Video of the Moment: CSNY w/ Tom Jones - "Long Time Gone" (1969)

"Long Time Gone"
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young w/ Tom Jones (1969)

Well, we've posted quite a variety of strange things over the years but this is one of the odder ones for sure.

We recall having a audio cassette tape of this but completely forgot about it. We seemed to recall that Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young were on the This Is Tom Jones TV program but didn't realize that Tom Jones actually performed with CSNY on the song "Long Time Gone".

A YT comment: "Stills never sang better, Crosby never looked happier, and Young never looked so serious. That Tom Jones magic"

From our friends up on Sugar Mountain come the details of the recording on 1969-09-06 at ABC Studios in Los Angeles, California. CSNY also performed "You Don't Have To Cry".

Recorded just weeks after their 2nd public performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, CSNY were a very hot act. And Tom Jones appears to have wanted to get in on the deal.

So strange bedfellows indeed.

Maybe not as strange, but Tom Jones performed at the 28th Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert in October 2014.

28th Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert Lineup
October 25-26, 2014
Shoreline Ampitheatre

From comments on our original 2012 post, the version of LONG TIME GONE aired was a sloppily edited combination of (at least) two takes. (thanks asg!)

Another priceless comment from Mother Nature on the Run:

I would put money on it that Tom Jones's pot was probably much better than what David was smoking at the time, square or not.

The only difference i could tell at the different concerts was that the ladies threw their undies at TJ while he was performing; the ladies weren't wearing anything underneath at CSN&Y.
And another comment from  RanWiz:

This clip is a great example of that 'synergy' that can sometimes (not always) occur when disparate musical backgrounds 'jam'.

Especially during the 'first exposure' between two different types each musician is 'pushed' or 'pulled' into a musical groove they've never exactly been in before. Something new results from the fusion - and the musicians know it on the spot. Rare, fleeting, exceptionally interesting to watch/hear.

I've seen, and know the music of all these folks - never conceived of them being together - expands ones horizons.

As Tom would say ... "'It's Not Unusual' ...

INTERVIEW: Stephen Stills on CSNY - "We were all quite full of ourselves" | Uncut + Deja Vu 50th Anniversary Streaming Now | NYA

Stephen Stills

In a recent interview, Graham Nash discussed the Deja Vu re-issue boxset and what it was like working with Neil Young.

Today, another  interview on the Deja Vu re-issue boxset and working with Neil Young, this time with Stephen Stills. Also, the full Deja Vu 50th Anniversary edition is now streaming on NYA (more below).

From Stephen Stills on CSNY: "We were all quite full of ourselves"  | Uncut by Peter Watts:

Uncut: How did Neil change the dynamic?

Stephen Stills: Neil was one of those who wanted us to sing it and play it at the same time and be done, and the first time you get it right – that’s the take. I like a bit more polish so I’m not actually that fond of these extra tracks in the reissue. I was thinking about this last night and for me it’s like seeing the mannequins undressed in the shop window. Why do you want to put these out there even though they sound great?

Isn’t there a raw honesty to them?

Yeah, if you say so.

For me it sounds like we’d just got the words correctly in the right order. Some of it is good. It was odd. I had a knee replacement last year so I was flat on my back while these were being collected and a bit distracted. They sent me MP3 files that sounded like rancid shit, the worst car radio on an AM setting. That was very hard for me to listen so I didn’t realise they had taken such a deep dive into my vault. They went on this excursion, it was like this archaeological dig, so when the final set finally turned up I was, “Wait, what’s all this?”

Neil has always been the smartest one of us, he gave us three songs and kept the rest.

He’s now put together his own archive over the years, and I found that quite clever actually. It’s what I was supposed to be doing but with one thing or another it went out the way. So I have mixed feelings. I’ve often got my foot stuck in my mouth so I don’t want to make too much of it.

But it’s nice to remember that time and this is very reflective of it.

Fans seem to always want more.

Well, they think they do.

Neil seems to release everything.

He releases everything in huge batches. I always thought it was excessive but he seems to do it very well. I’m happy for him and look forward to be playing with him now I am free to mix and mingle.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s Déjà Vu was the most-anticipated new album in America in 1970. More than 50 years later, it’s one of the most famous albums in rock history with legendary songs, including “Carry On” and “Teach Your Children,” that still resonate today.

Rhino will honor the intense creative journey that led to this milestone album with an expansive 4-CD/1-LP collection that includes a pristine version of the original album on both 180-gram vinyl and CD, plus hours of rare and unreleased studio recordings that provide incredible insight into the making of the record.

DÉJÀ VU: 50TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION will be available from Rhino on May 14 for $99.98. Presented in a 12 x 12 hardcover book, the collection comes illustrated with rarely seen photos from the era and annotated by writer/filmmaker Cameron Crowe, whose revealing liner notes recount the making of the album through stories told by the people who were there, including David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young.

In the new anniversary edition, the album’s original 10 tracks are joined by 38 more to add nearly two-and-a-half hours of music that includes demos, outtakes, and alternate takes – most of which are previously unreleased. Among them is “Know You Got To Run,” the first song the quartet recorded during its first session on July 15 at the house Stills was renting from Peter Tork in Studio City.

Other unreleased highlights include the demo for Crosby’s “Almost Cut My Hair”; Stills’ outtake for “Bluebird Revisited”; and Young’s alternate version of “Helpless” featuring harmonica. Also making its debut on the set is a version of “Our House” that features Nash singing with the song’s inspiration, Joni Mitchell.

In April 2021 Gram Nash spoke to me about the 50th anniversary edition of Déjà Vu. “The technology is much better now and you can hear the impact of it on this. You can hear the magic. It’s a great piece of music.”

David Crosby on CSNY in 2014 | Rolling Stone

David Crosby
(Click photo to enlarge)

Earlier this week, we posted links over to some recent interviews with Graham Nash and Stephen Stills. And -- as usual -- any comment by C, S, or N, about Y manage to fire some folks up over in the comments threads.

We must say, the relationship of CSN&Y is -- in the parlance of our times -- quite complicated.

So here's another brick in the CSN&Y wall. From David Crosby Reveals Details of Solo Tour and CSNY 1974 DVD | Music News | Rolling Stone by Andy Greene:
"I don't know what's going to happen with my summer," he says. "It will either by CSN or, and I hesitate to even say it, but the Bridge School Benefit went well the other week, so possibly CSNY. But that's a complete unknown quantity until I hear something from Neil."

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young played their first gig since 2006 at the Bridge School Benefit in late October. Did Young bring up the possibility of a tour at any point? "No," says Crosby. "He was, as usual, concentrating on the music. But you know Neil, he's got his antennas up. He is paying attention. He may not look like it, but he is. The shows felt really good, so that bodes well. We have no idea though. I stress that. I repeat that. We have no idea."

The quartet performed Neil Young's new song "A Singer Without a Song" as well as at the new Stephen Stills composition "Don't Want Lies" at the show. "It made me really happy," says Crosby. "I love Neil's new song. I thought it was beautiful. Graham [Nash] has a new song he wrote with my son James called "Burning for the Buddha" that's so much fun to do onstage. There's life in this. A person's work is the window into their soul. If you see new work, quality work, coming out of us, then we are not dead."

One might think that Neil Young will have to determine whether or not he wants to do a CSNY tour next year sometime within the next few months so organizers have time to book it. "That's sensible and logical," says Crosby. "But that doesn't always apply with Neil. It would be nice to know sometime soon, but I can't torture myself about it . . . I would dearly love for it to happen, but it's not up to me. I'm not in charge. I do think there is more music to be made, really good music. I love it when it's just the four of us onstage with acoustic guitars, a piano and a pump organ. That's because it becomes all about the songs. It really strips it all down."
2014 Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young tour? 1974 tour box set?

In the parlance of our times -- it's all so complicated.

FLASHBACK: The Actual Honest to God Reunion of Crosby Stills & Nash

"The Actual Honest to God Reunion of Crosby Stills & Nash"
Rolling Stone by Cameron Crowe - June 2, 1977

(Click photo to enlarge)

With the reunion of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young now confirmed for the 2013 27th Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert, we've been getting a bit nostalgic lately.

Here is a Rolling Stone interview from June 2, 1977 The Actual Honest to God Reunion of Crosby Stills & Nash by Cameron Crowe. (Via 4waysite. Thanks!) Lots of interesting comments.

And here's the obligatory Neil content:
They [CSN] assume that Neil Young knows exactly what they’re up to in Miami, using two months of studio time that Young himself wanted to book. But there has been no communication. He is spoken of in friendly but distant terms. Young views CSNY as an occasional marker in his own career, but CSNY comes first for the others. “I love singing with those guys,” he said in 1975, “but CSNY tends to get too big. Too many people attach too much importance to them. I enjoy being able to visit, but I want to avoid people thinking, ‘Oh, there’s Neil Young from CSNY.’”

“At this point,” Crosby says, “I don’t know how to deal with my relationship to Neil at all. The last time the four of us were together, the psychic balance in the room, the level of trust, love or friendship was like”…Crosby whistles…”real strange.”

That was last May, and the room was the very same Criteria Sound Studios. Recording sessions by the Stills-Young Band had reached an impasse. Young called Crosby to see about giving CSNY another shot. Crosby and Nash, close to finishing their own album, Whistling down the Wire, in Los Angeles, flew to Miami Beach. It was a disastrous move. Besides a lack of material and some disagreement over the approach, there were rapidly approaching deadlines. A summer-long Stills-Young Band tour was scheduled to begin in June, and Crosby and Nash were already late delivering their own album. They finally had to rush back to L.A. to wrap it up, leaving Stills and Young to work on the CSNY album until they returned. Instead, the album reverted to a Stills-Young project. Crosby and Nash were not invited back to Florida, and their vocals were wiped off the tracks to make room for others.

Crosby was livid at the time. “I have nothing but contempt for those two,” he said then. “I refuse to be on call for them any longer.” Now, he can rationalize the incident: “Everything was wrong. I wish to fuck, man, that I had not felt so long an enmity for those cats over that.”

In the end, the Stills-Young tour fell apart after a month. Crosby and Nash played throughout the summer, and the incredible irony occurred: the two harmony singers, the leftover pieces of the old group, outsold the Stills-Young album (Long May You Run).
Ahhh. Those were the days. So much water under and over the bridge. What a saga.

Photo of the Moment: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - 1974

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Wembley Stadium, London, 1974-09-14

A rather most awesome Photo of the Moment of Stephen Stills getting air with CSNY in 1974.

From the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert at Wembley Stadium, London,England, 1974-09-14.

Back 2010, we reported that a box set of CSNY's 1974 tour was in the works.

The news set off quite a reaction with numerous comments on memories from CSNY's 1974 tour. In many ways, the tour marked the end of an era as well as the beginning of a new era. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's 1974 summer tour was unprecedented in many ways -- not the least of which was a pioneering mega huge sound system able to blast tens of thousands at outdoor stadiums. The Bill Graham produced spectacle went on to usher in the massive rock and roll extravaganzas that so many other acts would later follow.

Alas, a hoped for 2011 release was never seen.

From a 2010 article in Billboard.com:
[Graham Nash] hopes to put the finishing touches on a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young live album from the quartet's legendary 1974 tour for a hoped-for spring 2011 release. Nash and archivist Joel Bernstein are putting the set together from multi-track recordings of nine concerts, and listening to them has shown Nash that 'we were really a fine band. It's very obvious when you play the tracks that we're listening to each other, not stepping on each other's toes, not overblowing. It's really, really good.'

Nash adds that Neil Young, himself an exacting archivist, has 'give me basically carte blanche' to put the set together. 'He knows me. He trusts me. He feels I can do this. He will be very involved, of course, because I'm not mixing anything finally until Neil's heard it and approves -- the same with David [Crosby] and Stephen.'

After the '74 show is done, Nash plans on to move to a 1970 CSNY show from the Fillmore East in New York city, as well as Crosby Nash shows from 1970 and 1993. He's also waiting for final permissions from some famous musical friends for a Crosby Nash collaborative album to benefit the Children's Defense Fund, which he hopes will come out in 2011 as well.

So will we ever hear these releases???

More on the reunion tour of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in 1974.

VIDEO: CSNY w/ Tom Jones on "Long Time Gone" (1969)

"Long Time Gone"
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young w/ Tom Jones (1969)

Well, we've posted quite a variety of strange things over the years but this is one of the odder ones for sure.

We recall having a cassette tape of this but completely forgot about it. We seemed to recall that Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young were on the This Is Tom Jones TV program but didn't realize that Tom Jones actually performed with CSNY on the song "Long Time Gone".

From our friend on Sugar Mountain come the details of the recording on 1969-09-06 at ABC Studios in Los Angeles, California. CSNY also performed "You Don't Have To Cry".

Recorded just weeks after their 2nd public performance at the Woodstock Festival, CSNY were a very hot act. And Tom Jones appears to have wanted to get in on the deal.

So strange bedfellows indeed.
