The RUST BUCKET tapes have been called "the missing link between Ragged Glory and Weld". "My Country Home" will be the 1st single and is now in the NYA filing cabinet.
Here is the Official album trailer for 'Way Down in the Rust Bucket'.
As we shared here @ TW in 2020, songs from the 3 set "RUST BUCKET" concert were being screened on Hearse Theater Screen #2 | NYA.
In 2019, Neil Young announced a major Archives discovery titled "RUST BUCKET".
The complete concert setlist is 20 songs with a running in total of 3 hours. (See Sugar Mtn for more details).
From a comment in September 2019 on Neil Young "Unearths" Major Crazy Horse Archives Discovery by Scotsman:
There is a strong case for releasing not just this remarkable show, but every single multi-tracked film from the Ragged Glory tour that ran until April 1991.
Yes, after the Catalyst, the setlists were near-identical from night to night. But the performances were consistently off-the-scale. Neil was at his absolute peak as a guitar player in February-April 1991.
It's notable how the attitude became darker and more intense as the tour rolled on, evolving from the more relaxed Catalyst show into a more furious, disciplined, brutal soundtrack to the Gulf War. This was a draining tour for Neil, his most energetic performances ever, and you can see how burnt out he looked at the final show in LA. I think he'd given everything he had to give, musically. No wonder the next tour was the polar opposite of Weld.
As for the Catalyst show (one of two warm-ups for the arena tour that would end up being delayed a couple of months until the beginning of 1991), it's the missing link between Ragged Glory and Weld. We are lucky to have had great audience tapes from this show, but I think it deserves an official release. We'll see what happens.
Scotsman.
Thanks Scotsman. Brilliant on calling the Catalyst gig "the missing link between Ragged Glory and Weld".
A very special Crazy Horse club show with “Surfer Joe” and a rare
"Dangerbird" (1st live performance since ZUMA album release in 1975).

What a welcome surprise that this is coming so soon.
This was one of the first things I looked forward to last year, when things were turning bleak... watching a new track each Friday on the Hearse Theater. To be able to watch it all in succession soon... what a treat. Hopefully this a sign of a year where we start to turn the corner.
Totally agree about this being the missing link between RG and Weld. I love the Buffalo Weld show and the other recordings, but the vibe is less joyous than this show. Those were serious affairs, with a specific purpose (and they're fantastic in that manner). But this show demonstrates a wonderfully laid back Horse. They're both great and I'm happy we get to enjoy both.
Watching Country Home and Opera Star (Born to Rock) today on NYA (both excellent videos, a good day for CH on NYA), I couldn't help but thinkg of Scotsman. I'm glad you quoted him in this post. I feel like he's been quiet lately. Just wanted to send some good vibes his way- Scots- I hope you're healthy in mind and body. I don't always agree with your Crazy Horse takes, but I sure do value them. And anytime I see these old videos with Poncho, and I miss him in the band, it always makes me think of you. Thanks for the community.
As long as there is a CD/DVD combo I'm happy. At the very least a separate DVD release, or even better Blu-Ray with a lossless 5.1 mix. Let's wait and see, I didn't see any clips when they were in the hearse theatre, but I do have the bootleg, which I remember as being awesome.
@harm I'm sure I read somewhere previously on NYA that this was going to be DVD only, not BluRay. I'll be getting the Box Set, as per the Return To Greendale box. I'm expecting £150 in the UK but given recent pricing for NY output who knows?
Glad this is coming so soon in 2021 as understood Young Shakespeare was up next. Weld was an entry album for me into Neil's work and this is the perfect companion piece. It's a stunning performance from start to finish, Dangerbird being the definitive version for me, with the Horse taking the track to another level from Zuma. Similar to how I remember him playing it in Berlin with POTR a few years ago. As then, he seems so relaxed in Rust Bucket. I love the story he tells in Special Deluxe of setting-up an amp rig in his new car hangar at Broken Arrow and writing some of Ragged Glory. Neil alone in a huge space with Old Black. Great image. From that conception, to then getting it down with the Horse and Briggs at Plywood Digital, this first play of many of the tracks in Rust Bucket, and then the perfection during the Weld tour. It's all Neil at his best for me. I see the seeds of this energy in his playing in the previous Rusted Out Garage/Muddy Track tours, but Rust Bucket marks the beginning of the next level of the Horse. An epic gig in an intimate venue. And all on camera! Based on Return to Greendale, ATGR 50 and NYA II, the four vinyl discs and DVD (blu-ray?) deluxe is going to be real steep, but I'm going to go way, way down in this one.
RTG, Thrasher, and all here at TW:
Sorry about my absence in the last weeks and months. I know I have failed to stay in touch with many of you, both here at TW and elsewhere. I am doing fine, I have just been overly busy with other projects in a chaotic year.
I have still been finding time to keep an eye on the discussion, however! And like the rest of you, I've been enjoying the particularly fantastic albums Neil has released recently.
So here are a few scattered (and typically off-topic) notes on what has been going on in my absence:
Firstly, I have little to add on the recent deal with Hipgnosis. Although if I know anything about Mr Young, this isn't a decision he will have made lightly. And I can't imagine him signing *anything* that would involve giving up much control.
There is one pertinent lesson to consider here, however. It was taught to me by sales legend Zig Ziglar:
Once a man has made a compromise, it only gets easier to compromise again.
Bob, for example, did one commercial and then ended up doing dozens of them. Hopefully Neil won't ever be seduced by the first step on the same path. Because he doesn't need to. And I applaud him for standing up for his principles all these years.
Moving on. A lot of fuss has been made online about the marketing of the Archives Vol 2 box-set (most of it tracing back to me). And rightly so: I think the fanbase were treated outrageously by Warner. When the record company treats us as idiots to be fleeced, it's our responsibility to make a fuss about it. Otherwise they'll do it again.
But how about the music? As truly brilliant as Neil's music on Vol 2 is, it comes in only second on my favourite releases of 2020.
Top spot goes to Return To Greendale. An awesome album that is up there with anything from the 70s. And it features a tighter, more assured and impassioned performance than the already-golden studio version.
I'll write more about it in future, but for now I'll just say this:
Put this magnificent live album alongside Archives Vol 2 and Rust Bucket, and you have a more impressive body of work than most artists achieve in a lifetime.
Other notes:
I've fallen behind keeping up with the NYA website, due to it apparently not being compatible with my new phone. And it's not exactly the easiest app to use at the best of times, is it? It would be quicker to go out and buy a REAL newspaper.
But I do know that towards the end of last year, several (brilliant) complete live shows were added to the timeline as a teaser of how the website might be expanded to showcase Neil's archive of live tapes.
Long-time readers know I'm a huge fan of Neil's live work, and an expanded online concert archive would be a massive game-changing development. So much potential. So I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. I'm impressed that Neil has commited to the website and is building something special.
(This may come as a shock to some of you, but I'm happy to admit I *very occasionally* get it wrong. I thought the NYA website would be abandoned within a year. I was wrong.)
Now the app just needs to be made fully compatible with all major smartphones (FFS). Otherwise there's not much point keeping my subscription.
That's enough for now! I hope you are all doing well and keeping safe. I'm still around if you'd like to say hi. Sorry again for falling behind on replies to emails, etc.
And as troubling as the last few months have been, it's safe to say there has been no shortage of great music.
Roll on Rust Bucket - one of the finest live shows you are ever likely to hear.
Scotsman.
Thank you RTG - very kind of you. Extended Scotsman-brand comments further down the page.
;-)
Scots.
@ Flyingscotzman : welcome back!! I’m really happy to know that you are well, and for me you have always been a wonderful contributor here at Thrashers. I tried to email you recently to thank you for the brilliant concerts you sent me several years ago, but my letter was returned as not deliverable. I am just happy and relieved to know you are doing okay. Welcome back my friend.
Peace 🙏
I don't have the history with you scotsman but I appreciate what I have read. More importantly, I am glad you are well. I empathize with "chaotic year." TW has been a saving grace, a lot of good people around this part of the internet.
Scotsman welcome back.... one of the few men who really understood the space in the sound that Poncho brings to Horse. A great example is letting Neil deliver gems like Change your Mind. Its all about the Poncho. You have good words Scotsman, hopefully they flow freely again :-)
And when put to succinctly like Scotsman has done, when we actually bring it down to brass tacks, it is so obvious how lucky we are to follow the work/art of Neil. ( the genius, the good, the mediocre and... the not quite so good)
Standing alone -the audio material he has been released to us over the course of last 12 months is mind blowing. Logistics & Cost aside... it is music that is continually getting me through the last year of living very very differently. Uplifts me when feeling low and takes me to that oh so special place where all you can do is smile inward to yourself.
long live the Horse !!!
Bazzzzzzzzza
The news of this release makes my day. I think I put this as my number 1 on the NYA poll. Can’t wait to hear and see it anew. Keep on rolling them out, Neil and crew!
@ Scotsman - so good to see you our friend! It's been awhile and we did miss you and your keen observations.
Your comment that the RUST BUCKET tapes are "the missing link between Ragged Glory and Weld" is really outstanding and captures so much, so economically.
as you can see, folks are pretty jazzed about your return, as well as, the coming RUST BUCKET tapes.
we do hope you're well & safe and hope to hear more from you in 2021.
we can't provide much incentive other than to guarantee you fame & fortune in the global rustie community. :)
Thank you Dan, Ab, Bazzzzzzza and Thrasher for your kind words. A pleasure as always to be part of the community.
Scotsman.
Where can I get the “May the Horse be with you” logo on a poster or a shirt?
A question for those of you who know a lot more about music than me (all of you on this thread). I bought Ragged Glory the day it came out and could not stop listening to "Over and Over." I still regard this song as one of Neil's best. I will not elaborate. I am interested in what you all think of this song?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08SZ1HYPY/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=neil+young+way+down&qid=1610695898&sr=8-4&ref_=d6k_applink_bb_marketplace
Deluxe version priced at $99 on Amazon.com. I will be happy with that for 4LPs, 2CDs, DVD and box. Of course if orders via GHS also includes the HIRES tracks too.
What time can you preorder rust bucket at today
Nothing on UK amazon for rust bucket nor greedy hand, who won't be getting my business. Times vinyl is almost £24 on UK amazon tho.
WDITRB is up now on Neil's Greedy Hand store...I was able to snag a deluxe edition with no issues...can't wait...
Well, its up on the UK and EU stores but already sold out! Must be a glitch, but after the experience with NYA Vol. II (I only got my HI-RES codes this week...), I've gone back to the US Greedy Hand. Never had any issues or import taxes from there to Spain in the past. And it's free shipping over $100, so bundled in The Times vinyl and a Homegrown rolling tray. UK Greedy Hand sucks.
Just ordered the Deluxe box via UK GHS. £84 shipped for 4xLP, HiRes download, DVD and 2xCD. That is pretty reasonable. Very happy.
I do find it perverse that Neil is still issuing mp3's with these orders. Who the hell wants an mp3? Given you get the FLAC files free, why issue mp3's? I minor gripe but given Neil's hatred of low resolution downloads it really is bizarre.
I am having trouble placing an order. For one, I can not seem to log in. When I try to place an order checking out as a guest I enter my address but then on the payment page I select "credit card", but nothing pops up to allow me to enter it. I then hit "Save and Continue" but then a screen pops up that says "password does not match." It never asked me to enter a password at all, so it is quite confusing.
The Rust bucket price in Euro for an order with the GHS (US) is 86,18 € which indeed is quite reasonable: They ask for 16,00$ handling and shipment, but I avoided it by buying another item to bring the total to 100,00$ and be free of additional charges. EU-customs will be 20,63€ if they charge it. For reasons unexplained in my case they did not charge custom fees for the NYA Vol. 2 package. Maybe they were overwhelmed by the sheer workload in the months before last Christmas.
Preorders are up on NYA site now,
Love the man and love the show but a hundred bucks for a DVD seems a little excessive.
Really looking forward to this one! I wish there was a cd/dvd or cd/bluray combo though, I used to love those in the early days of the performance series releases.
I'll be going for the cd issue myself, from anywhere except the greedy hand, but the price for the deluxe set is incredible value when compared to ATGR50, maybe somebody at Neil's HQ takes notice of our comments!
In the winter of our discontent, three things then to look forward to in the coming months, one is a genuine medicine and the other two also benefit our well being....the vaccine, Trump buggering off, and a good dose of the Horse!
Stay well.
The Greedy Hand store is not user friendly at all, and I personally don’t need Hi Res downloads as I prefer CD’s and especially Vinyl to enjoy my music. So I will be purchasing the deluxe edition through my independent record store here in Boise, as I have decided to avoid Amazon at all costs. I’m also disappointed that Neil has chosen DVD over BluRay, but it’s his choice not mine. For some reason he is convinced that BluRay is dead (which it’s not), and it clearly provides better sound and picture quality than DVD, and although the film quality doesn’t look all that great to begin with, I assume he’s happy releasing it on DVD. I’m just glad this isn’t a limited edition release.
I am also concerned about Neil flooding the market this year with so many projects being planned. These times are financially tight for so many people (myself included) that it will be difficult to get everything he’s planning on putting out in 2021. At least I have a subscription to NYA website so I’ll be able to at least hear this music even though I my not be able to purchase it.
I’m grateful he’s finally letting this stuff out for us all to experience, and as we all had to wait seven years for Archive Volume Two, I shouldn’t complain about it too much. But I’m still not paying $100 for the 50th anniversary edition of After the Gold Rush. It insulting.
Peace 🙏
Always really felt a connection to the track too, Abner. I had Weld before RG, so I was familiar with the RG songs performed live and Over and Over wasn't on Weld. I was on a road trip with a buddy who brought of copy of Ragged Glory on CD. I was excited to finally hear the studio versions of the live jams that I loved. Then Over and Over came on and I remember doing a double take. It had such a different sound... much softer and the harmonies were wonderful. The music video is also one of my favorites. Waa very glad that Neil has dusted it off in this past decade. It checks all the boxes, great jam, wonderful Horse background vocals... makes me feel very reflective. I understand why it didn't fit the vibe of the Weld tour, but I'm very happy to get a live release of it here (and Days That Used to Be).
A bit disappointed...
why leaving Cowgirl out of the double CD only version and why not releasing a CD + DVD bundle?
Once again there seems to be a sort of Greedy excess way down in the store (..) and my intentions to pre-order have frozen in this cold winter
And then..why releasing the hi-res digital if the show has been recorded in brilliant 44.1 KHz? Upsampling does not add that much, I know
@Roberto, in a Letter To Editor, NY said Cowgirl will not be on CD because sound capture was lost in the middle of the song. They used another source for the movie and the DVD. And yes, it's true. You heard clearly the difference when the Cowgirl video was released on NYA.
So I understand it doesn't fit with a vinyl or a cd release. Less important on an DVD with a video a little crappy (but I like it) !
The other problem, if you include Cowgirl on CD, you need 3 CD's for the whole show and not two... And maybe 4 and half vinyls ?
Anyway, it's disappoiting, this Cowgirl version was so fantastic.
And I think the DVD had to be sold with the CD. I've recently bought the Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets Live recording (by the way, a fresh return to the beginning of Pink Floyd, really fun), 2 CDs and 1 DVD in a nice small box for 23 EUR...
I’m also disappointed. Why not individual CD, DVD, LP releases? I only want the 2 CD and 1 DVD – not the LP edition. Who wants to pay $100 for the whole package if you haven’t got a record player? Let people make their individual combinations, if they want to. I guess I’m not alone here.
Hopefully the CD version will be sold through other record stores and not exclusively through The Greedy Hand. After much frustration and several mails (only some of them with a reply) I finally received Archives Vol 2 before Christmas from the UK Store. Before that I had written to them to get a status update. Now one month after receiving the Archives I get a reply from them saying they are sorry I haven’t received my package! Of course I immeditely informed them that I had indeed received my order last year, so everything was OK. They thanked for my message and wrote: “We appreciate your feedback and would like to assure you we are working hard to clear our backlog so we have timely communication with our customers.
I’m having my doubts, though. Still haven’t received download codes and one year free subscription. And now I have given up. With this and many other European customers’ problems in mind with the UK store I certainly hope future releases will be sold through other record stores. Another alternative was to place The European Greedy Hand Store in the European Union and not in the UK, where there seems to be a lot of problems after Brexit. Can anybody recall if there was talk about other locations when the Greedy Hand was established in Europe?
Kim
Denmark
I'm having the same problem as Dr. J above. When I click on 'Complete Order', I get this popup that states 'Please make sure your passwords match - Update Billing Address'.Pretty frustrating.
Over and Over was played only twice on Alchemy 2012 I saw 1 Lake Tahoe. The 2nd and 4th shows. Of course its a great tune and if theres only 1 encore song its hard to leave disappointed after that IMO. This is exciting news but I havent been a vinyl guy since the days of that and cassettes I want the CDS and DVD tho. So will have to see what shakes out. Ive not bought anything but tickets since Chrome Dreams 2 but this Rust Bucket is a desert island set of songs. I wish Id been there being but 35miles away at the time.
Amazon US has all three options available for pre order so I’m assuming that these will be a regular release, and not exclusive to The Greedy Hand. This is why I plan to purchase through my local record store. I have no idea how to login to Greedy Hand which makes the whole process extremely frustrating. I won’t be buying anything from the site until they get with the program and set up a user friendly site.
Peace 🙏
@Phil, thanks for answering. I haven't red Neil's letter and I do believe that sound-wise Cowgirl could be unfitted.. but I still do feel something's wrong with these releases .. or the money behind them
CSNY-DejaVu is a damn good 90 minutes to spend with....it helps us European to understand better the American way of thinking on politics
Stay safe everybody

I am beginning to transcend my active addiction to the Hard Copy of Neil's Young's every release. I have found my budget getting more thin than ever before, with two young adults on my Driver's Insurance and increased costs otherwise. After buying every single release including Archives 1 on blu Ray and every possible CD and a lot of LPs, I have embraced NYA on line membership as a way to stay plugged in to what my heart desires from my favorite music artist's vast and growing catalogue. Barring a physical release of NYA2 on blu Ray, I may have bought my last Neil Young album. My budget along with the Deluxe package debacles helped me to see the advantage in my $2/Month membership fees to NYA. The free access in the latter part of 2020 helped me enjoy the Archives without waiting for the more reasonably priced physical CD release. I don't need to own every single deluxe package to prove my love and devotion to NY's music and total experience. NYA on line will do. I have sufficient bandwidth, etc.
I am thinking about how lucky I have been to be at 28 Neil Young shows, now moreso during the times of Covid. I don't regret going to any shows by any music artist, having had hundreds and hundreds of great experiences. But the NY shows were always my favoirtes. I saw him play 10 times in 1996 including 6 OPL shows, and that is safely locked away in my Trunk of Memories. What is still to come in the world and the Neil Young world, we know not. But with so many awesome releases on the way, such as Rust Bucket, I am stoked. Mortality is scary. I have told my kids in the past that I might mourn the loss of Neil Young more than I would my own father's passing! But who can say? I haven't lost many people in my life to death, unlike my favorite music artist, Neil, who has lost so many! We don't get to choose when our loved ones and loved idols will pass on to the next world, but I am so happy that Neil Young lives on. He has gotten to see his dream of a high resolution Neil Young audio / video museum come to life on line. After railing against MP3's and low resolution music through the decades, quite rightly, it seems he has finally defeated the poor choices of Apple Music to give us a fraction of a fraction of the real thing. Corporate Giant Amazon has backed his High Res values in a real way (which I will probably never subscribe to). Kudos to Neil Young for the prolific majesty of his creations. Thank you Neil Young. Long live the King, Don Grungio. Come on back to Seattle after the world stops ending, should we be so fortunate as to enjoy your live shows again. Thank you for giving us access to the music we love! I know one day I will be hearing Old Black in his master's hands at the Great Gig in the Sky. Valhalla will shake. Alan in Seattle
Thanks Dan Swan! Went through Amazon. No glitches there!
Roland (love that song): "upon the fields of green when time was just a joke" is a wise lyric. That has to be the fire of youth. Time is definitely not a joke.
Alan, I regret having gone to a Charlie Daniel's Band concert in maybe 1977? 1978? It must have been the record for most whiskey drank in one place in human history.
@ Dr J - we had trouble w/ Greedy Hand when ordering NYA #2 last fall also.
The trick is that you have to log into your account 1st and then place item in cart. If you put item in cart and then try and complete order the site somehow cross checks your email, knows you have an account and blocks order b/c of account detail mis-match.
So, Briggs gets the production credit, but it was really John Hanlon that brought this out for us. Thank you John for this huge gift.
On the UK site, there doesn't seem to be an option to sign in.
Here is how you loign:

Just up on the Contrarian:
“Way Down In The Rust Bucket”, “Young Shakespeare” and “The Times” DVDs will be available exclusively at NYA separately. Purchase from The Greedy Hand Store. No release dates yet.
Great news for those of us who want physical releases.
