin of this concept and the only documented one. Nonetheless, this phrase has been subject to a legendary degree of misattribution. In common circulation, this pronouncement is commonly attributed to "a famous linguist". [1] It has also been mistakenly attributed to Edgar Allan Poe, Dorothy Parker[2], and Robert Frost although no such texts have surfaced. The most detailed account alludes to a survey, possibly conducted around the 1940s, probing the word in the English language generally thought to be the most beautiful. Contributing to this survey, American writer H. L. Mencken supposedly claimed that a Chinese student, who knew little or no English, especially liked the phrase cellar door — not for what it meant, but rather for how it sounded. Some accounts describe the immigrant as Italian rather than Chinese. Another account suggests that it is a mispronunciation of the French words C'est de l'or, which can be translated as "It is gold".

Tolkien also once used the phrase to illustrate a point about his writing process during an interview:

"Supposing you say some quite ordinary words to me - 'cellar door', say. From that, I might think of a name, 'Cellardoor', and from that a character, a situation begins to grow."[3]
I caught ya knockin' at my cellar door...

Concert Review of the Moment: Neil Young & The Kids in Europe, Summer 2013

Kristine, "The Loner" & Rafael
Lucca Festival, Italy: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - July 25, 2013
(Click photo to enlarge)

The Concert Review of the Moment is about seeing Neil Young & Crazy Horse this summer in Europe with the kids. Here's the experience in Lucca and Rome with two nine years old by The Loner:
Neil Young and Crazy Horse!

My family had enjoyed our summer holiday in Italy, planned when we knew that Neil Young and Crazy Horse were going to play concerts in Lucca and Rome. My two nine year old children were attending their first Neil Young concert in Lucca. Finally the day arrived - with an aching shoulder. The painful shoulder is probably due to tense driving with manual transmission in Italian cities and made shifting very painful. A few painkillers and adrenaline caused that I could add sixty kilometers behind the wheel towards the fine city of Lucca in Italy. We arrived a piazza, giving a lovely frame for the concert.

A nice person in the audience had my kids alternately on his shoulders, something people around us only thought was cozy. Thanks to those people! Already from the first notes of Love and Only Love came lump in the throat, and the good feeling lasted throughout the concert. I finally got to experience Walk Like A Giant and Ramada Inn from last year's album – what versions! Time and place are insignificant when Neil and horses go to the peripheries of the world with their instruments. Adding that Neils voice was in very good shape and that the acoustic songs like Red Sun sounded perfect.

I've been on so many Young concerts that I will complain about songs that are not played, but enjoying myself with those who come. Some of the most obvious crowd favorite did not come. Like a Hurricane I did not expect, as this supposedly got an incredible version of thunderstorms two days earlier. The concert ended a quarter past midnight and we were all very tired when it was over.

The concert the next day in Rome was about as strong. After running 3000 kilometers by car, visited Siena once again, delivering the car and arrived hotel, I should now see Neil Young and Crazy Horse without my kids. The crowd here was much younger than in Lucca, but they hung on to both old and new material. Ramada Inn seemed even better than the night before and people were singing along to Blowin ' In the Wind (the acoustic version), Heart of Gold and Rockin' In The Free World. I particularly enjoyed a superb Sedan Delivery - none of my favorites otherwise - and Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze. But Lucca meant something special to me. For those who have tickets in Norway, only to rejoice! Will my children come along? If Neil promises to play Hey Hey, My My. My son wants so bad to be like the woman in the video from Weld.

-The Loner
Oslo, Norway
Thanks The Loner! What a great father. Lucky kids. Enjoy the concert in Norway!
