PRE-SALE NOW: Pacific Northwest Concert Dates Added + Neil Young's Solo "Big 3M Theater Tour": Setlist Analysis

Neil Young's Solo "Big 3M Theater Tour" Setlists
Sugar Mountain | Chronological Grid

We started this post as a setlist analysis of Neil Young's Solo "Big 3M Theater Tour", but he just announced that Pacific Northwest concert dates have been added. PRE-SALE NOW: More below on that.

But 1st, setlist analysis and statistics for all of our Neil data nerds out there via our good buddy Tom on Sugar Mountain.

Over the course of just 6 concerts in Milwaukee, Madison, and Minneapolis (3M):

  • 120 songs
  • 51 unique songs
  • 3 New Songs:
    • (Green Is Blue)
    • (Olden Days)
    • (Truth Kills)
  • Running Dry (Requiem For The Rockets) - 1st concert performance - 2019-01-29
  • Alabama - 1st solo performance - 2019-01-31
  • F*!#in' Up - 1st acoustic performance - 2019-01-29
  • Like A Hurricane - 3rd acoustic performance - 2019-01-23

And last but not least, 6 "Thrasher"'s in a row! Every single night. Note "Thrasher" comment below on Night #4 in MPLS by Unknown Dad:
First time Long time as they say...

Saw 3 of the 4 shows this week...was great to have NY back locally after a 9 year drought. Brought my 12 year old son to the first and last shows. He is very passionate about R&R, and was great to share this with him.

Regarding Truth Kills, Neil introduced as a topical song...at end he commented as it was a story about kids, and how easily they can see the truth. Led to a good car chat on way home. Opening riff sort of in the vein of 'My My Hey Hey'...

Lyrics i can recall: - The Water Wars are coming...It;s gonna take more than a couple of storms to make life worth living as the planet warms - Don't want to be great again, first time was good enough - truth kills in a world of lies, so I'll be speaking up Etc.

- Don't be Denied was incredible.

- Neil had wrong harmonica for Thrasher which he realized too late. So he played a guitar instrumental instead. then after song he put the right harmonica in then redid the instrumental.

- My son wanted Cortez and he got it.

So I get the impression the live stream for Crazy Horse featuring Nils Lofgren might be tomorrow or the next night and since it is a 7:30 CST time then it will start at 8:30 EST. With Neil does that mean maybe 8:40 EST or so? Guess I'll have to watch the NYA Facebook page for late breaking news.

Hope at some point we get an email alert and I do think it would be fair to have it stream for 24 hours since this is a planet earth live stream with all the time zones. Do think I'm already getting my monies worth with NYA this early in the subscription!

Remember the first LP I ever ordered to have on the day it came out was in 1971 the debut of Grin (Spindizzy/Epic). Was so happy to have that and played it a lot. It was great hearing Neil, Danny and Ralph on background vocals on that first Grin, too. However, I've never been able to see a Grin or Nils Lofgren show my entire life. Did see Nils in the E-Street band several times but still hope someday to see him do a show.

Yes, fuckin up has been done acoustic many times in '89 and '92 acoustic tours. Remember in '92 Neil said it was Bill Clinton's campaign song.

@Jim: No guarantees, but NYA previously indicated the Winnipeg stream would be from the Burton Cummings Theatre on Sunday (Feb. 3). Show starts at 8:30 EST - unclear if there's an opener, the Cummings website says it will be a solo set followed by a Horse set so maybe not.

@Pabst: Latest word on NYA was "several shows in Germany this June and July" with POTR, dates TBA.

OK, just saw confirmation that William Prince is opening both nights in Winnipeg, followed by Neil solo and then the Horse. So the stream should start around 9:30-9:40 EST.

So only the CH portion is to be streamed and NOT NY solo b4?
makes no sense.....
I also read after the winnipeg shows were announced as NY Solo, they were changed to CH shows & some dude wrote to Neil complaining he bought an up close ticket fer his kid b/c he thought it was to be solo & NOT CH. The response @ that time was NY was considering opening solo?
Either whichway is fine w/me. Kinda reminds me of the way Neil USED to start a CH show BUT I don't get why the solo portion would not be live streamed as well?
I am just looking fer ANY excuse to NOT watch the "Super"bowl......

Both Neil solo and Horse sets should be streamed. If William Prince starts on time at 8:30 EST, would assume Neil goes on at 9:30-9:40.

From the Centennial Concert Hall website: Neil Young is returning to his native Winnipeg for two special performances at the city’s premiere intimate concert venues – the Burton Cummings Theatre on February 3 and Centennial Concert Hall on February 4. He will be performing both shows in two of his fans’ most beloved formats, solo and with his long-time collaborators Crazy Horse.

If you go to Crazy Horse's Wikipedia page, Nils is now listed as a current member of the Horse. Poncho is listed under "former members". Not sure how I feel about this. Nothing against Nils, he's fantastic, I just don't want to think of Poncho as a "former member" of Crazy Horse.

At 2/03/2019 06:38:00 AM, Blogger Flyingscotzman said...

After 40 years and hundreds of shows, Poncho misses 7 club gigs and is promptly declared to be a "former" member.

This way at looking at things is a common affliction among short-sighted Neil Young fans, called "The Magpie Effect".

I love both these versions of Crazy Horse (as well as the short-lived Danny Whitten line-up), and Nils is a fantastic side-man and guitarist. But I believe the chemistry between the members of this band is so vital to the power of its music that each line-up should have it's own name (even if only a subtle change).

When the "new" Nils line-up was announced last year it was universally referred to as NYCH, and that's as functional a title as any.

Scotsman.

At 2/03/2019 06:57:00 AM, Blogger Babbo B. said...

NYCH was just an abbreviation on a marquee, the shows were billed and sold as Neil Young and Crazy Horse, just as the Winnipeg shows are now. (And it takes more than someone's Wikipedia edit to make Poncho a former member.)

At 2/03/2019 07:34:00 AM, Blogger Flyingscotzman said...

The current lineup was referred to here and on Neil's site as NYCH, which strikes me as good a name as any. Anyway, it's irrelevant. The important bit is to differentiate between the two line-ups, see them as seperate entities; as closely linked as they are.

My point is not at all to dismiss the current line-up. They sounded superb last year, as you'd expect. But just to acknowledge that it is in fact a different band to the standard line-up we've known over the last 40 years.

Scotsman.

At 2/03/2019 08:21:00 AM, Blogger rolandthompsongunner said...

Agreed, it was superb. And if there's anyone on the planet I'd want to fill Poncho's shoes...it's Nils.

I was watching Change Your Mind from the Complex Sessions and a 2001 sweaty version of Cortez to get in the mood. They're amazing versions, thanks in large part to Poncho being so locked in and knowing when not to play, when to play very subtle rhythm, etc.

But this doesn't lessen my excitement for tonight. Really hoping for the live stream, I actually took work off tomorrow and it has nothing to do with the Super Bowl.

At 2/03/2019 08:22:00 AM, Blogger Richie Cruz said...

For me, if Billy and Ralphie are there, it's Crazy Horse. They were there from the beginning, from the doo-wap days. I consider Danny, Poncho, and Nils all part of the Horse, as well as Jack Nitzschie and even Ben Keith (I think Tonight's the Night a "Crazy Horse" album).

And for me, there are no "former" members. It's all one song and they're all one band.

The next two nights in Winnipeg are gonna be rockin.

At 2/03/2019 08:47:00 AM, Blogger Flyingscotzman said...

Right! But it's still a different version, a different band, with a different sound signature. It's not one line-up masquerading as another, but two separate things.

Of course there are notable similarities too. But Poncho and Nils' guitar tones are vastly different, the way Neil responds to them musically is different, the band dynamic and chemistry is completely changed.

As Neil says in Year Of The Horse:

"Everybody has got to be there for it to happen. For this sound to happen we (Neil, Billy, Ralph, Poncho) have all got to be together. So I just really want to take advantage of the time we have to do it...cause the older we get the more we realise how special it is".

I think that is as true of the Nils line-up as it clearly is for the classic "hard rock" Poncho line-up. Nils is a class musician. The chemistry of both bands is palpable. But it's not the same chemistry. And therefore, it's a different band.

Scotsman.

We've just seen how relevant he can still be on his softer side. Now I want all the gentility and subtleness of Godzilla decapitating a Tokyo skyscraper. Open with a balls-out spectacle of Rock & Roll : Rockin in the Free World . or a blistering Sedan Delivery. I couldn't care less what he calls it. But if he wanted to open w Big Time again I'm totally good w that. I love that song and the Broken Arrow record. about 12.5 hrs away now.

I love Sedan Delivery, but can't see him doing it without Poncho. Yes, the choice of band members does have an influence. So I'm guessing the choices will be made with Nils in mind.

But of course, all bets are off. I expect some surprises.

No one is more mercurial or subject to whim than NY (duh). For me its hard to imagine Fuckin Up w/out Frank Sampedro. IMO to call him Poncho says I know him, of course I do not. Yet it was a staple last May and always w POTR. When they played Rock in Rio 2001, a very big gig SD was the rousing opener. Someone who was there once told me after Oasis had played many were leaving. When NYCH launched into SD it was a near riot and tsunami of ppl flooding back in. I dont know if thats true. Could be. Agreed part of the fun is the surprise and the speculation of whats to come.

At 2/03/2019 11:04:00 AM, Blogger Flyingscotzman said...

In 2014, Poncho emailed Neil to say he thought the show (with Tablot-less Crazy Horse) needed a stronger middle section with songs like Into The Black and Sedan Delivery. Neil's reply was reported as:'That's not who we are. We aren't that band. If we try and pretend to be that band, we'll just lose'.

So clearly band chemistry is something that Neil has paid close attention to. Though I do think we are at a point when almost anything could be pulled from the hat.

Fair point, F*!#in' Up does get played a lot with other bands. It almost always sounds flat and underpowered though.

Re: fun nicknames, I'll start calling him Mr Sampedro when he becomes a bank manager.

At 2/03/2019 01:52:00 PM, Blogger Flyingscotzman said...

Anon: Best way to demonstrate that is to have a listen!

Poncho (in a live setting) is best known for his punchy, brick-wall guitar tone. On Weld, listen to the guitar mostly in the left headphone; that's Poncho signature tone. He uses guitar strings as thick as tree trunks, and musically he brings what Neil described as a "massive amount of strength" to the band.

Theres an edge and attitude to his playing (and personality) that tempers the laidbackness of Ralph and lumberingness of Billy. It's just a perfect combination of personalities and sounds. He's also a surprisingly sophisticated player, as demonstrated beautifully by the album version of Change Your Mind on Sleeps With Angels.

Nils is a guitar virtuso who, when playing with Neil, nevertheless tends to also opt for a very minimalistic sound. But it's not the same "hard rock" wall-of-sound effect that you get with Poncho and Neil. His guitar parts are sparser and more fluid, light-on-their-feet, with Neil's guitar taking center-stage; and Billy's bass being cranked up in the mix to fill in the extra room.

Nils is a multi-instrumentalist, whereas Poncho specialises only in guitar.

So overall the Poncho line-up has more of an edgy, gritty, hard-rock sound. A bigger sound. It's probably the hardcore version of the two. The Nils line-up is not light years away, but it's a little more fluid and relaxed sounding, lacking the sheer guts and intensity of the classic line-up but bringing more in the way of diversity and dynamics.

wsanjose01: Those Sedan Deliveries were in 2013 I think, when Talbot was still in the band. By the time Rick took over, the setlist had been radically shaken up.

I’m with you Richard. And don’t forget Stars N Bars, Crazy Horse + Ben Keith, my favourite colour of Horse!
In fact I always wondered why Ben Keith didn’t pick up the reins after Danny passed away? You had TTN, then Winterlong and Walk On recorded as a trio with the Horse rhythm section. But it really hit home when No Hidden Path came out with old Ben playing a real rhythm guitar, standing up, and my favourite rhythm guitar on a Neil song since Down By The River!!!!

At 2/03/2019 03:44:00 PM, Blogger Flyingscotzman said...

Good question. I'm not sure Ben even considered himself a guitar player back then. His rhythm guitar playing was quite rudimentary. With his real talent being total mastery of the steel guitar/dobro.

My personal preference is slightly towards the more "hard rock" sound of the Poncho era, over the more laid back line-ups. But Ben's jangly telecaster tone was a good fit for the more countrified bands, in particular, and No Hidden Path with the Electric Band was certainly a highlight.

The Grateful Dead went thruogh many different lineup changes, and they were always the Grateful Dead, until Jerry died at least.

Crazy Horse will always be Crazy Horse, especially as long as Talbot and Molina are laying down the foundation. Even the Poncho Crazy Horse has gone through many changes. 1976 Crazy Horse sounds different than 1984, which sounds different than 1991, which sounds different than 2013.

Any band that's been around this long is bound to sound different as the years go on, at least you hope that's the case. Otherwise, that's one stale band.

It's all one band, it's all Crazy Horse. And they're gonna be riding again tonight!

At 2/03/2019 05:52:00 PM, Blogger Flyingscotzman said...

I understand the comparison to the Grateful Dead, but I'm not sure it is the right one; as they didn't have the same consistent line-up for 40 years. So it's a different thing.

If Billy or Ralph need to be there for it to be considered (the same) Crazy Horse, then why not Poncho? After all, he's been in the band for 4 decades. So it opens a can of worms.

A name is just a name, but what I like is that it does give each line-up a place to hang their own hats, their own particular niche to dominate:

"This is who we are. This is what we do".

Sampedro hits the nail on the head here, with his observations on the 2014 tour: "We build in intensity as tours go on. This past tour seemed to be a little softer. It wasn’t Crazy Horse (without Billy). It just wasn’t. You can’t say it was Crazy Horse. I know all the tickets were sold and that’s what it said and that’s what it was, but you take away one member that’s how delicate the balance is".

The flipside of course is that the 2014 band were a great band in their own right, just like the 2018/2019 line-up of Crazy Horse is a great band. I'm thrilled about these concerts with Nils. But to consider them all to be the same group is to render the name meaningless. So I think there is room for some nuance here.

Scotsman.

At 2/03/2019 06:47:00 PM, Blogger Richie Cruz said...

I'm not sure how having different members makes a group name "meaningless", but I'm guesing no matter what I say, you're idea of Crazy Horse is with Poncho, and anything else shouldn't be called Crazy Horse, and I'm gonna keep saying something else, and that's how it is.

For the third time I'll say it, if Billy and Ralphie are there, it's Crazy Horse. Of course Poncho felt the way he did in 2014, Billy wasn't there, so it wasn't the Horse.

I'm not trying to argue with you, but I feel like I am, and I'm not into that. Especially with a Crazy Horse show about to happen.
