Lukas Nelson Discusses the Influence of Neil Young

An interview with Lukas Nelson, son of Willie Nelson, with the group Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real.

In the interview Lukas Nelson discusses the influence of Neil Young. (More on Neil Young's musical influences.)

One would suspect that Lukas Nelson will play Farm Aid 2012.

And maybe someday his dad Willie Nelson will deservedly earn a Nobel Peace Prize for Farm Aid and his work on alternative fuels, and world peace initiatives? Maybe someday smog will turn to stars?

Saw them the first time at Farm Aid last year. Had no idea who he was. They blew out on stage and were Great!! Saw them again at Bridge School. Also, a couple of weeks ago at Knuckleheads in KC. The guys are so talented, something special. But beyound that, they are so willing to engage with the people who come to see them. Just very down to earth, easy-going. I sorta think that he will one day take over Farm Aid when Daddy Willie gets too old. Even in KC, he was talking about supporting farmers and growing sustainable crops like hemp. I think they will make it big some day, so I am greatful that they have many who have been there before them help lead the way.

I never even knew Willie had this boy. A new adventure for us to listen in on. My wife heard the first vocals when it came on and darted across the room. Told me he's handsome too. Gotta be something there. After a look into it, I agree.

Willie told a story about another kid he never knew he had. He showed up at the house one day while Willie was sleeping on the sidewalk. Willie gave him some money and drove him to the road. lol

I remember having a discussion with a friend of mine (BigChief) and we were discussing if anyone will ever come along in the future that could become musically, what Neil is. I remember telling him that I had a feeling about this kid, Lukas Nelson, that there is something about him musically that reminds me of Neil. Not that he is doing "Neil's" music, but that he was following his own path... I don't know how to explain it..

He could have it so easy if he wanted to, having Willie Nelson as your father certainly would open doors. But these guys are out gigging these small clubs, keeping it real.

And then to hear how influenced they are by Neil Young!!! How he inspired their name!!! I had NO idea!!! Anyhow, thanks again Thrasher!! Really, really cool!!

Oh, and if anyone is interested, there is a cool video of Lukas Nelson doing a great cover of "Cortez" with Rick Rosas on bass. I don't have a link (because I am not sure how to do that, lol) Look it up if you care to hear it.

Someone else wrote to us saying they hoped Lukas would carry the Farm Aid flame onward. Let's hope he's up for the job.

of course having to have FA at all is a shame. but that's another story.

But what really struck us was that he named his band after a Neil quote?! Isn't that just priceless?

So, like Lukas, we here @ TW promise to keep it all real. :)

The first thing neil did with his earnings was buy land -- not a mansion or fancy car. He built his own studio which demonstrated how much he wanted to control his craft. Sure m, eventually he branched out into boats and stuff. If I lived on that coast I would invest in a boat maybe even live on one. Neil has kept it real and we love him for that..thanks Sandy for sharing that story. Is it possible I saw Lukas at one of Willie's rodeo gigs on July 4th?.
