A Question on Neil Young's Product "Quality"

Discussions of the COASTAL soundtrack have raised questions on Neil Young's product "quality".

As background,  Neil Young's COASTAL film soundtrack vinyl & CD product have been withdrawn from sale on Greedy Hand due to errors in the album’s production and mastering process. In addition, after a series of glitches, the soundtrack is now streaming on NYA.

A comment by Old Black on a message received when ordering  COASTAL soundtrack:

"I regret to inform you that Neil Young has discovered an audio glitch on the cd and has therefore requested that we put an immediate halt to all shipments, and also issue an immediate recall on any stock that remains at retail."

The latest episode comes after various past struggles with quality, such as the Rust Bucket DVD issue or  BBC 1971 DVD reissue,  But as The Flying Scotzman points out, is this really production and mastering issues or simply poor quality control allowing bad product to go to production?

Other fans have in turn pointed out that’s unfair, as not all these issues are equal. Why? Because while most were errors in quality control, others were deliberate creative decisions.

The Rust Bucket dvd re-think, for example, was a separate issue to some of the recent QC issues. The mix was not a mistake, as such, but an intended effect by Neil — and one with good thinking behind it. 

(To clarify, the first Rust Bucket dvd featured an remastered version of John Hanlon’s flagship master mix for the CD version. The fairly aggressive remaster for the dvd involved John’s mix being made narrower, louder, and given a treble and bass boost. This was an attempt, perhaps only partially successful, to more thrillingly simulate the excitement of the authentic live sound. The second edition dvd restored John’s unedited mix.)

But despite being an intentional production choice, the first Rust Bucket does in hindsight feel like a pivotal project — a turning point of sorts:

It was around this time Niko Bolas took over from John Hanlon. (This is perhaps relevant, or perhaps merely coincidence. Niko has certainly done great work with Neil before, even if his preference for drums over guitars is perhaps less suited to Neil’s electric work than Briggs’ and Hanlon’s guitar-centric approach.)

 As Scotsman concludes: "And is it asking too much to expect Neil’s record company to play a role in actually checking the product works as intended (and meets even a minimal-viable standard of quality) before putting it on sale?". No, not at all.

Quality issues aside, the concert film COASTAL was a joy to experience in theaters with friends and new acquaintances. So one can only hope this all resolves swiftly so that the wonderful soundtrack can be properly experienced and enjoyed.

Lastly, we can only add that Neil Young's product quantity has been staggering over the recent years.  Definitely not an excuse, but it's not surprising when one declares "open the vaults" that there are faults.

REVIEW: Neil Young 72: Archives Vol. III | Everybody’s Dummy

Neil Young Archives Volume #3 Drops

 

The reviews for  Neil Young Archives Volume #3 continue to roll in from around the EARTH.

Here's an in-depth review with all of the track analysis we need to disCERN the nuggets.  Not that there's a lot of chaff on NYA#3, but getting to the wheat is the treat.

From Everybody’s Dummy, here's a clip from their #72 Neil young review:

Accepted Neil lore is that he recorded an album of mostly solo acoustic songs to be called Oceanside Countryside, to which the label execs suggested he add more instrumentation. 

Rather than be offended, he did exactly that, resulting in what would be eventually released as Comes A Time. Because there is no documentation otherwise in the box, it’s therefore implied that the Oceanside Countryside disc presents that unreleased first draft verbatim, which is curious, as it’s sequenced in strict recorded order, unlike Homegrown and Chrome Dreams. (Neil has since confirmed the official planned running order included eight of the songs on this disc, plus the older “Captain Kennedy” and “The Old Homestead”, and not chronologically.) At any rate, there are some nice stripped-back mixes of Comes A Time songs, plus the familiar “Pocahontas” and “Lost In Space”, unreleased takes of “It Might Have Been” and “Dance Dance Dance”, a rightfully rejected “Comes A Time”, and a mix of “Peace Of Mind” with a lost verse.

The sessions to complete Comes A Time—which also included outtakes of “We’re Having Some Fun Now”, an unreleased version of “Love/Art Blues”, and a cover of the oldie “Please Help Me, I’m Falling”—bookend a one-off benefit performance performed by Neil with Nicolette, the session players, and the Gone With The Wind Orchestra. That show is not in the box, but the rehearsal for it makes up the bulk of the Union Hall disc. It’s a mix of old and new songs, including a pointed medley of “Dance Dance Dance” and “Love Is A Rose”, a strings-laden “Alabama” with a “Sweet Home Alabama” tag, and the mega-rare “Lady Wingshot”.

Thanks much Everybody’s Dummy!  Good notes to assist on zeroing in the most vital elements of NYA#3.  While we would love to sit down and listen to 17 discs, it's just impossible these days.  Many times we wish things like this came out in the 1980's.  Not that we had unlimited time back in the 80's but everything was so different back in the days that used to be.

Here is an in depth review of Neil Young Archives Vol. 3 from our pal @ Davy's Flicks. 

   

Davy staggers thru the magintude of Neil Young Archives Vol. 3. Davy reports that it took him over two dedicated weeks to immerse himself in the boxset.  And this covers only the 17 CDs -- not the BluRay films, which will come in the future.

Also, Davy takes head on some of the "complaints" on NYA#3.  Nice balanced job on that difficult task Davy!  We know that we have a great deal of difficulty in criticizing an artist's lifetime capstone project.  While we all expect perfection in all things, the impossibility is the reality. Reasonable expectations, as always.

Comment of the Moment: Neil Young's Time Fades Away on CD: "50 years have passed"

Again, quite a bit of headscratching in our erstwhile rustie grain communities on the recent  Times-Contrarian | NYA, where Neil Young writes about how it has been 50 years since the album Time Fades Away was released and now a CD should be released?!

Here is the Comment of the Moment on the somewhat typical "neilyoungian logic" on Neil Young's Time Fades Away on CD: "50 years have passed" by Tomatron: 

TFA on vinyl, its native format. 

Dionys, I see the connections too. So much of what arrives on NYA is subject to Neil’s train of thought. It would be interesting to see the site in an entirely chronological view, post-wise. 

What trends might emerge?

Format is so key to my enjoyment of this music. I couldn’t even bear TFA until I found a 70s pressing leafing through LPs at Antone’s Records. Then the sound made sense to me. The format of some of these newly heard tunes is similarly a focus for me. Will Under The Rainbow include the digital file of the entire unedited show like CKJr Blues did? That’s the way I wanna hear it! Such a presentation does not lend itself to vinyl, but holds up well as a document of the “you were there” feel of the bootleg. It’s for sure my favorite way to listen to Royce and Dorothy.

Ducks: Bootleg? Not a bootleg? I wonder if it’ll be great on vinyl. Likely so. But will there be Official Non-Bootleg Outtakes?

One last thought on format before I hit the hay for the last school day before a much-needed spring break. 

The new release of Neil Young (CSG Reversal)… what do we think? It sounded big and bold coming out of this iPhone. But on headphones, the mono version felt lacking. It was not meant to be mono, just shoehorned into that format for radio play at the time. It also has the feeling of being rushed out. One of the tracks is not even in mono! It’s the best-sounding one of the bunch. If you haven’t picked it out yet, I won’t spoil it. As it stands, the CSG version is currently still my go-to version. 

Like Neil said, those mixes are a lot better. The CSG doesn’t bother me as much as it might, because it’s an effect applied equally across the whole album. Classic recorded music is full of these baked-in idiosyncratic sounds. However, when Neil’s Stereo CSG Reversal is released in full, I suspect it will become the definitive edition of the solo debut.

Honestly, we haven't picked up on the whole CSG Reversal mono/stereo remix on Neil's 1st album.  We know the subject has been kicking around for decades and has been discussed a thousand times before.

If someone could please enlighten us to whether we have some "wheat" here or not, drop a comment below.  It kinda sounds like there might be an audible difference/upgrade of significance?  Or does one need "Neil ears" to hear?

REVIEW: "World Record" - Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse | Everybody’s Dummy

Here is a review of  "World Record" - Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse from our good friends over on Everybody’s Dummy:

When Neil’s on a roll, it shows. 

Back with Crazy Horse for an unprecedented third album in a row, World Record finds the boys holed up in the legendary Shangri-La Studios, now owned by co-producer Rick Rubin. Yet the sound is just as ragged and rough-hewn as anything Neil ever recorded in a barn. The environment is the main topic again, but at least the songs aren’t as ranting or myopic as before.

The lyrical content aside, “Love Earth” is a subdued and misleading opener; kids of a certain age will appreciate that he’s appropriated the melody from the closing theme from The Magic Garden TV show. Here we also hear the “kick tub” that will feature prominently among the band’s percussion. “Overhead” is almost jaunty, with a piano and what sounds like a banjo but isn’t listed. While we can’t say it’s dreamy, the middle section that provides the title and an interlude is a good transition between the halves. 

He’s said he started these songs by whistling as he walked, so we’ll forgive him for lifting his own melody from “Looking Forward” on “I Walk With You (Earth Ringtone)”. The track itself is nice and sludgy, with Nils Lofgren’s pedal steel providing another link to earlier albums. His accordion provides the other sound on the gentle “This Old Planet (Changing Days)”, which is otherwise pinned to a honky-tonk backing.

Here is a review of  "World Record" - Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse from our good friends over on The Old Grey Cat:

The epic “Chevrolet,” which clocks in at 15:15 on digital and CD (but runs shorter on LP), echoes the Crazy Horse of yore. 

Transcendent guitar solo follows transcendent guitar solo, while Neil weaves a song-long reminiscence about what he—and, by extension, we—have left in the exhaust of our lives. Good and bad memories abound, in other words, but there’s not much to do with either other than accept—and move on from—them: “On the road in my old Corvette/New mama said we have a baby on the way/Chevrolet/Soon enough we lost all contact/We were young and foolish/That’s behind us/Chevrolet.” 

To say it’s a tremendous song is an understatement. It’s nirvana. “The Old Planet (Reprise),” which is just Neil at his Wurlitzer, ends the album on an anticlimactic note, but—honestly—the same would be true for any song that followed “Chevrolet.”

With the exception of the wondrous new Maggie Pope single, “Northern Girl,” I’ve had World Record—which was co-produced with Rick Rubin—on repeat for much of the past two days. 

Some fans may have issues with the thematic one-note of the album, though—as I say above—other threads are evidenced in the lyrics. Others may object to the woodsy charms of acoustic songs found on a Crazy Horse album. 

But as I noted in my review of last year’s Barn, “It’s not the Crazy Horse of yore. It’s the Crazy Horse of now”—and the Crazy Horse of now still electrifies the soul. (This soul, at any rate.) 

So open your ears and heart, and give World Record a listen.

Well now, don't we all.  Your summation of "So open your ears and heart, and give World Record a listen" is really the only way to approach Neil. Many just don;t get it, which of course is OK. Rusties just need to accept where The Man is at this stage in life.  

It's easy to get buried in the past...

INTERVIEW: Neil Young Embraces Imperfection | The New Yorker

In an interview Neil Young Embraces Imperfection | The New Yorker by Amanda Petrusich, he discusses his new album with the theme of climate change, his friendship with Rick Rubin, and recording melodies on his flip phone.

“There must be a way to effect change. There has to be a way to help,” Neil Young says. “I don’t think it’s gonna be by yelling at people or calling people names.”

The New Yorker: “World Record” has a looseness and a spontaneity that’s rare in new recordings. It reminds me a little of listening to old 78-r.p.m. records—most early recording artists had just one three-minute shot in front of the microphone, and sometimes things got a little wild, a little free. How do you purposefully cultivate that feeling in the studio?

Neil Young: I think it has to be an accident. 

One thing that many people have said about this record is that it sounds like it’s coming from another place or time. It’s not really relevant to the last record or the record before. I came up with the melodies for eight or nine of these songs while going on walks. You know how you do. You might be taking a walk with the dog or something, and you start whistling a tune. Maybe it’s not a tune you even care about; maybe you’re imagining you’re seeing a parade somewhere, and this is what the band is playing. Then I said, wait a minute, I’ve got my phone—which is a funky old flip phone, with a really funky camera in it—and I turned on the camera and made a movie while I was walking along, whistling this melody. That kept happening for weeks. I’d take my little flip phone with me, and record anything that I started whistling and didn’t know what it was. No words, no instruments, no tones, no chords—just the rhythm of walking, and whistling. And that’s how it started.

Then I was in Malibu, thinking about recording with Crazy Horse. I remembered that I had these whistling things in my pocket. I started listening to them, and I just banged out lyrics—I never corrected anything, except for my spelling, which is awful. I was using a computer instead of writing by hand—I never use a computer, so that was weird—and I’m listening to this guy whistling a melody, and I’m making up words. 

It was almost like I was writing with somebody.

Comment of the Moment: Comes A Time & Time Fades Away by Neil Young - Underrated?

The Comment of the Moment is from a recent post VIDEO REVIEW:  Comes A Time & Time Fades Away by Neil Young - Underrated? by Abner:

I  don't think Time Fades Away can be overrated because it can't be rated in any usual sense. 

I mean, the sheer and raw originality of the whole album is, by usual standards, inconceivable. Post Harvest, he releases what? But then the songs cannot be dismissed. For many good songwriters, "LA" might be a career type achievement. For Neil Young it is almost a throw-away. The album pulses with urgency and lingers on the edges of nihilism without going over. As always, Neil seeks redemption. Everything that is remarkably angry, ugly or dismal is balanced back by rough dignity, forgiveness and grace. ("Don't Be Denied" is at the base of self-respect and so it reaches out to others, it is relational, not insulated or isolating. In high school it was my theme song and if I cared about theme songs now, it would still be my theme song.) 

Neil Young always touches those on the margins and as it turns out that seems to most of us: in other words, he speaks in universals buried deep in his particular experience.

Comes a Time is weirdly good, not the expectation. "Look Out For My Love" has that roughed up emotional need that seems a base of human love- the song picks up an urgency that becomes dramatic in the best ways. "Comes a Time" bluntly expresses what is universal without being banal- who can do this except a great artist? I can actually recall my mother saying once- to someone who was inquiring about my wayward sister- that there "comes a time when people find stability." Yes, a cliche but one that is surrounded on all sides by truth and danger. One wonders: is it possible to keep drifting, to never find stability? And the answer is yes, which is why we wonder about how anything can be stable and secure.

Finally, Time Fades Away is a sharp slap in the face to an embedded hegemony of success thinking and it is then beautifully liberating. No, the artist does not simply follow up with some unilinear progress, but might actually break in half, which Neil does on this album. His expressed brokenness is part of our healing, the hope of art and the human spirit, that we can come back from the brink. But we have to go to the brink. 

Many thought he had lost his marbles when in fact he was the one who was dealing with reality.

After all, folks have only been waiting since well ... we started the TFA Petition back in 2014 and have gathered 10's of thousands of signatures. All to little or no avail, deeply and sadly.
