Quite a reaction to the news that a CSNY 1974 Tour Box Set is in the works.
Unfortunately, it turns out the excitement might be quite premature. Archives Guy responded with:
For a bit of clarity on all of this-
This project is real and currently in production.
The release date and content are still undetermined at this time.
As some of you recall in your comments, this was very memorable tour and the outstanding mixes on this project should flood you with great memories.
It sounds GREAT!
-Archives Guy
Nevertheless, that did not damp enthusiasm for the project with lots of folks posting tour memories here on TW, Steve Hoffman Forums, Wilco's Via Chicago, our Facebook Wall | ThrashersWheatNeverSleeps and Rust.
From Steve Hoffman Forums by Yardbird:
I saw them on their reunion tour at the Capital Center in DC and it was one of the best concerts I've been to.
The DC crowd was attentive and appreciated their wooden music as much as their electric. It was like attending several concerts in one as they played together, then split up to play individually or as a duo (Crosby & Nash) and then finished together. It was a long concert, but awesome. As stated by an earlier poster, Neil Young was clearly the star of that night, when he played a solo set near the show's end. I hope they include something from the DC show.
I am definitely looking forward to this release!
Here's another recent comment:
Maybe the CSNY '74 project is another example of Neil being a good friend to his old pals.
Neil's got this whole production team set up and that probably makes the process a lot more profitable and easier. With music sales down so dramatically, musicians who have enjoyed very comfortable lives now find their annuity cash flow streams at risk. The best way to make money these days as a musician other than touring is through specialty sets like this one.
The fact is, evidenced from this thread, there's real demand for this product and perhaps Neil's helping these guys keep the cash spicket running. Neil hated the TFA tour and the album but we're begging him to bring it back and if he did I wouldn't fault him, I'd say despite his misgivings he's giving fans what they want. Its not unlike the archives MP3 download where the team broke their back to produce a Blue Ray version but some of us wanted to also have it on our ipods.
Maybe CSNY '74 is right behind the TFA tour in terms of his hated tours but he's probably trying to be a gracious friend and feed the fans what they want. Otherwise, its hard to understand why his team would focus on this project when the could fast track Archives II, toast, Truck show on blue ray, ect...
Undoubtedly, some are concerned with Neil and his team keeping the eye on the ball making new music and not going on some random journey through the past again. But it's been well established that you can't please everyone all the time...

I often wonder, when I see a pitcher throw a no hitter, or an athlete obtain a gold medal,or read a set list and see these people on stage, what makes them who they are?
They are very special people.
And the world would be a lot less
interesting place without them.
Uh,Thrash?You forgot Traces.

I'll be pleasently surprised if every Neil song played on that tour is included in the set anyhow. As far as Neil 74' goes me and thousands of other's are hopeing and a prayin' for Bottom Line show.I listened to songs from that show on youtube one night.I think it mighta even been the whole show.?INCREDIBLE!!

The new Album is going to be GREAT, AND I hope he comes th the Garden in New York, I really want to see this show, as do my Brother, and Sister, And can't forget Mom the most important,I have seen Neil at least 15 times, but nothing like this, hope all that got to see him know how lucky they are!
Archives guy or anyone else
When do you think we can expect the next release either vol 1. or a performance series? things seemed to have dried up.
I second that setlist
I was at the July 19th show in Kansas City in 1974. I was 16. Way too young to be snobby about music. I was blown away. They played for hours. In all sorts of configurations, sometimes just a couple of people, sometimes all of them, then a solo. I was mezmerized. First time I ever saw Neil live. I have been obsessed ever since. It will be amazing to hear the concert that changed my life!! When they broke up, it was Neil I followed. Have been following ever since. I would have never guessed how far this journey would take me. Best trip of my life. Sandy Horne
I wouldn't say that Archives guy is refuting anything. I guess that the Crosby statement that it will be out by the end of the year could be premature, but it could also be spot on. Seeing that Nash has supposedly been at work on this thing for a bit of time now, I can see it coming out fairly soon.
My theory, which I base on absolutely nothing, is as follows...
Neil requested that Nash put this thing together, right? I'm guessing that Neil didn't want to slog through the shows looking for good versions of stuff, so he had Nash do it, told him to get it together for a release, and then pass some stuff over for the next archives. whatever. I'm probably way off. but i'm just glad that this is on the way. very pumped.
Hi Thrasher, Archives Guy and everybody
at the moment I know that they
recorded for sure the following shows: New York Nassau Coliseum 14&15 August, Landover 19 & 21 August, Chicago 27,28 & 29 August & London UK 14 Sept 1974. The video stuff could be comin from Washington or Wembley but all we know that CSNY were not happy with the English performance at that time...so we would have at the nd, eight shows to try to understand what stuff they're goin to include it...but I don't want to 'cause other discussions..but my next request is: why a 1974 video when we (they ) have the Fillmore East 1970 gigs on film?? They recorded on video two nights: 2 & 5 June 1970. If They release the 1970 shows goin multi-platinum in advance!!! Stefano
Only 36 years later...
my guess is The Bottom Line 74 show will ultimately end up as an Archives release.
On YouTube, the audio of the performance had been posted for all the world to see...now, the videos have been pulled "due to a copyright claim."
Funny, but Neil doesn't own the copyright to that bootleg.....but i bet he's the one who requested the songs get pulled.
hmmmm
Not to pour hot water on the excitement, or say I wouldn't consider buying these, or trying to put anyone down,
I also love Joni too but this video proves it .... CSNY and/or CSNY&M does nothing for Neil's songs ... each of these musicians were world class in '74 but Neil's music is best when its done in a simple fashion, all these stars weigh it down and detract. I think Joni subtracts big time and I'm a huge Joni fan .. actually she's a lot like Neil, also she's best on her own, she's one of the all time best talents ... I will say though that Stills has an awesome jam on this version of Helpless ... its too bad he wasn't able to stick around like Neil, Stills was the real thing
Thanks Stefano for your real informative comment.I'm a little perplexed about this wonderful operation. I don't think that Neil'll agree about this before his Archives release. The CSNY shows presented many rare On The Beach and Homegrown songs, the greater part unreleased yet or rarely performed. I'm afraid that this release somehow can deplete the Archives. So we'll see.
Andrea."So Tired"
My first Neil show, first stop on the tour in Seattle. Ben Fong-Torres reviewed ths show for Rollin Stone, he described it beautifully, from the from the opening Love the One Your With, to the crowd huddled on the floor during the acoustic set, to the lights on finale, sometime after midnite. He concluded that they 'were in it for the music', and 36 years later, I can still hear most of that show in my memories.
If Hawaiian Sunrise/Homefires/Love Art Blues showed up on this, I'd be damn excited.
