Given the debacle in Dublin -- where everything that could go wrong did -- it's nice to see the tour leg ending in London last night proved a worthy redemption.
As we discussed in coverage of Neil Young & Crazy Horse Dublin, it seems like the odds were not in favor of a successful evening with the poor weather, poor sound, poor horse track venue, lack of stage props, an early curfew shutting down the Cortez encore, among other factors, took its toll on a poor audience heavy with drunken talkers.
But if you're down on a frown, check out this letter a messenger brought me on London: Neil Young & Crazy Horse Concert Reviews - June 17, 2013 by Unknown:
This was the greatest gig I have have ever had the pleasure to experience, bar none. Thanks Unknown!
Despite Neil's claims to the contrary, the band treated us to an extraordinary mind blowing performance. There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe just how magnificent Neil and the Horse were tonight. The sound acoustics and staging were superb throughout and the set list perfect. Particular highlights were the epic Ramada Inn, a sublime reading of Blowin' In The Wind, the poignant Red Sun, the powerhouse Hey, Hey and the crowd pleasing garage of F@@kin' Up. I never thought it was possible to reach such a transcendental high at a gig.
This was a full two and half hours of brilliance from masters of their craft. Roll on the next one in London in August.

I doubt there was any real thought or feeling behind Neil's "at times it kind of sucked" comment, as it's just part of his standard pre-Roll Another Number speech.....still, a very strange comment to make after such a strong performance!
That was the best Neil gig I've seen (every UK visit since 2000)- a perfect combination of catchy little classics and stretched-out monsters. Pretty sure the "kinda sucked" comment was proof that the British don't have a monopoly on irony & dry humour.
Only had to ask the grown men chatting like schoolgirls in front of us once to let us hear Neil sing rather than them yakking, so that was OK. And the weather on the journey home was perfect!
Long Live The Horse.
I thought the LG Arena gig was good but boy they played a binder at the O2!! Best NY gig in my 25 yrs of seeing them. In fact, as has been said the BEST gig I've ever been too.
Passion and awesome power combined and lucky enough to be 10 feet from the stage. Wow! Just playing the set list through now. Still on a high.
Got rock and roll,
got country music playin'
If you hate us, you just
don't know what you're sayin'.
I'm loving the anti-NY+CH backlash, these people haven't got a clue. The three gigs I saw were all time gigging highlights for me. Can't wait for Liverpool in August.
My first thought after the concert was it was technically the worst I'd seen Neil & the Horse play -- they were more tight in Berlin -- and that it was the best concert I've ever seen.
The funniest reviews are the ones where the guy trashes it without realizing he loved it but doesn't know why. "The concert was crap... and it was the best guitar jamming since the Grateful Dead, but it was just crap."
I thought they played a couple of songs a bit slow, but I'm no musician, and they worked fine. Neil definitely screwed up the solo on Mr Soul, and seemed to want to take a second shot at it and screwed that up too, then went running around the stage for a while to let out his frustration a bit while Frank had a bit of a chuckle.
Afterwards he said something like "We sucked tonight at times, but that can happen if you try to do what we're trying to. We just want you to know that we think you deserve the best."
I was really happy he did Red Sun.
