Neil Young Announces New Album: 'Second Song'

RECORDING and LISTENING

Neil Young has announced another new studio album titled 'Second Song' and recorded with the Chrome Hearts.

On Times Contrarian | Neil Young Archives, Neil writes that the album, with eight total songs, contains three written in 1963, which have remained unreleased. Neil explains the creative process beginning several months ago when he spent several days composing new lyrics and melodies in the early morning hours. In early March, the recording sessions began under a full moon at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La Studios in Malibu.

During the two days of recording with the Chrome Hearts, they recorded five new songs.  A search of the archives discovered previously unreleased early material.

The final mixing and mastering were completed in April under a full moon. In another statement on NYA titled "Moon To Moon,", Neil writes that the new music is a "special gift" that he "really feels".
RECORDING and LISTENING

4-21-26
Recording 'Second Song', my next studio album for Reprise records, was a lifetime experience. First, the music was breathing. Every song of the seven released on this album is straight form the heart.
Second, we tried to do something we have never done: record digital and analog masters at the same time.
We did this so we could show the difference we know and believe in, my friends and I. Analog was the beginning, and it never sounded better. Hi res digital is a clear second best. We are finishing the two versions and will release them both. The Digital hi res master and the Analog Vinyl. You can hear the difference, instantly. They are both beautiful if the song is. One is as deep as life. One is the highest quality counterfeit copy. If you are interested in the sound you can disappear into and lose yourself… over repeated listenings, Analog.

I made records like that in the beginning. I miss the quality people today hardly ever get a chance at hearing. Music is infinitely deep. Museum quality sound is analogue.

Try comparing these if you get a chance. For true analog playback, there can be no digital components in the player or amplifier or speakers. I do hope you enjoy the music no matter how you listen. We made it for all of us.

LOVE
Neil

Neil Young on NYA: "I'm so happy with my new album!"

Some good news from Neil Young on his recent recording sessions at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La Studios.

Recall that earlier this month we learned that Neil Young & Chrome Hearts had been in the studio with "8 songs recorded".

Now in a response to a letter from Wendy, Neil seems quite pleased.

"I'm so happy with my new album!

I honestly can't remember ever feeling so good about what we recorded. Everything happened so naturally… Chrome Hearts were totally in the groove. Songs! I'm really looking forward to sharing it with you all as soon as possible.

Songs…"
Nice to see the change in Neil's mood. Also, recall that in early March, Neil wrote:
"Politics today is sad and depressing for me. I can’t do it anymore."
And in other Neil Young news of late, the tracklist for the album "As Time Explodes" by Neil Young w/Chrome Hearts  has been revealed for this year's Record Store Day on April 18.

Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts Are In The Studio + Comment of the Moment

Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts
Charlotte, NC - August 8, 2025
 (Click photo to enlarge)

Neil Young & Chrome Hearts have been in the studio, with "8 songs recorded", per a response to a letter on  Neil Young Archives.

Presumably recorded on the last full moon -- the Blood Moon -- no additional details have emerged, other than Neil is not happy. Writing on NYA | T-C, Neil Young says:
“Folks, I am so hurt for this country.

Politics today is sad and depressing for me. I can’t do it anymore. I can go out and demonstrate my feelings about it. We have the worst president in the history of our country. Every day, a bad TV show produced by DJT [President Donald J. Trump] is what we get.

Now, thankfully, once again, I’m in the studio recording a new album with the chrome hearts.

I love the songs and the feelings of life and love. Music is. So far, we have eight new songs. They make me feel.”
Which brings us to a  Comment of the Moment from TeekiesPlace:

Neil’s been talking about how music makes him 'feel' lately and how it’s got him back in the studio.

You have to wonder if that fan letter he shared with the track link at the bottom had something to do with the inspiration? It's an upbeat country-rocker that even name-checks his old friends Willie and Waylon from Farm Aid.

Makes you wonder.

Here is the link he left in: https://www.reverbnation.com/wendyellenwarren/song/29254035-cheap-champagne
Thanks for sharing TeekiesPlace!  It does make you wonder, doesn't it?

Actually, Neil has made it quite a habit of his to make us be "Wonderin' " most of the time.

Afterall, recall just last summer when Neil Young invited President Trump to attend his concerts.

And in other Neil Young news of late, the tracklist for the album "As Time Explodes" by Neil Young w/Chrome Hearts  has been revealed for this year's Record Store Day on April 18.

 LOVE EARTH 2026 UK/EU TOUR
Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts

On Neil Young Archives Times-ContrarianNeil responds to a letter from Michael about the tour cancellation:
“... everything is OK.

All is good . Just needed a break. Listening to my body.”
In another letter from Justin, Neil says they will consider Bridgeport, CT for a concert. (thanks Road Dawg!)

"No promises though!!!"

Good ol' Neil ... always hedging those statements.  Some things will never change.

Our guidance is to go ahead and make your summer vacation plans.  Once those reservations are completed, a summer tour will then be announced, per "Neil's Law".  For somewhere on EARTH.  Maybe North America?  Or maybe Fall?  Or 2027? Maybe w/ Chrome Hearts?

Let's make a real "hippie dream" happen.

Neil Young Patron ZOOM Call Update: New Songs & Archives Volume 4 Release

Neil Young

Here is an update from Neil Young's Patron call earlier today. Many thanks to Greying Rider for his excellent reports via TW comments.

Neil Young on Patron ZOOM

image via Rusted Moon

Hello Everybody,

Notes from the Patron call:

--------

Neil looks fantastic.

Says it’s the largest group of Patrons ever. May offend some people and get that number down!

Phil Baker reads questions. Zeke, Frank Gironda and John O are also not he call.

Will Neil play in USA in 2026?

Some possibilities. Focused on making new album because he’s got new songs.

New outtakes in the works?

Yes in the work all the time. Neil calls himself a giant outtake. Working on them all the time.
There will a list on the NYA music page with all the outakes and links to find them.

Does he have any ideas to mobilize and galvanize the collective musicians to stand against the Trump?

No ideas. Every American should use their conscience to stand up for beliefs and not be intimidated.

Are there plans for another benefit show in 2026?

Probably.

Neil are you writing new songs?

6 news songs right now.

Please tell us about your new songs.

Reads a verse of a new song. Sound like decent lyrics.

What does he think of the atmos mixes?

Go to Apple for these. Neil likes the original mixes and what he did in the first place. What the Archives are about. Niko’s atmos mixes are great and Vol 4 is full of them.

Asked to say a few words about Judy Greenberg

Neil says she was a wonderful person and a great supporter of his music. Life is sometimes a rough ride but she had to go. Zeke chips in to say she was the first subscriber. Neil says she was a one in a million. She loved music and will always be around.

Archives Volume 4 release date?

No release date. But there is a lot more information and then he (quickly!) reels off a list. [This is what I got. Please add anything I missed or got wrong in the comments.]

  • ’87 Crazy Horse with Blue Notes
  • Freedom sessions’
  • Raggedly Glorious (3 sessions)
  • Deep in the Valley of Hearts. New album
  • Natural Beauty
  • Philadelphia
  • Booker T & MGs
  • Sleeps with Angels film with Briggs
  • Mirrorball film
  • Year of the Horse with cool version of Sedan Delivery
  • Amazing Trocadero from ’97 with CH
  • 97-99 Silver and Gold
  • Catalyst
  • Ocean Way
  • Live album from the WiIltern (Joh Hanlon not listed to yet).
  • Greendale. Return and Vicar Street. Vicar street video

Ever recoded a song singing a song in another language?

Not that I know of.

How is Canary getting on?

Last 50 pages. Final edits. Getting ready to do art (watercolor painting). End of this year. Maybe 2027. Working on it since 2017. Sci fi. Quite a story.

What in pipeline that most excited about?

All the same to Neil. Like the new songs. One called ”The Second Song”. Woke up with the melody in his head. Thinks must have existed already and so wrote new lyrics to it.

Any chance we will get a Neil Young biopic film?

Says he hopes not! Does not know how you can do that while still alive. Got some people he knows working on something but does not want to get involved. Wants to make a record.

Will independent venues make a recovery like vinyl?

Has a go at Amazon.

How is the train set?

Fantastic. One of his greatest endeavors. Art of creating things form real things.

How determine set lists for every show to show?

He does it by feel. Write down the setlist before the show and then deviate from it.

Zeke mentions that Chrome Hearts can play anything he pulls out of the hat.

Question about if he will organize a show to mobilize musicians.

Neil’s not going to organize, he follows the muse. Other people can do this better.

How does it feel to be 80?

Feels good. Thought he’d be scared until he was 80. What the heck? Who cares? A lot of things don’t matter that used to matter. Likes to stay physical. Walked 3 miles at 8,500 feet yesterday in his new shoes to not slide around on the ice.

How are Ralph and Billy?

Happy, healthy and well. Poncho too. Spoke to him last week. Played them the Trocadero disc. They loved the ‘new’ old stuff.

Trocadero has 7/8 songs that Neil hardly ever played with CH: Razor Love, Big Time.

How decide if play a song acoustic or electric?

Depends on how he feels. Some more fun acoustic and some electric. Admits not a good answer, he just makes things up on the go.

How has the Greenland free access gone?

Reaction has been good.

How feel about old classic songs?

If tired of it, then don’t play it. No rules. It’s like the wind, just comes and goes. Bob doesn’t plan what he plays. He plays what he feels like playing. Follows the muse to play how he wants, even if not recognizable.

What’s on the new live album?

First song to be released is Silver Eagle. And then Big Crime. Incredible version of Cortez from Bergen. Best version ever in his opinion because it came out different when he sang it. Stopped each verse a line early and let the verses sync into a big hodge podge. Tells a whole story from a new view.

Status of Tape Sessions log from Volume 3?

John says on his desk. Got a list last week.

When is Coastal coming to NYA?

Frank Girona says its on the way but Neil jokes that business gets crossed with art.

Law suit x Chrome Hearts?

Frank says worked out an arrangement but can’t comment otherwise. Neil will continue using the name.

Spoken to Stephen recently?

Yes, spoke last week. Keeps in touch with these guys.

-----------

That's all I got. It's good to share.

Peace. Toby

Micah Nelson on How He Got Neil Young Back on the Road | Rolling Stone

Micah Nelson Awaits:
DangerBird Descends for "The Hurricane"
August 10th - Richmond, VA
 (Click photo to enlarge)

"Neil’s in the zone, he’s riding the wave and he wants to keep riding it. So yeah, look out for us."  ~~ Micah Nelson

RS: The Chrome Hearts formed just a few months later. What was the spark that led to that?

Micah:  I knew how bummed out Neil was. He wasn’t feeling like making music. He was really sick. He was trying to get over that, and just get his energy back. And then he was really bummed out about what happened, and how it all went down. And that just kind of drained him a lot, and doused this flame.

I was like, “Is Neil fading away? This is unacceptable.” So I’d call him a lot and check in on him and remind him how he’s not old. I was like, “Do whatever you got to do, man. Take your time. I get it. Recharge. The tank has got to fill back up, and that can take time, but whenever you want to do the thing again, just call me up and I’m ready to go.”

I kept that idea going and reminding him that he didn’t play for four years, and he felt the rust. And then it took a few years once he started again to really, really get back in the groove.

He started with the solo [Coastal] tour, which was great. I think coming out from that hiatus and doing the Crazy Horse tour, we might not have lasted as long as we did even this time. He had to rebuild his energy.

I said to him, “Cory [McCormick] and Anthony [LoGerfo] from the Real, they’re down. I’ve talked to them.” And my brother [Lukas] … when that band went on their hiatus, he had written a letter to Neil just saying, “Hey, just because I’m not playing with these guys anymore, don’t feel weird about taking them out. They’re down to play with you, and they’re ready to go. So whenever you want to do it, don’t even hesitate.”
...

RS: The Chrome Hearts tour got off to a really strong start in Europe. Fans were buzzing from the first show in Switzerland.

Micah: Yeah, the audiences really brought a lot of positive supportive energy, and it kind of took us by surprise. We were really energized by the people, and that helped. The Europe tour was challenging in a lot of ways, travel wise and routing and buses breaking down. But the shows were super energizing and the audiences … just cheering at places you’re not even expecting them to. Those kind of things, they really light the way.

RS: The set list was full of surprises. I never thought I’d hear “Be the Rain” or “Sun Green Again,” let alone “Looking Forward” and “Name of Love” from the CSNY reunion albums.
Micah: That’s the other cool thing about the Chrome Hearts that I think keeps Neil energized. He knows he can do anything. Whatever era of Neil or whatever deep cuts, we can learn stuff pretty quick and deliver something. And especially because we have Spooner, it’s like we can do the Harvest Moon stuff in a way that really feels like the albums, and we can go delicate and we can get loud and ragged and do everything in between.
...

RS: A lot of fans followed the tour around. Did you see the same faces on the rail most every night?

Micah: Oh yeah. You start to recognize all the Rusties that are at every show. Some of them were in their twenties. It wasn’t just a bunch of old dudes in flannel shirts. We love those guys, of course, they’re fantastic. But especially in Europe, you had such a mix of different types of people, different age groups, and they’d be at every show.

...

RS: Do you think Neil will play in the States again next year? Overseas?

Micah: It’s really hard to say. We’ve talked about Japan. We’ve talked about we could do Europe again, and do places that we didn’t even hit last time, all new places. Same with the States. We’ve talked about a Gulf of Mexico tour. That would be fun. We didn’t really hit that region last time. There’s a lot of fans down there.

RS: Do you think Crazy Horse is ever going to play again or is Ralph just not up for it?

Micah: It’s hard to say. I didn’t realize how unhealthy he was when we were on tour. I know that drums are probably the least forgiving instrument when you’re getting older to keep up a certain level of power behind your playing. So I don’t know how much of it was that, and how much of it was just the fact that he was not well. But he’s a tough dude. I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back and was healthy and feeling like he could do it again. I can’t really say for sure. It’s really up to those guys and up to Neil.

RS: I really hope another Chrome Hearts tour happens next year. This one was really special.

Micah: My feeling is, barring disaster … Neil’s in the zone, he’s riding the wave and he wants to keep riding it. So yeah, look out for us.

UPDATE: Potential 2026 Gulf of Mexico Coastal Tour details?!

CONCERT REVIEW: Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts @ Hollywood Bowl - September 15 | Lefsetz Letter

Neil Young & Chrome Hearts
Hollywood Bowl - Sept. 15, 2025
Photo by Josh Martin | LiveforLiveMusic

Over the years, we've featured quite a few items from Bob Lefsetz and his Lefsetz Letter on Neil Young.

Why?

Simple. Because Bob Lefsetz "gets" Neil Young.

Here is a clip by Bob Lefsetz from Lefsetz Letter on Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts @ Hollywood Bowl on September 15:   (Thanks Mark from T.O. !)
“Doesn’t mean that much to me
To mean that much to you”

Neil Young is beyond image.

He’s lived so long, played so long, that it’s just him, sans trappings. As for his contemporaries…

They feel that they’ve got to convince the audience, overwhelm them, prove that they’ve still got it, are as important as they once were, still as meaningful, you should be wowed just to be in their presence.

But you’re not.
It’s creepy. So many have had plastic surgery. Because that’s the image they want to project, of them in their heyday, youthful, meaningful. They’re in stage outfits. And the production! The hi-def screens and the lasers, they’ve got to have the latest technology, to rationalize the ticket price if nothing else. It’s a veritable assault. By time it’s over you should feel worn out, like you’ve had the experience of a lifetime. But it’s nowhere close. It’s just old people playing old songs.

And then there’s Neil Young.

He seemed to be having fun.

Let’s be clear, he doesn’t need the money. He made that Hipgnosis deal, never mind the cash he’s already got. As for losing that money to his ex-wife… She died and probably left it to his children, so that kind of equalizes the equation. In any event, he’s got a ton of bread.

But what are you gonna do with all that money? Do you need a plane? How many houses can you buy, never mind needing to manage them.

So at the end of the day, you’re a musician.

Let’s be clear, so many are not, especially of the younger generation. They’re two dimensional constructs made to front the work of behind the scenes writers and producers. Did you see who’s headlining Coachella? Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber and Karol G? A big time concert promoter told me he was gonna retire because he was sick of presenting music he didn’t like. I give Paul Tollett credit for changing with the ages, forgetting the old acts that he used to hire to headline, but these acts? The attendees are not going so much to see them as to show off, shoot selfies of their outfits. There’s not much there. It’s showbiz, but more pre-Beatles than anything else.

So Neil Young shows up on stage in the clothing he wears off stage. This was a thing back when he broke through in 1970. But his contemporaries, they started showing up in tuxes at awards shows, wearing dignified clothing on stage. I can’t remember ever seeing Neil in a tux, he’s stayed true to himself when so many have not.

Lawsuit Filed Against Neil Young Over Band Name ‘Chrome Hearts’

Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts Drum Kit
 (Click photo to enlarge)

Per Billboard, a lawsuit has been filed against Neil Young over the band name ‘Chrome Hearts’ for trademark infringement by an apparel company.

The case, filed Thursday, comes from Chrome Hearts, a luxury brand that’s been using that name since the late 1980s for apparel, jewelry and accessories. Its lawyers say the name of Young’s new group – which debuted last year and released an album this summer – is clearly infringing the company’s “unique and valuable” name.
...

Earlier this summer, Chrome Hearts says it reached out to Young’s team with a letter “respectfully requesting” that he stop using the name. But they say those efforts were unsuccessful – meaning the company “is now forced to bring this complaint to protect its valuable and longstanding intellectual property rights.”

...
Representatives for Young and attorneys for Chrome Hearts did not immediately return requests for comment on Friday.

Here is a special report from the intrepid and oh so dependable John Kwit, our Thrasher's Wheat Intergalactic Music Correspondent via Chicago. Or, as John likes to put it: "[Normally] Mild Mannered Reporter for a Daily Metropolitan Newspaper"

Chicago, Milwaukee and the One That Got Away

As a native Chicagoan, I was blessed to see Neil Young at two recent shows.

Beating another well-known individual to the punch, Neil led an armed invasion of Chicago on August 27, “armed” that is, with his newly reunited Gretsch guitar from his days in his earliest-led band, The Squires, and his trusty Old Black Les Paul. It was all peace and love in the village. No arrests were made, no sandwiches were thrown and even the Chicago Stockyard hot dogs were locally sourced.

Taking in the Chicago show from the back of the house was fine, but nothing beats pit seating. Capturing a picture of Neil from out in the sticks just doesn’t cut it.

Actually, I was happy to be further back because, Truth Be Known, my mood was soured early-on by the antics of opening act Reverend Billy.

Call me an old prude, but I didn’t pay to see a striptease show. When the Reverend dropped his drawers to fully moon the audience for what seemed like an eternity I was wondering if I had wandered into an AC/DC show featuring knicker(less)-wearing Angus Young.

Reverend Billy

Having his bare derriere on the jumbotron didn’t help. Would it have been more appropriate if the Reverend popped on stage mid-song in Neil’s set, perhaps during Harvest Moon? I get it, half the population of the U.S. is mad at one individual in particular, and the other half of the population in general. But really, nudity at a Neil Young show? Reverend Billy’s songs were fine, and his backing band members were top notch. But what happened to a modicum of decorum, everyone getting along, Peace and Love? A different era I suppose.

Now that half of the audience here is riled up, let’s get to heart of the matter, Neil’s show. In a word, it was AWESOME.

I was walking to the same venue slightly over a year ago when word came down that the show was cancelled, so to finally see him return was a treat. You can read about the detailed setlist elsewhere

I liked his between song banter, especially his story on reacquiring his Squires Gretsch, and the fact that he pulled songs from so many eras & albums, including Greendale, CSNY’s Looking Forward and Silver Eagle off his new album Talking to the Trees

And I can’t end things without mentioning his newest song that he debuted in Chicago, Big Crime. It was catchy, got the audience’s attention, prompted lots of fist-raising and applause galore. Not the most complex song lyric-wise, but he made his point loud and clear. Since the song has debuted it has already been written about by Neil in his NYA Times Contrarian “paper” and has been put out on YouTube by Neil as a single.

Neil consults with Mark on stage audio

I cannot help but think about the quick turnaround that occurred back in May 1971 when Neil’s Ohio was recorded by CSNY, Johny Barbata and Calvin Fuzzy Samuel and released in record time soon after the tragedy at Kent State. After a late night el ride home, it was time for me to make plans for the next show two nights later in Milwaukee.

Before I go above the Cheddar Curtain to discuss the Milwaukee show I’d like to share a bit of personal info. I’ve been fan of all things CSNY since 1982. I’ve seen Neil and all members of that family tree in concert, movie debuts and book signings as many times as possible whenever they were within earshot of Chicago. I also had this thing with (courteously) obtaining autographs. And posters (sometimes resorting to outright thievery off of walls or poles). And magazines. And collecting live concerts. For the latter It was so much easier when things were only available on vinyl. The number of titles were limited and you could keep track of things by consulting hard print titles like Hot Wacks, Live Music Review or Ice Magazine. Who would have guessed that Neil would beat the bootleggers at their own game 5 decades on by sharing/selling an amazing treasure trove of material via NYA and his The Greedy Hand store?

I’ve been lugging around two items of considerable historical value (for me anyway) for over a decade in the hopes that Neil would sign them. A Decade is a long time and a great album, but I digress. So I heard from a friend, who had heard from a friend of a friend, that Neil was lodging here ( _______) before his Milwaukee show. So I went here (__________). Sure enough, his tour buses were there. I sat down on a bench a stone’s throw away and started to read. And read. And read. I was shocked to look up from my reading to see Neil heading straight toward me with a dog on a leash in each hand. I’m guessing his dogs were captivated by me sitting alone on the bench. Maybe it was the dog treats I had in my pocket. In any event, he came over with the dogs, and we chatted. It seemed like it was for an hour but in reality it was only a minute. Pleasantries were exchanged, tongue-tied words were uttered by me, and in the end, after taking a pass on signing an autograph, I told Neil I’d see him from the pit in a few hours. How many people can say they had the honor of chatting with Neil and petting his 2 dogs before the show? Yet another of life’s blessings thrown my way.

I met a bunch of nice folks waiting many hours in line before showtime. The Milwaukee Rail Club sounds like an appropriate title. Again, on a personal note, one of those Rail Club members had a medical issue arise during Neil’s last song so I’m hoping you are ok and that whatever ailed you was quickly diagnosed and taken care of.

Now about that show.

If the Chicago show was AWESOME, the Milwaukee show was MIND BLOWING. I’m struggling to put into words just how good it was. The setlist was slightly changed from the previous day. But I’m so glad he kept my personal favorites from Greendale (Be the Rain and Sun Green) two great rocking numbers. He expressed his feelings of loss and missing David Crosby prior to singing Looking Forward. The violent mayhem of Like a Hurricane and what I consider the penultimate song in his canon: Cowgirl in the Sand were unsurpassed. The latter song was like shaking a bottle of nitroglycerin. From the crack of the drums and opening chord it was a transcendental experience. I wish it would have lasted an hour. Back in my youth when running 26.2 mile marathons was my thing, I used to have a pre-race ritual where I would repeatedly blast Cowgirl in the Sand off of the Friends and Relatives CD in order to get my adrenaline in hyper-overdrive. That song never fails to deliver the goods for me, especially the opening passages prior to the vocals kicking in.

One last concert highlight: Harvest Moon. Remember the tire changing scene from the movie A Christmas Story? The cherub-faced little boy goes out in the darkness to help and knocks the lug nuts out of his father’s hands and we watch as they all fly up in slow motion before being scattered in the snow. It was a Christmas miracle the father found them. So what does that have to do with anything? Well, here I was singing along to Neil’s Harvest Moon, standing in the front row of the pit with my Manassas (Stephen Stills’ band, not the city in Virginia) t-shirt and USDA hat on from earlier in my dog-petting day. The song ends and Neil takes his harmonica rack off, pulls out the harmonica, looks at me, bends down and tosses the harmonica right to me. Did he remember me from earlier in day? Did he feel a bit of remorse for not signing an autograph? God only knows. And Neil.

Anyway about that harmonica: Well I’m convinced Neil’s crew must have lathered it up thick with linseed oil so that it would slide in and out of the rack just right. And that toss from Neil, I’m beginning to wonder if he was a flamethrowing baseball pitcher back in the day. Again, it was like that scene from A Christmas Story. The harmonica was flying right at me in slow motion, yet apparently traveling at 95 miles an hour at the same time. And who puts a spin on an object when tossing it? The harmonica was spinning wildly, rising, dipping, and simultaneously casting off linseed oil. Is there an end to this story? Yes. Another rail club member with very long arms was standing right next to me. Here comes the harmonica. The long arm fellow deflects the hallowed harmonica right before it would have been caught by yours truly. The hallowed harmonica hits my hand and also deflects off, landing with a thud on the ground between the pit barricade and the stage. I can see it sitting there for what seemed like an hour. I can see it sitting there even now as I write this. I contemplated jumping the barrier, then rethought what that would mean: a sit-down visit with security (or worse, a ride in a police car) and dismissal from the rest of the show and I’m a long way from Chicago and it’s already approaching my bedtime. So there it sat, motionless, unloved and ownerless on the ground, until finally a concert security guard came over and handed the harmonica to the man with very long arms. Am I sad? Am I bitter? Neither. This sort of thing has happened to me before. On the Greendale tour, a prop newspaper was hurled into the crowd during the show and, you guessed it, it deflected off of my hands. I’m convinced Neil recognized my Manassas shirt and USDA hat and maybe, just maybe, said, hey that autograph seeking kid might not have been too bad of a guy after all. Like Pittsburgh Steeler Mean Joe Green throwing his jersey to the kid in that soda commercial from long ago. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Only that d*mn kid caught the jersey. I’m blessed to have touched the linseed oil-soaked harmonica that was used by Neil Young and is now owned by that fellow with the very long arms.

Last words of advice: If Neil and the Chrome Hearts are playing anywhere near you see them now. Do not wait. And crank up Cowgirl in the Sand.

Thank you Neil, Micah, Corey, Anthony and Spooner. And thank you, Thrasher.
