Last November, we reported that Neil Young was in the studio with his latest new band The Chrome Hearts.
Per producer and sound engineer John Hanlon's Instagram (via Rusted Moon Rusted Moon), Neil Young recorded at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La Studio in Malibu. From photo caption, the recording is analog 16 track direct to vinyl.
Lou Adler is credited as co-producer.
Shangri-La Studio is where Neil Young recorded his last studio album "World Record" with Crazy Horse in 2022.
The brief snippet that I heard of his other new song "Thankful" was very similar to Harvest Moon, with natural harmonic guitar picking, country folk strumming and Neil singing in a high falsetto voice. It sounded to me like an instant classic. So my guess is this album will have a variety of different styles, sort of like Freedom or Chrome Dreams ll.
I do not hear this as similar to Fork in the Road. It is not Neil unhinged and dangerous but somewhat controlled and brilliantly simple, direct, and right on target. This is a great song. Instant classic. Neil's back.
Music is the highest form of spirituality. Big Change It didn’t get me to the spiritual place or hypnotic space…. Gotta get me some Big Time or Loose Change to take the magic potion.
John Hanlon, Young's long time mixing engineer says big change is "in your face loud irreverent rock 'n roll paint splatter on the canvas in the vein of a Jackson Pollack painting." Ok I Love Pollack. I understand how it’s in his vein. It is loud. It’s not irreverent to me… hope the album as a whole rises to a higher level.
I am not sure what the highest form of spirituality really is nor am I sure what spirituality is? I don't know "spiritual place" (respectfully). This song is interesting to me, it seems like a strong shove in the right direction. There is ambiguity here, which I am glad for. The riff is anthemic, the lyric is anthemic. When I listen to this song I don't want any hypnotic space, I want to sign with it and be loud.
Throughout Neil’s career he was borrowed elements from other songs that he has written. This isn’t a criticism, but simply an observation. And I have always enjoyed his occasional songs with familiar themes and chord changes. It’s kind of like his signature in a way, and this new track has several different reference points from his past.
I don’t watch music videos when previewing a new song. Because I’d rather let the song stand on its own merits. And I really like the fact that the lyrics aren’t telling you what to think, it’s just observing what’s coming. And the riff is definitely catchy.
I’m looking forward to hearing the whole album in context with the other songs. Neil has always been a great sequencer of his albums, and depending on where each song lives on the album, tends to enhance both the song before and, the song after. This is one of many reasons why I love listening to complete albums. The artists lays out the tracks with a very specific theme, or intention.
But for now; judging from this one song, I’m actually pretty excited about this new album. So hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to hear the whole thing…… soon.
Peace to all……..and here’s hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. 🙏
I like the new track, & am excited to hear the new album!

Is it just a single dropping or the full album? Confused.
Sorry on confusion but this all the info we have. It's a shakey deal, you know.
Looks like from the Quboz page it's a single, not the full LP.
A new single dropped overnight and is available. Pre-inauguration timing, it would appear. Very reminiscent to the Fork in the Road sound.
Here's the oficial video to the song "Big Change is Coming" : https://youtu.be/SIKxvzY8sJs
Very similar to "Fork..." indeed. I'll reserve my judgment, hoping the album is more "Greendale" or "Living with War".
Maybe also the backside to "Children of Destiny"?

What a great surprise to wake up to! I dug this quite a bit! Simple, but very cool riff. I found the song very catchy. Love the album cover too.
Second of the album is here : https://www.reddit.com/r/neilyoung/comments/1h2b79c/new_video_from_neils_ig_account/?rdt=60611
I feel something big, guys
Big Change video immediately brought to mind the vibe of the lyrics to Rainbow of Colors from Colorado.
I'm going to give Lou Adler credit for ensuring that both the song sounds finished and his voice is up to the task.
