Laura Marling on Neil Young & Crazy Horse's Americana
Laura Marling spoke with The Weekly Feed's Kyle Meredith while at Bonnaroo 2012.
In the interview Laura shares her thoughts on the new Neil Young & Crazy Horse album Americana.
For those who may wonder why we should care, for us, other musicians opinions often tend to be more insightful than your ordinary fan's. Such seems to be the case with Laura and Americana.

The "Americana" portion of this lasts 20 seconds - Marling is rather hesitant to say anything at first, then finally allows, "I like it, but it's very different - not at all what I expected." Not particularly insightful (or much of a ringing endorsement, really).
Little disappointing that she didn't really share her thoughts, other than she likes it.
I think she did with the silence just after the question
Yeah, her moment of silence is a 1000 word review unto itself.
I don't see any connection with NY & CH other then the fact that she's a fan which is somewhat trendy these day's among artists in general. Maybe she would have been less reserved if questioned about Joni or Emmylou.
She has opened for Neil, and covered "Needle" for a Jack White-produced single in 2010. From a Paste magazine interview that year:
Paste: Has there been a high point in your experiences over the past 3 or 4 years playing music?
Marling: I think recording this album was one of the best times I’ve ever had. I was just with people I was really comfortable with. I had recently become really comfortable with myself in my own skin. It was just such an easy process and it felt so much like what I love to do, and it made me realize how lucky I am to be doing it. So that was a real highlight. And then, also when we toured with Neil Young for a couple of days in Europe.
Paste: What was that like? Are you a big Neil Young fan?
Marling: Yes. It was crazy and terrifying. There was one interaction. He was really friendly, but he has been touring for forty years, so I assumed he wouldn’t want to be bothered. But my band all went up and talked to him, and then I got drunk and ... he was perfectly polite! He was lovely.
I think her standards are pretty high considering she is a balladeer. I don't think it's trendy to be a fan of Neil. A lot of Neil's fans never heard "Ambulance Blues" but a lot of indie artists love this guy seeking his best work out. They are instantly smitten for a lot of different reasons. If you have a good voice and can play at least 4 chords, you can probably make a few bucks singing his songs. I bet she has at least 5 of his songs on her playlist. Not because its trendy, because he has wriiten beautiful, timelless ballads.
Plus her album 'a creature I don't know' is absolutely brilliant; a cross between Joni mitchel's voice, Dylan-esque lyrics and a hint of nick drake in some of the ensemble playing. Really excellent LP.
Thos
Her voice is genuine, her songs are original, and she's tough as nails.
Her arrangements remind me of Fairport convention.... I listen to her onPandora radio and the line up is always reliable. I've been meaning to pick up her cd but can never find it when I'm shopping.
Fairport convention without
medieval thing going on.
Americana is an album that some Neil Young followers immediatly hear the sound and his melodies and great takes on tunes we all know instantly.Others hate it immediatly .However this genious has put out so many albums that you love or hate first pass and then years later say i love this or that .Time Fades away ,On the Beach and especially Tonights the night all had Neil Young fans split on there take on the albums .Moving on This notes for you ,Mirror Balletc etc etc.For me Americana is the best sounding NY&CH album since EKTIK
