Doc. Americana is one of the two new Crazy Horse albums. Crazy Horse + Children's Choir = Americana. Unless you're counting Toast too...

Looking forward to hearing the CH arrangements of these tunes I must say.
you're probably right LRR..but ,when Neil's on a roll you just never know his output
I like the productive muse he's in at the moment!

with much anticipation, doc

I agree, 'The Way' featured a children's choir and I think we can all agree that it is not Neil's best piece of music!

However, 'Living With war' is choral and is rather good.

Respectfully anonymous - no we cannot all agree! 'The Way' is in fact a very deep and stunning piece from Neil that closes the 'Chrome Dreams II' album with a haunting piano melody coupled with epic lyrics about finding eternal piece beyond this Earthly existence. I always find that the childrens choir fits perfectly with the message being conveyed - the way to piece is simplistic and the kids' voices drive that point home to me.

The way that song ends with Neil playing the melody on the piano is so great while the bass thunders in and the bells chime!

Nope - it is a gem on a great album!!

Also, there are two times in the song during each verse where a sound drops in that to me sounds like a ping pong ball being dropped on the table. Listen close...it's in there...

@Jonathan. I can't believe that two people as different as you & I in just about everything imaginable are connecting on "The Way." As they say in the movies, "It's a great day to be human."

BC, it's really ingenius. Think about it. When you were a kid, what do you remember most about music? Didn't musicians leave a lasting impression on you?

I remember my Mom playing Dion, Fleetwoods, Everly's, Lefty Frizzel, Dominos. She even had "Rumble" & "Tequila!" My Dad was strictly CLASSICAL. But I remember my Dad laughing about the Dominos "Sixy Minute Man." I had no idea what he was laughing at, either. A kid's Crazy Horse album is leaving a piece of the rock'n'roll puzzle out on the floor. It totally makes sense.

Do you think they'll end up on Sesame Street? Taj Mahal was on "Arthur" when Buster was learning how to play the guitar. I brought that episode into the guitar shop for the guys to watch.

Oh Susanna and the other traditional songs seen as lyric charts in the 37-minute video - my bet is that's part of Americana.

Control Your Violent Side, I thought that worked out pretty well with a choir. I can imagine the hoots and hollers at the (hopefully) up comming shows .... People yelling out their requests ..."Cortez! Cortez!, Hurricane, Hurricane!,.. Ring Around the Rosie! RING AROUND THE ROSIE!!!!

ps... my word verification has the word "weld" in it ... coincidence??? :)

At 2/03/2012 10:52:00 AM, Blogger Mother Nature on the Run said...

Our whole notion of Americana is so fucked up, really. At least the Canadians got it right during the Olympics that Canadian history doesn't begin with French trappers and British loyalists fleeing from torture, murder, and mayhem by post-Revolution colonists.

Well maybe Crazy Horse for kids will help redefine "Americana" music in general -- the influences, inspirations, and such without forgetting the

For some of you, it's just music, right? So lay off the Crazy Horse band, right? Sorry, I just don't think the same way everyone else does. When I see the name Crazy Horse name, first and foremost I think of one of the greatest American heroes that ever lived.

At 2/03/2012 11:52:00 AM, Anonymous The Zuma Band said...

Crazy Horse doing Americana with a children's choir? It sounds so wrong, but also so Neil. I respect Crazy Horse's judgment in the matter, though.

I will be disappointed if the "two albums" are just "Americana" and "Horse Back." "Horse Back" better just be a teaser.

At 2/03/2012 12:19:00 PM, Blogger Mother Nature on the Run said...

Sting did Peter and the Wolf. Don't you have that in your collection, Zuma? Ringo hosted Thomas the Train, too. Everyone was coming out of the woodwork doing kid's stuff. Back in the 90s there was a kid's radio show on NPR from Minnesota called Radio AAHS (collaborating with the Walker Art Center) and lots of rock musician played and even hosted.

Can I be honest with you guys? I love NY and Crazy Horse. Love their energy, big sound, and rollicking jams. Loved Ragged Glory; loved Broken Arrow. But, so far what I'm hearing is (a) Americana songs, (b) children's choir, and (c) a 37-session that is part old songs and part a plod-fest. None of this really gets my juices flowing. How about some actual, new, rock-and-roll songs written and recorded by NY and CH? Let's be honest -- that is why we love these guys. That is why these guys are great. Why are they running away from this and towards choirs and old, re-hashed folks songs? Disappointing. And dare I say a little lazy.

Sorry to always be the contrarian, but this is how I feel and I doubt that I'm alone on this.

Hope on the Horizon: There are more Crazy Horse sessions planned for this weekend! So that clearly implies that there is more coming than just Americana and HorseBack. Maybe it will be rocking. Maybe it won't. Some of these guys are in their late 60s. Temper the expectations.

Regarding Horseback. I recorded it to a CD. Unfortunately there were a couple of glitches in the stream when I was recording. It's interesting but I'm not in love with it. I like the Fuckin Up portion. But I cringe when listening to Billy, Ralph and Poncho needing 40 seconds to finally sync up the beat on Cortez. Also, it's funny that Poncho was trying to start up Cortez at the beginning when the rest of the band started into the Fuckin Up Jam.

As far as Americana goes....I take solace in the fact that I'll have something cool I can share with my 3 year old daughter when it comes out.

Seriously, would you rather have to listen to "Music Together" sung by Uncle Jerry or "Americana" played by the Horse? Which do YOU think is better for your child :-) ????

"Crazy Horse has rearranged them (the folk songs) and they now belong to us.."

Well, I'm reassured by that almost subversive statement from NY in the clip. I expected him to add a sinister "heh-heh" after he said it.

At 2/03/2012 02:36:00 PM, Blogger Mother Nature on the Run said...

Oh Big Rig, don't be disappointed. It's not exactly what I had in mind, either, but we're only hearing stuff in fast soundbites. Neil's mind changes as fast as the weather these days.

LRR -- Seriously? My kids understand that Americana music doesn't begin with a banjo on my knee or the first train whistle heard down the mountain pass. It started long before European encroachment and settlement. It starts with vocalizations of many sounds & syllables, flutes, drums, and rattle tremolos.

What I find SO darn amusing is that after years of "hearing" (reading about) people crying, begging, pleading, cajoling, praying, etc. for NY & Crazy Horse to re-unite, now that they're finally back together, people (probably the same ones) are already criticizing.

Talk about can't please all the people all of the time!!!

All I can say is that my heart is warmed by the mere thought of the Horse all back together and making music for me to enjoy. I love listening to Horse Back!!!!!

Keep on rocking!

I share Big Old Rig's unease with the direction that NY & Crazy Horse seem to be going in. Of course Neil can do what he wants (and should!), but whatever happened to the days when Crazy Horse played short, punchy, melodic songs? Songs like Cinnamon Girl, Don't Cry No Tears, Barstool Blues, even Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black). Long, drawn-out jams are great and all, but I hope Crazy Horse haven't given up on playing actual songs with catchy melodies.

Why are people commenting on music they haven't heard yet? How about letting it come out first, and see what they came up with. Crazy Horse is made up of people, and people evolve, they become interested in different things. Maybe the Horse have a bigger perspective on the world, on life. Maybe they want to try some things they toyed with in the past but never got around to doing. Maybe a lot of things, who knows? Maybe we get some new concepts, mixed in with the tried and true. Who knows? Who cares? The Horse is back together, all bets are off.

Can't wait.

it matters not,

Is there any hint from this jam session
that 'Horse back' means just that
I get that impression!

in any event ,
Will there be a tour!
Crazy horse and choir!
or something obscure

Time will tell,
we are all excited

@MNOTR. No idea what point you're trying to make...but I'm glad your kids are sophisticated in the roots of Americana music.

Sorry for the confusion, LRR. My kids are hardly sophisticated. For any 3 year old, their world is purely magical. They grow up too fast. Glad to know a Daddy like you is it 100%.

And thanks Marian for your pinpoint observation! Sure is funny how much folks can get to worryin' about something that hasn't even happened yet but hopefully will and will be the best thing yet when and if it does happen.
