Neil Young "Unearths" Major Crazy Horse Archives Discovery
Neil Young has "unearthed" a major Crazy Horse Archives discovery per recent Subscriber News on NYA.
A complete multi-camera video (6 cameras?!) has been discovered in the NYA vaults. Produced and Directed by the late LA Johnson, the Neil Young & Crazy Horse concert was filmed on November 11, 1990 at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, California. (See Sugar Mtn for more details). Consisting of 3 sets, plus encore, the video is titled WAY DOWN IN THE RUST BUCKET.

I had a bootleg audio of this show a long time ago on a cassette tape. I think it is among their best live performances, as an overall show, among all that I have ever had access to.
Just hope they do an official audio release and not just a film. I was just listening to this via the doomandgloomfromthetomb Tumblr's Horse history they're doing.
This is one of the best CH performances; love the bootleg (before discovering Rust and trading). The fact that it was filmed is icing on the cake. Wow. Can't wait.

Yeah, the post does mention the 6 cameras and LA Johnson directing... BUT it's still a little vague about how Neil is going to "bring this to us". Which is all he says.
I'm guessing he means streaming in the Hearse Theater... at least for starters.
Also Neil said no tour this fall due to Shakey Pictures "film projects"...
of course we assume the Colorado "making-of" film is the main thing he was referring to... but getting this film ready (to stream at least) must be one of the other "film projects" he was referring to.
Having been to the Catalyst many times in the last 25 years, I'm trying to figure out where they had the room for 6 cameras. When that place gets packed, it's a tight squeeze everywhere. Nevertheless, I am drooling thinking of video of this amazing show. "T-Bone", baby!!!!
YES! This is one of two times "T-Bone" was played live, as far as I know. I have never seen a boot of either one. This is epic. I've always thought that "T-Bone" distilled the essence of the Horse better than any other single Neil song. Got mashed potatoes; ain't got no T-bone!!! Can't wait for this to show up.
No mystery about how this is being delivered - the original NYA post about it (from back on Aug. 30) talks about "three sets from the Catalyst, coming soon to the Hearse Theater in a sequential presentation. Watch the Hearse Theater schedule for dates." The real question is whether there will be any sort of audio release, that hasn't been mentioned yet.

this is holy grail stuff, folks. the first bootleg cd I ever purchased (called "feedback is back." it was the 2cd version, missing "cowgirl in the sand") over the years I pushed this on anyone who was willing to listen. it contains maybe the best crazy horse live performance ever of "dangerbird", among so many other gems. knowing that this was filmed and recorded is like a dream, but then again I'm a little worried that it won't live up to the hype somehow. like hearing a professionally recorded version of the show will somehow take away the magic of the performance.
can't wait to see if I'm wrong about that!!

There is a strong case for releasing not just this remarkable show, but every single multi-tracked film from the Ragged Glory tour that ran until April 1991.
Yes, after the Catalyst, the setlists were near-identical from night to night. But the performances were consistently off-the-scale. Neil was at his absolute peak as a guitar player in February-April 1991.
It's notable how the attitude became darker and more intense as the tour rolled on, evolving from the more relaxed Catalyst show into a more furious, disciplined, brutal soundtrack to the Gulf War. This was a draining tour for Neil, his most energetic performances ever, and you can see how burnt out he looked at the final show in LA. I think he'd given everything he had to give, musically. No wonder the next tour was the polar opposite of Weld.
As for the Catalyst show (one of two warm-ups for the arena tour that would end up being delayed a couple of months until the beginning of 1991), it's the missing link between Ragged Glory and Weld. We are lucky to have had great audience tapes from this show, but I think it deserves an official release. We'll see what happens.

@Scotsman - I don't know what I was thinkin' - I even HAVE the boot of the show. But anyway, I'm a T-Bone fan, and I stick by my comment on it. It is Crazy Horse unleashed, elemental. And essentially described the times when Re-Act-Tor was released.

YES!!! This is my favorite Crazy Horse show of all time (complete with “Surfer Joe”), and to know that it will get an official release in some form is the best news I’ve heard in a long time. The performance on this night was absolutely stellar, and I also would vote for a stand-alone audio version in addition to the video.
I was there with my friend on the rail. And my other buddy made his way to the sound/video truck out back. Neil asked for one suggestion from the audience, and it was my friend and I who called out for T-bone. I can't wait to see this video. When? Where?
