PODCAST: David Crosby Talks Neil Young & More | ‘Freak Flag Flying’

David Crosby is interviewed by Steve Silberman in the podcast ‘Freak Flag Flying’.

Crosby discusses Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash:
David Crosby: “I don’t think it’s going to happen,” Crosby responds. “The thing to do is be grateful for what there was. There was a period of time there when we really did make some very good music together and I’m grateful for it. I think everybody has to deal with their life as it coms to them and if those guys are stuck where they are, they’re stuck where they are. I’m trying real hard not to be.”
Crosby also discusses political protest music:
David Crosby:“If Neil (Young) calls me up and says ‘listen, we’ve got to do some gigs … now that Elizabeth Warren is our candidate we’ve got to do some gigs for her in battleground states, what do you think?’ I’d say ‘what time does the bus leave?,'” David notes. “I’d work it out, I don’t care if [Graham] Nash likes me or not. The purpose would exceed all of that.”

Crosby discusses Judy Collins and Jerry Garcia, as well.

We watched the latest Crosby documentary, and I must say that David has no problem admitting to his mistakes in life, but unfortunately he just can’t seem to bring himself to ever apologize for his behavior. I suppose some people would be okay with that, but admitting to something is different from owning it. To apologize to the people he’s hurt over the years would allow him to acknowledge that he understood the pain he brought to his friends. I think he would be able to build a bridge of friendship by allowing those people to understand that he can truly own it. Perhaps then he could heal not only their hearts but his own as well.

I'm not taking Crosby's side or anything, but he did make an apology to Neil & Daryl on the Howard Stern show back in May of 2015. His mouth before brain problem has always gotten him in trouble with old friends and associates, hence all the new acquaintances in his life. Of course, I hope Neil tours this year either solo, with Crazy Horse or with POTR. I also wouldn't mind seeing CSNY hit the trail one last time in a "Vote Your Conscience" tour. But, that's doubtful.
Cheers! ✌️

In "Echo in the Canyon," Crosby deflects all the reasons he left the Byrds. Instead, he said that h had to leave the Byrds because "I was an asshole." Has much changed over the past 50+ years? He continues to be the mouth that bores, with apologies that sound like "I'm sorry if you feel offended," which denies ownership of his behavior.

Finally, his judgemental comments to Nash and Young weren't something trivial, such as they wouldn't let him play a certain song. His criticisms were about their partners old and new, and were expressed with contempt.

As Hunter Thompson said: "Buy the ticket, take the ride." Crosby bought the ticket to alonesville, and he has to take that ride.

I too saw Echo in the Canyon and was again struck by David’s hollow apologies. They are noncommittal and basically say “sorry you can’t deal with me the way I want you to”. That is a deflection not a apology. He refuses to admit that he’s the problem, not the people he hurts.

I don’t have any judgment towards David Crosby, I’m taking about accountability for oneself. I’ve made more than my share of mistakes in life and spent a lot of time doing what David has been doing and it doesn’t work. One needs to own their words and behavior and take responsibility for how they effect the people around them and so far as I can tell, David hasn’t got there yet. I hope he can someday for his sake.

Why all the Crosby hate? I think he has apologized as much as a human could, and has accepted that his musical path leads elsewhere. It sounds like you want him on his knees begging before you'll accept that.
And as far as the music goes? I saw him live last year and have his latest albums and I certainly listen and like them more than what Neil has put out in the last 10 years. Seems like the break with CSN has worked out for him more than for the rest of the band.

Yeah, I listened to the Podcast today and it's greatly entertaining. The Wall Song with the Grateful Dead is spectacular, and a reminder of how great David Crosby was in those days. If that band had stayed in that configuration two things would have happened; 1) they would have made 3 of the best LP's ever and 2) Jerry and David would have died before 1980. With regards to CSNY, he does not sound bitter, he still loves Stills, he is enjoying his life right now, he deserves that.

This isn't directed solely at David Crosby but if 40 years of full time employment has taught me anything it's not to take advice from anyone who hasn't owned an alarm clock.

@ Willforestwater: no one here hates David Crosby. Quite the opposite actually. Perhaps you aren’t reading the posts correctly, but I for one still enjoy David’s music and very happy for his late life renaissance. My point is that he could be even happier if he was to accept his responsibility instead of deflecting it. I know he has apologized. He’s not a bad person.

I grew up on CSN and have always loved Neil but I cringe when it comes to CSNY ... it crowds Neil something awful
Subtraction by addition to the max ... it’s kinda sad that 50 years later they’re like children fighting but it is what it is ... Crosby doesn’t seem to care enough to change and his own success probably means he doesn’t have to beg Neil for a payday tour ... NYCH isn’t getting younger no need to disrupt that or Neil solo or w POTR which is as good as it gets these days.

Dan makes a good distinction between admitting mistakes and "owning" those mistakes. I grew up in the shadow of the hippy dream and always saw the totally corrupt side of it. People who conflated peace and love with "doing whatever the hell they wanted" which included neglecting and disregarding basic responsibilities. Hence my everlasting affection for "Down by the River" which fully articulates the emotions and feelings within my discursive points. There is nothing shameful in a failed revolt. Such endeavors generally fail in the face of what is being revolted against. But Crosby, in my opinion, somehow got stuck in the adolescent fantasy of never really facing the full limits of his own talent, self-expression, or general sense of himself. I regard him as a full blown fool and a complete and total asshole. Of course, this does not mean he has no insight. Echo in The Canyon clearly shows that he does have some insight but then nothing that will have the gravitas of full self awareness and the interpretation of events in relation to that self-awareness. Crosby will never produce art like Down by the River. He can't. I know this is harsh but believe me when I say I know the corrupt side of the hippy dream, it damn near killed me.

@Abner Snopes: Harsh or not you make a very insightful observation in “self awareness and the interpretation of events in relation to that self-awareness“. I completely understand what you’re saying. That self awareness is key.

I was the 3rd commenter above. Agree or disagree with the comments, everyone contributed something to the conversation without any troll like behavior. It's a credit to TW adherents that we had an emotional, meaningful discourse about Crosby. I am honored to be among you. Keep on rockin' in the free world.... (but not at a Trump rally)
