Social Networking with Neil Young, Again
That social networking genius Neil Young is at again.
Soc-net'g on his latest Facebook post on the upcoming Tour of the Gulf Coast, Neil is racking up thousands of Likes and Comments already.
What strikes us is how overwhelming the vast, vast majority of comments are 100% totally supportive. Compare and contrast with the vitriol, disappointment and accustions which have appeared on Rust and here on TW.
More food for thought, we suppose.
We've been beginning to sense a long time trend in some forums, like ours here, that they're becoming almost a hangout for Neil bashers that is in no way representative of the overall mindset of the typical Neil fan. One would think that the hardcores might be much more critical than the average fan. But some of this seems to have crossed the boundary of normal fan grumbling into something much darker and disturbing.
There. We said it.

I think in some cases you just have people who resent that there are 'other' neil fans who are as hardcore as they are. And they like to bash the fans by bashing neil. I don't bash anyone, but I kind of feel this way.

Thrasher, I think in many ways the style with which you write stuff on here is primarily what encourages people to argue about it. Nothing wrong with that, but sometimes it sounds like you're actually trying to bait people into arguing even if they essentially agree with you. That, paired with your obvious desire to defend everything Neil does (especially when it doesn't need defending!), is going to get on some peoples nerves and they may very well vent that on your blog. I like what you do here, but all I'm saying is - respect others opinions and they are more likely to respect you. Obviously there will be some who just want to be nasty, in which case why don't you just ignore them?

In all the years, we've been doing this, your comment is the first we can recall quite like this. We mean that in a good way.
For the most part, our feedback is in 2 polar opposite extremes. A) Thrasher you're a pompous arrogant Neil-know-it-all asshole. or B) TW is a great resource that is a labor of love and can't thank you enough for separating so much wheat from so much chaff.
There's not too much nuance in between like yours.
That said, our response to A above is that we get an unbelievable amount of hate mail for what seems to us like a rather benign topic -- Neil Young News.
So as we're trashing comments, filtering junk/hate mail and trying to blog simulataneously while bumping along with a handheld wedged into a subway car, things can get a bit mixed up between reacting to hate & spreading Neil love. So it does tend to get a bit schizophrenic sometimes.
Such a time is this.
A charity benefit tour generates huge amounts of disgust. Neil sells out to Guitar Hero. You name it, we're on the front lines of everyone's bitterness.
Like we've said before. We don't work for Neil or have any official affiliation whatsoever. We're just a fan like you.
And we're constantly puzzled by how some seem to feel that they're venting on TW makes a difference to Neil.
That said, we have seen comments on this blog directly shift Neil. Like the Harvest Moon requests or NYA MP3's.
The first example came from the heart. The 2nd, not so sure.
Anyways, the point is that TW is kinda like this giant echo chamber/house of mirrors where it's sometimes is hard to put your finger on which way the wind is blowin' my friend.
Obviously, there are clearly folks here who love to stir things up.
And to your point, we actually welcome & love a spirited debate. But we've laid out our Comments Policy pretty clearly.
Regarding the Gulf Gigs & Tysons & factory farms fiasco, it is absolutely ludicrous that we stifle debate. look at those comments. They ran 5 to 1 negative on the subject of Gulf Aid. Nobody's free speech was infringed. But yes we do trash gratuitous slander, juvenile snark, and other misbehavior. No apologies there.
But if our tone is off at times, please try and understand the volume we're dealing with here and the precious few moments each day we have to devote to this little blog.
FWIW, we've run this website for 14 years and blogged virtually daily since 2003. 7 years straight. Are we tired? hell yeah. Do we think about quitting? everyday.
But we don't because we know that the vast majority -- similar to Neil's FB comments -- love & appreciate Neil's music. it keeps us going too and tries not to bring us down.

From reading your words (now and in the past) I know that you are doing a excellent job with a excellent attitude, but I am also aware that blogs such as this are always going to attract a variety of opinions. The fact that you obviously care so much about the subject matter at hand is obviously going to amplify this. I see that as no bad thing and it is to your credit that you try not to censor differing opinions and debate.
Sometimes I do think you can be a little defensive which may lead to people getting defensive (and possibly aggressive) themselves. Again, this isn't meant as a criticism - just my view on this from a relative outsider's point of view. I recognise completely that there are some nasty types out there who are going to cause trouble regardless of others' thoughts and feelings, and I do feel the best course of action is to just ignore these particularly extreme remarks to expose them for what they are....just my opinion.
Anyway, keep up the excellent work Thrasher - and thanks again for the nice comment.

What would Neil have to do for Thrasher to criticize him?
Why does Thrasher always jump to Saint Neil's defense when fans criticize him, seemingly for valid reasons?
This whole Tyson Foods situation is worthy of debate. Above all, i have no problem with it, as it will help feed needy people.
But what does it say about Neil, seeing how he's criticized Factory Farms for a generation?
Fans have a reason to bring it up as a discussion point in a mature manner.

...the Tyson Foods thing was always going to provoke quite a reaction, just because there is very obviously two sides to it. The only comments that I personally found disturbing were the ones that failed to see both sides. One comment even seemed to suggest the abuse of chickens is fully acceptable anyway. That scares me. Others didn't even mention at all the charitable aspect. The bottom line - I was glad to see people asking inquisitive questions about it, when done so with respect and understanding. I imagine it can be hard for Thrasher who has to differentiate between the comments with good intentions and the more offensive ones. Sometimes there is a fine line between the two!
Love the man, he's done so much for all in need. Coming here to Pensacola and I'm hopin he does Needle & the damage done. All praceeds of this concert (a 300 seat venue) go to Humana Food Banks on the Gulf Coast to benefit our lost jobs due to the oil spill! We thank Neil as we are still suffering. Anyone who wants to know, we have white beaches and could use some visitors, rooms are cheap and food is great!

This site is more a "Neil news blog" than just the facts, more of a personal spin on the news than just whats thrown out into the public arena. If you don't want people to give their personal opinion on the current events of Neil you should probably keep your personality out of the news. You can't have it both ways in the new digital news and blogging age. Remember, a good reporter keeps themselves out of the story. I come here because it has the most up to date Neil news on the net, and I'll take the Neil wheat with the Thrasher wheat if thats the cost.

You'll be much happier - you take this stuff far too seriously, man.
Neil's a huge source of joy in the world and Thrasher's wheat the place to share that joy with other's who appreciate what Neil does. That doesn't mean we'll all agree with everything, I've been on the other side of a few of these debates. But there's a fair number of folks who come here and they sadly don't feel the joy, they're cynical and bitter, and they can't stand to see the rest of us loving what Neil's scene and TW is all about. Thrasher has an amazing site, its truly befitting of Neil's greatness and I don't say it lightly and he does it as a volunteer project and puts up with a lot of crap. Thrasher is, in my view, the ringleader because he really, really gets it and is willing to sacrifice so the rest of us can have a place to call home in cyberspace ... I don't blame him for being pissed when the rebels spew their negativity here or when people are ungrateful and make it personal. If they weren't anonymous we'd collectively kick them out on their asses because they're not additive ... spirited debate is cool, spiteful, unsubstantiated negativity ain't ... make now mistake these trolls smell blood and want nothing better than to spoil this party. Thrasher my hat's off to you for holding these punks at bay by deleting their garbage and for also having the courage to allow some of it to come through so we can expose its silliness.

Just wanted to give TW readers a quick update on Solid Sounds Festival here in North Adams. Wilco should win some kind of prize for putting on maybe the best festival that I have ever been to...yesterday was completely and over-the-top phenomenal! Incredible set by the The Baseball Project; Mavis Staples might have been the single best and most moving performance that I've ever seen. And then Wilco played for about 2 1/2 hours to close the day!
Weather was perfect, music was perfect, crowd was perfect! Made many new friends and spent Wilco's set w/ Lindsay and Joe from FL. They are very nice and some real music fans...keep on rockin' kids! Talking with Mike Mills, Steve Wynn and Scott McCaughey at the Mohawk Bar put the exclamation point on the day. Oh, and Jeff Tweedy did a Dunk Tank for charity earlier in the day!
Today s/b equally great, with Nels doing a 2 p.m. show and then Jeff Plus at 4 p.m. to close. If you are anywhere w/in a hundred miles of this, try to get there! Who knows who the special guests might be? Could Neil be in town?

People, Rusties, who visit your site and the Rustlist are generally hardcore fans, unlike Facebook, generally 'fans' that couldn't name a Neil song recorded after 1995.
It should be noted, that in my original post, which you like to suggest was cynical, in fact was nothing of the kind.
Tyson is not your typical food conglomerate. They are not ADM or Monsanto (yes, I follow farm policy).
You asked previously for some kind of 'walk the walk' resume. My carbon footprint is relatively small (unlike fans that jet to and fro to multiple shows), I shop local, bike when I can, organic garden, all the PC stuff. I 'walk the walk' as much as possible in the modern world.
What make the Tyson-Neil debate worthy of continuing discussion is the disconnect with our hero, yes, but still very human. 'Stop Factory Farms' but...
Tyson can support the event. That isn't the problem I have. It is a free country, and a capitalist system, understood. But for Neil make these statements is problematic for many of us.
For you to negate the concern of many and to hurl names 'trolls', 'cynics' and the like, is uncalled for.

So much has been so eloquently said I'll never come close—but really, people, before the current economic crisis there were children in this area going to bed hungry. Every night. And as for the hateful comment about skinny people, body size is deceptive—only one of the physiological consequences of malnutrition. The long-term effects of cheap food consumption—simple carbohydrates are cheap—begin early and can be life-long ... even after eating habits have been changed. Ask any observant teacher who's been in front of a class—she can tell you which children don't eat right.
I mean, come on people, we tell pregnant women to supplement their B vitamin intake to foster normal fetal neurological development, then forget how important nutrition is to minds that have left the uterus for this environment? Why do we have school lunch programs? Nutrition matters. Quality matters. But that's an economic issue too ... and there are many people in this country who do not have the resources which afford opportunities to choose wisely.
I don't know what world you live in, but I grew up in this area. The summers of my childhood were spent on my maternal grandparent’s farm: my favorite way to spend the morning was riding with my grandfather to deliver his milk. I have churned butter—and I have family who STILL farm (personal and small). I also have family who raise chickens for Tyson. Hate if you must—but everyone who's struggled to make a decent living in that area knows getting a Tyson contract means you will actually get to live above the poverty level—in a state that's been in the 'Top Ten' of THAT list for ... well, as long as I can remember. But what about raising chickens for Tyson? For my extended family, it was a business decision—one made by a man who’d watched his own children languish on the meager sustenance he could provide by working a factory job AND farming the muck of red clay so abundant here ... but I digress ... Wanna criticize? Put on the hungry shoes. Better yet, put them on your child. No? Then do something to make a difference. And here's the twist--in SOMEONE ELSE'S life.
It gives you less time to point fingers at those who ARE doing something. And if you find you STILL have time to blast others who are trying to make a difference, then take legitimate action toward change—let Tyson's know directly you disapprove of their practices. Pursue legal action. (That means you'll have to do more than quote dated material tho' ...) Better yet, go to work in the areas where Tyson plants are, where Tyson farmers live, to change THEIR lives—and the lives of their children. I know those people and I guarantee you, those parents are like most—they want better things for their children. Those plants are there for a reason you know ... I understand that even more, now that I know about the Tyson-Farm Aid connection ....
Finally, I wonder which of you could bear the scrutiny you seem to think appropriate for others. Are you perfect? Are all your friends? Associates? Have you ever done something for reasons you didn't care to explain to the world, ever wished you could simply help without taking a tongue-lashing for it? Or have you, perchance, ever baked a cake—without eggs? Not the same as one with eggs—so do you forego the eggs because the lives of egg-producing chickens is less humane than that of chickens allowed to live free and produce eggs at will? Hmmm. No chickens in the wild? No chickens out there en masse, defending themselves against predators, foraging for food, building up those wings so they can soar to new heights, take their rightful place with the hawk, falcon, eagle? No ideal chicken state?

Sorry. That really wasn't my point—my point is that it is, at times, necessary to do things in a particular way because that provides what is needed. Sure, it would be great if 1,000,000 pounds of fresh, organic protein were made available to the area—but Tyson stepped up. This makes my heart glad. I live in northeast Mississippi and I worry about the people on the gulf coast - in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida. Good for Neil Young and John Tyson for doing something that will directly help the gulf coast residents and also for asking the people who come to the concerts to help as well.

I think that some kind of editing ("censoring) is necessary for all Internet-sites of this kind. Of course it must be difficult knowing where to draw the line. Maybe Thrasher, I am certiainly not sure, you more often should not take directly part in the ongoing discussion. But I think some kind of summary from time to time is desired. To people wanting more 'balanced' views about Neil from Thrasher: I think Thrasher should leave that to other 'fans'. Would I go to this site if Thrasher had not been this entusiastic about Neil and what he is doing?
When it comes to politics (or reated issues) I am sure it is possible to disagree with Neil from time to time, though I am sure his intentions are good. But in the end he makes a positive difference in a lot of people's lives.
I am sorry if it's hard to understand what I am trying to express (I think it is difficult!) and a digression at the end might not clarify anything: My son, 6 years old, knows I go to this site on the Internet every day. One day he asked about how he was made. I answered that I had to check on Internet what answer to give a six year old. My son replied: Does Neil Young know that? And continued: I would not understand because he speaks only English.

Thrasher is way too controlling of the comments. I've had numerous comments deleted for no obvious reason. I'm not abusive, foul-mouthed, name-calling. He tries to create a little Disneyland here and that's not the real world and that's not Neil. For as much as Thrasher espouses liberal causes, he's scarily controlling of what other people are allowed to say.

I think is a good one. but it has to support the people in going on after BP. there is no reason to put hopes in helping hands and BP can come out of this without being taken for full responsibility. not only the people are affected by this spill, the whole world is affected and BP has to pay every cent. I would prefer seeing some of them going to jail and being held responsible personally. dead or alive. and: destroy BP, take their money and give it to the people. BP is an enemy of mankind and has to be treated so.

Not trying to cynical b/c i thiink for Neil to go into the USA South he needed to have a real Sothern Man riding shotgun. And Tyson is a native son who can help with whatever pushback comes along. Like some of these off the wall postings.

No, I'm sorry, Freedom of Speech is a legal term and by definition does not apply in this situation. This is a personal website. It is by design one-sided. It is a place for Neil fans to gather Thrash can do whatever he wants with it. I understand the concept of having open discussions and I beileve Thrash is more than generous with allowing inflamatory comments.

Yeah, wasn't that a great version of Look Out for My Love that Jeff Tweedy did today! Made a note that it was 5:20 edt when he started this number. I was sitting with my new buddies Lindsey and Joe during the second half of Jeff's set after being way down in front for the first 1/2. They are just a really nice young couple and it was great to enjoy Wilco's set last night and Jeff's set today with them...hope they have a safe drive back to FL.
This had to be the most attentive and respectful crowd that I've ever seen at a concert. Every couple there seemed to be holding hands and falling in love all over again during Jeff's set. And there were so many adorable kids and beautiful babies there today...perfect ending for an awesome festival weekend. I met so many cool and friendly folks...Wilco fans are great!
You must have made your comment right after the show ended...I don't think I was even to my car yet at that point! Long ride back home for me but totally worth every mile. I really love your town and hope to get back there soon!
Did you catch Nels' set today in Courtyard D? That really separated the fans from the casual observers...people I saw leaving mostly had a WTF look on their faces, but those who stayed heard some outstanding music.

Actually can't they could possibly be fans but some of them seemed to know Neil's Farm Aid speechs pretty well over the years. Frothing at the mouth, rapid stuff.

There are no surprises with Neil and I. His view of life and politics are pretty much laid out there. Some even parodied in his music, films, blogs, alter egos, and currently in comic strip.
He's said a lot of stuff over the years at those Farm Aid concerts about a situation and people victimized by an industry run amok. I'm sure he stands by everything he said, even 20 years ago.
But lot has changed since Farm Aid began because people like Neil are open to solutions even if it means involving the industry giants who created the fiasco in the first place.
The bottom line is that this "us vs. them" has never gotten us anywhere in improving the conditions and livelihood for family farms.
Neils knows that more than anyone.
In terms of finding fault with others, don't you think NY gets enuf of that from the professional critics? If you want to harrass someone about mindless allegiance (not saying that that's what TW's doing), why don't you really go after those who's alleginaces are truly a dangerous threat.

I think the climate deniers are the folks who deny their conclusions about climate change are nothing but theories based on circumstantial evidence. Just recently it was discovered that some of the most influencial scientists responsible for much of the current research supporting climate change theory were suppressing critical data and research findings that contradicted their hypotheses. Bottom line, the science behind the whole climate change fear mongering is suspect. And by the way, large corporations (who we all love to hate) like GE have spend billions to support the climate change fight so they can reap mega billions in sales of wind turbines and other "green" tech equiptment. Of course, the cost of all this climate change stuff will be borne out by you and me. Ya see, there's more to picture than meets the eye!

To suggest that, like so many of you are doing, is absolutely RIDICULOUS. Telling us to get a life? Comparing us to the KKK? Some of you are truly insane it seems like. There is a reason why Thrasher spends all his spare time running this wonderfully infornative and interesting site and that is because he and Thrashette, like an awful lot more of us, love and appreciate Neil`s music and creativity and, unlike most of us, are prepared to work long hours to share and collate their knowledge of Neil-related info with other like-minded people. That makes Thrasher a very generous and dedicated person, it does not make him a sycophant.
Thrasher is quite right when he talks about all the negative comments coming from certain people criticizing Neil whatever he does or doesn`t do and also turning on Thrasher at every opportunity. This is Thrasher`s site for goodness sake and we should all be so thankful to him and Thrashette for all the tireless (and often thankless) work that they continue to do. Please let`s have some respect and stop all the whining and mud-slinging that`s going on. I really couldn`t blame them if they reached a point where they decided they`d had enough , and that would be a very sad day for all genuine Neil fans. We would all be losing something priceless and irreplaceable I wonder if any of the Thrasher critics could do any better? I guess if they could they`d be doing just that instead of spending their time thinking up new reasons to attack Thrasher.
As for deleting/censoring comments I think it`s quite usual and acceptable for a site to be monitored in this way. Thrasher`s mission statement is quite clear - to sort the wheat from the chaff. I would imagine that most of us would much rather spend our time reading honest and thoughtful comments, chat, and debate than having to wade through all kinds of offensive crap. It does seem as though there are some people who just come on TW to stir up trouble and spoil it for the rest, and who are not looking to participate in an interactive and friendly way at all. Why anyone would do that is a total mystery but there you are, there are some very strange people out there.
Having said all that, as others have suggested, maybe the best thing would be for all of us to just ignore all the spiteful and goading comments and not give the trouble-makers fuel for their fire, after all if they get the reaction they`re looking for they`ve won and will continue their attack.

If Thrasher were to forbid anonymous posts, this site would become hideous Stepford Wives territory. Its vitality would disappear.
I,as do others, have a good reason for remaining anonymous but would still like to contribute to the discussion.

The comments, they're interesting too, I think it's good to see a range of differing opinions, it's healthy.
Like everyone else I'm a big fan but I also like to see both sides of an argument, that's what makes things interesting, it's what happens throughout the free world, debates and differences of opinion.
I'd rather read comments of all flavours than read an official press statement that's been put together by a PR company or have a fan site where there's nothing but gushing comments.
The range of opinions I think is what give TW an edge and keeps it fresh, a bit like Neil himself, maybe we're all a bit like him - we're single minded and we like our opinions!
See the comments as a positive (even the negative ones), most online newspapers have comments and they all make for an interesting read.
Keep up the good work but don't worry too much about the opinions (or take them to heart), the 4 percenters I think are here because you're attracting the top level of Neil Young fans who know his work inside out and are viewing things at a much more detailed level than those on Facebook, who may have joined several
similar facebook fan pages.

I cannot believe all of the bullshit here! Bashing Thrasher? For what? Thrasher and Thrashette both WORK HARD to bring US a FANTASTIC site here- for Neil Young fans to enjoy. Why do you think Thrasher does not bash Neil? Gee, is it that hard to figure out? He is running a Neil Young fan/news site. I don’t think Thrasher interjects his opinion too much and when he does it is admiration. I would feel foolish spending my time- spare or full, dedicating a site to a musician and then bash him. It’s obvious Thrasher loves the man, as do I, and I'd be loath to bash Neil as well. I just have so much admiration for him that when I see something that can be even remotely interpreted as negative I figure there is NO WAY that I, as a fan, am going to have all the details- it’s not up to Neil, his handlers, Thrasher, or anyone else to full us in on everything. Come on, how much do we really know about what goes on behind the scenes? Most of what we know is second hand anyway. Make all the assumptions you want, but remember they are assumptions. It’s a strange thing, being a FAN of a celebrity. We have so much admiration for a man who seems larger than life- but he is only a man. There is only so much we as fans know- and its right that our knowledge be limited as too much is unhealthy for either party. Throw in the fact that Neil is such a private dude to begin with. Most of us didn’t know jack until Shakey came out- yeah we knew a lot but that book filled in the details and blank spots- but let’s not kid ourselves- there is a lot more that we don’t and may never know. We don’t know Neil.
Personally I have witnessed way too much good, dignity and passion from Neil to think he would ever knowingly try to screw a fan or contradict his steadfast view on some things (certainly not all). It’s perfectly OK that others don’t feel the way I do- believe me I think my devotion to the Wide World of Neil Young is something not everyone could or maybe even should have....it’s just me and I make no excuses and have no qualms about it.
As far as Thrasher's Wheat goes- I love this site. I truly appreciate the hard work that Thrasher puts in; I hope he really doesn’t stop. I admit I’m far from being the prefect commenter and I know Thrasher has deleted a fair share of my posts- but I understand why he did, when he did. Let’s not forget- this is his baby, he is the man behind the curtain here, master of his domain. Neither I, nor any of you could do what Thrasher does and frankly, I don’t want an imitation of Thrasher’s Wheat. I wrote something recently on a different post. I'm not sure who read it but I think it is appropriate here so I will post again slightly edited:
For people who are fans and perhaps not necessary writers, I'm always struck by the honesty and poignancy in so many comments here. In trying to describe something that cannot be seen, something that is unattainable, which art, music, and emotions are, we all struggle. Writers have struggled for years to convey feelings experienced- especially from art. Those who do it well, you just know when you read it. Others who think they do it well, you know these as well, usually don’t. Everyone here is different; from different experiences, backgrounds, and has different personalities, but we all feel so strongly about one dude's art that we are compelled to come on here and write about it- to convey that elusive and unattainable spirit that Neil is and by extension, puts into his art. That magic that Neil has to make us FEEL, time and time again. No other artist has that over us and so strong it is that we need to reach out to others to express that experience, that feeling- except many times, in our immediate lives, there are few who "get" this thing that we do. So, like reaching out into the vast darkness, we grab a hold of others here on this site. Others that get it. It’s like a couple giddy teenagers, grabbing a hold of each-other’s shoulders, with both hands, and a joyous expression on our faces as we look eye to eye, yelling out "We get IT!!” because we have found others, (out of the billions who don’t), who know exactly what we feel. We may put it in different words and have different opinions, but we all are MOVED by Neil’s music. We love the sorrow and innocence in his voice. We know that driving, imperfect guitar playing truly is perfect. We know what was happening when he wrote “down by the river” and what he felt when he wrote ‘Change your mind’. We love the soaring yet crunchy ride when Crazy Horse gets into a full gallop. We can almost feel the fragrant breeze coming off green hills and pastures, on our faces when we listen to Harvest. We all think of a loved one- past or present, when we hear Harvest Moon and felt the effects of Honeyslides when we listen to On the Beach. Being a Neil Young fan is like being a fan of no other- and we know it. As we follow his twisted road to where ever it leads, it’s good to connect with fellow travelers. It’s a great feeling, and one I get most often here, on good ole Thrashers Wheat. Thanks Thrasher

I admit I also enjoy a good musical once in a while, that doesn't mean I'm not manly! As for the "social networking" with Neil Young, I think Neil values his life and family (friends) too much to waste his time online. Doesn't he pays people to do that?
I am so with you on Jeff Tweedy's cover of Neil's songs. "Look out for My Love" is such a personal song that I believe only Jeff Tweedy is capable of making it relevant.
I imagine Jimmy James or Eddie Vedder or Jack White or Emmylou covering "Broken Arrow" because they understand the importance of timing & relevance & beauty of that song.
I have to agree with SSS that Thrasher is "too thin skinned", a "a neil sycophant", and "this site is a cluttered mess. it's a web designer's nightmare". This is constructive criticism.
I'm a huge Neil fan and like to check this blog for Neil news, gig reports, and thoughtful articles and fan's comments. I am put off by not being able to find things and having to wait ages for the page to load due to the design; having to wade through articles on Twitter comments; the overly worshipful tone; the obsession with bad reviews etc.
On the last point: I have been exasperated by bad reviews of Neil shows I missed when I couldn't afford to go (recently deemed a crime in itself here), and those who shout for Heart of Gold during the solos - but I think it's better to rise above this than obsess over it like a born-again christian would over the soul of a non-believer. I'm annoyed when I read somebody saying that they want to punch Neil because they think the Archives is a rip-off, but it's also annoying to see people being condescending towards those uninclined to splash out for a BluRay player. Most people who comment here are Neil fans: it should not be a competition.
If you argue a point on the internet, even about music, you stand a good chance of being called an idiot or a Nazi. If you met your opponent face to face, chances are you'd get along better. It's a mistake to equate the internet with 'real life'. Thrasher has a right to moderate offensive comments, but should be big enough to deal with dissent. There will be trolls, but not every dissenting voice is a troll.
@Isabella: "SSS is a psycho sicko", why exactly? Is it because he/she is a fan of heavy metal music (as am I)? If you disagree with a comment, at least try and address this without saying childish offensive things about the commenter.

I love Thrasher's Wheat and certainly appreciate the effort and dedication which goes into running this tremendously informative site about my favourite musician.
Yet as a long time reader, the issue of not accepting criticism has always bothered me. Whilst I don't frequently read the comments, I often skim through them and those who have anything remotely negative to say about Neil Young are castrated or censored. This is extremely unfair and I have always thought so. I have many friends who are not fans of Neil Young and openly criticise him. They know he's my favourite artist, but they justifiably don't feel a need to hide their opinion from those of my friends who do. Why can't those with criticism exercise the same transparency as those with praise?
If the criticism is constructive, then let it be said. You can still love an artist and be open to recognizing the faults they have made in their career. Many artists openly do so themselves. As we all know things would be a little bland if we all had the same opinion anyway.
Many Rusties on this site seem to find it very difficult and insulting when someone has something remotely negative to say about Neil Young. I'm pretty sure the man himself would be more than happy to hear people's conflicting thoughts and would accept that people have such views. The 4% stuff is something I have never understood and classing anyone who criticizes a move Neil Young makes as a "hater" is outrageous. The lack of respect for those who don't have something positive to say is unfair and hypocritical.

Neil tries to do a good thing ie feed starving people and he is put on trial. I am sure that he would prefer to provide Family Farm chicken but the reality is that small farmers would not have enough chicken.
Ask a starving man/woman if they would rather factory chicken or no chicken and see what they say.
If all the naysayers have a problem with factory chicken why don't they put their money where their mouths are and provide politically correct chicken for these starving people.

99% of the content you provide is invaluable to those of us who love and respect Neil Young. You often remark that Neil doesn't pay attention to what goes on here, but the facts say otherwise, be it concert requests or the extremely valuable response from the Archives Guy(s) who seemed to directly address various issues in a manner that made the content significantly more valuable.
Look - the unfortunate nature of Internet discourse these days is to provide a focus point for a lot of undifferentiated rage that lies barely under the surface of life in the 21st century - Living with War, so to speak, on a number of fronts. That's unlikely to change, so you have to either learn to live with it by allowing it to grow unchecked in the comment columns or excise it by eliminating the source, ruthlessly and without worrying who you're pissing off. But trying to walk an imaginary line, analyzing message by message what's acceptable, marginally acceptable, marginally unacceptable, or completely worthless, is, obviously, driving you crazy.
I would hate to think that walking away is the best solution. You've built the only home most of us know for expressing our love for this great artist.
Maybe consider asking a couple regular contributors to help moderate?

Visiting online forums is like going into a strange cellar with no light source. From time to time, abusive predators find their way into the cellar looking for victims.
Personally, I'd like to know the "person" with whom I am debating or conversing. However, because this is a public forum and I can't see who the person is, all I can go on is the personality they leave behind from the comments they contribute.

but comments seem to to take ages to come up, sometimes appear and then disappear which then gives me the wrong impression that I am being vetoed even before you get to see them.

It's not censorship to delete incoming posts by trolls. Trolls are called trolls for a reason. They spam message boards with idiotic b.s., nonsensical spews of hateful language, and cause disruptions in the dialogue, making it impossible to have an intelligent discussion.

Like you always have done in my opinion. I had established a google account well before I had established a blog account. everything was going fine..had the red 'B' goin' with the new "doc" name and everything.
Everything went to shit when you did not answer my responses on my now "exclusive non topic Dipthread".After about 3 non answered responses, you then put them on collectively, but not before in frustration,I responded in my old nemesis "Dr Dip".I then strangely lost my "doc" account even though I still had my g mail account.If you had let the posts go through without "comment moderation" there probably wouldn't of been any hassles.
I assure you Thrash, my comments will always be "non trollish" and "on Topic" for the thread in question.

In responding to your initial post and observation about Neil getting more support on Facebook (than here) for his tour of the Gulf, I think it's because most people registered on Facebook do not hide under anonymity.
Once someone is found violating the policy or trolling, they're out of there!
Since people can also protect their privacy over on Facebook, they tend to operate under the dictates of society by being more civil towards each other.
It's only a few of the "personalities" here on TW that misread the intentions of the people leaving the comment. And on rare occasions like on this thread, the vitriole grows faster than bacteria on roadkill.
Why don't you limit comments to people who are registered with a social network like facebook or myspace?

and any of my other fellow bloggers and ESPECIALLY YOU THRASH who I feel are my "family" I apologise what what has occurred on this site and sincerely hope that you can see through all this shit and judge me as a person whose integrity anbd character is being unfairly challenged..the biggest concern here is that mud sticks and my credibility and authenticity as a thrasher's wheatie is being severely and unfairly smeared.
I hope at the end of all this shitfight we can come out as friends on a site I dearly luv and we can get back to enjoying each others comments and our common bond for our passion for Neil!

As Matthew Lintzenich already said, I think the comments on this story show us why Trasher needs to moderate the comments. It's really unbelievable what some folks are posting here.
I've just found out about TW for about a month or three and in that short period of time I've read dozens of critical posts towards Neil, this site and Trasher himself, and those comments are still there now. However I have also seen some comments like many here above, comments that are plain rude and sometimes even offensive. Those comments deserve to be deleted. Criticsism can be found all over TW, and although Trasher may speak out against them for almost always being anonymous and not very constructive for anyone, which is his right as a blogger, he doesn't delete them, sometimes he even uses them in his blogs to provoke a discussion as he did with the story on the Twisted Road tour being somewhat similair to the Tonights The Night tour. Would some facist dictator like blogger use critical comments to provoke a discussion? No, he would just delete them and never mention them.
Trasher, don't let this stupid trolling wave bring you down. In the short time I'm on the site, I've already come to love it.
This message is for the Thrashers. I have had such a variety of emotions the last few day reading these comments. I have felt anger, sadness, anxiety, and I have to admit I laughed my ass off a couple of times.
I had no idea this is what you have to deal with on a daily basis. My admiration for you both has increased imeasurably. How do you sift through this and maintain any kind of mellow??
I am so worried these are the last days of this site and I just wanted to get one last comment in. I will miss it terribly but would totally understand if you just can't go through this anymore.
To all of you who say we accept no criticism of Neil. Well you are right. Are we off the deep end?? YES. Do we practically worship him? YES! Again, aside from my brother, I have no body to share this with. It is so wonderful to have a place to interact with others who are as obsessed as I am with the man and his music.
I am completely used to the fact that most people don't see it my way and that is fine with me. I am not on a crusade to convince anybody of anything. Just leave us alone and let us do our thing.
It says something about a person who can only feel better about themselves by trying to make others look bad. How sad for you.
