Comment of the Moment: "Neil Young is like a lighthouse beam"

The Comment of the Moment is from the Joel Bernstein quote "Neil Young is like a lighthouse beam", one of the most perceptive and insightful observations we've come across in awhile.

And Joel would know.

From a comment by BIGCHIEF:
I suppose if anyone would know it would be Mr. Bernstein.

However, I believe that 'beam' is merely the aura that accompanies his presence wherever he is. Neil has a special gift and it's no small thing. Whenever he is on stage, not only does he have the attention of most of the audience, but other band members as well. All eyes on Neil. All of the reviews concerning the current Buffalo Springfield reunion is centered on Neil.

While not intending to belittle the other members, it's really the Neil Young and the Buffalo Springfield Show. When performing with C.S.& N, it's the Neil Young and C.S.& N Show. The audience response is overwhelmingly favorable towards Neil. The man can't help it.

Even when he consciously attempts to just be another band member and lay back, his aura is so vivid it's like he has a constant spotlight on him at all times. During this current tour, it seems that he is having the time of his life just by playing in a band again and sharing that spotlight with his brothers without any of the competition and drama that was so prevalent the last time around. Never the less, as humble and unselfish of a human being that Neil has evolved into over the years, there is no sign that the 'lighthouse beam' is even close to becoming dim.

The aura is only getting stronger as time goes by.

Thanks BIGCHIEF! Nice.

CONTEST: Help Out NYAS and Win an Archives BluRay Box Set

Broken Arrow Magazine
Published by Neil Young Appreciation Society

Want to help out the Neil Young Appreciation Society? Want to win a Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 Bluray 10 disc box set?

OK, here's how and why...

As you may recall, last week we ran a special deal on NYA for Thrasher's Wheat readers via PopMarket.com!. And -- for you cynics out there -- we here at TW got absolutely nothin' from the deal and only did it to give our fellow Neil fans another chance at getting in on the NYA action.

Well, much to PopMarket.com!'s pleasant surprise, TW readers apparently went shoppin' in the free world. As a token of PopMarket's appreciation, they have bestowed TW a full Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 Bluray 10 disc box set, which lists for $349.99.

So now what are we going to do with another NYA boxset here at TW? Have his & hers/thrasher & thrashette editions of NYA? Build an addition to TW HQ?

After some discussion with our oh-so lovely and dear thrashette we decided that we would give back to the Neil community via NYAS and Broken Arrow Magazine.

In the last issue of Broken Arrow Magazine: May 2011, in the final article 'Last Dance', NYAS editor Scott Sandie and esteemed colleague (and pint consuming connoisseur) Guy Haslam issued a call for submissions to Broken Arrow from all Society membership.

So have a look at this article list below and use it as a prompt. Why not write that article that you’ve always thought about, either on one of these topics or anything else that you have in mind? Set yourself a target to write one, or at least have a go. At worst it won’t be published. At best you’ll see yourself in print in your own magazine. And earn a NYA boxset, to boot.

Drop editor Scott "Surfer Joe" Sandie an e-mail (surfer-joe@nyas.org.uk) to talk about it and make a proposal. They’re open to almost anything.

Act now. Seize the day. Your society needs you!

Possible article topics:
  • The Bridge School Benefit – where to now?
  • The Archives – Too little too late?
  • The Trunk Show – where is it filed?
  • Toast – have we been burned?
  • LincVolt. Is Neil aware that the major motor manufacturers have their own versions?
  • Neil Young – The Covers. A definitive listing and discussion of other people’s songs that Neil has covered. 1) on record, 2) live.
  • Top 10 Hits (Er, Heart of Gold?!?)
  • Crazy Horse – Too good to die?
  • Where are they now? (Eg Niko Bolas, Susan Young, etc).
  • NY Books out there – a broad overview.
  • The BSB – Tales from the Road.
  • Neil Young – His best song ever?
  • My Top 10. Compare/contrast Top 10 Neil and Top 10 all others?
  • Six Degrees of Separation: ????? to Neil Young.
  • My Collection – a collector reminisces.
  • A Life of Neil (it’s a good title, anyway!)
  • The Guit-jo – A brief history and link to its use by NY.
  • Most valuable Music Posters. A top 10/20 with description and values.
  • Play ‘Em Like Neil (an old series we ran).
  • Neil Young: My Part In His Downfall. (Another great title looking for an article).
  • Neil Young: Cameo Film Appearances.
  • Neil Young: Guest appearances on other people’s albums?
  • Roots & Shoots: Neil Young’s references to other artists?
  • The Rockets – Where Are They now? (sub-title: A Countdown to Failure).
  • The Godfather of Grunge, or More of a Punk? Neil Young, Devo and Johnny Rotten.
  • Native American Imagery in Neil Young songs.
  • Neil Young – The Dogs (woof woof).
  • “Old Kong” and “The White Falcon”.
  • A re-appearance by these legendary commentators?
  • Meet the Member – tell us a bit about yourself.
  • Literary references: Neil Young mentioned in books.
  • “Old” (or any other word) in Neil Young songs. A list?
  • The Day I met Neil....
  • Neil Young For Banjo. How to play, say, Old King?
  • Rust Down Under: Neil in Oz? (or any other country)
We're sure you can think of many others.

deadline for article submissions has been extended indefinitely. So you have plenty of time to do your Neil research, polish it up, and send it in.

"Neil Young is like a lighthouse beam": Joel Bernstein

Neil Young - The Boarding House, San Francisco, May 1978

In one the best quotes ever to summarize and capture the spirit of Neil Young, Joel Bernstein -- Young's longtime associate and archivist -- tells the Wall St. Journal:
"Neil is like a lighthouse beam. He has an incredibly intense focus in a very narrow area to the exclusion of all else."

Bernstein and music photographer Henry Diltz are exhibiting limited edition prints at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in NYC, NY.

Joel Bernstein’s many album covers are commonly listed among the most influential in rock's visual history. His first, at age 18, was Neil’s After the Gold Rush, often cited in Best Album Covers Of All Time lists. As a close friend of Neil’s since then, he has captured some of his most beautiful and intimate moments.

Clarence Clemons Tribute by Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen via Bob Dylan

We lost the Big Man this weekend.

Clarence Clemons, Bruce Springsteen's saxophone player -- and the heart and soul of The E St. Band -- went to the great gig in the sky and will be sadly missed by all who witnessed his giant humanitarian musicalness.

We were fortunate to see Clarence and Bruce play together before Clarence's hometown family in Norfolk, VA on the Born to Run tour in 1978. Magic, love and pandemonium come to mind of the memories as they waded deep into the crowd together to jam with their adoringly proud Clemons family.

Here's Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen on Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" Tribute by Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen from the Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, MN during the Vote for Change concerts in October 2004.

Watch Neil and Bruce pay tribute to Clarence starting about 3:15 min.

Album Review of the Moment: "Neil's uber-country phase" - A Treasure

Ben Keith: 1937 - 2010

The Album Review of the Moment is on A Treasure - Neil Young & The International Harvesters by D. I. Kertis:
Up front let me admit that country Neil, and I mean hardcore country Neil, isn't my favorite incarnation.

'Old Ways' remains one of my least-played Neil Young albums. That said, I do often enjoy the sound of country *music*; it's the lyrics that bother me, more often than not. That's why 'Nothing is Perfect' is my least favorite track here. It has all the lyrical subtlety of a jackhammer, which is a bit odd coming from Neil--especially on a religiously related theme. The only thing I really enjoy about that one is how Neil redefines what it means to 'stand by your man.' The rest of it I feel I could get by inviting myself to dinner at a southern Baptist pastor's house. Sorry, I'm a Northern Man. I really have nothing against Mr. Christ. It's some of the Christians I find stifling and frustrating.

'Let Your Fingers do the Walking' is mostly whimsical good fun. However, the opening verse leaves a somewhat sour taste in my mouth: 'Back in the days of covered wagons/a man had his way/whether talkin' to a woman/ or crossing the USA.' I know, given his sentiments expressed in other songs--including some here--that Neil almost certainly doesn't mean anything by this, and it may just be that he embraced the undercurrent of misogyny I detect as part of the genre exercise, but the whole '19th century cowboy' mentality still holds back some of this stuff for me. I guess I'm just not a good old boy.

'Bound for Glory', though, is a great track I never appreciated before. The chords and story are totally Neil, in spite of the heavy country arrangement. I found this song, for lack of a better word, a revelation. I particularly like the line, 'fireflies buzzing around her head, like candles in the fog'. The story, moreover, is just what I like to hear: two people discovering themselves and their world, going against conventional values to find the right thing.

'Motor City' fit in better with the boneheaded Crazy Horse material it originally appeared alongside, but I at least dig the guitar. 'Southern Pacific' is a very nice alternative to the original, with perhaps the more effective arrangement of the two, featuring racing fiddles and banjos. It plays like an audial storm of sorts. I'm sure I'll also revisit 'Grey Riders' a good bit--very interesting one, which along with Amber Jean, I cannot imagine why they didn't make it to the original 'Old Ways' album.

Did I mention that 'Are you Ready for the Country?' chugs along *very* nicely here? Yes, it does. I especially enjoyed (I believe) Pig Robbins' jangling piano parts, and Ben Keith's unmatched slide guitar augmentation, which graces many of the tracks. 'Flying on the Ground', the other revived classic, is also a very well re-imagined version of the Buffalo Springfield track. Am I wrong, or was this another track originally handed off to Richie Furay? I wonder if Neil included this track in light of the Buffalo Springfield reunion?

Anyway, this album is overall a nice look at Neil's uber-country phase, in spite of my small liberal feminist hang-ups. It's also an important piece in the puzzle of Neil's career history, and goes some way to filling the gaps. Did anyone else notice, btw, that this is PS #9? So now we have #0, 1, 2,3, 9, and 12. That means there are two PS volumes between 'Treasure' and 'Dreamin' Man'. and five volumes that fit somewhere between 'Massey Hall' and 'Treasure.'

The distant camera is starting to pull back, and the picture is getting (a little) less fuzzy...

Thanks -- as always -- D.I.! Good to see again ... less fuzzy...

Also, a tribute to the late Ben Keith.

Crosby, Stills & Nash To Headline MUSE 2011 (No Nukes) Concert

Crosby, Stills & Nash, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Jason Mraz, The Doobie Brothers, Tom Morello, John Hall, Kitaro, Jonathan Wilson, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and special guests are coming together for a special benefit event on Sunday, August 7 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA.

Proceeds from the concert will be distributed to Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) to support Japan disaster relief efforts, and organizations worldwide working to promote safe, alternative, non-nuclear energy.

“The MUSE concert will not only be a great show, it will hopefully entice the public to become better informed of the tremendous dangers of nuclear power,” says Graham Nash. “We have to keep real and true information flowing so that people can act on it.”

“The disaster in Fukushima is not only a disaster for Japan. It is a global disaster. We come together now across cultural boundaries, political and generational boundaries, to call for changes in the way we use energy, and in the ways we conduct the search for solutions to the problems facing humanity,” says Jackson Browne. “We join with the people of Japan, and people everywhere who believe in a non-nuclear future.”

It was shortly after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that triggered multiple meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan that the decision was made to coordinate a benefit. Shoreline Amphitheatre was chosen because of its close proximity to the Pacific Rim, Northern California’s history and deep association with Japan—and because nuclear reactors on the California coast store spent fuel rods in the same manner as at Fukushima. The concert date falls between the anniversaries of atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima (August 6, 1945) and Nagasaki (August 9, 1945).

“We’re so lucky to have been able to bring back some of the original MUSE team to collaborate with some new and younger artists for MUSE 2, so that we can immediately help with the Japan relief effort and raise funds and awareness for the no nukes issue,” says Bonnie Raitt. “I'm excited to be a part of this important and truly collaborative effort. It’s going to be a very special, one of a kind event.”

Pat Simmons, of The Doobie Brothers, who performed at the original MUSE shows adds, "We are so proud to be reuniting with so many of our talented friends, who share our concern for the safety, and sustainable future of our fragile planet. Current events have brought us to a turning point in our human existence. It's time to consider alternatives to the present course of energy production that have been forced upon us by an aggressive corporate power structure. We join together to generate funds to help our Japanese friends, as they recover from the devastation that they have had to endure, due to man's careless use of nuclear energy, and nature's unpredictability. Through these efforts we also hope to raise public awareness of the challenges we are faced with, and the important responsibilities we share in moving us towards a safer, nuclear free future."

The concert stage will be powered by an integrated system of clean, alternative energy sources, using solar, biodiesel, and wind technologies. The energy-saving GRNLite LED lighting rig for the show has been donated by Bandit Lites, and Schubert Systems has donated the sound rig. In addition, Shoreline is the largest Green certified concert venue in the United States and is a founding member of the Green Music Group. One goal is that the concert will inspire musicians in other areas to organize shows that both employ and promote safe energy alternatives, and that raise funds for disaster relief efforts and for groups—local, regional, national, and international alike—advocating non-nuclear programs and initiatives.

“As Japan struggles to subdue meltdowns at Fukushima, and Ft. Calhoun Nuclear in Nebraska struggles to keep its reactor and spent fuel above the Missouri's floodwaters, we once again face a crucial choice,” says John Hall (who, in addition to being a musician, was a U.S. Representative from New York, 2007-2011). “Will we, as a country, invest in clean, renewable sources of energy, or will we continue to use taxpayer dollars to indemnify and subsidize the dirty, deadly old technologies that are making our planet unlivable?”

"Even though the news cycle has moved on from the Fukushima disaster, this is another massive world energy disaster from which there will be long-term effects,” adds Jason Mraz. “I am thrilled to be a part of this amazing show that will not only help those in Japan, but that will also call attention to the urgent need to embrace safe, clean energy alternatives."

Japanese musician and multi-instrumentalist, Kitaro, joined the bill as a way to give thanks “for all of the support for Japan from the world, and to all of the Japanese, who are helping each other.” He adds, “It is time to consider the change to alternative clean energy instead of nuclear power.”

Concert Review of the Moment: Buffalo Springfield @ Santa Barbara, CA

Buffalo Springfield at Bonnaroo 2011

The Concert Review of the Moment is from Buffalo Springfield in Santa Barbara, CA - June 7 & 8, 2011 by 60's Joan:
Saw the Buffalo Springfield with my buds, 6/8/11, at the Santa Barbara Bowl.

The general consensus: the only thing that is exactly clear is that it is potentially everyone's great fortune that the collectively and independently historical, phenomenal, brilliant 60's musical, socio-political, and humanitarian pioneers, the Buffalo Springfield, are back together again, bringing abundant joy to the global community, especially at a time when such joy is sorely needed.

Instead of superficial, egotistical, ultimately senseless criticism, let us count our blessings, for a number of reasons, and rejoice for the rare and golden opportunity to experience, or re-experience, the Buffalo Springfield and a new-millenium Love-In right now, in the present moment while we are all still here in Earth-mode. Kudos, Homage, and Thank You, Buffalo Springfield!

We are deeply grateful beyond words and cannot wait for the next one if it is meant to be! Carpe diem, people, please see the Buffalo Springfield while it is still possible to do so=a blessed treat!

Godspeed to all!

Thanks 60's Joan!

Album Review of the Moment: Neil Young's A Treasure - "Need We Say More?" on Jambands.com

Unburied Treasure....
Treasure tribute from Little Raggie

Last we checked, Neil Young's new CD "A Treasure" is doing surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly?) well on the Amazon.com Bestseller List now at #8 #5. Not too bad for a 25 year old live y'all-ternative-country-rock-roots album, we suppose...

More on the bumper crop of reviews from Jambands.com by Brian Robbins:
The fact of the matter is, ol’ Neil can’t help but be ol’ Neil, no matter what genre he’s visiting at the moment – and his International Harvesters period captured on A Treasure is no exception.

“Motor City” has plenty of yee-haw, but the snap and bite and rolling-iron-pride of the lyrics would fit right onto last year’s Fork In The Road without batting an eye. If Young’s late 80’s blues project The Bluenotes had included a pedal steel and fiddle, it could easily be them raunching out “Soul Of A Woman”. The two numbers originally released on Young’s Old Ways album in 1985 – “Get Back To The Country” and “Bound For Glory” – sound like good old bouncy country tunes from a distance. But dig into the stories contained within – Young breaking clear of his early rock ‘n’ roll success and a young female hitchhiker finding love “out on the Trans-Canada highway” – and you’ll find those twists that are anything but traditional.

The best thing to do is simply sit back and enjoy the ride: “Are You Ready For The Country” is looser and swaggers far more than the original on Harvest. And “Amber Jean”, Young’s tribute to his daughter (“This one’s for you, honey,” he says just before the band launches into it), is chock full of sunshine and love.

Thanks Brian, we didn’t think you'd miss ol’ Neil! ;)

Happy Father's Day! Neil Young,"Old Man" & The Story Behind The Song

Happy Father's Day!

Neil Young's "Old Man" seems an appropriate song for the day.

From BBC 1971.... back when Neil was a young man ...

look at how time flies past....

i'm a lot like you were...

From his 1972 album Harvest, "Old Man" is definitely one of Mr Young's most enduring songs of all time with brilliant banjo and steel guitar. James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt provide backing vocals.

The song was inspired by the caretaker of the Northern California Broken Arrow Ranch, which Young purchased for $350,000 in 1970 when he was just 25 years old.

The song has themes of loneliness and lost love: "Live alone in a paradise that makes me think of two" recalled with a certain pain "love lost/such a cost/give me things that don't get lost."

Yet Neil searches on for that oh-so elusive heart of gold:

"I need someone to love me the whole day through
Oh one look in my eyes and you can tell that's true."

In the film "Heart of Gold", Young introduces the song as follows:
About that time when I wrote (Heart of Gold), and I was touring, I had also -- just, you know, being a rich hippie for the first time -- I had purchased a ranch, and I still live there today.

And there was a couple living on it that were the caretakers, an old gentleman named Louis Avala and his wife Clara. And there was this old blue Jeep there, and Louis took me for a ride in this blue Jeep. He gets me up there on the top side of the place, and there's this lake up there that fed all the pastures, and he says, 'Well, tell me, how does a young man like yourself have enough money to buy a place like this?'

And I said, 'Well, just lucky, Louie, just real lucky.' And he said, 'Well, that's the darndest thing I ever heard.'

And I wrote this song for him.
