Winner of Americana Covers Contest Announced: Profane Sass's "Wayfaring Stranger"
Profane Sass's "Wayfaring Stranger" has been announced as the winner of Neil Young's Americana covers contest.
From Talenthouse:
As luck and skill would have it, a medley of American and Canadian songsters by the name Profane Sass took it upon themselves to submit their gripping take on “Wayfaring Stranger” to the Invite, playing with such verve and spirit that Neil was moved to select that song as the bona fide Winner. We were fortunate to capture the band’s onscreen reaction upon being told that they’d gained Neil’s recognition in a big way. Having absorbed the good news, the members gathered themselves for a follow up interview. Read up on the story of each member finding their way into the band, how they keep their ecological footprint minimal, as well as the lengths they’re going to keep this association of musicians traveling strong.
Profane Sass: "Our advice to help all these struggling musicians out there would be to cut back on unnecessary expenses, dump any ego in the trash (and look for tasty food while you’re in there), don’t expect to get rich, love your art and play what you want and not what they want.
There is also a big difference between a hobby and a lifestyle, decide for yourself."

Congratulations Profane Sass!
Great version of Wayfaring Stranger!
Gutsy and the way I remember the song ...
Very cool version, I'm liking it very much. Sounds like Sixteen Horsepower and The Avett Brothers jamming in Ralph Stanley's barn. Congratulations to Profane Sass (very cool band name too)! I'll have to check you out more.

When the human race created the culture of speech and writing, it also produced the sublime culture called music. It is a language that goes beyond speech and letters--a living art that is almost mystical. This is where its emotional impact comes in.

Check out the blurb and humorous mention of Neil from Thurston Moore's new band Chelsea Light Moving:
"Start there. It’s not even music-– it’s an amphetamine sonnet for the on-the-loose lovers of the world. Chelsea Light Moving will play your town. Right now we’re playing Friday June 22 2012 at the Sled Island bizarro freak slam in Calgary, Alberta near where Neil Young used to skinny dip when he was a laser-brained teen."

I have a super crush on the Avetts, Mumfords, Edward Sharpe, Yim Yames, etc. Not a big fan of Kings of Leon. I can't tell you why. I don't know. Very gutsy bunch of heartfelt musicians. The way Neil and his band mates were when they were first starting out.
How about this song from Madison Violet (aka Mad Violet) doing "Come As You Are" (not the Nirvana tune)?! Beautiful harmonies and guitars with a total Neil feel, especially at the beginning...sounds a bit like Heart of Gold in double time. See them live whenever you can!

And I saw Kings of Leon back in the club days when they were being billed as "The Southern Strokes" and were opening for the band Jett (who had yet to have their big hit that ended up in about ten TV commercials). They were great back then and I predicted they'd hit the big time, but I also don't really follow them now that they have hit it big. Sometimes that stuff happens.
And while I'm at it, how about the news that Bob is playing grand piano (a Steinway?) on his current tour! Check the version of Love Sick from the tour opener a couple days ago...I think I can hear "The God Particle" somewhere in this!?

Sounds very cool...but I do really miss his guitar playing, not just acoustic but the great electric stuff he was playing back in the 90's. Rust never sleeps....
Mr. Henry, I really miss his Band. It was magic and fireworks when they played. They came up with some real doozies. Fun stuff. Just made you want to kick up your feet and sing along Avetts have some of that stuff I hear in Levon's songs which is why I love 'em like my own. I usually break out a little Bob and Band this time of year. Have a great day!
