He's absolutely nailed it, hasn't he. Ron
Jones beach. Neil was fired up! I’ve said before the last round (at least in NYC) with crazy horse was tired. Then fall 2024 with chrome hearts Neil seemed to be engaged and on it. Fast forward to last night. Neil in a great mood. Some rarities and if you look at setlist a lot of his “hits” or most popular tunes. Just a great great show. At almost 80 he really is charged up. Such a good show. And the fact that he does stuff from harvest Moon on top of the rockin songs, I just can’t explain what a great show. It was last night.
Agree Neil was in great spirits, and definitely more energized than the last run of The Horse. Two old gems - Long walk home and Singer without a song. The pit was flooded and off limits - Neil kept saying he couldn’t see us. Maybe he could have summoned us to go “Dancing across the water” or possibly have told the band “look out Momma there’s a white boat coming up the river?” but Neil being Neil seemed to wave off not playing Hurricane as his comment on climate change. “Take America back” in Rocking in the Free World showed us Neil will always be Neil
Another great show last night. Neil had a lot more to say than when I saw him in Sweden in June.
Long Walk Home was a wonderful surprise - he changed “Beirut” to “Ukraine”. And he introduced Singer Without a Song by saying “here’s one we haven’t played in a while” which he then amended to “never” (which isn’t true - he played it a lot in 2013).
The combination of high tide and Hurricane Erin meant that general admission was flooded - they took all the people out of that section and moved them elsewhere to seats. Made for sort of a weird atmosphere with a big gulf between Neil and the fans in the boxes, who were the closest to him. He made a bunch of references to the water, but didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to play I’m the ocean!
No ‘New Mama’ was a bummer, and I was hoping to hear ‘be the rain’ again, but as I said, another amazing show. It is remarkable how well he is performing as he approaches 80.
Last night Jones Beach one of the best Neil Young performances I've ever experienced and I've seen everything from his attempts at rockabilly to his performances with Crosby stills and Nash at almost 80 years of age. He was on fire and like so many other musicians out there or I should say unlike so many Here and keep he's not just out there collecting dollars he's out there entertaining fans. A great diverse set list and a humorous comment to about the venue, including not remembering his first date while Neil I'm 60 and I saw you at Jones Beach when I was 17 so it was before or should I say more than 40 years ago, sir he was engaged with the audience and I'll say this an incredible backing band. No, it's not crazy horse, but these guys were on fire.
Was wonder’n how they were going to manage the tidal pools…
And also how the stadium map went from1/2 full to nearly full on Saturday afternoon.
Fun fact: Jones Beach used to have a “ moat” between the stage & seats. I recall seeing Don Henley. He pulled up on a huge cigarette type speed boat!
