The pricing for the box set is crazy. I've ordered the LP and will buy the BluRay if it is is made available separately. I've no need for the CD and already have the Making of Greendale DVD. Hoping the LP comes with a HiRes download but expect it won't.
At $100 dollars, that’s only $16.66 per disc and I don’t think that’s crazy at all. From what I gather according to all the release information, the Blu Ray is only going to be available in the box set. And yes, we all most likely already own the making of DVD. I just look at it as the price of admission, as this is what is being offered. We just don’t live in a perfect world unfortunately, so it’s a take it or leave it scenario. I’ll pay the price because I love the music and I choose to support the artist. For me, it’s that simple.
Peace 🙏.......VOTE
Absolutely crazy price.
2cd version is $20
2lp version is $30
So, the blu-ray is $50.
In my world, that is a good old-fashioned rip-off.
Really hope archives vol 2 is priced more fairly and considers the fact that people have less money to spend in this post-covid world.
We’re not all boomers with stocks and lucrative pensions.
Excited about this boxed set, will make a wonderful addition to my collection! Thank you for sharing!
They could eliminate all the pricing complaints by simply offering the Blu-Ray on it's own too.
I'm surprised that it's being spread across two discs, yet only containing the Greendale part of the set. Seems short.
Dear Shield, the lucrative pensions are dying.
My calculations did not include the packaging, which obviously cost money to manufacture and design. These days most quality vinyl runs from $25 to $30 a disc, which is obviously not cheap, but Neil has a tendency to release high quality products and packaging. Keep in mind that the quantity being produced is low as most people don’t spend their money on music in a physical product anymore. Therefore, the price goes up when volume goes down.
As far as a lucrative pension goes; I think that is an assumption that has little regard for reality. I’m sure there are some boomers who have such a thing, but I certainly don’t know any.
Peace 🙏
@SHIELDagent
Exactly my point, $50 for a BlueRay and a box.
@Dan, about the packaging, I was very disappointed by The Times... Just a small and thin cardboard sleeve...
It fairness, it was a quick release with a fast turnaround - not what I’d expect from a regular album or a box set anyway (which it never pretended to be).
*In fairness
I was hoping it would also have the full solo Greendale concert (or at the very least the audio available on Apple Music on vinyl). Still, I’ve never heard the full band version live so I’m very much interested.
thanks to all here on comments re: box pricing.
a note for collectors. this is being described as "Limited Edition Box Set" w/ numbering.
So the question is: how limited? 500? 1000? 5000?
for collectors, this is a big deal and drives value. collectors want a low # in a very limited run.
A single digit preferred. On to a double digit. After that triple #'s are pretty valueless.
So hence a premium for collectors. That's the way that operates. Collectors will pay more for a low # in a limited run.
so avg fans, this is meaningless. So the suggestion for a standalone Bluray is valid and will satisfy all constituencies -- collectors and cash strapped fans.
"you pay for this but they give you that"
@thrasher I normally buy every box Neil puts out. I've got the 200gram Greendale, Bluenote Cafe box, also A Letter Home and the ORS boxes, the only one which was numbered was the Bluenote one. So I seriously doubt this new box will be numbered.
I've written to NY via NYA asking for a separate release of the BluRay. I do get the point made elsewhere about smaller volumes being released increasing costs, but this one seems excessively high. If I can't get a separate BluRay I'll make do with a showing on NYA at some point.
Very disappointed about the blu-ray only being included in the box set. It should be available in so many ways. As a stand alone, a two disk CD / blu-ray / dvd. What a world. Constantly making things hard for the average guy. Sometimes you just get pushed up against the wall & just say hell with it.
@ ANDREW - thanks. See

"The box sets are numbered."
another point on all of this is timing. Usually w/ these deluxe sets is either they come out in advance of reg release to hike up premium. Or they come out long after to pull all the pieces together for historical record.
To release Premium and Regular release simultaneously strikes us ... well ... not ideal timing for marketing strategy.
Rust In Peace, Elliot
The Greedy Hand indeed.
It is the Greedy Hand no doubt but it has been for some time. I will pay it as I’ve been waiting to purchase the LP for sometime at a “reasonable” cost. Has anyone priced Greendale LP on discogs lately? It is ridiculous! Talk about the greedy hand! I’m glad Neil is releasing this on vinyl finally. I’m hoping it is 180 or 200 gm vinyl. Next, I’m hoping for Broken Arrow. That too is ridiculously priced on discogs. I’d much rather give the money to the artist then pay someone an outrageous price just because they happened on it. Having said all that, I do think a digital download should be included on all vinyl purchases anymore. If you’re buying the music, you’re buying the music. You should not have to purchase in different formats if you are paying the highest price of them all. Just my opinion.
This is a live version, not the studio version. which is only available in a limited 3 lp box set, I’m sure we will get the studio version, but will take several years as his original album release serious, is only up to 1979, so a long way to go before we get to Broken Arrow & Greendale.
Hey Rusties!
Question: can one advertise Neil related music et al in this comment section Or is that verboten? if it's the former, I have several items I'd like to sell.
If its the latter, no worries. Any place you would recommend selling them besides e-bay?
Thanks!
The live Greendale “Solo” Performance part of the set I saw, was about 100 minutes, but that was so lengthy, as he discussed all the characters and story at length, captured in the Vicar street, Dublin dvd, and without a doubt essential Neil solo, unsure of the length of the Crazy Horse Greendale set, but i would imagine about 80 to 90 minutes, which is a little over the original album length, so not short at all, as would not fit on one vinyl or 1 cd
Just for the sake of perspective and comparisons....... coming over the next few months.
Jimi Hendrix Live in Maui : 3LP’s 2CD’s & BluRay : $51.98. November 20
Joni Mitchell Archives Vol. 1 : 5CD’s : $55.99. October 30
Tom Petty Wildflowers : All The Rest super deluxe Vinyl Box : 9LP’s $249.95.... 7LP set $174.95. October 16
John Lennon: Gimme Some Truth : 4 LP’s $99.99. October 9
Frank Zappa: Halloween 81’ : 6 CD’s $124.98. October 2
Lou Reed New York Deluxe: 2LP’s 3CD’s & 1 DVD : $89.98 ... this one came out last Friday.
Neil Young Live Greendale : 2LP’s 2CD’s & 1 BluRay $99.98. November 6
Neil is clearly asking a premium in comparison to some.
Peace 🙏
Humbly wondering if we need this box more than we wish to get a 1976 box or Ragged glory de luxe... but this is only my doubt
What about a referendum (this is U.S. election year , right?) to vote for the most expected box to be' put out.
..back to the main program
@ NYBD11-12 - generally, that's fine. especially concert tickets are welcomed. but, we don't seem to have that to deal w/ sadly.
But sure, brief details and an email to work out offline is fine here , when thread appropriate such as this

@ Dan - thanks for comparisons. By chance, any of those Limited # editions?

It is not over - priced at all. People still think this is 1976 and I can buy a record for $4.99 at the local dime store.
Let's look at NY related releases which got big limited edition boxes:
A Letter Home
Return To Greendale
CSNY 1974
What do they have in common?
Vinyl, CD, Video Content, Book.
What else? Well scratch out CSNY1974. Neil wasn't in charge of that. Past that one, these were not hugely promising hits. So why deluxe them? And is deluxe even a verb? Contrary to what many fans think, Neil must perceive these releases as a crucial part of his legacy. They have some aspect of art to them that goes beyond his usual releases. And they are few and far between. In that light, go ahead and shell out the bucks. Buy into Neil's legacy. ps. I won't. I'm just hoping the film version shows up in good quality on streaming. cheers, y'all.....
@ LRR - thanks, as always, for contributions here.
It doesn't appear that there's any booklet in the box? Seems like a missed opp for Mazzeo and his art. Certainly much graphic art to pull in. And why not include Vicar St also.
Why not truly deluxe?
Lastly, we know we've made kind of a big deal about this being a numbered edition. Something collectors are ok on coughing up the buck$.
But normally w/ numbered limited edition deluxe releases, there is an ordering process where you lock in your order and number. That's how demand is created. Like a concert where 1st rows goes quick, etc.
When folks see order confirmation #7 or #17 or #77 or #777,etc, they know where they stand in value.
Open ended numbered limited edition deluxe releases w/ no guarantee of what you get is a lottery most collectors don't play.
heck, Neil even did this w/ Pono w/ limited numbered edition signed players by himself, Willie and others.
so seems like a big missed opp to do Greendale right.

Long and short: Return to Greendale is a “maybe” for me. To echo others, if the concert BD were available singly (maybe even as a streaming release through Amazon, itunes, youtube or wherever..), it would probably be a no-brainer.
As is, NYAII must take precedence and both are limited editions—so who knows how long supplies will last?—plus, I have my eye on the upcoming Lennon 80th birthday set, likely less expensive than either of the two NY box sets about to hit the market, let alone the combined cost both.
Man, I’m glad Neil feels some impetus to get material out there, but wallet will only stretch so far. I believe there is a good audience for all these treasures from NYA, but based on the “limited edition” approach, the NYA team knows that audience for box sets is not huge. Why risk over-saturating the market when there should be more economical alternatives to deliver the goods?
If Neil doesn't release a stand alone blu ray for this concert, I'll just screen capture it from NYA and get my own digital copy that way.
Hello Thrasher, Hope you and family are well.
Sorry don't have access to your comment sections,
Wanted to just say I don't understand why every listing of the Blu Ray on all sites I've seen say "Full Concert". But when looking at track listings I've seen it only has the 10 Greendale songs.
I attended two Greendale shows in 2003 and along with setlist fm & sugar mtn all had 5-7 song sets after the Greendale presentation.
In my opinion I believe there is some false advertising being made if taken literally.
Do we know which show, if it's just one, the audio/video is being taken from?
Regards/Peace

@ Nimrod - now why would you outright state here your intent to bootleg?
@ Randy - thanks. see reply @ http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2020/10/comment-of-moment-return-to-greendale.html
Greendale isn't very good - there we go I've said it, the lyrics are infantile and the music contrived. Over and Out. Archives will be $200 +
@Andy, Opinions are like noses: everyone has one and they're all full of snot. That's my G-rated version, anyway.
When it comes to Greendale, it seems like opinions are particularly entrenched--not to say polarized--among rusties. Having recently watched the "Return to Greendale" clip of Falling from Above (now up on Youtube), I find myself in the camp of "Wow, it's nice to be reminded how powerful this music is".
Sure, the staging is a little hokey and contrived... and I'm guessing there isn't perfect overlap between the Neil crowd and musical theatre fans, so yymv on the whole concept... but I'd argue that, on balance, it's no weirder or campier than Rust Never Sleeps Live. Apparently, we're all either cool with the roadeyes, Rust-o-Vision, and oversized amps, or else we're just willing to overlook these things because the music is just that good.
