**Please note revised on-sale ticket date in the following release**

December 9th, 2013 -(Burbank, CA.) Neil Young has announced that he will perform four benefit shows in his native Canada to raise money for the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) Legal Defense Fund. The "Honor The Treaties" concert dates are listed below. A very special guest, Diana Krall, will also perform on each of the dates. Tickets will go on sale Tuesday December 13th.

Sun Jan 12 Toronto Massey Hall
Thur Jan 16 Winnipeg Centennial Concert Hall
Fri Jan 17 Regina Conexus Arts Centre
Sun Jan 19 Calgary Jack Singer Concert Hall

The ACFN refer to themselves as K'ai Taile Dene, meaning "people of the land of the willow." A Legal Defense fund was set up to support the ACFN's legal challenges against oil companies and government that are obstructing their traditional lands and rights. As people of the land the ACFN have used and occupied their traditional lands in the Athabasca region for thousands of years, hunting, trapping, fishing and gathering to sustain themselves and continue spiritual cultural rights passed down through generations. The ACFN's legal challenges will ensure the protection of their traditional lands, eco-systems and unique rights guaranteed by Treaty 8, the last and largest of the nineteenth century land agreements made between First Nations and the Government of Canada, are upheld for the benefit of future generations.

Tickets for the Canadian concerts will range from $55.00 through $250.00 and will be limited to 4 tickets per person. Tickets for all performances go on sale Friday, December 13/13.

In Calgary, tickets available at www.livenation.com, Charge-By-Phone 403-294-9494 and in-person at Epcor Centre.

For more info on the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, please visit: http://www.acfn.com/.
From The Canadian Press by Bob Weber:
"The theme of the concerts is honour the treaties," said Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation spokeswoman Eriel Deranger. "All the ticket sales, all the proceeds from the concerts, not a single cent goes to anyone other than (the First Nation)."

Young's gesture is by far the largest, said Deranger. The band hadn't even asked for support during his brief visit in early September.

"When he left, we didn't ask him. We were kind of surprised by his, 'I'm going to do something for you.' We've heard that before.

"It's fantastic to have someone follow through and giving directly to a community, the grassroots people."

The Athabasca Chipewyan band is gearing up for a major legal fight against the latest oilsands development to be approved.

The federal government announced on Friday that Shell Canada's Jackpine mine expansion could go ahead. The approval came before a 35-day delay to give the band a chance to make its concerns known to Ottawa had expired.

The review panel that looked at the project concluded it would create irreversible environmental damage. It said Jackpine would mean the permanent loss of thousands of hectares of wetlands, which would harm migratory birds, caribou and other wildlife and wipe out traditional plants used for generations.

It also said Shell's plans for mitigation are unproven and warned that some impacts would probably approach levels that the environment couldn't support.

The company has purchased about 730 hectares of former cattle pasture in northwestern Alberta to help compensate for the 8,500 hectares of wetland that will be lost forever.
Shell has said the expansion will double its production and create 750 jobs.

Deranger said the band plans to file legal action against the development in January.

"The finances that will come from (the concerts) will be beneficial," she said. "This type of financial fundraising strategy with such a big name can make or break our ability to move forward with a large legal strategy."

Geraldine Anderson of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers said Young is welcome to voice his opinion.

"We would also encourage Mr. Young and his fans to learn about the innovation and technical advances that are helping to develop oilsands and develop (them) responsibly."

The benefit concerts are to be held Jan. 12 in Toronto (Massey Hall), Jan. 16 in Winnipeg (Centennial Concert Hall), Jan. 17 in Regina (Conexus Arts Centre) and Jan. 19 in Calgary (Jack Singer Concert Hall).
Deranger said the news is a huge emotional boost to the band.

"Sometimes we feel as though our work and our struggle is going unnoticed. But when you have the backing and support of people like Neil Young, it revitalizes the spirit of the community and strengthens our struggles to move forward."
Also, Neil Young and Crazy Horse will headline an outdoor concert at London's Hyde Park on Saturday July 12, 2014, per NME.

Neil's part of the one percenters. Stick a green label on it and they have special dispensation to fly all over and hold events that by their very nature consume huge amounts of petroleum. See, they have special knowledge and wisdom that we poor regular schmucks lack. Don't ask what they do, just pay attention to what they say and be grateful.

Oops. Never mind that ACDEN, owned by the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, is a close business partner to the major oil sands producers, which they proudly acknowledge, making hundreds of millions od dollars. Google their webpage. Bit of a conflict, I'd say.

What does that have to do with honoring treaties? You can't work with something that exists while also fighting to make sure it doesn't further encroach upon your historic lands?

Neil is in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Criticized if he does something, criticized if he doesn't do something.

Don't go if you don't support it, but don't be whiney either.

Same comments crop up on every article, on every website any time there's ANYTHING even remotely against the oilsands or appearing to be against the oilsands development. It's like clockwork. People who support it cannot fathom or accept that not everyone does.

I'm sure the comments will just get worse. Luckily Neil couldn't care less what you say.

"You can't work with something that exists while also fighting to make sure it doesn't further encroach upon your historic lands?"
That's a case of NIMBY if I ever heard one. This tribe is one of the biggest enablers of the oilsands, making vast profits on it, even helping to maintain the operations' oil-powered vehicle fleets. They're happy to profit as long as it's not on their land. It's whiney to point out the hypocrisy of one side, but noble to point it out of the other side? I don't think so.
"People who support it cannot fathom or accept that not everyone does." What are you talking about? This very tribe supports it, except when they don't. As for Neil, he wants to shut down the oilsands, period. If he can use treaty rights, whatever. He's so ill-informed on the matter. He just posted to his website from his Hawaii estate, with multiple houses on it that he uses lots of jet-fuel to get to and from, about off-the-charts air pollution in China. Super hypocrite. He has no credibility. He's nearly a billionaire, made from oil. He hasn't walked the walk ever, though he's been aware of the problem for decades. Lincvolt is a boutique project to satisfy a rich man's love of cars and tinkering. Remember how he took many chartered flights from concerts to Kansas during its development? Unspeakable hypocrisy. When's the last time Neil talked about his green job and his solar-powered houses and his family's non-polluting cars and his refusal to use much jet travel? He doesn't have any answers. He's just against.

@SD - The doubters are out in full force with the courage of their anonymous accounts behind them.

Once again, using the ad hominen, fact free attacks to make their points.

The denialists know they are on the wrong side of history.

Honor The Treaties.

One of the things most admirable about NY has been that he's a man of his word.

We wonder if those who attack here are also honoring their commitments? Their marriage vows? Their pledges? Their duty to uphold the Constitution?

We somehow feel that the attackers do not hold some moral high ground here upon which to cast aspersions.

Finally, if this is all so wrong, what are their solutions? Specifically?

Crying "hypocrisy" at every perceived injustice is not proposing a solution. Usually its only the the hypocrites who cry hypocrisy the loudest.

Dismiss us as doubters, but it won't change the facts. Who's denying? If the planet's situation is so dire, then clearly Neil needs to quit touring, sell off some houses and settle down instead of schlepping huge numbers of people around the planet and inviting hundreds of thousands more to drive and fly in to see him . The internet removed long ago the need to be physically present.

@Anon 10:37:00 - say what?? Read what you wrote. That makes no sense what so ever.

Again, you come here telling Neil what he shouldn't do. This about what you would do.

Are you implying that sitting at home solves problems?

Are you implying that its OK to violate treaties?

Because that's what we're hearing.

C'mon. Walk with us. Be part of the solution. Because if you're not part of the solution, then ...

Thrasher,

Anonymous has some very good points but to expand a little further, since the treaty issues tend and Global Cooling, (sorry) Global Warming (Sorry), uh Climate Change, should we not try our best to choke off the demand for Carbon producing products???

Should we not impose a large tax on the citizens of the planet who produce large amount of carbon to produce and sell products that add no value in terms of our basic needs (food and shelter)?? We could start by putting a 90% tax on Artists, Entertainers, musicians etc.

Why would we not impose this tax??

Would chocking off the demand not send the price of the product to zero which would cause companies to halt drilling???

Please, all Thrashers Wheat posters band together and stop purchasing Neil Young products (and any other Artist of your choosing). Buy your entertainment locally!! Local Artists have the lowest carbon footprint and all money goes toward providing modest shelter and food for the entertainer!!!

Do not be the one to allow Neil to contribute to the destruction of the planet. Lets band together to get this done!

Neil, your carbon intensive life style makes you look like a joke!!

Neil, this Notes for you.

My read on Neil is he's not saying we have to stay home and give up our lives because of 'climate change' ... I think he's saying that we should find smarter and cleaner ways to do what we do ... thats why Lincoln Volt is like 19 feet long, he's showing us that you can even drive a big old rig as long as its done cleanly ... the faulty part of the anon's argument is that if you believe in climate change then you must cease all use of fossil fuels, ect... and hence are suggesting Neil's some kind of hypocrite for living his life ... The facts are just the opposite, Neil's saying you can live your life and there's technology out there to live it cleaner BUT special interests are impeding the commercialization of these technologies ... so he's using his voice, his celebrity, his money, his ideas, his time, his ingenuity to effect change ... thats the very opposite of hypocrisy ... first he realized that 'just singing a song won't change the world' then he dedicated himself to doing something about it ... its fair to have an intelligent debate about how much humans are to blame for climate change and about climate change itself but its hard to argue against someone (Neil) who is acting on his beliefs by investing on so many levels in making a difference ... I'm not familiar with the issues regarding these natives for whom Neil is doing a benefit but we can all pretty much agree that Western man has basically stolen their lands for hundreds of years ... whether they are benefitting from Big Oil in one way or another shouldn't be connected with their right to a treaty being honored ... from what I can tell Neil deserves a humanitarian award not some scorn ... don't forget the guy is almost 70 years old and he's going on the road for multiple days to places hours and hours away ... I promise this won't help his ticket sales, or his album sales, it won't pad his legacy ... there's nothing in it for him ... this is the true definition of sincere giving, we should all take notes, get inspired, and do likewise in our own lives.

@02:03:00 - a bicycle? Seriously. You're kidding right? How would Neil on a bicycle? Makes no sense.

As for hypocrisy, one can only level that charge if one's own life is without it. Can you please offer proof of your sainthood?

At 12/10/2013 04:19:00 PM, Blogger thrasher said...

@02:09:00 - uh no. But when we get replies like that, what we hear is you saying "No. Let's not honor our treaties."

And for us that is so sad that a NY fan could say let's violate trust. Let's renege on our commitments.

To us, this is unacceptable and we hope and pray that someday you see the light.

Until then, be good to one another.

Dan1,

My profile was created about six months ago when Neil did his filming of the oil sands, for some reason I had to relink my Google+ id. Not sure why.

I don't disagree with creating new alternatives to fossil fuel, that's what got me interested in LinkVolt in the first place, However, I do not believe LinkVolt solves anymore problems then it creates but if one small idea comes out of the project, that is a good thing. Neil is a Mad Scientist and that is what I like about him, but whether you want to believe it or not he is preying on your emotions in order to sell his goods. All artists do it! Did you notice the Ati-Fracking t-shirt he had on at Farm Aid? Natural Gas is 30% cleaner then Oil, would it not make sense to burn more natural gas then oil? Not to Neil.

The problem I have with Neil these days is that he has become very political in his views about pipelines and sources of energy, but based on his past and present day life style I do not believe that he really buys it. He has picked all the low hanging fruit in his career and just like any other aging rock star he has to latch on to what the "Fancy" people are buying these days and that is Climate Change products. Do you think Neil will attend the award ceremony he so deeply despises all these years (the Grammys)? I am willing to bet he will throw 3 tonnes of carbon in the atmosphere to be there.

When a musician gets political in there views, we have to question their motivations, otherwise we just become jock sniffers. I am not a jock sniffer. Climate Change Album, video and book in the works with LinkVolt as the prop??

So Thrasher, are you going to support a "Thrasher Wheat" ban on Neil Young products because of his carbon intensive life style? Keep in mind what Neil says.....

"Whenever you do something good in the war against CO2, people around the world benefit. Everyone benefits."

Jason Smith

No, of course Neil would never say stop living your lifestyle. He's unable to restrain himself from constant long-distance travel. I'm saying stop living your lifestyle, Neil. Such a simple solution. Stop travelling so much. Duh.
His piloting that boat with clean energy doesn't stop all the mining and resource extraction that goes into making the vehicle itself.
I have no doubt that Neil's intentions are good, but he's woefully uninformed. It's all black and white to him. He's got to demonize someone to fight against them.
His touring is about as environmentally destructive as it gets. No getting around it. It is not a sustainable model. Where was his ingenuity on that topic the last 40 years? What are all of these many levels he's so environmentally responsible on? The fact is he's never lived a green lifestyle.

Ok, I'm back on it seems. Hey Doug! Hope u & I get to Massey Hall. Seen u at like 3-4 Neil show's over last few years, Air Can, Buffalo...Anyways, my 2 cents on this absurd discussion of Neil's motives, agenda, is...anyone who has followed this man's music, life, career, all he's done, said, sung, to help, & enrich us all, people, u & me, countless songs, albums, interviews, charity connections, etc...if anyone can seriously, with a straight face, & a clear conscience call Neil Young a hypocrite, for following his heart, is beyond my comprehension. Vitriolic, abusive attacks on a Man who's dedicated his entire professional fife to enriching people, and the planet we all live on is frankly despicable. Look in the mirror all u who attack Neil & describe what u see to us first please. Love!

I'm going to Massey. I was on the ticketmaster site and on the phone to Massey Hall box office. I spoke with someone at Massey Hall at 9:45 and He told Me that people were already lined up at the ticket window. I called again at 10:28 and couldn't get through. At 10:31 there were no side by side seats in any price range on ticketmaster. I kept trying for a single seat and finally got one in RSB Row A seat 101. I kept trying to get another single seat and finally another seat came up in RSB Row C seat 101. It will work out pretty well. My Lady Friend will be 2 rows directly behind Me. The tickets cost Me 273.00 each. Lucky to have gotten in the door. My memory isn't what it used to be but I think this will be the first time I have seen Neil in January. Getting a little weary with all the lake effect snow. 20 inches in the last 48 hours. Hope the weather will be better on Jan 12. Hope every one that wanted tickets got them. Doug S. Warsaw N.Y.
