All of the Canadian shows have been cancelled on ticketmaster.

Thanks Jesse. As we feared. We were awaiting something official from NYA before posting. Knowing this was coming is a blow. And getting official confirmation via Ticketmaster really sucks.
Oh, well, no Canadian leg for us.
Although still planning for London, Ontario. Already have plane tickets, car rental, hotel etc.
But the festival is still on so not a total loss. And we dud get a great NYCH in Virginia experience, so there's that.

That’s unfortunate news.

Trying to stay in “glass half full” mode, though, Early Daze is due to drop in full this weekend. Hopefully the new release will provide something positive to focus on.

If Neil and Crazy Horse never play another show, then that's fine with me. Legends like Billy and Ralph owe us NOTHING. These guys are in their 80's, for crying out loud. Why they're touring around North America playing Cinnamon Girl is beyond me. There's nothing wrong with calling it a day and enjoying the rest of your life in peace.

I don't think Neil has a choice, he HAS to keep touring. The reason why is a theory I have that none of you here want to hear, so I'll keep it to myself. So maybe Neil and Micah can figure something out, maybe with the boys from POTR, now that Lukas is going on his own.

Crazy Horse, though? I'd feel awful if one of those guys keeled over onstage or in a lonely hotel suite. They've given us over 50 years of memories, more isn't necessary.

Variety has a headline that Ohana & Hollywood Bowl have also been cancelled.

The ticket links on the NYA page still have Hollywood Bowl tickets on sale, and you could still buy Ohana tickets from that NYA link, but the Variety article is correct that the Hollywood Bowl page no longer has anything listed for 9-29, and the Ohana page has a TBA listed for Neil's spot on Saturday.

The simplest answer for why they’ve kept touring is, of course, they want to. “Live music is better.” Neil has always been very active and clear about his feeling that playing live maintains vitality. He may be especially itching for it since the 2020 lockdowns curtailed touring.

Realistically, many artists (even major names) aren’t making enough money on album sales. These days, physical media mostly appeals to collectors and streaming is, to put it mildly, not always lucrative for the artist. Neil’s back on Spotify but I don’t know that it’s a moneymaker for musicians. I also don’t know whether NYA online turns a profit, though the box sets are clearly expensive to do. Neil churns out enough product that I do wonder whether it all pays for itself. Plus all the other ventures he’s invested in over the years (Pono, Lincvolt…).

I won’t speculate about private matters, but anyone involved with disability service knows it can be costly to assure a high quality of care for loved ones.

In other words, I see lots of potential reasons.

Ottawa was to mark 40 years since my first Neil concert (Aug 84 with The Harvesters)
These Ottawa festivals must be bad luck for Neil, as he had to cancel Ottawa Folk Festival in 2013 when Poncho broke his hand.

Speedy recovery to all. Long Live Crazy Horse

I highly doubt that money issues is the reason why Neil must continue touring. I believe he made $150 million big ones selling his catalog. If Neil's having money problems, he's nowhere near as smart as I thought he was over the years.

At 6/26/2024 11:17:00 PM, Blogger Richie Cruz said...

I think once you hit 80, you're past the point of doing either one of those two options.

At 6/27/2024 12:44:00 AM, Blogger The Metamorphic Rocker said...

I can think of a handful of basic reasons for touring, in no particular order: A) Profit B)To maintain some public profile C) For an active, stimulating lifestyle D) To grow as a musician and/or artist. I suspect most (if not all) musicians would agree that if you don't play regularly, your capabilities will suffer. Keeping active is supposed to be good for your health. Granted that none of this *requires* large scale public performances, but it is one way.

Many people, as they age and start slowing down, are reluctant to give up things like driving. They want to keep being as functional as possible for as long as possible. For someone like Neil, performing may be as fundamental as driving or mowing the lawn are for an average person. While some stay healthier longer than others, my sense is that many artistic people (musicians, actors, etc.) keep working as long as they can. It's a vocation or lifelong passion.

For a lot of working people, it may be hard to imagine not really *wanting* to retire--loving what you do. That in itself is a brutal indictment of working conditions, cost of living vs. wage growth, and employees' general alienation from the fruit of their labors. (Alienation is a somewhat complicated idea--but it boils down to people finding their jobs meaningless or unfulfilling, not least of all because most of the money is going to the big bosses.)

However, if not financial necessity or maybe sheer compulsion, I don't see NY being coerced by other factors. My take (though it may be naive) is that touring helps NY feel young, vital, and connected with the audience that clearly still exists. Most musicians want to play. Most humans, in fact, like to stick with what they're doing when they find it truly fulfilling and stimulating.
I've never fully subscribed to the notion that humans are lazy or workshy. Most of us just want to use our energy efficiently to accomplish things we believe have value.

I saw Phoenix it was great. They find it fun and the adulation of the crowd never hurts. He keeps gettin out there live for the same reason he pumps out so many records. He wants to be relevant. Consciously or not. Of course they owe us nothing but perhaps refunded money. I remember someone excited about Hollywood and thinking do you know how far off that is. They are 80 or he could cut another ham sandwich. Wishing the best for the men of Crazy Horse. May you get better soon.

At 6/27/2024 01:38:00 AM, Blogger tomatron said...

They keep touring because that’s what they do. It sounds like it was a tough choice to call the break this summer, and Neil is eager to get back out there. Doc, it was hard news today, but not a major surprise after the radio silence all June. The real kicker is that the original Austin date did not have to be cancelled. The storm that day came and went in an hour’s time.

The Horse may or may not return. But hey. I’ve been lucky enough to see them in support of Psychedelic Pill (they played Ramada Inn that night!) and am glad I took the leap to California to catch the Coastal Tour last year. That Berkeley show could not have been a lovelier experience, simply sublime.

Right now, the health and well-being of the band is top priority. I’ll be tuning in to Early Daze tomorrow night to go back to where it all started, hope my Ticketmaster refund will make a dent in the Archives Volume III set, and await the inevitable live 2024 album to hear the full version of Cortez The Killer in glorious analog. Love Earth.

Unsorted musings
The postponement or cancellation of the latest Horse incarnation tour coincidently comes with the first release of some of the earliest recordings of the band. How's that for bookends?

The NYA has been on autopilot (as the Scotzman put it over on his site) for weeks now (indicator: no LTTE). I think it's pretty safe to assume that either Neil Young himself and/or one or both CH veterans feel unfit for touring. To replace yet another member of the ensemble would be just that: a replacment band and not the Horse.

When making deals with old men one should always be extra careful, they might not be able to make good on their promises and afterwaords nobody's there to take any blame (learnt this when buying some real estate twenty years ago).

And now we take it away to CNN and leave the rest of the planet and humankind to the good Americans to make up their mind, where themselves and the aforesaid rest should be headed.

No one has mentioned it but the cancelled Texas shows had only sold about half way through, if that. The cancellations came as no surprise, even after multiple reschedules. The original day back in May turned out to be a beautiful day in Dallas. Perfect for a spring concert. Sounds like Austin could have had a show too. Hope the old guys are okay. Don't get me wrong, but there's more to the picture, than meets the eye...

According to the Sugar Mountain site, the only shows that aren't listed as canceled are the Bourbon Festival in Kentucky and Farm Aid. Wonder if that means we might see a Neil solo set at those two locations? Which would mean that Neil's ok and one of the other guys are ill. Just speculating.

Getting sick isn’t the same as quitting. I had tickets & a hotel room booked for the Capital Theatre show in Port Chester NY that got canceled after Poncho’s hand got crushed in the bus door and abruptly ended the tour. So, yeah. Have seen this movie before. It’s called Life. Get one. Anon

I assumed you were gonna delete this because that's your normal routine, but seeing how you didn't, I'll respond to you.

Yes, I was excited about Hollywood, though that had more to do with the venue than anything else. My excitement waned when I realized how much it would cost to do the whole project. In these days of Bidenomics, it's kind of hard to shell out close to a grand to go see a simple concert. Not all of us are loaded enough to fly to different places to go watch a show. Perhaps that's why ticket sales have been underwhelming.

And this isn't 1976 or 1991 or even 2013. I watched many videos from the different shows and truthfully, the performance onstage didn't move me enough to drop everything to go catch this.

Okay?

The first opportunity I had to see Neil Young was in the early eighties. I still have the poster; ‘Neil Young Solo’. It was scheduled for the Memorial Coliseum in Portland Oregon on March 14th. I had tickets, but after his show in British Columbia, the night before my show, Neil got sick and had to cancel. Tickets were $10.00 or $12.50. I should have kept the tickets, but I took them back for a refund.

My first tour ended up being the Ragged Glory tour, which I saw two separate shows. And many more shows over the decades since. And then an opportunity to see Crazy Horse, perhaps one last time, and they were to play less than an hour drive from where I live. I couldn’t resist, so I splurged and got the best seats I could at presale…Platinum Seats $324.00 each times two. Row H center. A fortune for someone in my position, but I figured it would be an experience I would cherish for the rest of my life. After all, none of us are getting any younger.

Then I got the email that it was canceled, and I would receive a full refund. Well, yes I’m disappointed, but that’s the way it goes. Frankly I’m more concerned with the health of the (two) who are dealing with unknown health issues. I have had many opportunities to see Crazy Horse in concert over the years, and several Neil Young solo concerts too. But these men have been a part of my life since Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. They have given me so much already. I just care that they’re okay. And hopefully, they will be. If by chance, they reschedule at the same venue, then I will try again. If not, it’s been a hell of a ride.

Peace 🙏

@ Dan : I agree. Mostly I am concerned for the two ailing members of the band. But I didn’t lose money on the cancellation. Sorry!

Neil is mortal as we all are. Life’s pitfalls are random sometimes. Neil tried to protect himself and his band, crew. But Covid is out there spreading like wildfire again. It’s too bad they let it out of the lab after designing it. That was the Americans, right? We must be trying to reduce the population. Roundup saturated into the food supply isn’t doing the job fast enough. Yup, the Billionaires won’t miss us. They will be fine.

Prez debate tonight. Biden had senior moments. Bernie could run circles around both of these guys. The Dems could have won with Bernie, but that is not what the 1% wants. Pay more taxes? Are you nuts? Trump is reselling the “Trickle Down Theory of Economics” in his defense of his corporate tax cuts & tax cuts for the ultra rich. Americans are dumb enough to buy it.

Both of these old fuckers have brain damage. Both are happy with the Genocide in Gaza. What a choice.

Peace! Your Brother Alan in Seattle

Richie: think you mean 150 million “little ones”? (150 million X $1) vs 150 million X $100? I heard it was closer to $300 million for 50% ownership. Whatever. Monopoly money to most. But I do recall the NY interview w/ Rick Rubin where NY says “Fuk it. If I don’t want to, I never have to tour again” or something such as. That statement was post covid, pre Love Earth. As always w/ NY “ Change Your Mind”.

We must remember that this is "no country for old men" (the late great Cormac McCarthy). Indeed the level of vigor needed to keep up with the level of ego and greed gets harder and harder. And there is violence in our words. Maybe it is right that violent crime in America had decreased but the violence in our hearts and minds grows in the unbroken antagonism from the various sides. Come prepared to take cover. Chigurh is on the prowl.

I was lucky, before my ears were toast, I saw the Rust tour, Trans, and Greendale. The Rust tour had that feel of once in a lifetime. Here is one of the greats, listen while you can.

Now is the time. Don't retreat from liars, bigots, or fools. If we do, we might as well get off the grid.
