Weld Series + Sneaks Coming to Neil Young Archives

Neil Young has announced new release packages coming on New Series | NYA.

The "Weld Series" and "Sneaks" are just the latest plans for NYA, as The Archives continues to evolve and grow. Also, the previously announced 2020 releases now have placeholders on the Timeline.(Thanks Babbo!)

Image via Rusted Moon via NYA

  • Homegrown, April 18 (Record Store Day (details)
  • Return to Greendale, June 19 (details)
  • Archives Vol. 2, July 24 (details)
  • Rust Bucket, Oct. 16 (details)
  • Young Shakespeare, Nov. 27 (details)

Other noteworthy items are that NYA is on track to the next subscriber level of 25,000 with a goal of 40,000.

"Tonight's The Night" - WELD

Regarding the "Weld Series", the 1st release will be from Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, New York, on 1991-02-16. A preview clip was posted recently on NYA of "Campaigner" from Buffalo which indicates that this will be a performance oriented release concert as opposed to the original WELD release which contained vast amounts of audience reaction. Apparently, Manager Elliot Roberts was quite opposed to the WELD editing that favored audience over band. Neil seems to be correcting this decision by saying: "Well Elliot, you got it. Better late than never my old friend."

Also, a "Sneaks Series" is coming featuring a limited 24 hours only posting of some NYA rarity. These will be unscheduled pop-ups and a "Sneak" is planned to be posted "very soon."

UPDATE: The 1st "Sneak" has now been posted of a preview audio clip of the unreleased 1989 version of F*!#in' Up from Saturday Night Live (Thanks Scotsman!)

That is awesome news. I attended the 2/16/91 Buffalo show and it was spectacular. So much looking forward to the Like A Hurricane video that is only included on the album not the VHS that I've had for years. It's great their removing the audience scenes from it too to just focus on the Horse. The Campaigner version is great to see from Buffalo, only played twice out of the 53 shows in '91. The questions sent in to Neil have definitely changed his opinion on how to get releases out to his fans. Its going to be another good Neil year for new releases and NYA stuff. Thanks NYA & Neil.

yes, very promising news, indeed, Soldier Steve.

So if memory serves here, was it not you who wrote about playing in Buffalo and the Weld release? Suggesting something like the WELD series?

Right, that Neil is listening to his fans. definitely a new era.

In a way, it was neil doing things his way that got him this far. we've accepted that it's ok to now cater to his fan base as he blazes off into the sunset way down the road.

It's difficult to keep up with Neil's activity lately.

I cannot imagine who could possibly join CH if/when Nils leaves to tour with Bruce.

But Neil says 'we have a plan'.

ok then...how about those tour dates?

If Nils can't make the tour I would think Warren Haynes might fill the void in a very nice way. Check out the two Halloween tribute titled "Young Mule" shows to see where I'm coming from here.

The Buffalo 91 show is available on wolfgangs vault.

Planned 2020 release dates now posted on the timeline: Homegrown, April 18 (Record Store Day); Return to Greendale, June 19; Archives Vol. 2, July 24; Rust Bucket, Oct. 16; Young Shakespeare, Nov. 27. All sounds too good to be true (and just might be, guess we'll see).

At 3/10/2020 05:20:00 AM, Blogger John said...

Even if it’s only partly true, that is a very exciting schedule!

At 3/10/2020 06:35:00 AM, Blogger Flyingscotzman said...

JormaFan: good point, but I think the shows on Wolfgang's Vault are (mostly) best avoided. They are often soundboard recordings with severe issues. For instance, the Buffalo 1991 show is missing Poncho's guitar on several songs.

That said, those songs aside, the Buffalo Wolfgang recording is reasonable quality compared to most of the others, but still not as enjoyable as a good audience tape from this awesome tour.

I can understand why Neil doesn't want this sort of stuff (unofficial soundboard recordings) out there: it alters the music by excluding instruments and fundamentally changing the mix (a good, *clean and balanced* soundboard recording is an entirely different story, which can often sound great with a bit of polish to add back in the sound of the arena).

Currently the best way to enjoy the magnificent Weld tour, apart from the official release (which in its Young/Talbot mix sounds a lot better than McDonough's Shakey implies) is through the audience videos of shows like Hartford, Uniondale, Atlanta, New York etc. Many of the other shows, such as the first LA Sports Arena gig and Westpoint, also now circulate as very decent audio recordings. Many of these shows feature the most intense versions of Like A Hurricane and Cortez The Killer that have ever been recorded. Neil's lead guitar is off-the-scale.

Excitingly, Neil has multitrack recordings of several of these shows, including some that weren't included on the official album such as Las Vegas and Phoenix.

I think this is the most thrilling Crazy Horse tour of all time. And that's a pretty bold statement. Releasing some whole shows as videos would be a real treat for the fans. If necessary after a few weeks I'll be (politely) pestering Neil and the patient ladies and gentlemen at NYA to make sure they stick with this. Which I'm sure will be about as effective as digging for gold in my back yard, but anyway.

I'm impressed by the way Neil and his crew have approached this website, incidentally. It's taken a long while to get out of first gear. But the rare videos have been excellent, the articles on the Contrarian enjoyable, and overall it feels like he's stuck with it and is now starting to make something special out of it. I was concerned he's spending too much money on it: this of course is none of my business, but it would also be a problem from our perspective because it will limit how long it remains afloat, long term. It's one of those things I want to see grow and develop, not be abandoned the moment the wind changes. I think there is so much potential. And if he does come through with all these projects this year then we are really in for some treats.

Abner: I read your comment to me a few a few pages back: please do keep us updated on your interesting research.

Factory farming, intensive confinement and slaughter of animals etc can be a very depressing subject, I have found. But taking a close look at it is going to be crucial as we go onward. The vegan movement I am finding to be encouraging, and in truth I think there is little that we can do (as individuals) more important than leaving animals off of our plates, in terms of a vote for the environment as well as animal welfare.

Jonathan: Rock musicians come out of retirement with roughly the same frequency as Mafia Dons. I don't know why Poncho had to withdraw from the 2018 mini-tour. I hope he is okay. And if he *is* okay, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him back. And that would be genuinely fantastic news, with no disrespect at all to Nils (an absolute master of his instrument).

When it comes to Neil I am a completist, so I don’t care what’s on Archive two. I will enjoy everything it contains. Looks like a expensive year.

There are obviouslly three albums in NYA Vol.2 that are already released: Tuscaloosa, Judy and Roxy. Maybe Neil's "can"-list is an indicator what else will be part of Vol.2

At 3/10/2020 07:29:00 PM, Blogger Dan Swan said...

@Dionys, I’m really hoping that Neil doesn’t make us double dip on Volume 2. It seems to me that the repeats were the one thing wrong about Volume 1. I don’t understand the justification for adding something already available in the Archive release. Redundant, if you ask me. But, what do I know?

Peace.

...the preview clip of F*!#in' Up isn't specifically from the SNL show itself, but most likely the studio sessions at the Hit Factory (I think) that precedeed the TV broadcast.

The original plan had been to do the SNL performance with Poncho as well as Rick Rosas and Chad Cromwell, but one or the other was not available and therefore Neil needed a new band.

Rick, incidentally, wasn't entirely thrilled by this development.

Anyway, the studio sessions this take of F*!#in' Up was recorded at gave Neil chance to do some recording whilst also warming the new band up for the live TV broadcast of Rockin' In The Free World etc.

@Scotzman: great information on the snippet from F%*@:n up. You never cease to amaze me with your knowledge of the Neil universe. The results of this line up speaks for itself as they blew everyone’s mind that night. I wish we could have heard this whole rehearsal as it sounded ragged and intense.

Peace.

Dan: It would be interesting to know what else they recorded! Though according to producer/engineer Niko Bolas (interviewed in McDonough's Shakey) the sessions didn't produce very much and weren't as exciting as the live performance.

I love this alternate lyric to F*!#in' Up. Surprised it hasn't (as far as I know) reappeared since.

#Dan
being a completist sort of myself I am also obsessed with lists of my musical belongings, so I count three Fillmore East CD-Versions: The first that came out, then the CD/DVD combination and another one that was included in NYA Vol.1. I count two specimen of the Sugar Mountain release my own, not to mention a fair number of vinyl only or CD-Maxi only items, that later were released as part of the real deal (Broken Arrow with Interstate or without anyone?). And what to make of some essential tracks like "Don't spook the horse" which really was hard to get and will most likely end up on the Ragged Glory extended version? Young Shakespeare Fandom really is love's labour lost.

I completely agree with your situation. I have the same duplicates you have mentioned. I was fortunate to acquire Don’t Spook The Horse when it was released. For some reason I have been unable to let go of the duplicate releases. Loves labor lost indeed.

Scotsman, the goals you are talking about are hard to reach in this part of the world. The assumption is that there is no end of pork or beef. And no one sees the animals suffer. The feeder pigs, as they are called, live their entire lives indoors.
