Sponsored by Somebody: Thrasher's Wheat Goes Corporate Whore
washing your windows and shining your stars
OMG, TW goes corporate whore by taking ads?!?!
OK, so that was pretty dramatic.
As you can see above, Thrasher's Wheat's Neil Young News page has begun to run an advertisement. No longer sponsored by nobody, this blog is hopefully still for you.
And let's be clear here. To say we've agonized over this for literally years would be an understatement. First, we tried those Amazon links. That worked a little bit. Then we tried reader supported donations. That worked a little bit more.
But still traffic continues to surge, costs continue to rise for data storage and bandwidth fees. Here's a graphic of traffic trends just since the start of the year.
Since just January 2009, we've had the Canada-US Tour, Linc-Volt, and Fork in the Road. Now with what looks to be the imminent release of The Holy Grail Archives boxset and another European tour, we're bracing for another traffic surge.
We realize that a lot of readers know that this is pretty much a side hobby that we continue to gladly subsidize out of our own pockets.
However, as the global economy continues to nosedive, Amazon purchases and donations have dwindled from a pretty tepid level to virtually non-existent outside of a handful of loyal supporters. It appears that even Neil Young fans aren't purchasing Neil CD's, books, etc. judging by what we see in our Amazon Neil Young Store.
Even our contest to win an Uncut Magazine preview issue of Neil Young's Archives barely covered the costs of the issue and postage?!
Our hopes of having sufficient funds to do a server upgrade and replace our publishing software seem to be a lost cause.
Look at our server load (red is very bad).
Oh, what to do?
We have no book to sell. We have no merchandise to hawk.
Some have suggested using our TW logo on t-shirts and coffee cups. We shudder at the thought. But if someone wants to make a business case for us it might be something to consider.
Of course, we prefer to stay solely reader supported, for a number of reasons.
Awhile back, we posed the question to you -- the reader, the Neil fan -- what if we ran ads on Thrasher's Wheat. Somewhat surprisingly, it seemed to be OK with folks. Afterall, rust@yahoo is plastered with ads.
We've been in discussions with the site mog.com for sometime about running ads. MOG is a music blog, plain & simple. The editor Michael Goldberg and Thrasher go way back to the days of the defunct Addicted to Noise which made pioneering attempts to be an internet music magazine back in the web infancy of the mid-90's. So Michael's a internet music pioneer and if anyone is going to crack this, we may as well go along for the ride.
Afterall, newsprint in newspaper and magazines are dying fast. Virtually by the day. Will those ad dollars shift to the 'net? Who knows?
So if we were ever going to do this, MOG seemed like a good partner to go with. Not to get into all the messy details of web advertising, but essentially what we've done is joined an ad network. So the good news is that we don't have to mess with the advertisers and rates directly. The bad news is that we have no control over what will appear up there. Although we've been promised it won't be those ridiculous flash ads.
So you help TW by clicking thru the ads and we get a teeny tiny fraction of a penny every time you click.
As we mentioned, this was a difficult decision. One upside is that maybe we won't have to run our little fundraisers from time to time which come across as begging to us and we find quite distasteful.
Almost lastly, we'll say thank you so much to those who have so generously supported us with donations and Amazon purchases. You've helped us to take TW to this level. We hope this change in course doesn't make you feel that we've caved on our principles and understand we're dealing with -- while not exactly survival issues -- managing to stay afloat.
But most importantly, all the contributors of links, reviews, photos, videos, and stories. These are the heart and soul of TW.
We'll promise you that the editorial content of this blog is not going to be influenced by the ads, needless to say.
Incidentally, (if you're still reading and give a shit), there was a lot of debate about an ad in the sidebar vs the header. Our preference was in the side but couldn't make work right with sizing, etc. We really didn't like the header but it was the only way to go.
In the meantime, click thru to MOG on the ad above. That way they'll know we're linked into their network.
In cyberspace, every click is a vote. Your economic power and what you do with it is your most powerful weapon in taking on the system.
While not exactly clicking for Neil, it might be as close as we get.
This is cliche as hell, but keep on clickin' in the free world! (Sorry Neil)
ps - We figure that if hell is scheduled to freeze over on June 2, what the heck.
pss - We still encourage folks to make a contribution or an Amazon purchase as it is highly uncertain as to how this will work out and it will take quite a bit of time before we see any funds whatsoever.

I fully support this move. No advert is gonna keep me away from reading the outstanding material you produce on, what is pretty much, a daily basis. Don't feel guilty at all; if I was in your position I would have given in to advertising a long time ago. I admire the length of time you've resisted it and your critical stance upon it.
"One upside is that maybe we won't have to run our little fundraisers from time to time which come across as begging to us and we find quite distasteful."
^ I never found any of those posts "begging" or "distasteful." If anything, they're understandable. Keep up the good work and best of luck with covering the costs. I stand by this move and I'm pretty sure that Neil would support you too.
Hi TW
As I am relatively new to your site, and enjoy reading all the comments nearly every day I wish to give you my full support for this move.
We all know that everyone in the world at the moment, is feeling the pinch about money and also we all know that even the tiniest bit of help goes a long way.
Hope this goes a bit more of the way to covering costs..however being in finance my self I also realise that costs keep going up all the time and eventually even this little bit of help will result, I bet, in another shortfall in the future.
Dare I say it...that in the future, arrghh you may have to cover costs with a small membership fee.. I know, I know... no one likes going down that track however I'm sure those of us loyal to TW would not mind a small fee to help you cover costs and It's not like other sites do not ask for this.
In the world we live in Nothing is really free..and we also know that advertising is also a necessary evil. Neil also sang "You pay for this, but they give you that"... so as long as you NEVER go to flashing adds I for one will be happy to continue logging & blogging on your site.
Many thanks for informing us of your dilemma, it is very much appreciated and creates a greater awareness and understanding of whats involved in running this great website.

I have checked your site every day for years. Glad you're getting something in return.
It's a great move in my opinion. The time and effort put into this blog really shows. It's the only blog I check daily. Congrats Thrasher's Wheat, I'll be clicking for the cause.
Thrash, even though you hate me ,I do luv you......You prostitute yourself anyway you have to! ...you deserve it.
Yours forever DIP
Can I just suggest maybe looking into a new host for the website if increased traffic is costing you more money? Places like dreamhost have pretty much unlimited transfer for like $6/month or something.
Understandable move, and it's not too disturbing. What is disturbing is sites ith popup windows. Keep up the good work!
Hey, aren't we all looking for that whore with a heart of gold? You're it today, Thrasher, and the rest of us will get our chances in days to come, in one way or another. Keep sending us great stuff, that's all that matters! (P.S. I don't even look at those advertising banners, so they're not making any money off of me or wasting my time or eyesight.) Don't beat yourself up, Thrasher!
Times are tough and you have to do what you have to do.
As poster Mike wrote above, you might want to shop web hosting sites with the caveat that, very likely, there will be advertising on the more affordable sites.
Peace,
Chicago
Hey Trash,
Love the site and taking on corp advertisers is no big deal. Rather see that than the site shut down for lack of funding, keep on rockin' bro'.

I'd place you in the NFP-not for profit group. All us Neilheads can't expect the free lunch program (T.Wheat) to subsidize us with free Neil info and updates and all the other goodies that you bring. Do what you must. No apology necessary. You ain't no whore.
god knows everybody 's got to have someone in the world somewhere
Hey, it's Neil who "ain't singing for Coke"; Thrasher can do as he pleases... But please, no Stub Hub ads, okay? Keep up the great work -- and, by the way, this note's for you.

luv ya Dr. Dip
No need to apologize - you did what you had to do. You have my full support.

Thrasher,
IMHO your site is the best, bar none. Its a site befitting of Neil and the fact we had visits from AG is but one indication of this. Clearly its a labor of love, since it costs you time and money and sometimes grief from the trolls ... The ads make a lot of sense ... I agree with a former poster who said that your appeals are also very reasonable ... with many of us (happily) coughing up the bucks for the Archives and the tough economy if ads will do the trick and help you keep up this site, more power to you. Thanks again for all your hard work to make this such a fabulous place to come and hang out.
Dan
What! No bailout for Thrasher. Oh,the humanity. Where the heck was Obama when Thrasher needed him most? Oh, that's right, bailing out bigwigs. Times are tough when Democrats support bigwigs just like their Republican Brothers in Congress. Just as well, because if Thrasher got government support, and if we all get government support, there will be no more Rockin' in the Free World. There will be no more free world.
Thrasher & Thrashette,
Keep up the great work! As long as your content doesn't change on your great site, there is not problem. Hope to have this site around for many a long year.

In today's economy no one should expect anyone (or virtually anyone) to work for free. The independently wealthy could, but the thousand points of light really never took off for this crowd. Good move. This is a good blog. Keep up the good work!
Hey Thrasher
No problems here. This is America. You actually have the right to (GASP!) make money. A couple thoughts/questions:
-You might want to make an effort to "treasure the trolls." Nothing pumps up the traffic like a bunch of idiots spouting garbage.
-can you let us know, exactly, how the revenue flows to you. Do you get paid when one visits the site and the ad(s) display or not until someone actually clicks on the ad? If the latter, does the software filter IP addresses so you only get credit the first time someone clicks on an ad, or can we sign on a hundred times a day and click and get you credit for it?
Let us know and we'll start madly clicking away.
P/F
The goal is not to drive up traffic via idiot trolls. It really detracts from the "abiance" shall we say.
2) This all new to us. But definitely don't click away on ads as that is seen as click fraud. But I don't think a couple of times a day on different versions is a problem.
As I learn more I'll share.
thnx,
t
OK. I'll try to ration the clicks, but I'm a little slow so I might have to see the ad a few times before it registers. (I know that Subway, for instance, feels that it takes at least nine impressions before an ad even registers.) So if they give you any crap, send them to Subway.
Re; The trolls and ambiance - It wouldn't be any fun if it was all sweetness and light and there weren't any trolls to chase - all in good fun, of course - don't have to hate them worse than lepers and kill them in their cars.
P/F
I'm interested in that remark re trolls.
I agree that disagreement is interesting.
But my feeling is that some stuff is just pure snarky trouble making for the thrill of it. My sense is that's a turn off.
Please make a compelling argument as to why folks posting that Neil's ripping folks off, deceptive, he sucks, is in any enlightening or welcome
t
Sorry Thrash, I soughta got to agree with Pinto here about the trolls.....thats what makes the site interesting
Where was the tennis world before "Mac the brat" came along and dared to question the hierachy.. a bit of a rebel... but made the game interesting!
If every blogger that came along to TW in some Utopian world of harmonic positive remarks, who dared not to question a thread in the negative, it would get pretty boring wouldn't it?
Hey, I'm all for positive feel good Neil comments but a few troll comments thrown , makes for good debate..and forgive me if I'm wrong, but don't you get a buzz outa proving them wrong from time to time
Let the 'Johnny rockets of this world comment, everyone's got there problems!Hey, there's a prescription for everything in life
even if Johnny's cough is chronic

Thrasher
I've sensed your ?discomfort? (mild word for hate) for those whose intent seems to be to, exclusively, tear down the object of your entirely justified attention. I can't blame you or even disagree.. I'd just say that the nature of Internet discourse seems to compel extreme expression.
We might be sitting around having a few beers and I might say "Man, Fork in the Road really sucks.: and you might say "Dude, you're a pin-headed mutant" and it would be followed by another round of beers and a discussion of American Stars and Bars and if it would be considered a classic if it weren't for "Bite the Bullet" and we'd follow our designated drivers to the car and resume the whole thing next Saturday night, but the Internet does not lend itself to nuance and even mild negativity can come across as hatespeak.
You have a wide and loyal following here. I sense that it causes you real emotional pain when, in your opinion, Neil is judged unfairly. I think you can relax a little and trust that the man's genius will always win out and, in doing so, enjoy the expansion of audience you gain from the negitators.
Hi P/F,
Thanks for your well reasoned comment, as always.
I hear what you're saying.
I've had folks say that they like to tune into Rust or TW or wherever b/c it's like a little sanctuary from the crazy world where they find folks who have a similar world view and they can chill and soak up a vibe.
An escape from that nasty, cruel world if you will.
So when they come to TW and they see a bunch of negative chatter it's a turnoff and they bolt.
While we're not opposed to negative opinions and disagreements whatsoever.
But some naysayers seem bent on nothing more than stirring up trouble after repeated polite requests to drop something that's been hammered ad infinitum.
And then there's just stuff which blatantly wrong and negative who's intent seems to be nothing more than trying to shred Neil's integrity.
That's where we have to draw the line. I don't need to recite things like the Bridge School or Farm Aid or any of the other benefits he's done. Obviously, there's a huge listing of Neil's "humanity".
So when some BS accusation comes along from someone with "fan bona fides" we call BS.
