The Spirit of Neil in Paris: A Neil Young Concert Story

Neil Young Fans - In The Line

So while out on the road this summer following the Neil Young and Crazy Horse Europe Concert Tour, we came across quite a range of Neil Young fans from around the world.

And we heard lots of Neil stories.

But here's a Neil story that really stuck with us and gives us lots of hope.

Here's the scene. Paris in the hours and minutes leading up to the night's Neil Young and Crazy Horse concert. We were hanging out on the floor of the venue, sitting amongst a big mix of Neil fans from around the city, country and world. Young & old and everything in between.

We found ourselves sitting amongst a group of young-ish fans in their teens and early 20's. We tried to strike up a conversation but none of the group spoke English. We tried to make a little small talk with what language we had in common to pass the time. Eventually a mutual friend joined the group and we asked them to translate for us.

"Is this your 1st Neil concert?" Yes, they all nodded.

"Have you heard the latest Neil CD?" No, they all nodded.

"Any favorite Neil Young songs?" No, they all shrugged.

"Anyone have any Neil music on your phones or iPods?" No, they all nodded.

Hmmm. "OK, so let us get this straight. You're not familiar with Neil's music, right? And his English lyrics aren't widely understood by your generation here in France?

So why are you here?"

Our new translator friend condenses the responses as so: "We are here because we've heard that Neil Young's music is important. And we have come tonight to find out why."

A Neil Young concert can be a gathering of the vibes. Those who get Neil. Those who see the vista and hear the muse. Those without fear in their minds and love in their hearts. Literally tears of joy to find the answer blowin' in the wind.

It Has Come to Our Attention That Some People...

Thrasher's Wheat Radio Supporters Go To Europe
for Neil Young & Crazy Horse Concert Tour

(Click photo to enlarge)

It has come to our attention that some people have been talkin' us down. They bring up our name, pass it 'round. They don't mention happy times. They do their thing, we'll do ours.

So, before we just walk on, we'll come back to that, and hit much more important matters right up front here.

First -- and foremost -- a sincere thanks to all who have supported Thrasher's Wheat Radio Goes To Europe for Neil Young & Crazy Horse journey! We couldn't have done that without all of our loyal, dear readers' and listener's generosity and confidence. Folks who welcomed us into their homes sight unseen. Folks who donated extra tickets for nothing more than a shirt and button.

The Magic Love of A Very Hot Night in Paris:
A Neil Young Story

The Europe adventure was a journey to the heart, mind and soul. Past, present and future with old and new friends.

As we went In Search of the Holy Rail, we discovered The Magic Love of A Very Hot Night in Paris. To say it was all momentous would be the understatement of a lifetime as the TWR crew hit 4 concerts in 3 countries in 5 days. Exhilarating and exhausting, we wouldn't buy, sell, borrow or trade for anything different.

Anything.

So back to something that has come to our attention that some people have been talkin' Thrasher's Wheat down.

Rusties in Amsterdam
with WBKM.org crew Eric & Tony

(Click photo to enlarge)

Here's why this doesn't bring us down. In the interest of full disclosure let us attempt to clarify a misunderstanding. Our fundraising efforts were not so that we personally could wrangle a free trip to Europe for Neil & The Horse. No. Our fundraising efforts are an attempt to re-coup the expenses of our non-profit partner WBKM.org. Just to be totally clear, the Thrasher's Wheat website paid all expenses for the radio team from Burlington, Vermont -- airfare, hotels, food, beverage, and tickets. It adds up, let us tell you.

Rusties Jam in Amsterdam

And the t-shirts and buttons are being used to defray these expenses. Please remember none of this money is going to us (thrasher & thrashette) - we are providing European coverage at no charge whatsoever to you -- our faithful readers and loyal fellow Neil fans -- and will continue to do so without any payment. Both Thrasher's Wheat Radio and WBKM.org are non-profit-making entities in the sense that every penny received is plowed back to produce t-shirts, buttons and sponsorships until costs are recovered. Now, let us be honest and tell you here that it'll take a whole lotta shirts getting moved for us ever be made whole on all of this. But that's OK as we continue to see the vista and hear the muse while providing high quality wheat news that our readers demand from this mostly chaff free blog.

So if you hear some people talkin' us down, please let them know where our hearts are and that we're watching out for the greedy hand, greedy hand. Then, just walk on.

Thanks to all who made this happen! Especially folks like Geoff, for logo design. Dee & Tim, for button production. Donna & Terri for all of the love & support in Paris. HarryO, organizer extraordinaire. Roel, Mr. "Live music is better". Marilyn, Neil singer with songs. Henrik, for the warmth and hosting generosity in Berlin. Alexander, and the Berlin pre-fest. Rainer, for hosting the Berlin club gig. Scott & Lou, for their initial enthusiasm and project support.

And big thanks to all those Rusties like Cathy & Ron, Tyler - our man on a rail, Nan, Kurt - our Travel Angel, Jacqueline - of iced towel fame, Uwe - AR Girls sign man, Neil, Olaf, Andrea, Denis, Paul D., Vincent & Dad, Graeme, Cor, Nick K., Erik D., Albert S., Johnny "Song Dog", and all the other rusties around the world!

And of course the TWR crewmates: Eric, Tony, & Howell.

And the Crazy Horse Personnel: Neil, Billy, Ralph, & Poncho:
"Crazy Horse personnel would like to wish you all a big thank you tonight.

We hope you travel safely when you leave this building. We hope to see you somewhere the next time. We know some of you have children, and we hope they’re home sleeping soundly without a worry in the world, ready to have a good time tomorrow. And we do know we’re lucky to be here with you. The next time we meet we may not all be here so let’s thank each other for being here tonight.

From all Crazy Horse personnel, our entire crew, we want to remind you; don’t leave anything behind because tomorrow someone else will be here."

Comment of the Moment: London Gig of Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Neil Young
Photo via Uncut.co.uk
(Click photo to enlarge)

Given the debacle in Dublin -- where everything that could go wrong did -- it's nice to see the tour leg ending in London last night proved a worthy redemption.

As we discussed in coverage of Neil Young & Crazy Horse Dublin, it seems like the odds were not in favor of a successful evening with the poor weather, poor sound, poor horse track venue, lack of stage props, an early curfew shutting down the Cortez encore, among other factors, took its toll on a poor audience heavy with drunken talkers.

But if you're down on a frown, check out this letter a messenger brought me on London: Neil Young & Crazy Horse Concert Reviews - June 17, 2013 by Unknown:
This was the greatest gig I have have ever had the pleasure to experience, bar none.

Despite Neil's claims to the contrary, the band treated us to an extraordinary mind blowing performance. There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe just how magnificent Neil and the Horse were tonight. The sound acoustics and staging were superb throughout and the set list perfect. Particular highlights were the epic Ramada Inn, a sublime reading of Blowin' In The Wind, the poignant Red Sun, the powerhouse Hey, Hey and the crowd pleasing garage of F@@kin' Up. I never thought it was possible to reach such a transcendental high at a gig.

This was a full two and half hours of brilliance from masters of their craft. Roll on the next one in London in August.
Thanks Unknown!

The "Geffen-Like" Reactions to Dublin Concert of Neil Young & Crazy Horse

UPDATE: The reaction to the reaction of of Neil Young & Crazy Horse in Dublin has become news itself across Ireland: Neil Young and great expectations | On The Record.

RDS Arena, Dublin, Ireland - June 15

The "Geffen-Like" reactions to last night's Dublin concert of Neil Young & Crazy Horse have been both bewildering and hilarious.

Neil Young -- once again -- accused of not making Neil Young-like music. How is this possible? Definitely a case of "Why do I keep fuckin' up" without a clue.

As documented on our Twitter live blog filter yesterday, reactions to Dublin were all over the map. From joyfully positive to outraged anger.

Even the mainstream press exhibited the typical "we get it cause we're hip, but we won't give it a positive review" with smug know-it-all arrogance.

From Neil Young and Crazy Horse trot off with a whimper - Music News | Gigs, Album Reviews & More | The Irish Times - Sun, Jun 16, 2013 by Kevin Courtney:
What was that wafting through the air at the RDS Arena last night? It was the smell of disappointment, as 18,000 Neil Young fans came to the slow and painful realisation that the man in black on stage was there only to please himself and not the modest attendance at the 30,000 capacity venue.

Neil Young can be stubbornly self-indulgent at the best of times, yet fans still held out hope that he might dust off a few of his best-known tunes on this tour, with his long-standing band, Crazy Horse.

Confoundedly, Courtney follows this negativism with back-handed, begrudging praise without the least bit of self awareness of the flawed logic and irony therein. sigh. Courtney writes:
Soon it was back to the long jam-outs on Ramada Inn, from the new album, and the very pedestrian Fuckin’ Up. In fairness, Young is a cracking lead guitarist, and he has a telepathic rapport with his Crazy Horse bandmates. You won’t hear better jamming this side of a Grateful Dead tour. But at this stage everybody was feeling the guitar solo fatigue, and by the time Young tossed the crowd a sweet treat in the form of Cinnamon Girl, it was too late. The chance to bond with one of rock’s towering heroes was lost.
For many, The Grateful Dead once represented the ultimate concert experience. To have one's jams compared favorably to The Grateful Dead's long, jazzy, trippy jams is the supreme compliment. Furthermore, anyone notice the title of Neil Young & Crazy Horse's latest album? "Psychedelic Pill". Try maybe playing the album before attending your next Neil concert, maybe? That way, when Neil and The Horse hit stride with long, jazzy, improvised, trippy jams, they won't be surprised and shocked.

Of course -- as we've been thru a thousand times before on the subject of The Unbearable Lightness of Being Neil Young -- the more self-indulgent Neil is, the better. This is where the 15-20 minute "Walk Like Giant", "Cortez The Killer" or "Like a Hurricane" come from. This is what real fans want. Extended jams and experimentally challenging fare.

We've talked about before about how a Neil Young concert is almost like being part of performance artist workshop (see Expecting to See Neil Young) or how to handle the disconnect of false expectations (see The Agony & The Ecstasy: Neil Young in Concert) or whether Neil fans can ever let go of their biases and prejudices (see A Battle Raged on the Open Page: Can You Change Your Mind?).

As we commented along the way, the extreme range of reaction indicates that it was a perfect Neil Young concert. With both acoustic & electric, quiet & soft, new & old songs, that's what Neil's concerts have practically always been. A little something for everyone, if you will. Again, a near perfect setlist and not some random grab bag.

Anyone remember back in 1982 Neil & The Shocking Pinks and the Doo-Wop sets? Talk about outraged audiences. We still clearly remember some dude bellowing "Southern Man" at the top of their lungs during all of the Pinks' rockabilly tunes.

So how can one man perform a concert and folks come away with such diametrically opposed opinions? That is the mystery & beauty of Neil.

Lastly, one of the near universal complaints from the doubters is the extended feedback endings. Not everyone's cup of tea, for sure. And we can understand how this doesn't translate well in a large auditorium when you're sitting far from the stage. But if you're right up close to the stage and watching the sonic techniques used to emit the squeals, peels, distortions and feedback, than you can understand the artistry.

For us, this is the pinnacle moment of the Alchemy tour -- the "Walk Like Giant" finale meltdown.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
2012 Alchemy tour, Philadelphia, 11/29/12

Neil in all of his whacked out grunged, ragged glory.

Like we said, the extended feedback endings are not everyone's cup of tea. But enough of what we think. What do you think? More or less feedback?

Stand & Be Counted!

As for us? We just ask the question ‘Are You Passionate?’? If not, fine. walk on.

UPDATE: The reaction to the reaction of of Neil Young & Crazy Horse in Dublin has become news itself across Ireland: Neil Young and great expectations | On The Record.

Is Neil Young's hi-res music service PONO still a viable technology?

Based on yesterday's developments, it would appear the answer is "Yes".

From EXCLUSIVE: Neil Young visits Meridian – Pono hi-res music link-up imminent? | whathifi.com by Andrew Everard:
Young, who had performed the previous night at the Birmingham LG Arena, arrived at Meridian's Cambridgeshire HQ with his entourage in two tour buses, and as well as the meeting with Stuart, had a variety of demonstrations of Meridian systems, including a session in the Meridian Digital Theatre, a visit to the company's new Experience Centre, and a ride in a Meridian-equipped Range Rover Vogue.

The Comment of the Moment is from Birmingham: Neil Young & Crazy Horse Concert Reviews - June 11, 2013 by Jevon who said...
Absolutely astounding!

If you're lucky enough to see work by Hockney or Tarantino, you wouldn't tell them how to paint or shoot movies, would you? Sometimes you just have to roll up, watch a master at work and thank your lucky stars you've been invited.

The gig was Neil in all his Ragged Glory. Grunge? Check. Rock n Roll? Check. Feedback? Check. Wilful determination to test his audience? Check. One of the greatest of modern day musicians on top form? Check, check and double check... with an egg on top.

Fuckin Up, Love to Burn, Cortez, Cinnamon Girl, Powderfinger, Heart of Gold, My My Hey Hey, Walk Like a Giant... and so much more.

Simply awesome. Late sixties and still so much to give, so much brio, so much spirit.

The fire was in his eyes at the end. You could tell it had been a great gig.

One word of warning - if you have only 'Harvest' in your cd collection and want to tick off a Neil Young gig then you may be in for an ear-bleeding surprise.
But just go... go and wonder at the genius.

Enjoy Glasgow. I'm envious.
Thanks Jevon ! Good to hear you enjoyed the concert. Thanks for sharing.
