ROUNDUP: Paul McCartney Honored at Musicares by Neil Young & Crazy Horse, others

This weekend, Paul McCartney was honored as the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year by an array of musical stars in Los Angeles.

Among the many musicians paying tribute to the former Beatle, Neil Young & Crazy Horse reunited for their first gig together since the 2003/4 Greendale tour.

By all indications, the reunion of Crazy Horse was the musical highlight of the evening in which there were many.

From Paul McCartney Honored as MusiCares Person of the Year - New York Times.com By JAMES MCKINLEY, JR.:
But the performance that brought the crowd to its feet and seemed to capture the rock and roll spirit of the early Beatles came from Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Mr. Young, his long grey hair spilling out from under his white hat, launched into “I Saw Her Standing There” in a loose, free style, letting the guitars ring as he sang the teenage anthem with a snarl and launched into a post-modern guitar solo in which the melody jumped, stuttered and seemed to cry out in pain. Simply put, the song rocked, sounding as if it could have been recorded yesterday.

“Paul!” Mr. Young said after he finished, raising his hand in a salute, while the crowd applauded wildly.

I love Elvis's body language. Think he's comfortable with Neil? He's in a full boxer stance, knees flexed, fists closed. Ready for anything Neil may throw his way.

Pretty amazing, like John Carpenter and Nicolette Larson met up in some dark alley.

Man, that short snippet of Neil and the Horse is such a tease. Would love to see a video. Does anyone know how long their song went on for? Haven't seen that mentioned anywhere.

I would loved to have seen Buffalo Springfield like everyone else but does anyone here think BS would have lit up that room like Crazy Horse did?! So now we wait for the other shoe to drop. Hopefully it'll drop right here on my head!

Thanks Thrasher. Can't wait to see what happens next!!

Seeing Neil Young with Crazy Horse minus the WAGs and sidemen really makes me feel like I am getting MY Neil Young back.....don't know how else to say it....I hope he rides this wave well for a while...

Elvis Costello looks like an older version of Scott Weiland - Haven't watched Norah's performance, i'm sure she gave a cool rendition of "Oh Darling" but i'd love to see Sarah Bareilles' version on that bill- That coat is awful Mr. Wilson!!

Funny, I thought Elvis is looking more and more like Leonard Cohen!

^Was just about to make a comment on his (almost spooky) Leonard Cohen similarities.

Poncho looks like a trim early 90's Jerry Garcia. Band looks great....maybe it is cause its what I wanna see but Neil looks as healthy and as vital on the stage with the Horse as he has in years.

As an Anon said, "what a tease"! It seems to me that the day after last years event, we had all of the videos of the performances. Could be mistaking, though ... I'm just craving my Crazy Horse fix ... most of what I've seen was pretty lame in comparison. Once again, it was 'Neil Young and everyone else'... He, along with the Horse, of course, stole the show!

My favorite is the picture of Neil with Brian Wilson...and I'm happy to see them both looking so happy and healthy! How about a world tour of Neil and the Horse with Brian and The Beach Boys...yeah they've got you now with those waves....

Hello everyone - I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already so forgive me please if this is redundant. Over the weekend, I was thumbing through 'Shakey' looking for something different than what I ended up stumbling upon.

Early in the book, Neil is being interviewed about his early days in Toronto with the Squires, etc. when he mentions how much he loved these minor key arrangements of folk songs such as 'Oh Susannah', 'Clementine', etc. He gushes over a band called The Thorns and how the arrangements by a guy named Tim Rose blew him away and how Stills was doing these versions early on.

Like I said, perhaps someone mentioned this in the aftermath of the 'Horse Back' video, but I didn't see it if it was.

Anyway, it looks like Neil has returned to those arrangements if the Bridge performance of 'Oh Susannah' is any indication.

Patiently waiting for more news...

Good call on that Jonathan.

from "Shakey", p 112-3

""They (The Thorns) did "Oh Susannah...and it was rock and roll....I did minor(key) versions of them all...Wish there were tapes of those shows..We used to do all this stuff, a whole kinda music- folk rock.
We took famous old songs like "Clementine," "She'll Be Comin' 'Round The Mountain," Tom Dooley," and we did them all in minor keys based on the Tim Rose arrangment of "Oh Sussanah."

So, electrify the guitars and add drums to those acoustic versions from Bridge, probably speed up a bit and there you go. I think it should sound awesome.

Anybody know what key he played "I Saw Her Standing There" in? I think the original is in E but that seems too high for Neil these days.
