What Might Neil Young's 2025 Bring Us?
You ask, "so what might Neil Young's 2025 bring?"
Good question and a comment by Dionys whets the appetite with expectations:
- Talkin’ to the Trees (the new album)
- Oceanside Countryside (the vinyl version)
- Tennessee (The Int’l Harvesters rediscovered 1985 tape)
- ORS set (with Mirrorball, Sleeps with Angels)
- Mirror Ball Live (w/ Pearl Jam)
- Homefires
- Europe + U.S. tour with The Chrome Hearts
Thanks for the "informed speculation" Dionys. That pretty well tracks what we're seeing as well. Obviously, all eyes on tour planning.
Regarding Oceanside Countryside, a comment by Tomatron notes that "Field Of Opportunity" landed on streaming services such as Apple Music last Friday. This is the mix with Neil’s original harmonies, before Nicolette Larson vocals were added to the track.
There is some level of confusion on the release details of "Oceanside - Countryside" which is also available as a standalone CD -- with the same cover -- from "Neil Young Archives Volume III". This CD of the same name contains eight of the ten songs, five of which are identical versions, however as a digital mix instead of analog.
Here's what seems to be the difference: the order of the songs. The 1977 version sequence is as originally planned by Neil Young, as opposed to the CD of the "Archives Vol. III" which is arranged chronologically by recording date. In addition, two songs - "Field Of Opportunity" and "Dance Dance Dance" - are missing the vocals by Nicolette Larson, which were added later via overdub.
Got it? Another Valentine's Day gift from Neil with a February 14th release date of a black vinyl and a clear vinyl limited edition.
Or, just sit back and enjoy Neil Young's "Fireside Sessions".
Labels: album, concert, fireside sessions, neil young, neil young archives, singer-songwriter, solo, song, tour
15 Comments:
Just as the disc in Vol. II was titled "Tonight's The Night (1973)", the disc titled "Oceanside Countryside (1977)" in Vol. III doesn't have all the songs that made it to the album -- namely "Captain Kennedy" and "The Old Homestead".
Would still be nice to have an official CD of it.
I’m guessing we finally see Mirror Ball, and the Alchemy set as well. They’ve been working on those for some time now. I also expect the next Official Release Box Set this year as well. I’m convinced that Neil will surprise us all with something special that hasn’t even been mentioned yet.
Whatever he puts out there, I’ll be happy to add it to my collection.
Peace to all 🙏
The thing I'm most looking forward to is the ORS Series 6 boxset. That will complete my Neil Young vinyl collection. That and going to see him live again (if his tour comes to Scotland).
As I sit here obsessively keeping my eye on Watch Duty updates and worrying about friends in Altadena and the Palisades, it occurred to me that I seem to recall seeing somewhere that the NYA archives and/or the staff office is located in Pasadena. Am I remembering that correctly? Pasadena has stayed outside the fire perimeter, but I do hope all staff are safe and the archives themselves are safe. Fires, while still raging out of control, seem to be moving away from habitable areas. That said, until we get some rain, all of the south land is just a tinderbox that can flare up at a moments notice. It's very stressful.
Although looking at the firestorm from far away I had the same issue in mind. As a geographer by profession I always have been interested in the topography of rock & roll music, (and have been around). The maps showing the fires in L.A indicate that these got fairly close to all kinds of memorable places with a close connection to the music of Neil Young and his cohorts. Above all that the spectre of the big question is hovering: Did it occur to anyone, that the present consumerism life style is threatening both past and future of a heritage that at present is still held in high regard?
Would it mean anything to you if the house in Topanga Canyon went up in flames (Maybe it did already,? I don't know.) What if the ranch Broken Arrow would become uninhabitable? "Legend has it that somewhere around here there had been a street that commonly was known to have been the 'Sunset Strip' ..."
I think that there is more to the picture than just a few super wealthy celebrities saving their chicken (Mel Gibson) and loosing one of their luxury residences.
Or is to ask these questions as un-American as it gets in the disruptive sphere of the US of A in 2025?
Also look a the recent coverage in NYA's Times Contrarian on all this. Neil Young himself appears to have similar questions and positions.
We know that Neil is playing Glastonbury after a bit of a flip-flip so we have one European show confirmed… that might suggest a festival tour.

Edited: My home town is Santa Monica and I spent a lot of time in the Santa Monica mountains & the former area (now in cinders) called Palisades. It is heartbreaking to see the destruction that has obviously been caused by Global Warming. 100 mph Santa Ana winds is a new thing. That didn’t happen until we burned too much fossil fuel. It is very frustrating to live in a country in which our newly elected prez is a Global Warming denier. He is a sociopath, and half of US voters do not care that he is one. “They’re eating the pets, the dogs.”
On the other hand, both parties are pro war, pro bombing Gaza, anti medical coverage for the people. Biden was unaware of much but he did know that he had to give Israel as many bombs as possible and plenty of bullets for the ongoing genocide. Being Anti Genocide is not at all the same as being Anti Semitic; this should be obvious to anyone.
So in the US, we choose one of the two evil parties to vote for. That explains some of the votes for Trump. It’s pretty maddening. But Trump is so reckless and insane that the world is in grave peril.
At least we have the right soundtrack playing!
I only recently was able to get NYA3. It has a small amount of unreleased stuff compared to what I was hoping for. Rehashing released albums is less exciting for me. Rearranging released songs on a “lost album” is also not that exciting for me. I am a Restless Consumer but I can’t afford to buy all of Neil’s new items for sale, especially on vinyl. I will get 5 CDs (or so) of music after I boil down NYA3. Boarding House is awesome. Looking forward to NYA4 also. Tonight I will work yet another 12+ hour overnight shift for “Double Time” $ and keep the bills paid, slowly making forward progress on tackling some debt. I hope our cars keep running without requiring much more cash. It’s a material world, and we want our NY music!
I listened to Barn the other day. What a great album! It’s a classic!
I hope the fires are snuffed out soon. My older girl can see the mountains burning close by from her residence at UCLA. Children of the fires and floods.
Big Shift, enlighten the Americans! Health care for all. An End to environmental destruction and over-use of fossil fuels! Let Love Reign! Let it Rain on LA also!

I hope the physical location of NYA is safe from the fires, and NY & DH’s new home. And may God protect the people, the pets, & the wildlife!
It appears that the horrific fires in California are a precursor to our future. The planet has decided to respond to our dangerous treatment of its remarkable gifts. We as a species refuse to accept the responsibility of our actions, and must now pay the price. Another four years of denial may be impossible to recover from, so maybe this is why Elon Musk is in such a hurry to get to Mars.
I’m doing everything in my power to protect our planet, and have been since 1973, but we may have passed the point of no return. Regardless of what we do now. So far we are experiencing just the beginning stages of climate change, and I think things will only get worse. Unfortunately the bottom line, and profit has taken precedent over logic, so we’ll all just have to deal with the consequences. I’m less than optimistic about the future of our planet than ever before.
Peace to all 🙏…..regardless!!!
I'm not very excited about the upcoming release of Oceanside Countryside since this will be the 8th album that has tracks that are already featured on other past releases. The albums are Hitchhiker, Chrome Dreams, American Stars And Bars, Comes A Time, NYA volume 3 Oceanside Countryside disc, Rust Never Sleeps and Hawks And Doves. I am though super stocked about the new Neil album coming out this year. And if I had to guess as far as another release this year coming out I would say it might be Mirror Ball Live.
@Dan Swan: Children of the Fires & Floods. I agree that we appear to be in the onset of Global Warming; these unprecedented fires in LA (100mph winds) are a wake up call that things are running amok! The weird new weather is not safe, but the politicians will try to divert blame for the fires (Trump blaming Ca Gov for January wildfires which are unstoppable. There are not forests in most of the mountains to manage. It’s desert chaparral, manzanita. Trump is an idiot or the Devil for trying to pretend that “Global Warming is a hoax.” We have out the wrong man in charge to preside over the country as he pushes fossil fuels. We must stop burning fossil fuels at this breakneck pace.
It’s too bad the Dems propped up dementia victim Joe Biden, saying he was of sound mind, when he is clearly becoming a vegetable. What can we vote for? Both parties like Gaza Genocide, so there you go! The Empire IS evil. The broken 2 party system is a joke! We live in Oligarchy! Big Shift please!

I’m with you Alan….
The situation in California is completely unprecedented, and I’m not convinced people are willing to wake up to the reality that exists outside these social media platforms.
We seem to be living in an alternate universe.
The majority of the population is being brainwashed by X, Facebook, and these radical YouTube channels. I wish people would understand just how much they are being manipulated by these so called social media site. These platforms are designed specifically to manipulate information in order to create an alternate narrative from reality. If people could find the wisdom to detach themselves from these platforms long enough to look around at the world they actually live in, then perhaps they could wake up to the fact that they are being manipulated.
Reality does not exist in these algorithms. They are simply tools to manipulate. These billionaires are using these tools to create more profit for themselves by selling fear to the masses. We have become pawns on their chessboards, and we have willingly surrendered our ability for critical thinking. The technology is now in power, and we gave it power freely.
It’s time for us to disconnect from our technology, and reacquaint ourselves with our fellow citizens. If we can do this, we’ll be able to see that they aren’t the enemy. The technology is the enemy.
Peace to all 🙏
I think you hit the nail on the on the head, Dan. It’s amazing to me how many people I speak to today have no idea about the world around them. They don’t read newsprint or news magazines* (do they even still exist? Time, Newsweek…), they don’t watch the “Traditional” news on television, worse, they no longer trust in any of the above. No A.M. radio or meanigful newsradio either.
Technology. Has. Done. This. Our generation was FORCED to pay attention. Later generations (and certainly This generation) not so much. People can’t even walk without a screen in their eyes and pods in the ears. Which, you would think, would be a good thing. Not. TikTok, Facebook, Joe Rogan podcasts.
Brainwashed & ill informed.
A potent combo.
* I don’t read much print either these days. Print is too small, strongest glasses aren’t strong enough.
