Neil Young and Crazy Horse: "When I Hold You in My Arms" - Farm Aid 2001
Neil Young and Crazy Horse performing "When I Hold You in My Arms", live at Farm Aid in 2001.
The Concert for America in Noblesville, Indiana was held just 18 days after the September 11 attacks on September 29, 2001.
The Concert for America honored family farmers as a resource for the nation.
This version of "When I Hold You in My Arms" is quite unique with Neil playing both the piano and Old Black guitar.
And -- needless to say -- this rendition given the context is unbelievably poignant and heartfelt.

Wow, the first thing I thought watching this was "Neil at his best", and then I realized this is the first time I've ever seen Neil doing a piano/guitar combo. Wow again. I remember being in Indianapolis the week of this concert and talking to a client who was going, and wishing I could go too. Oh, well. Thanks for showing me a little of what I missed, Thrash.
I saw the Crazy Horse tour in Denmark that July, they played "When I Hold You in my Arms" like that and two other new songs, one of which also ended up on "Are you Passionate?". While I like the Passionate versions I've always loved hearing live recordings of these songs from the tour that preceded it (that tour). I'm intrigued to hear "Toast" because I feel as though I can understand why Neil wouldn't release it if while in the studio him and the Horse could never re-create what you hear in that video.
great post. I just went thru my FA 2001 tape this past weekend with this on it. I thought this one stole the show.
Depending on the mood Neil is in and what live function he is at whether it be farm aid, bridge school or just a full on touring concert you can never be sure what renditions he'll play...just a few subtleties, can
be instrument or composition can give a whole different feel to a song...geee, how many versions of certain songs with a different flavour thrown in can give you a whole new appreciation of that song
I definitely love some songs live as against the album and studio version..."dreamin' man' vs harvest moon a case in point.

Nice. I was there and this song kinda felt weird because it came after a blistering "Love And Only Love" right before it. That version of LAOL was just incredible and is a top moment of any for the times I've seen him live.
But this song was pretty cool and interesting to see Neil shift back & forth from piano to guitar.

Does the music and the message get any better than this? I saw Neil for the first time in the mid-70's and well over 100 times later I still get as excited as ever when a tour might happen. Of all the different shows I've seen,Neil with Crazy Horse is my favorite.
