Well, we've posted quite a variety of strange things over the years but this is one of the odder ones for sure.

We recall having a audio cassette tape of this but completely forgot about it. We seemed to recall that Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young were on the This Is Tom Jones TV program but didn't realize that Tom Jones actually performed with CSNY on the song "Long Time Gone".

From our friends up on Sugar Mountain come the details of the recording on 1969-09-06 at ABC Studios in Los Angeles, California. CSNY also performed "You Don't Have To Cry".

Recorded just weeks after their 2nd public performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, CSNY were a very hot act. And Tom Jones appears to have wanted to get in on the deal.

So strange bedfellows indeed.

Maybe not as strange, but Tom Jones performed at the 28th Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert in October 2014.

From comments on our original 2012 post, the version of LONG TIME GONE aired was a sloppily edited combination of (at least) two takes. (thanks asg!)

I would put money on it that Tom Jones's pot was probably much better than what David was smoking at the time, square or not.

The only difference i could tell at the different concerts was that the ladies threw their undies at TJ while he was performing; the ladies weren't wearing anything underneath at CSN&Y.

This clip is a great example of that 'synergy' that can sometimes (not always) occur when disparate musical backgrounds 'jam'.

Especially during the 'first exposure' between two different types each musician is 'pushed' or 'pulled' into a musical groove they've never exactly been in before. Something new results from the fusion - and the musicians know it on the spot. Rare, fleeting, exceptionally interesting to watch/hear. 

I've seen, and know the music of all these folks - never conceived of them being together - expands ones horizons.

Comment of the Moment: "When I Watch You Sleeping"

The Comment of the Moment is on the Neil Young song "When I Watch You Sleeping" by Kimball:

Thrasher - needed to say - EVERY time I've listened to "When I Watch You Sleeping (Solo)", I've cried, hard.

Its such a pure heartfelt song from Neil, none closer to the heart, from the heart. Love, and all that has been enjoyed and regretted, in one beautiful potent song. To me, this is what its like to have Neil's music in my life, to get it and resonate deeply, to the point of giving me more life than I could possibly have experienced without his soundtracks to make life even more beautiful and real than it would have otherwise been. His music gets to me; and none deeper than "When I Watch You Sleeping (Solo)".

The Year of The Horse Trailer

Just for fun, here's the trailer for the film 'The Year of The Horse '.

The concert film "Year of The Horse" from the 1996 tour, directed by Jim Jarmusch, is certainly a worthy successor to the classic "Rust Never Sleeps" with the addition of interviews and behind the scenes footage along with the raging, stomping, raw Crazy Horse style.

Featuring a several epic jams including "Slip Away" and "Big Time" which clock in over 15 minutes each, the live material reveals the magic nature of what happens onstage in the "huddle".

In an interview with Crazy Horse and Neil Young:

Neil Young: I love that movie and I think it is a perfect add-on for the "Year of The Horse" record.

You can really feel the personal view of a film maker, and above all the movie is about the band. It's more than a simple story, it's an impression, a succession of feelings. I had the idea of doing this movie - I like this kind of stuff and I like to have a camera with me, but Jim made it possible.



Poncho: I always thought that that the story of Crazy Horse was less interesting than his music. It's certainly the more successful movie on Neil Young and Crazy Horse, but for me, this film is just touching on this topic. With all due respect to Jim and his work, I think that the first song in the movie shows more than what you can see in the following hour. So I liked this short movie, but I wouldn't like people to stick to this cinematographic view. It happened so many things in that band, that no one, as a movie maker, will be able to relate."

A Rapper Covers "Old Man": The Story Behind The Music

Here's Canadian rapper Redlight King sampling Neil Young's "Old Man".

We had to admit we were a bit intrigued because we've heard a hundred covers already. But we highly recommend checking this out in yet another genre-bending interpretation of the Neil classic.

There's also an interesting backstory here as well. Apparently, Neil's management refused to grant the rights to the song until Neil stepped in personally.
