Jonathan Demme Talks Neil Young
Some new info on Jonathan Demme's upcoming film "Neil Young Journey".
Looks like there will be a soundtrack CD with new songs and the holdup with the "Trunk Show" release seems to be Warners.
From TIFF: Jonathan Demme Talks Neil Young - Thompson on Hollywood by Anne Thompson:
But the director [Demme] wanted to shoot more than a concert doc, so he took Young on the road in his 1956 Ford Crown Victoria from his home town of Omemee, Ontario to Toronto. “He makes me think of what wandering troubadors must have been like,” says Demme. “Like a Shakespeare company going around with new material by the same author. He has an amazing team of people who make it possible.
He’s an authentic creator, confident performing; he doesn’t censor himself.”
The WB CD for Neil Young Journeys with three new songs should be out before the end of the year. Eight songs are from the Daniel Lanois-produced Le Noise album, and six are reworkings of classic songs.
[Regarding Trunk Show release] Warners has yet to release the DVD. “It’s frustrating,” Demme says.
Thanks Lee!

He performed two of the unreleased songs at the filmed Massey Hall show - 'Leia', 'You Never Call'. I wonder which will be the third song on the CD - guess "I Wonder Why" which had been recorded at Lanois house.
Neil didn't perform 'Angry World" and "Someone's Gonna Rescue You" at Massey. So the CD either contains the LeNoise-Versions or he performed them during Demme's extra-shooting without the audience. He also had to sort out 3 of his 9 classic songs at Massey.
Does releasing a CD means that there will be no DVD?
Or Demme's memory or knowledge of Neil's songbook is a bit shakey ;-)
This makes things muddier to me and not clearer. Why would Warner put 'Trunk Show' on the shelf for over three years now if Neil wasn't behind it or at least not arguing against it? I doubt that Elliot gave Warner total control over its release but of course I'm just a dumb fan.
Oh well the 2007/2008 tour lives on in my mind at least.
Love Neil Young
I have tried 3 times to send this message here we go again...I have been listening to Neil since I visited San Francisco in late early 70's (his patched jeans era). All they played on my rental car radio was his music and I became hooked. Love the daily Thrasher's info especially film clips and interviews. Keep on truckin' Neil!
Perhaps one of the 3 "new" songs is the mysteriously withheld masterpiece from FITR, "Get Around". That'd be a treat!!
Yay! A new Neil live album! Good news!
I don't believe the CD will impact the release of the Journeys dvd... Déjà Vù was released on both formats!
I saw the Massey Hall show and it was my first Neil Young show. By far the most magical music memory I have.
As a fan who's heard a lot of bootlegs and live albums, I can say Massey Hall's Cortez the Killer was the best version he's ever played. :)
I think that Warner witheld the release in 2009 and after Neil himself has "shelved" it. Honestly in 2009 Warner financed the release of FITR, Archives Vol.1, the four cd remasters and Dreamin' Man.His postponement was a logical consequence. So far Neil has released the BR Le Noise and the so-so BR A Treasure, not professionally filmed.Neil has spent his money for the Trunk Show production, so a cancellation of this release should be a breach of the recording contract by Warner. Anyway, all these delays can impair the fame and the reputation of a great artist like Neil.
So Tired.
Thanks Andre!
The release of Trunk Show comes up constantly as to why?
It would seem that JD would know if anyone besides NY.
Still thinking they're holding off for trilogy box set release.
But as for contractual reasons, seems strange. But hey, what do you expect!? ;)
Great artists like Neil, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan "produce" their material, audio or video. By the way the video stuff is really expensive. I imagine that Neil has spent a lot of money for making a film by JD.If the two parts are really in good terms, The Warner can't indefinitely postpone the Trunk Show release. In my opinion, the actual delay is a Neil choice.
So Tired.
I agree 100% with andrea1bianco! The way it was promoted with a website, etc. - it makes zero sense for it to be shelved unless Neil did the shelving. I do rememver Archives Guy saying a while back that it's just on hold. But considering that that tour was the last full tour with Ben playing, perhaps it's shelved indefinitely.
Who knows?
Neil has paid big money before to not release something that he deemed 'too good'.
Ughhh!!!
Granted the tour went on from 2007-2010 and went all over the world.
I stand by my 'Ughhh' comment
This is great news- a Twisted Road live document (besides my bootlegs). I remain hopeful we will see Trunk Show...one day.
Seriously, I want to know more about Neil's book! Is it his memoirs? Could it be a work of total fiction? Hmmmm. Can't wait!
I saw Trunk Show about 1.5 years ago in Calgary and saw the solo tour last summer. It will be great to get all three JD films on Blue Ray.
Heart of Gold still a favourite too. Great sounds and colors.
Long drive in new truck last night with no CD. Mr.Soul came on the radio to help me get home.
When will trunk show be released on DVD/blu-ray?
Good god, release Trunk Show already!!!
Why the hell isn't Neil releasing or Warner releasing "Trunk Show" on Dvd and Blue-Ray? Does anyone have the definitive answer? I've been wanting to buy that for several years.
