"CHEVROLET": ONE SONG - TWO LENGTHS | Neil Young Archives
From Subscriber News | Neil Young Archives comes word that the song "Chevrolet" -- from upcoming Crazy Horse album WORLD RECORD -- will be released in 2 versions.
Hang on, because this is going to be complicated. It's a Shakey deal.
Neil posts on NYA:
The story of how one song became two lengths is interesting. The first edition vinyl Chevrolet is 13:32. Possibly the longest Crazy Horse album track.
After we mixed Chevrolet, we edited down Chevrolet to the version on the vinyl - 13:32 to fit on one disc.
We went right to the vinyl mastering to be on schedule to get the album out by Nov. 18th.
A week later, we had a playback of the album for Reprise. We played back the digital master that was identical to the vinyl. At the end of the playback of Chevrolet everyone cheered!
That really felt great!
Go read the whole NYA post to fully understand. But to summarize as best we can:
- For quality reasons, Neil OK'd a double LP format, but it was too late to change the master for "Chevrolet" which had been prepared for a single LP format.
- So Neil had the last 2-3 minutes of the song cut from vinyl release. The full song will be on CD and NYA.
BTW, just for the (world) record, both "Ramada Inn" and "Walk Like a Giant" from Psychedelic Pill are longer songs than "Chevrolet" at 16:52 and 16:30 respectively.
In addition, there will be two videos of ‘Chevrolet’, one by dhlovelife who directed ‘Love Earth’, plus a second studio version a la ‘Break The Chain’. A Behind the Scenes ‘World Record’ is coming too.

And Driftin Back thats 27+ minutes
@Jazzman beats me to the punch. Driftin' Back is the perfect track to lure those stoner metal kids into the Cult of the Horse.
The good thing about Eco-Young today is that he doesn't have to put bullets through vinyl records anymore if dissatified with an outcome. If there ever will be a second full length edition it will become a highly priced collectible. Or will it be the other way round, but just the clear vinyl version is the very grail?
The longest track ever put out still is ARC, but as a sound collage that doesn't count. Someone once told me that size (length) doesn't matter...
Change Your Mind is 14:40, longer than the vinyl edition of Chevrolet, seemingly shorter than the full recording.
