Today, Friday, November 18th, Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse releases a new album 'World Record'.
Neil Young has released a studio album -- on average, about every 14 months -- for the last 53 years. 'World Record' will be his 44th studio album since 1969. Also, this will be Neil Young's 3rd consecutive studio album w/ Crazy Horse after "Colorado" (2019) and "Barn" (2021) -- their second album of new studio recordings within the past 12 months.
But hey, who's counting, anyways? Numbers add up to nothin'... afterall ...

I keep checking in for Scotsman's thoughts.
NOT a criticism, but Chevrolet reminds me a lot of Rumblin from Le Noise. That song was a highlight of that album for me, so maybe this is the spiritual sequel. I look back at the gas guzzler that left the ground rumblin' after all it's emissions.
Thrash-duly noted your comments from earlier regarding prioritizing a tour. Chevrolet clearly would've been the centerpiece of the set and I would like to see how it evolves in a love setting.
Still digesting the album as a whole. The Wonder Won't Wait is intriguing me.

Hey, I found a venue to visit and play live! This could be a cruelty-free-sourced food, green fuels, and health safety in an outdoor venue: Outlaw Field in Boise, I believe they had food trucks there back in 2018. Maybe a good local source could cater?
It could be the ultimate Thrasher’s Wheat blog meetup! We’re going to raise a glass to our common interests and let peace prevail. That and a great live show by our favorite Artist!

We need that in the world to save the humans! The humans are so destructive they are destroying our home planet!

Unfortunately one of my family members is very ill right now, so I'm going to be a bit behind. I haven't listened yet, and I don't want to distractedly listen to the album once and then write a load of nonsense.
(Instead, I'm going to listen to the album several times and then write a load of nonsense).
I'll aim to share some ideas within the next few days. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the record as much as I'm hoping to.

Just finished my first trip through World Record on clear vinyl, and this might take some time, so I apologize in advance for the lengthy post. When Colorado was released I was completely impressed with the entire album. Great lyrics, ebb and flow, and the distinctive sound of Crazy Horse in full gallop. Then came Barn, which I considered a perfect record. Loose, in the moment, and filled with heart.
As I’m sure most everyone here knows, Neil doesn’t make hits, he makes statements. Sometimes he swings and misses, sometimes he hits it into the stratosphere….this is one of those. Much like Psychedelic Pill, World Record is sequenced brilliantly. Every song feels like an introduction into the next. This is a record that needs to be heard on a nice sound system in its entirety, completely uninterrupted……and LOUD! This one has as much staying power as any of the legendary classics Neil has blessed us with over the decades. I can honestly place it in the same category as Sleeps With Angels, Tonight’s the Night, Ragged Glory, Rust Never Sleeps, On The Beach…..etc. etc. etc.
This album contains everything we’ve come to admire from these guys. Odd time signatures, wobbly vocals, unexpected instrument choices, and epic guitar work. Lyrically Neil has brought out the turn of phrase that has separated him from most lyricists. A few examples ….”Take some time to live before you die, cause the wonder won’t wait. No the wonder won’t wait for you to stand outside yourself”…..or… “On the true days, and the Lyin’ days. Where the crowd stays, and the purple haze is floating down from the sky, that’s where it shows”….or….. “ Take my life towards the endless flow, and move me with the night. I’m beyond the time I had to know, I’m waiting out of sight”. These are just a few samples of what I heard on first listen, and the lyric sheet contains them all. Neil said that he sat at the computer (which he’s never done) and just let the words come without any thought, and boy does he deliver.
Musically; everything makes sense within the context of the whole, but a few stand outs on first listen are, Love Earth, This Old Planet, Break the Chain, The Wonder Won’t Wait, and Chevrolet……which I hope someday we will hear the unedited version. These songs are all Neil in top form, and Crazy Horse is honestly the ONLY band that could pull this off with such commitment and spirit.
The Horse magic is on full display throughout….and lest we forget….. Rick Rubin. His influence is not to be overlooked, as he seems to have a magic touch with everyone he works with, and this record would have certainly sounded much different without him. I hope that he and Neil can work together again someday, they just seem like they understand each other, and they have created a masterpiece of a record. I understand that the word masterpiece gets overused a lot, but this one deserves the title. If someone wants to understand what I mean, they only need to sit down with this album with a nice stereo system, crank it up, and listen all the way through. Case closed.

Today was rough for me too. I put down my first dog today, a 15 year old Shiba Inu. He protected my family, he was a great dog. Gonna listen to Old King tonight. He had a stroke & lost the ability to walk, eat, or drink water. He was going to die soon, so we stepped in to save him the suffering.
We have another dog and 2 cats also. I cried my eyes out today. My heart hurt to say goodbye to Jack. I told him he would be a puppy again, running in the Elysian Fields.
@ Dan : great review! I have only streamed it so far. What a great new album! Neil rocks on the grungy electric organ & all the rest. NYCH nailed it here. A masterpiece? Yes, I will second Dan’s assessment.

Alan: I'm very sorry to hear about your dog. (The dog—aka the boss—of the Scotsman household is also 15 years old).
I know from past experience how hard it is to make decisions at the end of a dog's life.
What I *can* tell is that your dog Jack had a long and very loved life, and you made a very brave and most compassionate decision on his behalf. If only more people looked after their animals with the same kindness.

Scotsman, I was on the lookout for your take on World Record. In the meantime, Dan really gave us all a lot to think about...

Speaking of which, a very good interview with Neil in the LA Times. It is clear that, unlike many others, Neil does really seem to understand the "factory farm" or better the CAFO.
Save the planet indeed and at the same time stop insane cruelty. I do hear many argue that "not much pain" as the sole criterion for appropriate treatment of animals: a stupid and perverse view.
Iowa has a population of about 2 million people, give or take, but last year 50 million hogs were "brought to market." These are animals that are never outside and they are literally "produced" as cuts of meat. What we might call a walking pork chop and vastly distinct from the wild and dangerous hogs that roam many parts of the United States.
There are two counties in Iowa that produce more fecal waste than New York City and Philadelphia combined.
Nothing about any of this is sustainable and nothing about it even comes near animal husbandry. It is brutal, cruel, and efficient: a real element of dystopia.
Neil is right not to have anything to do with it and I admire him a great deal for speaking the truth.
For a while now I have been contemplating to write a contribution to Neil Young's new health column over at the NYA about cooking. I am convinced that one major achievement in the fight against CAFOs would be if people would return to the old ways, when meals were prepared based on raw food stuffs as opposed to the pre-processed, standardized, artificial concoctions that run under the label convenience food. When travelling in the Northeast of the US in 2017 my wife and I had serious trouble finding a plain yoghurt with no additives and not based on Frankenfood technology (apologies to Abner at this point). We saw super-markets with literally hundreds of "yoghurts" of all blends and flavours, but none that we would see fit for humane (!) consumption. The T-Bones were so huge that we could have been eating on them for all week. We saw frozen turkeys of the size to feed whole orphanages. (Enjoy your upcoming Thanksgiving dinners by the way.)
In Germany it's not that different, but we have our organic stores and supply chains almost everywhere. The main problem nowadays in our country appears to be, that several generations now have been pampered with these "just add water, boil or nuke it"- recipes. At the same time food is going to waste in unbelievable quantities, the largest percentage originating in the households, not in production or retail. People totally have lost the knowledge of the most basic technologies of food conservation and storage beyond the freezer. However, with the ongoing energy crisis this might change for the better because meats for example are getting more and more expensive.
I wonder who does the cooking at Neil Young's place nowadays and what he is eating, of course. (I am not going to search his waste-bin though, he is not Bob Dylan).

Frankenfood! This is precisely right. I have a great group of students working on antibiotics, hormones, and hopefully forever chemicals in STORM WATER run off (not wastewater). I say hopefully on forever chemicals because we don't have all the stuff we need for testing.

You already know I agree with all your thoughts on factory farms. I wish it wasn't such a depressing subject — but it's good more people are getting involved now and relaxing they have the power to make a difference. Both through their food choices and by putting pressure on the powers that be.

There’s an hour long documentary on the Making of World Record that is up on NYA (Hearse Theatre screen 3) for 24hrs only!!!
Music aside the documentary sure provides a choice selection of Nils Logren's guitars. What kind of guitar is the one with the circular body? A custom made resonator guitar, an electric banjo? Against Nils' silhouette a Gretsch (Black Falcon?) really appears as being very large. Also nice the Fender Jaguar used for playing slide guitar. What else is there to be seen or heard? Neil Young's kick-box echoes the banging sound of HHMM.
