I love the part where he plays around with the strings of the grand piano (before FOTGIW)

Wait, FOTGIW is the acronym of Flying On The Ground is Wrong? Kinda sounds like a cussword, no wonder no one ever uses that!

Amazing what his voice sounded like back then, so much different.

Absolutely outstanding NYA release. I wasn't sure about this one, but have to say I am blown away by it. Stunning Old Man, must be one of the very best recordings of it.

It's really good, but Massey Hall and BBC 1971 are much better. It's not really an essential release.

awsome stuff, I am confused though, so this stuff won't be included in Archives 2? Just don't want to buy it twice.

@SPOILER - yeah, that was pretty wild. Now if there was only a video of that?!

@Dug - No, we don't see this being on NYA#2. The Archives releases seem designed to be bracketed by specific timeframes. Would've been a nice Bluray download if that had all worked out better. oh well.

Good concert. Maybe just my speakers on my laptop but I am picking up a lot of 'white noise' / static between tracks. Sounds like my old C90 cassettes.
Hopefully the vinyl will cancel this out.
Overall, fantastic. Can not wait for the next phase...Post 1972 archive material. Bring it on.

Can't thank Neil and co enough for all the work to remaster and release these gems ... each one is special and precious ... perhaps there are 1,000 other gems in that vault that we're all dying to hear but just glad to see them tricking out ... i'm aways amazed by how moved I am by Neil's music, old, new ... just totally grateful to have been along for this amazing ride for so long ... hard to believe the Carnegie hall shows are a month away ... good to be a Neil fan!!!

also love the streaming concept ... if that doesn't shut down the complainers nothing will

just thinking the chance to release the Carnegie Hall show of 1970...why this one indeed??...Carnegie Hall 70 probably one of the best performance of Neil along with London 71 and Massey Hall...this one anticipated the Carnegie hall but it was a sort of warm up gig(s)...wondering if anyone recorded the full show on multitrack....for me , another lost chance to listen a great performance....the bootleg and the tape circulating are not good..

I like it, of course, but it's also the first of the Performance Series that I would consider to be truly superfluous. It would have been a great download, a gesture of goodwill to those who spent extra on the Archives; as a stand alone album, it comes across as a bit underwhelming. I agree with Neil's original assessment that there just weren't enough truly great versions to justify it's own full-length release.

Based on Neil's recent performances, though, he seems to be very much into the whole "solo acoustic" thing currently, so I'm guessing this release was only hastily decided upon relatively recently (hence the .5 numbering!).

I'm looking forward to something more essential from the mid-70 s or late-80's before too long (hopefully before I'm into my mid-70's or late-80's!).

The Flying Scotsman.

Why I won't buy this album.
1) It's redundant , rehashed live material from the same period as other live archive releases.
2) It was supposed to be released as a bd live addition to Archives 1.So I already paid for it.
3)The quality of the sound is awful(see why was it going to be a bd live release).
4) It is the proverbial line in the sand. Burned too many times with the Archives.

...and you think I'll invest in PONO.

While I do not share Timothy's anger, I am extremely curious as to why this release isn't being offered in a 24/196 audio format. Yes I see the vinyl option, but going back to Chrome Dreams II in 2007, every release has had a high resolution option. Wtf?

At 12/05/2013 06:37:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Would Archives Guy please explain why this release isn't being offered in 24/196 PCM audio? Every Archives release prior to Cellar Door has...anyone have a theory?

At 12/05/2013 08:42:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

...Probably because the Archives team have only just realised that 24/192, in terms of sound quality benefits, is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. It probably first became apparent during the scientific testing of Pono, I imagine.

Archives Guy has been melted down and turned into renewable energy (I hope).

...If you expect Neil to stick with any one thing for more than a few years, then perhaps you need to go back and study the great man's history! He moves on...

Anyone who says this is a redundant release skipped right over track three! AtGR isn't on any other early acoustic archive or whatever and this version is unbelievable, the best I've heard. Are the critics on this site even listening to NY anymore or just sitting around here spouting off about what he should or shouldn't do? I love this record so far... probably my favourite of the old acoustic live releases.
