The film "Neil Young Journeys" will be released on Oct. 16 on DVD and Blu-ray and can now be pre-ordered on Amazon.com.

Blu-ray and DVD includes three featurettes: “Making Journeys;” “Journey to Slamdance: A Conversation with Neil Young & Jonathan Demme,” a Q&A discussion filmed at the Slamdance Film Festival; and “The 92nd Street Y Talks with Neil Young & Jonathan Demme,” providing a closer look at the enduring collaboration between Demme and Young.

Here are two previously unreleased tracks: “You Never Call” and “Leia” on The Music Mix | EW.com.



Directed by Jonathan Demme, Journeys captures Neil Young's 2011 solo tour to Toronto's Massey Hall. Concert footage of the Massey Hall performances is interspersed with scenes from a road trip through Ontario. Driving a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria, Young visits the rural town of Omemee, where he spent a key part of his formative years, and reminisces about his former neighbors. As he drives past the dramatically changed landscape, Young fondly embraces his memories of the past.

Rolling Stone: Are you a fan of Bernard Shakey's work as a filmmaker?

Jonathan Demme: I have a lot of respect for Bernard Shakey.

I love Greendale. It's a wonderful American independent movie. It's fantastic. When David Byrne and I were getting ready to do Stop Making Sense, we were looking at concert films and trying to figure out how we could do a film that was different from all the rest, and also would be really good.

For David, Rust Never Sleeps was the one he wanted to be as good as.

Billboard: With a film, book, art show, new album and another in the works coming out, does it feel like you're busier than ever? Does everything get the proper amount of attention?

Neil Young: It doesn't bother me because I didn't do them all at once. It's kind of a blitz I guess. It's better to get it out rather than hold onto it, because you hold onto it for too long. New things need to come out. Unless there's something wrong with them they should come out right away. I have plenty of old things that I am still holding onto.

Jonathan Demme: He's on a roll.

On a roll indeed. Lucky for us.

As for the doubters? “Take it in and blow hard.”

Mr. Young says he believes that listening to music in the car is the best way to judge its quality.

“You can tell a great song if you listen in the car,” Mr. Young said. “Why? Because if you are listening in the car, you have a changing picture. You are also distracted by driving. You are doing two things at once, which is really good for music. The soundtrack to the landscape? There you go.”

Mr. Young said he did not, however, write music in a car, save one experiment, the rock opera “Greendale,” released over 2003 and 2004 with an accompanying film and graphic novel. “I wrote the songs while driving around on my ranch in a 1951 Plymouth. When I got an idea, I would just stop and write. When whatever I was thinking was gone, I would just drive on another three or four hundred yards. When I got another idea I would stop again.”

As a musician who uses the phenomenon of rust as a leitmotif in his songwriting, Mr. Young explains his attraction to old cars, even ostensibly lifeless ones, in human terms.

“If you go for a walk in a junkyard, every car is talking to you,” he said. “There are voices. It’s like a cacophony of sound. Every car has got people in them. There are junkers, all piled up, but if you get close to them there’s history in every one of them: the families that grew up in those cars, the kids, the lovers. Everything that happened in those cars, it’s all right there. That’s why I love cars. They all have a soul and story to tell.”

Official Theatrical Release Date for Neil Young Journeys: June 29

Neil Young Journeys - A Film by Jonathan Demme

Sony Classics Pictures web-site now has an official theatrical release date for the Jonathan Demme documentary "Neil Young Journeys". The date is June 29th.

Naturally, this will elict howls of "Where is Trunk Show?!" in the comments section below.

No one seems to know -- even the Director himself -- last we checked.
