Great Q&A, not without a 'Shakey' agenda as it changed a bunch of times finally morphing into a 90 minute Q&A session with Neil and Demme along with a very qualified moderator. They showed a few clips of 'Journeys' interspersed with the Q&A.

An interesting segment went like this:

- Moderator asking Demme how he and Neil came to work together.

- Demme mentions Philadelphia and how they first imagined 'Southern Man' as an intro to the movie

- Moderator looks at Neil and says something like, "Southern Man was a pretty controversial wasn't it? Didn't Lynyrd Skynyrd write a song criticizing you?"

- Neil responds, "I don't think they criticized me" ... "They put me on notice" .... "I liked that" ... (Neil makes another short comment but I can't remember it) ...

- Neil continues something to the effect of, " I gave them a new song I wrote, gave it to them before the plane crash ... they were never able to sing it .... it was Crazyfinger"

Overall a great couple days of seeing Neil!

SONY, was great to see Neil for sure!'

One other comment that came to mind -

The moderator asked Demme about a film he produced that ultimately got shelved and later redone and released as a version totally unrecognizable to Demme's version. The moderator then looked at Neil and tried to make an analogy to 'Toast' which of course remains unreleased. Neil responded that there was never any problems with Toast and that he was happy with the album but that "its time hasn't come yet" ... as in its time to be released hadn't come yet and that he's holding it back until he feels its time has come. He seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the album and releasing it when he feels its right ...

Also this, from Rust FB page:

One question asked about further Archives releases. neil: "more are planned, but not until technology catches up to how the music should sound" or something to that effect.

So it appears Archives Vol. II will be held hostage to the further development of his hi-res mp3 alternative format. Haven't we been here before?

I haven't seen Neil's new movie but after reading FAQ on page 6 Boyd mentions the songs that Neil was playing back in his old Folky days I was thinking that maybe Americana would be really be a better musical background as it seems that the music is really a reference to his start ,even to a point yhat he was in a band called High Flying Bird

Some notes from the event:

Neil looked great. At one point, Demme was discussing how technology has expanded the palette of tools for visual artists. Neil noted that the same had not yet happened for sound but expected that to change.

Neil said the Lincvolt movie should be out in a couple of months and talked about how the fire just made the whole Lincvolt journey that much more compelling.

On the Lynard Skynard story, just to set the record straight, he did say "Powderfinger" was the song, not Crazyfinger.

Roughly close together, Neil mentioned that he didn't have any new songs to record when he got together with Crazyhorse. Half a minute later, he made reference to having stopped smoking pot and drinking. He had a sly smile when he said that.

Anon,
Thanks for the clarification ... agree it was Powderfinger ... that was a typo on my part ...

I thought it was funny when he said there are time when he likes being sick. "When your sick you can just be left alone" "I like having an MRI ... when your in there, there are no cell phones, noone to bother you"... something like that.

More on the BBC Radio 4 interview -
try this link:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01jhp10/Front_Row_Neil_Young_interviewed/

for the BBCiPlayer recording. The notes says it's there indefintely. Non-UK folk may not be able to get to the link but give it a try.

- re Americana songs - Neil said he wrote some of the arrangements for the Squires in c.1964 after hearing Tim Rose's version of Oh Suzannah. So at 48 years until a release these must now hold the Neil record for longest "unreleased" songs!

- writing Waging Heavy Peace about the early years was one of catalysts for Americana

- he also said he sung GStQ at school in Canada and the it came back to him when they were recording the album. He liked the way the tune had ambiguous origins and meaning for both sides of the US War for Independence

- most Americana songs were recorded within 3 takes except GStQ that needed 6

- as Anon mentioned there's enough original material recorded immediately after Americana to fill a double CD, including one 26 min track

The conversation also touch on playing with Crazy Horse and Living with War\Ohio and protest\ folk songs in general. Neil was asked if he could imagine his own songs become future "folk" standards - he replied he didn't think of them that way and was always looking to the next thing

Dan and Anonymous - thanks for your commentary on the session. Sounds like a quality 90 minutes.

Lots of interesting stuff revealed!

So did Neil say that they're releasing a double album of original material, or only that enough material was written to fill one?

I'm excited!! Wooooo!
