Neil Young Concert Reviews - Calgary, Alberta, Canada, July 24, 2010

From Calgary Herald: Young continues to challenge audience by Heath McCoy:
Saturday night at a sold out Jubilee Auditorium the 64-year-old took us down another Twisted Road (hence, the name of the tour), performing solo and introducing the audience to a large number of tunes they'd never heard before from his upcoming album.
It could very well have been one of those crazily frustrating Neil moments. (If he had tried to pull off the same show at the cavernous Saddledome, it might have been a disaster. The intimacy of a smaller venue was needed for this gig). Luckily, the concert was anything but frustrating.
Rather, there was a whole lot of magic happening on this night. I have to say that it was one of the most unforgettable and impacting gigs I've ever seen.
Neil Young will be performing tonight at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Special guest Bert Jansch will open concert.

NOTE: NYA#2 comments bumped to Neil Young News: Archives Volume #2 Update & NYA Special Release Series
Just wanted to let everyone know that the August 2010 issue of Uncut has a great article about the Twisted Road tour, with comments and raves from both Bert Jansch and Mark Golley. Includes a wonderful picture of Neil from the Hanover Theatre show and a copy of the set list from the Buffalo show.
Bert sounds as blown away by this music as everyone else. Choice comments include "The structure is very interesting. And the songs I'm hearing are literally unbelievable". He also says that "People are coming back to see the show again. They're travelling from all over to see these gigs. It's phenomenal."
Thanks Bert, Mark, Rob Hughes and Uncut for a great piece about a one-of-a-kind tour and artist! I highly recommend that you pick this up...every issue of Uncut has a lot of great stuff in it, but this month's is packed almost beyond belief.
John Lennon is on the cover and there's an incredible article about the first solo recordings and the breakup of The Beatles. Too much there to even try to synopsize, but one fascintating item is that Andy Stephens, the recording engineer for these sessions, is now the manager for Susan Boyle!?
There's an equally great article about Miles Davis and the recording of Bitches Brew. Includes lots of good inside stuff, especially about Miles and Hendrix, and there's a picture of Miles at Jimi's funeral which is quite moving.
Also has very good articles about Glenn Branca, Devo (includes some good stuff about Neil) and a show at Crystal Palace Bowl from Bob Marley's last tour. And of course, the usual great reviews and other articles that Uncut always has.
Finally there is "50 More Great Lost Albums" as chosen by readers of the magazine. Neil makes this list as well, coming in at #36 for his contributions to the soundtrack of Where The Buffalo Roam. The second Crosby & Nash album Wind On The Water is #48 on the list, and there are also albums by Johnny Cash, Carl Wilson, Alex Chilton, Gene Clark and Aretha Franklin, just to name a few.
Some of the rankings seem just a little bit suspect, with Dylan (Columbia's so long it's been good to know ya spoiler album) coming in at #1 while Sonny Sharrock's last and possibly best album Ask the Ages comes in at #14. Produced by Bill Laswell and featuring Pharoah Sanders and Elvin Jones, it's in my top ten all time list. Check it out sometime, especially the Coltrane homage "Many Mansions".
But anyway, as I'm fond of saying this is just my opinion. The overall list is superb and highlights many tremendous albums. Another A plus piece from Uncut, and a truly awesome issue...and the CD that's included also has lots of great new music from Los Lobos, Peter Case, The Gaslight Anthem and many others. Hope that you get a chance to enjoy it!
The show on Saturday night was, in a word....EPIC, SPECTACULAR AND SCARY GOOD (ok more than 1, but then how does one descibe Neil in a word?!!) in terms of setlist, sound, Neil's playing and singing, and audience reaction to it all. I've seen Neil only 6 times (goin' back to the Riverboat and Massey) and this was, by far the very best he has been. I love the small venue shows with lots of feeling, giving and receiving.
Folks in Winnipeg are in for something really SPECIAL tonite!!
Thank you Neil, we are always happy to welcome you back home!! Come again Soon!!
Really enjoyed Neil's show in Calgary, especially at such a small venue. Last saw him in 1983 and he only seems to get better with age. Best tunes of the night -Down by the River, Cinammon Girl, Cortez the Killer and Old Man! Only complaint is the lack of interaction / chit chat with the audience. Rob
