A 15 year Old Covers ‘Heart of Gold’: Watch Tavi Gevinson
OK, normally we don't run Neil Young covers by 15 year olds.
But we did find this cover by Tavi Gevinson of Neil Young’s ‘Heart of Gold’ to be well... quite tender, touching and endearing.
At age 15, Tavi Gevinson blogs on the fashion industry for her blog Style Rookie and her online magazine Rookie.
Gevinson performed “Heart of Gold” after a midnight screening of her new short film, Cadaver. The song -- also featured in the film -- was performed at The Standard in East Village, New York.
Apparently, Neil personally approved the authorized use of the song in the film -- a rare event as we saw last year.

Neil would probably stop playing with all those camera flashes, probably much of those cameramen even haven't heard the great lyrics at all...
But i like the cover, it sounds very 'lonely', and that may be what this song is about.
so haunting I got teary-eyed getting ready for work this morning. It struck a chord deep inside me.

I hate to discourage anybody who is bringing Neil's music (albeit 'Heart of Gold') to a wider audience, but it is dreadful.
Sorry.
Sorry darlobuc, but we think you completely missed the whole essence of the cover then.
Who she is. what she's doing. Where's she's been. Where she's going.
It ain't American Idol...
Phenomenal. To cover a Neil Young song, his most well known at that, and bring a new sensibility and tenderness to it is really brilliant.
No wonder Neil approved its use.
NI agree with Thrasher . Neil himself was told "not to sing". The cover capture the essense of the song . Suggest watching Neil perform it on the BBC show in 1971. She did very good.
I liked it. Not to hijack this thread, But..... this is also one of my favorite Heart of Gold covers. It always puts a smile on my face ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IezmyxPWJek&list=FLP_pX5ZGycoEaRVXR6y_o5g&index=66&feature=plpp_video )
Also one of my favorite video (cover?) of When You Dance ... ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHo07H7biuk&list=FLP_pX5ZGycoEaRVXR6y_o5g&index=50&feature=plpp_video )
Wow...very interesting whoever is playing it with a capo up on the 4th or 5th fret...a 15 year old singing those lyrics is indeed quite striking...who isn't getting old?
"Who she is. what she's doing. Where she's been. Where she's going."
Can someone elaborate on that? From everything I can tell, she's nothing more than a fashion blogger. I don't say that to be mean, but she's just a kid who was told (paid) to cover a song. I'm not even sure she knows what she's singing. I lean more towards darlobuc. But if there's more to her backstory that I don't know about, please share. Also, yeah... Those cameras probably didn't help her case.

We don't know much more than the links either.
Here's another consideration.
It is just incredibly rare for Neil to approve these things and he doesn't do it lightly.
We just imagine that he looked into her career and liked what he saw.
He sees something that maybe you don't?

Thrasher, sometimes you kind of overestimate Neil, and this is coming from a fan OBSESSED with Neil Young. Just because he lets a cute 15 years old girl play his song does not mean he knows the truth about her Godlike talents!
Let's just say he has a goodheart and liked what she offered... I doubt there's "more to the picture than meets the eyes"
You might want to check out Rookie, the web presence of Tavi Gevinson

I first became aware of it because I follow young Spencer Tweedy (yes, Jeff's son and social media wunderkind) on Twitter. It seems his Mom has saved EVERYTHING from her youth and it became an essay on Rookie. Spencer is also a contributor:
"Spencer Tweedy is a teenage musician and Tavi Gevinson’s personal Nesquik dealer. He dabbles in public angst on his weblog".
I'm a fan, and apparently so his Neil. Don't be denied.
And check out the movie trailer. The film stars Christopher Lloyd and Kathy Bates. And Tavi Gevinson as lynn, the med student.
