Neil Young Concert Reviews - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, July 23, 2010
"Walk with Me" - Neil Young - Edmonton AB, Canada July 2010
From Edmonton Journal: Neil Young brings mix of new and classic to Edmonton By Tom Murray:
"Some artists are just so impossibly weighted down with reverence that you hardly know where to begin as a music writer.
Not that someone like Neil Young would care for the idea of being revered; he’s ignored just about every rule of the careerist rocker, disdaining a commercial path while happily testing his fans with any number of strange musical detours.
He invariably returns to what his core audience likes best, though; his first offerings at the Jube weren’t in any way a test for the 2,500 in attendance. They were three of most beloved acoustic song, My My, Hey Hey, Tell Me Why, and Helpless, played close to the recorded versions. This was classic rock Neil Young, still possessing that unearthly voice, though down an octave or so on certain numbers.
A high point for many at his electric concert last year was a grinding, loud, near hallucinatory Cortez the Killer; some might debate it, but Cortez stood as a memorable highlight Friday night as well. By and large ignoring rhythm, he let the song float on whammy bar sustain, banging the body of his guitar, falling into near silence between verses. At moments he sounded not unlike Rowland S. Howard, guitarist for The Birthday Party, twisting short, barbed wire leads through gently played, distorted chords.
This is why he’s revered by so many, the stamp of weirdness that keeps Young from being just elevator muzak for baby boomers. Just when you think he’s going to stroll down memory lane, he sits you with something strange, forcing you to reconsider a song you’ve heard a thousand times.
Neil Young will be performing tonight at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Special guest Bert Jansch will open concert.

I know you're busy with working, working, working for a better planet...
Did Neil play
'Four Strong Wind' in this concert of Edmonton ?
I don't think so. But he did play Peaceful Valley.
He played Four Strong Winds in April of 2009 in Edmonton, but this is a different tour.. different songs.
I did not go to last night's concert, because I'm living in Ontario at the moment, but Edmonton is my home, and a lot of my friends went. As expected, they really enjoyed it. I caught the same tour in Buffalo in May, so I know what it was like. But I really wish I was there last night in Edmonton!!
Good music last night. Was (again) a different Young once the show got rolling . . . the solo thing was interesting. Cortez the Killer - yeah, excellent. I liked alot of the newer and odder material. And "I Believe In You" with piano was sublime. His voice - I didn't notice the octave lower etc as I was floored by the (yes) "unearthly" sound that he still projects.
And Jansch was fabulous; I would have dropped a C-note just to see Jansch play alone. I've tried for 35 years to catch that cat. Incredible.
Loved every minute. So glad Neil came to Edmonton. He looks great and sounds great. ♥
Amazing show. Such a different setlist than his last show last April. Loved the new tunes.
After the show Neil came out in the parking lot area in the back and met a a bunch of fans, probably 40 or more. He signed everything for us, vinyl, cds, etc. We were told no photos but he did willfully sign stuff and was smiling the whole time, very nice, chatty, and seemed to be enjoying it. This was my first time meeting Neil Young, a lifelong dream. I'm glad I got a chance to shake his hand and thank him and tell him that he is my hero.
Was Old Man or Heart of Gold played in Edmonton?
Thx,
Sugarmtn
Canadians are so much more respectful of Neil than people from the U.S. I'm movin' to Canada, man.
had a great time seeing neil on friday night, such a differnet experiance seeing him alone in a small venue then with 15,000 in an arena. hitchhiker, cortez were the highlights for me. neil had a couple technical issues during the show but it didnt affect the performance and during walk with me he yelled to the tech i think "i can t hear a thing" while waving his guitar in front of the amps, he then left the guitar up against one with the feedback going and stepped back to the mic and sang the last line walk with me two more times without his guitar.
ps sugarmtn says he played heart of gold during the encore he did not he only played old man and WWM.
jason in edmonton
Old Man was played, no Heart of Gold
Matt, you're welcome here anytime man!
