Speakin' Out is a new Neil Young fanzine and issue #3 has just been published.

Speakin' Out -- a UK based fanzine dedicated to the music of Neil Young -- features concert reviews, photos and all sorts of interesting items.

In an interview with Micah Nelson -- "Particle Kid: Take The Best You Can Today!" -- he discusses the TRANS animated film (Thanks Ian, NYUA, & HtH!):

Micah Nelson: I have been working off on for over a year now on the TRANS project with Neil.

There will be an animated video for each song. It's like a dystopian sci-fi rock opera art film. Very strange and very cool.

A totally DIY project, using a ton of different mediums all stitched together like an animated collage. It is raw as hell. Neil is re-releasing the TRANS EP the way it was originally meant to be heard, and seen as an animated film.

It's a dream project."

Certainly a welcome addition to the Rust community after the demise of NYAS's long standing, legendary and thoroughly indispensable Broken Arrow Magazine.

We obtained our 1st copy of Speakin' Out while attending Neil Young's solo concerts in Chicago in 2018. So a big thanks for our nice gift Reluctant Mosher!

The entire library of Trouser Press magazine is now online, including the Neil Young from April 1980, issue #49.

The cover article "Neil Young's Diamonds and Rust: A Man For All Seasons" by Jon Young, is largely a re-hash of what was known about Neil Young at the time of what was to become essentially his career peak in the late 1970's.

It begins somewhat ominously -- yet amusingly in retrospect -- as follows:

Ask ten people to describe Neil Young and you'll probably get ten different responses.

To some, he's one of the dregs of the '60s, a purveyor of stale hippie sentiments and, at worst, interchangeable with Stephen Stills, David Crosby and Graham Nash. Others, who have not forgotten (or forgiven) 1972's Harvest and its attendant hit single, "Heart of Gold," charge him with responsibility for the touchy-feelie narcissism of the singer-songwriter boom.

Anyone who's heard the despair of On the Beach or Time Fades Away and sensed the frightening emptiness at the core of both records may regard Young as a terminally depressed candidate for the obituary page. You can also call him a rock 'n' roller; one image that resurfaces throughout his career is the wild-man hell-bent on tearing every last note out of his electric guitar, singing with an urgency best suited for the end of the world.

Since his debut as a solo artist in 1969, Young has come across as eccentric, undependable, maybe a drug case, and perhaps too trapped in his own orbit to have any relevance to the world at large.

By the end, the article has covered the already vast career arc of Neil Young with the following quote:

Neil Young: "I can relate to Rust Never Sleeps.

It relates to my career.

The longer I keep going, the more I have to fight this corrosion. Now it's gotten to be like the World Series for me. The competition's there, whether I will corrode and eventually not be able to move anymore and just repeat my self, or whether I will be able to expand and keep the corrosion down a little."

Back in 2014, much to our dismay -- and many others in the RUST community, as well -- Broken Arrow Magazine, published by the Neil Young Appreciation Society announced its final issue.

But hope springs eternal and wee just received this note from NYAS's Scott Sandie that life goes on for BA!

This is Scott Sandie, your old editor from Broken Arrow. This email is going out to all the old NYAS members who are still in my contact list.

For the past year or so there has been a working party preparing all 134 issues of Broken Arrow magazine for free online release. That project has reached the end of its main stage, and some 8000 magazine pages are now ready for viewing and search. Tom Hambleton has very kindly agreed to host these pages over on Sugar Mountain and has done a really great job in laying it all out in his inimitable fashion.

NEIL YOUNG IS IN FIGHTING MOOD in the new issue of MOJO magazine, which celebrates his dissident spirit over 50-odd years of unique music-making and uncompromising non-career moves. His latest cause is the integrity of audio, which he insists will find a spiritual home on his Archives web site, now fully-operational, which will enable fans to stream Neil Young music at super-high ‘master’ quality.

Not surprisingly, Young is not a fan of the current idea of what’s an acceptable standard of sound-quality on the majority streaming platforms.

“I’m not accepting the status quo of what’s happened in music,” he tells MOJO’s Keith Cameron. “When people listen to Spotify, they only hear less than five per cent, about three-and-something per cent of what the original music was. The rest of it is filled with garbage. It’s like having only the surface of the sound. Music is my life and I can’t stand by and listen to the crap that people are paying for today and be part of that. That’s why I already dropped out of streaming once and I’ll probably do it again.”

Young talks MOJO through his Archives site’s latest innovations, including an online newspaper called the NYA Times-Contrarian, and some of the audio-visual projects that we can expect to debut soon. Young tells us to expect a Shakey Pictures Movie Night, where exciting unseen film of some key projects will be unveiled.

“I think the first movie night we have will be the Alchemy [2012 Neil Young & Crazy Horse tour] version of Hurricane,” says Young. “It’s a half-hour version, and it’s also during one of the largest weather events… well, definitely the biggest weather event that I’ve ever played in. It is ridiculous-looking. And sounding.”

In a wide-ranging interview, Young acknowledges the particular place in his work occupied by Crazy Horse (“I think Crazy Horse probably gets to a more cosmic place”) while giving due credit to his current on-stage partners, Promise Of The Real, which includes Willie Nelson’s sons Lukas and Micah.

Elsewhere, some of Young’s most significant collaborators – including Graham Nash, Niko Bolas, Lukas Nelson, Frank ‘Poncho’ Sampedro, Nils Lofgren and ex-wife Pegi – relive some of Young’s most fascinating projects, zeroing in on the singer’s strength to stand up for what he believes in.

Nash recalls the circumstances around CSNY’s decision to record Young’s song Ohio, which mourned the four students shot and killed at Kent State University in 1969, before remembering a 2006 live performance of another Young song, Let’s Impeach The President, at Madison Square Garden, New York, which had later-to-be President Donald Trump grooving in his seat.

“He was right in the centre of Row 8, sitting next to Salman Rushdie, for God’s sake!” Nash tells MOJO. “You can’t make this shit up!”

The wonderful photo of Neil Young (by Richard McCaffrey) that adorns the current (October) cover of Acoustic Guitar is from a series of historic solo acoustic shows he performed at the long-defunct Boarding House club in San Francisco in May of 1978.

I was lucky enough to go to two of those concerts and was completely blown away: It was where I first heard many of the songs that would appear on Comes a Time (released in November ’78) and Rust Never Sleeps (released in July 1979, it includes three songs recorded at that Boarding House run)—both in my pantheon of great Neil albums. Then, when Neil and Crazy Horse went on an arena tour in the fall of ’78, dubbed “Rust Never Sleeps,” he included a few solo acoustic numbers there, too.

That tour was captured on film in a fantastic documentary (also called Rust Never Sleeps), shot at the Cow Palace outside of San Francisco (still the best Crazy Horse show I ever saw), and on a live double-LP (Live Rust). My “Throwback” choice is the wonderful 12-string number called “Thrasher,” which was hands-down my favorite of the new songs introduced at the Boarding House (and on the Rust Never Sleeps album). I find it very hypnotic musically and the lyrics so evocative; I’ve always loved it. This is the Cow Palace version from the film, so it doesn’t have quite the intimacy of the club rendition a few months earlier (and it even contains a vocal flub), but it still has that core mystery and majesty that make it one of Neil Young’s best tunes.

Meanwhile, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Promise Of The Real pass judgement on the current state of their capricious friend. “Where do I think Neil is at this point in his life?” says Lukas Nelson. “I think this is where the space ship is taking off in ‘After The Gold Rush’.”

“I’m the same as I was,” says Young. “I know what I want and I won’t accept less… I still do see the vista. I feel good. That’s my way of knowing that I can still continue. There’s no reason to not continue, because I can still see where I’m going. Can’t see it clearly, but I know it’s out there.”

Neil Young has discussed the future of Crazy Horse in an exclusive interview in the new issue of Uncut, out now and available in shops and digitally.

In the feature, the songwriter, who released a new live album Earth last week – read Uncut Magazine review here – explains that his oldest group are still a going concern.

“Crazy Horse is still out there,” he explains. “There still is a Crazy Horse. Billy [Talbot] is doing great. Playing with them? That’s in the future, we’re all lucky.”

Currently, Young is performing with Promise Of The Real. “They’re an unbelievable band,” he enthuses. “They go as far as I want to go. They don’t have to be taught anything. They already know it. They know the same things I know, they speak the same language. They are the real deal.”

Discussing ‘making peace’ with the tragic death of early Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten in 1972, Young denies that, for him, the loss is resolved.

“I don’t have to make peace with anything,” he says. “Danny’s unresolved. Such a great waste. Sad. But not resolved. Everybody has ghosts like that. It’s part of life. It’s ok. Just have to let them be. Some things you can’t change. You don’t want to try to change, but they’re everywhere. There’s no escaping them.”

Also in the extensive cover interview, Young discusses his live album Earth, the future of his music and the state of the planet, while old friends and collaborators including Stephen Stills and Graham Nash pass judgement on the current state of Young.

THE FUTURE OF BROKEN ARROW: Editorial in June 2013 Issue

The latest issue of Broken Arrow Magazine, published by the Neil Young Appreciation Society recently hit the streets and we're now finishing up reading the issue. As always a nice read -- especially as we look back while looking ahead.

In particular, we would like to bring to your attention an important editorial from Scott Sandie regarding the future of Broken Arrow Magazine. We have been in touch with Scott and would like to hear from readers on their thoughts on future publication. Drop a comment below.

The time has come to make changes in the way that Broken Arrow is published. For the past three years we have been struggling with increasing costs generally and the spiralling cost of postage in particular. These increases have (apparently) been required as part of moves to privatize The Post Office here in the UK. The reality is that a magazine that three years ago cost less than £3 to post airmail to the USA now costs £4.20 (nearly $7). That’s an increase of 40%. We have raised subscriptions to cover some of these recent postage increases but you might remember we decided to absorb last years. Presently a US subscription is $41 and needs to go to $45 this year and higher in future. The cost for Europe in terms of increases is no better. In the past many of you have said that you will pay whatever rate is required and many members also make annual donations to the NYAS – some quite substantial. Both gestures are much appreciated, but Jo and I are increasingly uncomfortable with a subscription that could go to $50 or more – it just gets silly.

We have costed out postage alternatives (especially bulk carrier to the US and Europe and then local distribution) but the saving isn’t that significant and this route adds a layer of complexity to the operation. We have also considered printing fewer pages to get the weight of the magazine below 100grams for printed paper – the lowest category possible – and therefore a reduced postage rate. But to achieve that an issue would only be roughly half the size it currently is, and we have rejected that too.

However the NYAS and Broken Arrow have been a major part of our lives for the past 12 years and after 130 issues since 1981 we are determined to keep it going if at all possible. And I’m very conscious that a big part of BA’s attraction is that it is a paper magazine that you can hold in your hands and read at your leisure, without squinting at a screen. I have said in the past that we won’t move to a purely web-based magazine and I stand by that. But we can’t increase subscriptions to the required level and need to find another way forward. Our proposal is this:

Jo and I will carry on doing exactly what we do just now, but Broken Arrow will be made available quarterly as a downloadable file. Subscriptions will be significantly reduced to £5 (or equivalent) per annum The magazine will look almost exactly as it does just now. Those members who are happy reading it on screen can do so. Those who would prefer to read a hard copy can print it off. If you want a neat copy for your collection you can go to your local print shop and have it properly printed and bound, using your saved subscription cash! It might be possible for some kind of ‘print-on-demand’ service to be established in each country or continent, with an agent (possibly an NYAS member) co-ordinating the printing for those keen on that. This possibility will be investigated in the coming months.

We propose to start this new approach from March 2014. To get to this position we will produce paper magazines for September and December 2013. March 2014 will be our first download. The cost of subscription renewals for the rest of this year will be pro-rated on the number of printed magazines you still have to pay for (either two or one). The new subscription rate of £5 (or the dollar/euro equivalent) will start from March 2014. To reduce costs we will be looking to phase out payment by manual cheques; payment will be online, via PayPal or bank transfer online for preference - but by cheque if you really can’t do that. There will be a small number of members who have paid beyond March 2014 and we will allocate future subscriptions at the new rate from those monies (so your money is now going much further into the future!)

I am very conscious there are some NYAS members who do not have a computer and rely on the paper magazine for their Neil Young information. I believe most local libraries offer free internet access and a small charge for printing. Your challenge in the next nine months will be to make sure you learn how to use these facilities so that you can access and print the file off. Once you’ve worked out the routine it shouldn’t be difficult. We hope to run trials in September and December.

In a way, I am sorry we have had to make this decision but we think it is the best option available. However, one big bonus with a file is that the magazine will be in full colour, and should look really good when printed! (Well, if you have it printed in colour…) Up until December 31st we will continue to accept new members but their subscription will also be pro-rated on the number of magazines that they will receive up to March 2014.

One final point. There may be someone out there who would rather take the NYAS and Broken Arrow forward in a new and creative way. Jo and I would step aside in the coming months if someone comes forward with an attractive proposal. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss this and we welcome your thoughts on this whole subject. Remember – it’s your society and your magazine.

When we initially read this, we were concerned about the log term future of both Broken Arrow & NYAS. Keeping these orgs strong and ongoing should be everyone's goal. We've been a supporter of NYAS going into our 4th decade now and hope it continues its long run.

The latest issue of Broken Arrow Magazine – number 127 – is now out with another interesting mixture of articles and photographs. A very varied issue covers the recent release of Americana, the history of Neil Young’s 12-string guitars, the significance of ‘rust’ in Neil’s songs and a fascinating look back at Hammersmith, 1989. There is also a colour centre spread of the more exotic releases of “Heart of Gold” from around the world as well as a fascinating Spotted! of a mysterious Zuma-like LP release. For those contemplating heading for the front row of an upcoming Crazy Horse show we re-visit 1995’s ‘Don’t Fear The Mosh Pit’. Reviews of CD releases from NYAS members Marilyn Miller and Ty Watling, a report of a meeting in the US with Record Research Incorporated’s President Joel Whitburn and lots of interesting ‘odds & sods’ make for some entertaining reading.

The latest issue of Broken Arrow Magazine – number 126 – is now out with another interesting mixture of articles and photographs. Included in this issue, the conclusion of “Expecting To Fly”, Victoria Cavaleri’s surprising memoir from 1966 with a cast of characters that ranges from Marty Balin, Jack Casady, and Allen Ginsberg through to Dickie Davis, Gene Clark and Neil Young, to name but a few. It’s a fascinating read published here for the first time.

Amongst several other articles is a report on the CSNY Italian Convention, a Collectors’ Corner covering very rare Mynah Birds’ singles, a close call in trying to meet Neil at Bristol in 1973, a classic entry for ‘Spotted’ and ‘Mr. Disappointment’ – a Top 5 of one fan’s Neil Young-related disappointments down the years. The issue wraps up with an interesting letters page and a Last Dance mystery. The striking front cover is a rare picture of Neil from 1966, as well as lots more news, reviews and letters.
