Neil Young's New Album 'Le Noise'
Release Date: September 28, 2010
Neil Young's new album Le Noise is scheduled to be released on September 28, 2010.
In keeping with his recent social networking activities, the announcement was made using Neil Young's official Facebook page:
“Le Noise” is complete. It is a solo record. Playbacks are happening now. Release date is September 28th. It will be available in Vinyl, CD and I tunes in the first edition, followed by Blu-Ray, and an APP for I-Phone and I-Pad a month or so later. The app will be free. It gives you an interactive album cover. Forgive my use of the word “album”. I am old school. When you buy the songs/movies from I- tunes they show up in your APP.
Peace ny
The album has been produced by Daniel Lanois (who, earlier this year was involved in a serious motorcycle accident) and was recorded in Los Angeles over the course of four full moons. "We cut a couple of solo acoustic songs, but the rest is very electric," Lanois told Rolling Stone last month. "There's no band, but I got in there with my sonics. There's nothing else out there like it."
The album was previewed by a select group last week and early reports indicate there's much to anticipate. From Los Angeles Times by Randy Lewis:
What’s striking about “Le Noise” is the way it both summarizes and distills Young’s singular approach to music, predominantly just Neil and a guitar: his big, white hollow-body Gretsch electric slashing and burning for most of the tracks, a couple built around picked and strummed acoustic instruments. Both are recorded and amplified -- literally and metaphorically -- by Lanois’ signature soundscapes that loop vocals, and enhance the guitars’ bass notes through distortion boxes, synthesizers and other electronics.
The eight songs travel a path from the electrified reverie of “Walk With Me,” through the nakedly autobiographical “Love and War,” to the combative “Angry World” and into the epic journey through the American frontier that’s always fascinated Young with the acoustic guitar-driven “Peaceful Valley.”
The songs bristle with energy -- anger, passion, love, self-doubt, regret, hope -- emotions that seem all the more pure expressed without percussion, keyboards, strings or other instruments, just by Young’s voice and guitars.
Lanois said the project started out as an all acoustic album, but that idea didn’t last long once the producer began prodding Young to really get at what was on his mind and in his heart. “He has the ability to really reach down deep inside,” Lanois said during a break before the album was played a second time, this time accompanied by gritty film footage of Young singing the vocals.
From another preview review on Buzzbands.LA by Kevin:
“Le Noise” is audacious and loud and trippy and layered and blunt and, unless you arbitrarily discriminate against the AARP generation, the best 38 minutes you will have spent in quite some time.
Over on Blogcritics fall music preview "Dylan, Springsteen And Neil Young: The Coming Fall Trifecta From Rock's Holy Trinity" by Glen Boyd comes this verdict:
This won't be a huge commercial hit, but should do solid business with Neil Young's core fanbase. It should also do much better than 2009's Fork In The Road did with the critics, and will very likely make a few year-end "Best Of 2010" lists. This could be one of this years bigger sleepers.
Track Listing:
01. "Walk With Me"
02. "Sign Of Love"
03. "Someone's Gonna Rescue You"
04. "Love And War"
05. "Angry World"
06. "Hitchhiker"
07. "Peaceful Valley Boulevard"
08. "Rumblin'"
Interestingly, the track list omits some new songs recently debuted on the Twisted Road tour like "You Never Call", while adding several unperformed songs like "Angry World" and "Someone's Gonna Rescue You".

Can't wait for this one especially with Lanois in there adding some sound!
If it just is half as enjoyable as "dreamin' man", I'll be a very happy Neiler!!
excited doc
Excellent- I hope this is the decade-ending (or beginning) milestone for Neil, as is predicted. Also, I hope to listen to this the first time on vinyl, as it should be heard. If there is any piece of advise I can offer a music fan its this: buy a turntable if you don't own one, or pull your old one out of mothballs- nothing sounds better...nothing.
I have this feeling he started where he left off with "Dead Man" which is probably the best guitar music I've ever heard ...
Oh wow. I just turned on the Emmy's as Jewel was being introduced to sing the "In Memorium" which spotlights the people in the television industry who have passed away in the last year. When she came out she said she was dedicating the song to a friend of hers who passed away, Ben Keith. Wow. Thank you Jewel
Sorry for dropping the thread. But hey, can't wait for Le Noise. I can't remember the last time I was this excited about a new release from Neil.
Sandy
I look forward to this. The new songs were so jaw-droppingly good live, and I trust Daniel Lanois implicitly, considering among other things, he helmed the two finest Dylan albums of the last 30 years.
Oh and Shitty Horse, you have inspired me to go out and get a turntable (well, you have inspired me in many other ways as well). I have lots of albums because my brother and I buy them when we can. We have a nice but not nearly complete collection of Neil's albums. So, thanks for getting me off my ass and making that happen.
Any suggestions out there for a good system??
Thanks, Sandy
I hope that the CD will come with the usual bonus DVD, which I hope will include the video material that was mentioned in the Times article. Still not sure whether or not to buy the Blu-Ray, will have to have some substantial added value.
I also can't wait for 'Le Noise'...
But it's sad that 'you never call' and 'Laia' will not be on the Album...
I will buy the Vinyl Version like i have always done, and maybe Later the Blu ray Version because of the Video Material wich also seems to be very interresting...
I also hope that 'Trunk Show' will be soon available in Europe!
At least 38 minutes will make it easier to get into. Meanwhile, that's one of the most disturbing photos I've ever seen on Daniel Lanois.
I am gratified that Leia and You Never Call are NOT on the album and that we get two new tracks. The album looks solid. From the start, I believed that Leia was a cute little ditty that would best released as a single, and provided as a gift to Neil's grandkids. "You Never Call", while a very good song, is too personal for this kind of thing - it beleongs in an anthology (NYA IV?), not "Le Noise"... good call on both counts Neil and Daniel! I am psyched to hear "sonic versions" of Peaceful Valley and Love and War, and of course, the two new tracks. Should be quite the event!

On the recent tour, I was struck by how Neil has built the new songs around the stereo White Falcon - a guitar that much influenced the electric elements of ATGR and Harvest. Because the bass and treble strings are split into two signals (like no other guitar, really), Lanois can manipulate the bass notes (much as Neil did in concert). Old Black gets a lot of ink (and rightly so) but that Gretsch 6137 is very special and I love that he's returned to it. So looking forward to this album!

It's a pity for You Never Call. Lanois wanted an organ version.I don't think that Neil was very happy about this choice.Neil has costantly palyed the acoustic version during the tour. Maybe in the Lanois mind a third acoustic song would have shift the mood of the album.
I don't like much the album title (maybe coming from the Neil humour?). Twisted Road was much better.
Andrea."So Tired"
Can't wait for this one! Gonna be awesome, I know already!
Good to have the Wheat back in business too...
:-)
Yeah, the title is a bit of an eye-roller, but as a joke on the fact that Lanois argued with Neil to not call it Twisted Road (which I agree with Andrea, I liked a bit better), it's pretty hilarious really.
And it's great that Neil has such a sense of humor and doesn't take himself too seriously, to the point where he'd be willing to make a joke out of his album title, at the expense of the producer.
It is the audio that's going to matter in the end, and I can't wait to hear it. Sounds like it's gonna be great sounding.
It is too bad that Neil left Leia and YNC off the album... but if the fate of Get Around says anything... often it's the best that get the axe.
Personally I think Get Around would have been a huge hit. It's one of the best, and most accessibly good, songs he's written in many years.
welcome back Thrasher!

unfortunatly, not dedicated to brother Ben.
Too bad Jimmy Fallon didn't do his Neil impersonation.

The album cover is classic and the name really does fit on several levels. It's good to see Neil's humor is still intact.
The omission of a couple of songs make them all the more special for those of us lucky enough to have attended a Twisted Road show. And I have to agree that they probably would mess up the flow of the record, based on what we know about it. All indicators point to an instant Neil classic. How exciting is that?!
Off subject, does anyone have a clue when Trunk Show will be released? And what happened to Toast? There's no such thing as too much Neil ...
Man, it's good the Thrashers came back. Good times are coming.
Totally agree with J Neo Marvin about those two Dylan albums, Daniel Lanois is obviously very capable of working with a great artist to produce wonderfully atmospheric sounds. It`s getting more exciting all the time as new snippets of info leak out!
I wasn`t sure about the title at first but it`s really grown on me and seems just so `Neil`!
Jill
ps - got the new BA mag and love your photo of Neil and Carl, Sandy! Well caught!
What the hell does 'commercial hit' have to do with real music? Money is not the supreme life experience; human emotion shared by sound is the supreme life experience. Thank you, Neil and "Lenoise"...
