The live performances had that big bass thundering throb he got from working a Moog Taurus pedal, and that, unfortunately, sounds to be missing.

But the song is great, nonetheless.

Wow, really weird. Anyone else notice that the ... sound is... bouncing from left to right, really fast, or something?

I noticed this same thing in one of the other songs. The stereo mix is confusing to me. The song is almost overwhelmed by echo at points.

I wonder what this would sound like in a mono mix?

There's so much going on here, once again it threatens to capsize the song, and Neil's voice just barely glues the thing together.

It's a really cool mix, just very hard for me to wrap my head around.

And of course, a great song.

I was intrigued as to how this masterful song would turn out with Lanois. I love the sparse 92 solo versions and was blow away by the powerful live version this year when Neil REALLY kicked life into the song.

After a couple of listens here, sadly not yet through a good hifi, i just love the massive soundscape created. The Lanois swirl raises this gem a few more levels.

And lets not overlook the lyrics - for me Neils best are the lengthy observational songs

Hitchhiker is for sure in the top family related to Ordinary People and Crime in the City. Spectacular !

What a fabulous music video! Mesmerizing, Heavy, Back to where I want to be..in a dreamland. The delayed sounds really give this a "State of Halicinagenics". Loved it!!

I absolutely loved it! I love the mix- all the sounds- it’s like waking up in a psychedelic battlefield; without all the death and with good melodies. Everything I've heard so far has completely blown me away. Like Neil Young in Ménage à trois with Sonic Youth and Jimi Hendrix- especially on Walk With Me. As much as I love the electric version of Hitchhiker I feel it was done better acoustic. Something about the solo acoustic renditions in 92' are just so hunting- but hey, it’s just a different version of the same spectacular song- either way I love it. The Hitchhiker is up there with Don’t Be Denied- hell of a song- I think Dylan said The Hitchhiker is as honest of a song as you get? Lanois, I think is a welcome fellow traveler for Neil- both Canadian, both mystical enough, both try to see under the surface and look for the undiscovered.
Rolling Stone says Le Noise is the sound of a man who refuses to give up and that’s pretty apt but for me it’s like Neil is still just starting out- I understand how that sounds but there is something to be said about an artist who refuses to believe he is past his prime, or that he knows all there is to know. Neil as retained an innocence that allows him to see into and navigate though a misty musical labyrinth where others (especially at his age) either won’t enter or just get too confused and turn back to more comfortable and recognizable quarters. Neil is innocent enough and has balls enough to tromp on in without a second guess. The result of which is always brilliant- misunderstood sometimes but this is Neil's art- not our own. The blatant and the obvious does not always belong in art. Real art makes you FEEL and makes you THINK. Neil Young understands that in his line of work, to think you know everything is a death sentence- he needs to keep an open mind, and believe there is still much to learn and many ways to continue growing as an artist. Once you stop growing you start dying. Like the Young/Briggs credo; “The more you think, the more you stink” don’t let the conscious mind get in the way of the subconscious because that is where the art comes from, where the muse is. That’s why when Neil puts out a new album its exciting as hell- you want to hear (and see) what Neil has been up to. You know it will be different but you know him enough to trust that he’ll “never let you down”; you know it will be great, each in its own way because Neil is great. We know his beliefs and practices and they work, no matter who produces or who he plays with, its Neil’s ballgame- but the music- the muse makes the rules. This is way I say it’s like Neil is just starting out- it will always seem that way if Neil is keeps on his journey and retains his invaluable beliefs on art, music, writing ,life and creation.

hmmm, interesting comments..so the Neil purists, could be forgiven for being a bit confused here maybe?

Yeah, this IS a different sound....with a len wah touch...

Hey, the jury could be out for some...but I think...with a few heavy rotations, this earworm of 'le noise' will definitely be well implanted!

just my opinion

shittyhorse, one of these days i might make it through one of your posts. maybe the next time i'm having trouble getting to sleep i'll give it a shot.

as for me, i'm pretty underwhelmed with this le noise stuff. i like the songs but is this supposed to be groundbreaking? a bunch of effects on neil's solo performance? hell, i could do that right here at home with protools (of course it wouldn't SOUND as good but you get the idea).

bottom line...we're being sold a false bill of goods here, folks. this ain't nothing new. i just don't think neil and lanois are a good fit. remember the old mantra..."the more you think the more you stink".

Hey Kev, underwhelmed, not impressed. That's cool. There are bound to be a variety of opinions, as usual. But, you know, that doesn't make you right (we are being sold a false bill of goods) and those that love it wrong. It just didn't hit you the same way.

Peace, SAndy

yeah, it's my opinion. just like "holy goosebumps" or whatever was yours. all i'm saying is playing with effects is nothing new. "le noise" has already been made a thousand times by stoner guitarists in their smoke filled bedrooms.

well. as I have said a few times before on previous posts when it comes to something new and "controversial"...diversity of opinion is always healthy and its good to see those through someone elses eyes, some one elses tastes and reflections. Alls I know is we can now express those in an environment where we are all here with the same agenda..we are Neil fan's. Embrace each other's opinions..challenge their point of view..debate their stance if you wish..but lets be a family again and respect everyone's view points without malice or snarkiness.

EVERYONE has credibility here and if their is ANY trolls that want to visit this forum just to be fkwits let them visit..they'll be sorted out quick smart.

so come people now smile on ya brother

everybody blog together and luv one another...right now!

Neil's a national treasure ... We've seen it for 40 years but I'm constantly amazed by his ability to keep producing new songs, new sounds, always changing, always moving forward ... I love this video, Neil is beyond cool, he's so relevant, so real. He puts so much of himself into the whole thing. It will be interesting where he takes things from here ... solo electric, solo acoustic, the Horse, a new band ... his dedication to the muse, to producing music is totally beyond... what a trip to be a Neil fan, its a gift that keeps on giving ... Thanks again Thrasher for providing us a place to congregate and enjoy the Neil scene.

I haven't heard the album yet, just a few songs that provide an idea about the sound that Lanois brings to the project. I think it's fair to say that the basic concept of feeding the sound through technology that makes it come out the other end with a different sound is not ground breaking- and trust me, I am an ignoramus when it comes to technical studio stuff, and frankly, all I know about Daniel Lanois is what I've read here the last few weeks, and that in general he has a very good reputation as a performer/producer. But I think this angle misses the point. No one has ever suggested that Neil is particularly ground breaking, in terms of the musical forms he adopts, although just off the top of my head, I do think he has been instrumental in the development of country rock. I mean, I'm sure Neil would be the first to admit that he did not invent the Stax sound, folk, R&B, computer tech, etc., etc. You know? Rather, I think Neil would probably say that at various times he has been overtaken by different musical forms, inspired by them, and prodded on (by muse, or whatever) to express himself a certain way. I think he would also say that by wearing new hats, and experimenting around with things, he has kept himself renewed, refreshed, and spoiling for what comes next. Can't predict what it will ever be, but like as not it will be compelling, because the fire has been stoked again to the point where something new can come from it. I think he will always return to his base mode- the albums I love that mix in r&b/country rock with acoustic, but I also think that he is at another career crossroads, this one once again dictated by things beyond his control.

One of his main musical foundations, and personal touchstone, Ben Keith, is gone- though unless I am mistaken, I think this project predated Ben's death. I just read a quote where Neil said that about 80% of his onstage song list has just been wiped out. Think about that for a moment. His hand has been forced, and I think this explains a lot about the direction this Lanois project took. Maybe Neil felt like he just didn't have a choice other than to put his songs into someone else's fresh approach. Or maybe this was just an opportune time to take advantage of a long held desire to work with Lanois. Here we are again speculating about why Neil ever does anything. And here I am again saying, I don't know and I don't care.

I think you have it right again Shitty, this is less about sound and musical form, than it is about art, muse, and the youthful innocence to be open to experimentation. In short, it's about Neil being Neil. Can't wait to hear the album as a cohesive piece and vibe, but in the end, Neil being Neil is all I personally care about. That the music is always pleasing to me, as this album promises to be, is just icing on the cake.

Yeah. It really tied the room together.

On Le Noise: its nice to hear something new and different. I like the whole concept and approach. But the song writing - to me - seems around mediocre. Better than fork in the road, but it doesn't make me want to listen to it again. The spark is missing for me.
