Neil Young Adds 51 Tracks on Archives | NYA

51 tracks were added last week to the file cabinet.

They are listed on page 10 in the column “New this Week”. Hurry up though because it’s almost next week! The 51 songs have infocards and many of them have special added notes for you to browse through. These are background / behind the scenes tracks and moments that are designated as outtakes, demos or singles. Many are now associated with the albums they were recorded during the time of. This gives hard core investigators (ed - TW emphasis) something to get their teeth into. Most of them are in the earliest years. They are noted with “outtakes, demos or singles” tags in the File Cabinet.

These 51 tracks are only the beginning. Expect more to arrive in the future from NYA.

From  T-C | NYA (Page 10):

We were struck by an odd mood (ed - TW emphasis) this morning and decided to give you the list of audio recently added to NYA rather than hinting it might be there and letting you dig for yourself. Copy this list to the forums before the mood passes and we return to opacity! (ed - TW emphasis)

As requested, copied here on TW.  May more "odd moods" strike us all!!! More transparency, less opacity, ok Neil?! (fyi, "For nothing is hidden which will not become manifest, nor secret which shall not be known and come to light.")

(and we even had our own odd little mood yesterday right here @ TW.  see how everything connects?! "hard core investigators" usually find hard core evidence like this or this or that.)

enjoy,

Comment of the Moment: In Defense of Neil Young's Album "Fork In The Road"

fork-in-road-cover2.jpg

"Fork In The Road" by Neil Young

Earlier this week, we posted on the video of "Light A Candle" by Neil Young | NYA and made the following off handed observation that album Fork In The Road was an "often mistakenly maligned minor masterpiece (post 2000) album."

Well.  You might have thought that we had offered praise for - oh, some sort of weird avant-garde head scratching piece of modern art or something similarly sacrilegious.

light-candle-video.jpg
VIDEO: "Light A Candle" by Neil Young | NYA

What follows is a passionate defense of Neil Young's album "Fork In The Road" as our Comment of the Moment from the post  "Light A Candle" by Neil Young | NYA by Alan in Seattle:

I also like the opener When Worlds Collide, although when I first listened to it - and a fair number of the album's songs-I thought it sounded like Neil had hurried up and made an album.

I thought many of the songs sounded too simple. But as time passed, like so many of his albums, it grew on me and became a classic. Just Singing a Song Won't Change the World is pretty Epic, truly. We get to sit back and hear him crack open the Heavens with Old Black. I love it.

I want that song on my Afterlife soundtrack. Endless solos preferably.

If you don't love Fuel Line, I can't understand why not. This is just a fantastic song, great riff, cool lyrics... He is placing Linc Volt front and center. Johnny Magic. This is a really cool song. Its impressive how hard can he can rock playing just a few notes! He tips his hat to the 50's background singing.

Its a Punk Rock Alt-Fuel extravaganza.

And for Neil to give Thrasher a boost at a critical juncture is so cool. I am so grateful that message came through from Artist to frustrated fan / blogger Thrasher; he might otherwise have quit! That was when Neil decided maybe this page serves a good purpose. He got over being pissed about having his setlists posted on the Internet.

He began to see that many of his biggest boosters reside right here where the chaff gets separated.

This was a moment on the Neil timeline when I was not playing close attention. I had a 4 year old and a 7 year old at the time. I am sitting here listening to Cough up the Bucks, a song I didnt' care for that much at first, although I liked many of the themes. It has become a classic in my inner World. Get Behind the Wheel sounds good to me today.

This is kind of what happens in general when I listen to Neil Young music. I am partial to the electric guitar. I like this album as much, maybe more(!), than Silver and Gold, possibly. That will send some of you fans reeling perhaps. What with Razor Love and all. I saw the tour and I loved it. I enjoy Silver and gold but I like his songs that have a bit more energy than some on S&G do. And then CSN took 3 from it and made them worse with syrup, to my ears.

Blasphemy? There is no accounting for taste!

An album I absolutely love is Le Noise. Some of you don't love that album? I will never understand that. I want Neil to do a Le Noise 2! Bring it on! Thanks for all the ear candy, Neil! Compelling music, the soundtrack to our lives. I would obsess on some other music if only it could hold my interest (for well over 3 decades). I feel like a lucky bastard to have snapped up all of these releases as they came out. As I sit here enjoying Hit the Road on NYA, it sounds like another classic, for sure.

I love 80% of what he does. I like around 18% beyond that. Is there a Neil Young song I don't like? Usually for me its the ones that CSN is singing on. Oh, here's one I don't like: Welfare Mothers. I just always thought that song was in poor taste and not that intelligent. But so what!

I still love to dive in and digest his Art. As Light a Candle leads me to bedtime, I pity the fool who undervalues this song.

Yet another Environmental Anthem, and upbeat, heartfelt masterpiece.

Alan in Seattle

As always, thanks for the passionate defense of FITR Alan in Seattle!

As we attempted to clarify in followup comments -- which you handled much better frankly -- a couple of points.

1st, FITR may not be a "minor masterpiece" for NY, but comparatively speaking for the era, yes. 2nd, for us here @ TW, FITR is essential NY. Why you ask? The title track and the lines about blogging came to us at a very critical time.

For those around here at the time, you'll recall those post-LWW years and the absolute near chaos here in blog comments. This was in the days before the SocMed era of FB, TWTR, etc.

All of which led to our semi-legendary encounter with Mr. Young who engaged with us directly over the TW contretemps and kerfuffle. The chaff MUST be separated from the wheat.  Clearly.

linc-volt-neil-young.jpg
Neil Young & LincVolt

Then of course, there was the whole LV saga in of itself, watching Neil and the boys in the garage in real time, chatting away. They were very magical times for rusties.

Lastly, FITR is an album which is meant to be played while you're rolling down the open highway w/ speakers blasting. try it & it works really well as a road trip soundtrack.

Sitting around the house on a Sunday morning? not so much.

Yes, It's Still An Angry World Neil Young, But "everything Is going to be all right"

"Angry World" by Neil Young
(Official Music Video from album "Le Noise")
Produced by Daniel Lanois/Directed by Adam Vollick

On Neil Young's 2010 album "Le Noise", the song "Angry World" attempts to capture some of the rage that was coursing through the veins of the body politic at that time.

Mild stuff compared to what we see today.

"Some see life as a broken promise.
Some see life as an endless fight.
They think we live in the Age of Darkness.
They think we live in the Age of Light.

It’s an angry world and *everything is going to be all right.*
Yeah it’s an angry world."

Incidentally -- and ironically -- Neil Young's very 1st Grammy win was for "Angry World" as Rock Song of 2011.

Neil Young: "Where Do We Go Now"
Charles Theater, Baltimore, MD
December 2012

(Note: Photo not Photoshopped)

We posted this photo way back in 2013 and it still seems appropriate in light of recent developments -- sadly.

The photo is the marquee at the Charles Theater in Baltimore, MD in December 2012 when the Neil Young film Journeys was playing. Another film being featured is titled "Where Do We Go Now". (Thanks Stacey B.!)

The original 2013 posting was made in response to fans reaction to the cancellation of the Crazy Horse tour dues to Poncho's hand injury. To say we were appalled by the insensitivity of some our fellow fans is an understatement. As both Billy Talbot & Ralph Molina have written, Crazy Horse is a team, a unit, a band of brothers.

We posted the photo and it seemed appropriate in light of developments at that time.  In 2021, it still seems appropriate, sadly.  Will deja vu ever end?!

PS - Here is a Comment of the Moment in response to original 2013 posting on It's an Angry World So Where Do We Go Now Neil Young?

... Good times are comin', I hear it everywhere I go. Good times are comin', I hear it everywhere I go...

Or just "Throw Your Hatred Down". Or maybe, Instead of cursing in the darkness, we should just "Light a Candle"?

peace & love,

Comment of the Moment: Physical Neil Young

Pre-Order Now: WAY DOWN IN THE RUST BUCKET" by Neil Young w/  Crazy Horse

This past weekend, we featured a Comment of the Moment: Watching Out For The Greedy Hand by the ever intrepid Alan in Seattle.

Basically,  Alan in Seattle stated that he had "transcended the physical Neil Young" and would no longer be purchasing hard copy, tangible product of Neil Young's every release. (See comment @ Comment of the Moment: Watching Out For The Greedy Hand)

Which brings us to today's Comment of the Moment on Alan in Seattle's comment on Pre-Order Now: WAY DOWN IN THE RUST BUCKET" by Neil Young w/  Crazy Horse  by Dan S.:

My wife and I recently watched two documentary’s about minimalist who have chosen to live with less stuff. To travel light through their lives and limit what they own, and how they live. Not only for their own personal lives but for the planet as well.

They recommend going through all your possessions one item at a time and eliminate everything that doesn’t bring you joy and let go. Sell it, donate it or just discard it. During one of the interviews one of the young men was asked about a person’s collection of books. He asked the person, “do the books bring them joy, and the person said “yes, they bring me great joy”, and the answer was, “then by all means, keep the books”.

My collection of physical music brings me great joy. Yes, it takes up a lot of space in my home, but the joy I get just walking into my music room brings me real joy. I don’t need a computer or iPhone to access a wonderful and eclectic collection of music, I simply walk in and choose the music that meets my needs at that moment.

Like Dionys, I sit for hours admiring the cover art and reading liner notes that enhance my understanding of the creation process of the music by the artist and the people who helped facilitate the creation of the brilliant music I admire. I grew up with vinyl records and the album covers have always been an art form I have admired. The creative process of a visual representation, or expression of the music found within.

I completely understand and agree with the concept of minimizing our possessions as we have become such a consumer based society and I’m working through all the stuff I own that I either don’t use or don’t need so as to live with less stuff. But as the man said “if it brings you joy, by all means, keep it”.

Unfortunately I am in the minority when it comes to music. The vast majority of people are more than happy to stream their music and don’t care about the physical product anymore. For many people music is simply wallpaper to fill the background of their lives, and that’s okay. For me, music brings with it a much more powerful presence and genuinely feeds my soul. And the artwork and information that I can physically hold in my hands enhances the listening experience for me.

This may be the reason Neil and other artists are selling the rights to their music as streaming only provides extremely small financial returns. I don’t blame them, as they have to make a living just like everyone else. But as Thrashers said, there may come a time when the “cloud” will simply evaporate, and all those zeros and ones will vanish in thin air and be replaced with the next new and improved version of technology and everyone will be forced to upgrade yet again, and again, and again.

I’m probably overreacting, and the world will simply move forward and I will be left behind. So be it, as long as I can listen to my music on a nice turntable and amplifier through a set of nice speakers, then that’s what I’ll do. If it all becomes obsolete, then so be it. As for now, I will continue to purchase my music when I can afford it in a physical format until they drag my mortal remains to the crematorium.

Peace 🙏

Thanks so much as always for contributions here Dan. Your care and consideration in comments here at TW are a most welcome respite from some of the more pressing matters of our Times.

As you mention we share your paranoia that someday we'll wake up and "The Cloud" will be down and the music will stop. Like you, in such an inevitable event, we will need that music more than ever.  So like you retain analog backups and playback equipment for such a day, God forbid.

That said, off to the Greedy Hand to order our WDITRB Deluxe Box Set Edition! Let's get physical ...

Brothers Abraham, Martin & John + Neil Young's Song "My Pledge" #MLKDay

Frame from Neil Young's video for "My Pledge" - Director: David Braun

It's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, so we thought this might make an appropriate posting for the day.

In 2016, Neil Young released the album Peace Trail with a song titled "My Pledge", which contains some enigmatic lyrics.  These lyrics refer to a song by Dion from 1968 titled "Abraham, Martin and John".

In the song "My Pledge", Neil sings about the alienating side effects of modernization, including cell phones and the monetization of Jimi Hendrix's music. The song also references Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr and John Kennedy.

"Dressed in white like a nightingale
Her name was Florence, Florence of the land

I knew I'd seen her somewhere
But she was busy with him gone

She came with three different brothers
Abraham, Martin & John

I heard a song about that once
And I never knew what it meant"

The above lyrics are followed by another line about 3 rock stars who died in a plane crash. The lyrics -- of course -- refer to Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens -- The Father, Son and Holy Ghost or The American Pie.

Back to Abraham, Martin & John.

"Abraham, Martin and John" is a 1968 song written by Dick Holler and first recorded by "Dion" DiMucci. It is a tribute to the memory of four assassinated Americans, all icons of social change, namely Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. It was written in response to the assassinations of King and the younger Kennedy in April and June 1968.

The struggle continues and the dream never dies. "But I do see what I see, And I want to do my duty." #WT1sWBWO "That's my pledge, judge."

Dion - "Abraham, Martin and John" - 45 RPM Single Picture Sleeve, 1968

Dion sing “Abraham, Martin and John” on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1968

“Has anybody here, seen my old friend Abraham?
Can you tell me where he’s gone?
He freed a lot of people, but it seems the good, they die young
You know I just looked around and he’s gone.”

“Didn’t you love the things that they stood for?
Didn’t they try to find some good for you and me?
And we’ll be free
Some day soon, it’s gonna be one day.”

Comment of the Moment: Watching Out For The Greedy Hand

The Greedy Hand | Neil Young Store | WBR

Over the past few months, much discussion over the flood of Neil Young product.

A good problem to have if ever there was one and who can complain?  Maybe aside from those on fixed incomes, unemployed, retired, tight budgets, etc - basically everyone.  So what's a rustie / Neil Young fan to do?

The Comment of the Moment on "WAY DOWN IN THE RUST BUCKET" by Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse Release Date: February 26, 2021 by Alan in Seattle:

I am beginning to transcend my active addiction to the Hard Copy of Neil Young's every release.

I have found my budget getting more thin than ever before, with two young adults on my Driver's Insurance and increased costs otherwise. After buying every single release including Archives 1 on Blu Ray and every possible CD and a lot of LPs, I have embraced NYA on line membership as a way to stay plugged in to what my heart desires from my favorite music artist's vast and growing catalogue. Barring a physical release of NYA2 on Blu Ray, I may have bought my last Neil Young album.

My budget along with the Deluxe package debacles helped me to see the advantage in my $2/Month membership fees to NYA. The free access in the latter part of 2020 helped me enjoy the Archives without waiting for the more reasonably priced physical CD release. I don't need to own every single deluxe package to prove my love and devotion to NY's music and total experience. NYA on line will do. I have sufficient bandwidth, etc.

I am thinking about how lucky I have been to be at 28 Neil Young shows, now moreso during the times of Covid. I don't regret going to any shows by any music artist, having had hundreds and hundreds of great experiences. But the NY shows were always my favorites. I saw him play 10 times in 1996 including 6 OPL shows, and that is safely locked away in my Trunk of Memories. What is still to come in the world and the Neil Young world, we know not. But with so many awesome releases on the way, such as Rust Bucket, I am stoked.

Mortality is scary.

I have told my kids in the past that I might mourn the loss of Neil Young more than I would my own father's passing! But who can say? I haven't lost many people in my life to death, unlike my favorite music artist, Neil, who has lost so many! We don't get to choose when our loved ones and loved idols will pass on to the next world, but I am so happy that Neil Young lives on. He has gotten to see his dream of a high resolution Neil Young audio / video museum come to life on line.

After railing against MP3's and low resolution music through the decades, quite rightly, it seems he has finally defeated the poor choices of Apple Music to give us a fraction of a fraction of the real thing. Corporate Giant Amazon has backed his High Res values in a real way (which I will probably never subscribe to). Kudos to Neil Young for the prolific majesty of his creations.

Thank you Neil Young. Long live the King, Don Grungio. Come on back to Seattle after the world stops ending, should we be so fortunate as to enjoy your live shows again.

Thank you for giving us access to the music we love! I know one day I will be hearing Old Black in his master's hands at the Great Gig in the Sky.

Valhalla will shake.

Alan in Seattle

Thanks much for sharing here Alan, as always.  Your passion is contagious ... in a good way.

We certainly hear you and others about minimizing our footprints and wallet impact.  Many are cutting the cords, downsizing, rightsizing, etc. We get it.  But to admit our fears, we've always been leery of the impermanence of ephemeral digital realm and "The Cloud".

We do believe that one day we'll wake up and the The Cloud will be down. If that day ever comes, we'll pull out our vinyl and we'll just keep on rockin'.
