Neil Young Archives: Answer to Answers #6 | NYU
As Neil Young's staggering prolificacy continues to unfurl in all of its splendid ragged glory, here is the latest attempt to summarize his release pipeline -- an effort in futility, if ever.
Here is a curated summary of some of Neil Young's most interesting answers to Letters to the Editor | Times-Contrarian | Neil Young Archives by Robert Broadfoot.
From Members | Neil Young Archives:
This is the sixth in a series of summaries of Neil’s most interesting answers to Letters to the Editor in the NYA Times-Contrarian. These replies date from Feb 8 to Mar 23, 2022, and are, as always, collated and curated by the “Neil Young Unreleased” Facebook group. Editorial comments are generally marked in [square brackets] and dates refer to the date of publication.
NOTE: Edited summary below. Full details @ LTE | T-C | NYA.
Albums / Films
- Neil confirms the release of the Harvest 50th Anniversary Edition in 2022 and says it will include the movie Harvest Time [which is expected to include footage from solo concerts as well as the Broken Arrow barn sessions and BBC interviews.] (2022-03-23)
- “Will the original Comes A Time [album] one day see an official release?”, a fan asks. Neil: “Yes”. [It should be noted that the ‘original’ Comes A Time, including solo recordings later overdubbed for the final version of Comes A Time, is generally assumed to form all or part of the project now known as Oceanside Countryside. This is expected to be included in some form in Archives Vol. 3.] “Any possibility of a more produced album not just live takes [like Barn was]?” Neil: “Yes.” (2022-03-22)
- Archives Vol. 3 release currently scheduled for “mid year”, says Neil. (2022-03-22)
- “Time Fades Away II was planned but the material didn’t warrant it so we went onward.” [TFA2 was initially planned as a further release covering the early part of the 1973 TFA tour and possibly one or two studio recordings, but we got Tuscaloosa instead.] Neil also confirms that there is still no trace of the original sessions tape for Tonight’s The Night which included all the raps between songs. (2022-03-02)
- “Ragged Glory (extended)” [aka Ragged Glory – Smell The Horse] “is coming this year with 4 outtakes.” (2022-03-02)
- “Toast is a great record. A Crazy Horse Classic coming in 2022.” (2022-02-23)
- “Alchemy not scheduled for 2022.” (2022-02-23)
- “Live Europe with Promise of the Real [Noise & Flowers] 2022 release.” (2022-02-23)
- The NYA streaming version of the forthcoming Official Bootleg Bottom Line will be “complete, no edits”. [The in-between song raps are likely to have been edited off the physical album for space reasons.] (2022-02-22)
Songs
- “Any new songs coming along?”, asks a fan. “Yes” says Neil. (2022-03-22)
- Neil says he is [still!] looking for Evening Coconut to be able to post it sometime. (2022-03-22)
- Answering about Harvesters recordings planned for Vol. 3, specifically Razor Love, Interstate, Silver & Gold, This Old House, Neil says: “Many of those will be there, some added as outtakes, [including] Misfits.” (2022-03-17)
- Asked about the “solo acoustic” demos for Landing On Water which were mentioned in the Shakey biography, Neil replies: “They are not acoustic. They are coming in V4 or sooner.” [Neil does not explain why they will be allocated to Vol. 4 which is generally expected to start chronologically at mid-1987.] (2022-03-16)
- Neil says he considers Throw Your Hatred Down his best anti-war song. (2022-03-16)
- “We have 5 more outtakes from Harvest due soon. Much more to come.” (2022-02-16)

“I’ll always remember somethin’ Chris Rock said”
- Neil Young
Ha, Tomatron, I was thinking of the same lyric after the disgrace of last night. I am glad I went to bed and did not not see it until today.
I am really looking forward to "Toast" and whatever we can get from The Ducks. I did not see that mentioned in the above. I have heard some wild tunes from that brief craziness.
And what is it that is so strange and frightening about "Interstate"? The song is quite unsettling.
Interstate is one of the best song ever.
Have not yet heard Interstate, so I’m very much anticipating various versions now that y’all have highlighted it as a standout. From around the same era as Ragged Glory (my flimsy justification for adding this), just discovered an Archives outtake I’ve not seen mentioned here, so apologies if this is a repeat, but there is a mix of Natural Beauty from Harvest Moon without overdubs now in the cabinet. It’s the live take that was used for the album version before “Joe Yankee” et. al. (credits still in progress: vibes by whom?) added their parts, which is from the same show Dreamin’ Man on the Performance Series record was performed. Just a little extra for Harvest Moon fanatics.
Have mercy on my soul - I listened to both versions of Inca Queen all the way through. I still can’t distinguish between them, except that the mixes are balanced differently, but who would notice?
Something else now on NYA: 60 to 0 out of Achives 3. 17 min...
Well I think this volume 3 will be released soon this year.
Disc 11 will be Road Of Plenty.
Phil
Wow, Phil! Coming in early in that one. Sounds amazing, thanks for the heads up 👍
And the prairie wind blew
