BREAKING: New Crazy Horse & Neil Young Video Streaming NOW!!!

UPDATE #5:
"Horse Back"
Engineered and mixed by John Hanlon at Audio Casa Blanca Jan 6, 2012, assisted by Mark Humphreys and John Hausman
Video by Ben Johnson
Music by Crazy Horse

UPDATE #4: Obviously -- or maybe not -- this isn't a stream of a new album. Post title updated.

UPDATE #3: Footage includes lyric sheets for "Gallows Pole", "Clementine", "This Land", "Oh Susanna".

UPDATE #2:Twitter / @rdvdijk: @ThrashersWheat : " not an album.. two jams of old songs (Fuckin' Up and Cortez The Killer). VERY COOL!"

UPDATE: This appears to be some sort of preview / "ARC-like" collage of sonic snippets and studio footage.

Possibly Toast, (an unreleased Crazy Horse Album)???

Toast, named after a defunct recording studio, "Toast" is "perhaps one of the most under-estimated and deceptive Crazy Horse records of all time, with many songs originally discarded, and then re-recorded with Booker T. and the MGs."

The 37 minute Neil Young and Crazy Horse jam preview also includes a mashup-alternative "Cortez" take with wonderful, loving closeups of various sorts of vintage audio gear.

This video footage is definitely for the rusty audio tech geeks out there. ;)

New Crazy Horse & Neil Young album video is now streaming on Official Neil Young page.

Comment of the Moment: Occupy Audio: Neil Young is "Angered By Today's Sound Quality"

Neil Young

Photo by 1059sunnyfm.radio.com

Here's the Comment of the Moment from the recent post on Occupy Audio: Neil Young is "Angered By Today's Sound Quality" by Kimball:
Somehow, something about this issue is hitting me off center.

Sound quality is 2nd place for me, right behind Musical quality, or the spook factor, which is where the music magically connects with something inside me. I can still connect with music if the sound quality isn't there, but it can be more difficult, to impossible depending on what the music is playing on.

On the other hand I've connected with music on my laptop speakers only to find that its not the same when I put the CD or better on my full up stereo. Can't exactly explain all the factors at play, but I know I have a much fuller experience when the medium and stereo equipment and mastering all get out of the way resulting in a beautiful musical experience.

For that stuff to get out of the way, it needs to be of high quality, full bandwidth, non-coloring and the mix and recording need to be as unaffecting and transparent as possible. I've done my part by putting my main 2 channel stereo system together. When I find recordings that fulfil their part (including performance and recording quality) all is well. Luckily most of the music that I enjoy these days has been recorded quite well.

That being all but the first Jack Johnson records, Mark Knopfler's newer solo stuff, John Mayer's Continuum [minus John always singing too close to the mic]. Black Keys' Brothers and even James Blunt's Back to Bedlam are pretty decent recordings. But I still get goosebumps EVERY TIME I hear that soundstage open up toward the end of Music is Love on my vinyl copy of Crosby's "If I could only remember my name". B-52's Party Mix is a beautiful sounding LP.

Anyway, what I was saying when I started this post, is that I don't think that the current problem of music quality is the fault of the record companies.

There is PLENTY of fault in the public's side of the equation. High Resolution DVD Audio and SACD have been around for what, about a decade. Most people just don't care enough about sound quality to seek out a high fidelity experience. I can't say I understand it because that's the opposite of what drives me, but I know most people are either unaware of what is possible or they don't care to take their connection with their music farther.

An example of this apathy of ignorance is how many people buy their low resolution music from apple's itunes store at 99 cents, with oodles of digital rights managements limitations and huge amounts of lost data from lossy digital compression. In my mind, apple itunes is the absolute WORST place to buy music. The customer gets the least amount of product for the most amount of money and they don't even own the product enough to be able to move it around to all their players. Its basically the equivalent of going to radio shack to buy electronics. Or going to bose for your stereo speakers. Or getting your supper at McDonalds. Its all one big tornado of ignorance, convenience and an under-informed public.

As an engineering type, I'm not averse to seeking out lots of information before making decisions. I recognize that my mindset is different from most other people's, and I can accept that they're interests and values aren't going to match mine.

But it boggles my mind to understand what is different with this american population today from what it was in the 60's and 70's when people cared about the sound of their music and actually owned hi fi stereos.

The real question in this discussion is what is different about the public between then and now. For some reason people aren't pursuing sound quality as a component of their connection with music. There is alot of good music out there now, I've been feeling for the last couple three years that we're entering into or are in a high point in great music, kind of like the late 60's and 70's. You just have to look further than your local hot hits FM radio stations with those damned screaming car dealership commercials.

But when it comes to Neil's mission here, I hope that he is able to wake some of the masses up SO THAT THEY can demand more high resolution audio. If people demand it by buying it with their dollars the rec. co's will happily deliver to make the sales. DVD Audio and SACD have been available for a long time, they actually used to have a pretty good selection of them in most Best Buys, but because people didn't buy them, they dedicated the floor space to something else. Best Buy is foraying into vinyl but when they only have 10-15 different titles, how can they expect to make anything more than novelty sales.

Anyways, that's the way I see this issue and I hope that if I touched a nerve with anyone by slaying your sacred cow above (mcdonalds, bose etc) that you take a deep look at why you've settled for such meager crap. Life is too short to settle for low grade mass consumer trash. Seek knowledge and live a fuller life with the quality products and services that ARE available out there. Create the demand for the good stuff and we'll be rewarded with more good options.

Thanks Kimball! Lots to consider hear here...

Neil Young is not happy about today's sound quality.

So Neil has posted on his Facebook page that he stands in solidarity with the Occupy Audio movement:
OCCUPY AUDIO Rescuing an Art Form!

Occupy Audio and get the sound back to the people.

Musicians hear this. This is the 21st Century. We need to take our tones back. Give your fans what YOU hear. Figure out a way to do it. MP3 audio is the new radio. It should be free like radio. Our record companies need to deliver what we are making the way we hear it. Put pressure on them. Our music loving listeners deserve the best. Sell quality. It is possible. We can do it. Now is the time. Don’t be a slave to the Media corporations. Change what they are doing. Give your audience what YOU hear. Let them FEEL it.

GIVE YOUR FANS A CHOICE.

Thanks for listening.

From Neil Young Angered By 'Sound Of Music Today' - Music, Celebrity, Artist News | MTV by Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz:
Neil Young, who spoke with MTV News in Park City (where he's promoting the Slamdance release of his new Jonathan Demme-helmed documentary "Neil Young Journeys") and expressed his concerns over the current state of "the sound of music."

"I'm finding that I have a little bit of trouble with the quality of the sound of music today," Young said. "I don't like it. It just makes me angry. Not the quality of the music, but we're in the 21st century and we have the worst sound that we've ever had. It's worse than a 78 [rpm record]. Where are our geniuses? What happened?" Young argued that MP3s feature only 5 percent of the data from an original master file, which he sees as a major problem.

"If you're an artist and you created something and you knew the master was 100 percent great, but the consumer got 5 percent, would you be feeling good?" he asked. "I like to point that out to artists. That's why people listen to music differently today. It's all about the bottom and the beat driving everything, and that's because in the resolution of the music, there's nothing else you can really hear. The warmth and the depth at the high end is gone."

A brief video clip on Occupy Audio's Facebook page demonstrates High Resolution Audio in a Cadillac Eldorado. David Crosby says, "That's the best sound I ever heard in a car ever in my life, and as a matter of fact, it might be some of the best sound I ever heard."

News of New Crazy Horse Album Gallops Around the World

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
1997

The news that Neil Young is making a new album with Crazy Horse has both surprised and delighted fans around the world.

In our exclusive scoop last night from the Slamdance Festival, we relayed a report that has been picked on dozens and dozens of blogs, fansites, and mainstream media, including Rolling Stone Magazine.

From Neil Young Recording New Album With Crazy Horse | Music News | Rolling Stone by Andy Greene:
Neil Young is recording a new album with Crazy Horse, according to a post on Young's fansite Thrasher's Wheat – and now confirmed by Rolling Stone: "It's looking good," a representative for Young says. According to the fansite report, Young shared the news over the weekend at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, at an event with Jonathan Demme to promote their new movie Journeys. The audience "erupted in applause" when Young said that he was working with Crazy Horse again.

Multiple fans subsequently posted on Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina's Facebook wall to ask if the news was true.

His response: "Yes!"

According to the report on Thrasher's Wheat, Young said that he's already recorded one album with Crazy Horse and another is in the works.

The news was naturally hailed on the Rust group, on Facebook | ThrashersWheatNeverSleeps with 100's of likes and comments, and our Twitter feed exploded.

But it gets even crazier.

Rumors are now flying that Neil Young & Crazy Horse will headline Bonnaroo 2012, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Lollapalooza.

The Pearl Jam - Ten Club Community, Widespread Panic forum, Radiohead message board and numerous other fan pages picked up the news and cheered.

Speculation is rampant on the news over on Steve Hoffman Audiophile Forum.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
"Don't Spook The Horse"

So what do we think of all of this?

As the Lone Red Rider points out there are possibly 5 -- and maybe more -- albums ready to go from the Archives Team (Toast, Odeon-Budokan, Homegrown, Chrome Dreams, Oceanside-Countryside).

Could the completed CD be Toast?

So will 2012 be another The Year of The Horse??!! Imagine a monumentally, definitive Crazy Horse tour like we saw in 1996?

Of course, we'd all be happy with the CH 2nd sets we got in 2003/4 on the Greendale tour. Here's a sample.

REPORT: New Crazy Horse Album Recorded

Crazy Horse

MusiCares Honors Neil Young - Los Angeles, CA - 1/29/10
Photo by Joni Milken-Noah

UPDATE: This TW exclusive has been re-confirmed by Archives Guy as essentially accurate. Possible Spring release...
~~~
This weekend, the Master Class at Slamdance Festival featured Coffee w/ Neil Young & Jonathan Demme for their new film Journeys.
A report from the coffee with Neil and Jonathan event by Bob & Kim C. reveals a stunning announcement...
... Neil Young has been recording with Crazy Horse . One album is complete and they are working on another.
No mention of content or time table.
Neil did talk about a group of Americana songs that he had recorded as well with a youth choir...and the Horse. When he spoke of recording with Crazy Horse again "the crowd erupted in applause".
Also, Bob & Kim C. report that:
  • Neil mentioned that a 4th film with Demme would make the effort a "4 wheel drive not a 3 wheel drive".
  • Neil has been writing songs recently and happy with the effort.
  • No mention of Buffalo Springfield.
  • Wants to finish his Lincvolt movie....after 5 years of work.
So will 2012 be another The Year of The Horse??!!
Or just some old TOAST?
In other Slamdance news from Neil Young journeys to Utah with new concert film - MSN Movies News:
PARK CITY, Utah (AP) -- Neil Young recalls how his first concert film with director Jonathan Demme was a lush, stately tribute to country music.
He says their latest, "Neil Young Journeys," is more like an electric bolt, with a "grinding, blinding beauty to it."
"'Journeys' is so different from `Heart of Gold.' It's like the other side of the universe," Young, 66, said in an interview alongside Demme. "'Heart of Gold' was a massive production with great caretaking to present this whole image of this forgotten style of presenting music, in this great old chapel of country music. ...
"This film we just made is so opposite of that. It's just one person. The sound is completely different and the attitude of it is different. The look is different. ... The sounds are kind of enveloping. You get to move way inside, whereas, `Heart of Gold,' you're way back, going, `Oh, it's beautiful seeing it from the back, seeing all these beautiful people, these great musicians.' And this one here, you're like inside my instrument, inside the distortion of the guitar. There's nothing in the way."
"It's more distorted and funky. It's a little bit more in your face," Young said. "It's like zooming in on something, losing everything that's usually around it, and you're just losing everything else. There's no bass, no drums, there's no other guitars, there's no other voices, there's no synthesizers, there's no echo. There's just this thing. It's a big sound, because you're right up on it.
It's like a fantastic voyage into your guitars."
"This whole world of cars and music, that's a big chunk of Neil's DNA. He's all about cars and driving and music in motion," Demme said. "I don't think we had any discussions. It was just like, well, we're going to Canada to shoot the concert in Toronto. Obviously, we'll drive down there from Omemee and take a look and see what's changed, and kind of just discover the past in the present. The same way the songs are very often kind of reflective. ...
"It put a lens up to his life. He's a medium for all of our lives. Certainly, our generation, whatever Neil's been singing about for the last 40 years or whatever, it's like, `Thank you. That's exactly what I was feeling. You've put it into words and music.'"
LincVolt Burned Yet Again - This Time by Insurance Lawyers
Neil Young testing LincVolt - 2008
Photo by Brant Ward / The Chronicle
LincVolt is being burned yet again. This time its by a lawsuit being filed by insurance lawyers related to the disastrous warehouse fire in 2010.
From Neil Young's company sued over Peninsula warehouse fire sparked by hybrid car - San Jose Mercury News by Joshua Melvin:
The company founded by rocker Neil Young to convert his one-of-a-kind LincVolt hybrid electric car is being sued for nearly $500,000 after the vehicle sparked a fire that seriously damaged two San Carlos warehouses in 2010, according to a lawsuit.
The suit, filed Tuesday by Unigard Insurance Co., says LincVolt LLC, which lists Young as an officer, was negligent when it converted the 1959 Lincoln Continental to run on electricity and a biodiesel-powered generator.
"The altering of a gas-powered 1959 vehicle and its components is an extreme departure from what a reasonably careful person would do," Unigard Insurance Co. claims in the suit filed in San Mateo County Superior Court.
"what a reasonably careful person would do"?
We're sorry, but this is exactly what we need -- environmentally safer, alternative forms of transportation.
It's sad that the insurance firm is making its case on the opposite and indirectly discouraging much needed innovation.
Lincvolt is truly revolutionary.
Neil's LincVolt (which happens to be re-powering the American Dream) will be the world's first Series Hybrid Electric car with a generator fueled by cellulosic ethanol from biomass.
It is this attempt by Unigard Insurance Corporation to stifle innovation and discourage risk taking which is so disturbing. Clearly the fire was an accident and not the result of reckless negligence. Unigard Insurance Corporation is attempting to avoid covering an approved claim upon which its contractually obligated.
Most likely, this will turn into a PR disaster for Unigard when other policyholders see how they handle an "unforeseen accident" like this especially when their website encourages potential clients to take out additional insurance for special coverage like breakdown in equipment. (Thanks MNOTR).
The last time we saw someone truly regret filing a lawsuit against Neil Young, was when media mogul David Geffen sued Young in 1983 for $3 million for violating his contract by recording ‘unrepresentative’ albums. Ironically, the lawsuit accused Neil Young of not making Neil Young music, thus becoming the only artist in the history to be sued for not being them self.
Good luck Unigard. Hope you consulted Geffen first.
Or did you check with Jimmy McDonough on what its like to tangle in court with Neil?
Lincvolt long may you run!
You can't burn a dream down...
